Butte Creek Organic Porter

Butte Creek Organic Porter

Butte Creek Organic Porter pours into the pint dark brown, almost black in color. Porters are honest ales, they taste like they look - Rich, dark and chocolaty, with not so subtle undertones of caramel and coffee. But unlike its dour dusky look, it flows through the mouth with a velvety smooth texture, and finishes with just a hint of hop crispness derived from traditional aroma hops. This is a powerful porter that can be enjoyed with bangers and mash, a hearty meal or even paired with a fine desert. 6.0% ABV, OG 14.5, IBU 18.

3.3 Very light, thin head. An very light, roasty aroma filled with malt and chocolate. Raisin flavors with light hints of coffee and chocolate. Not bad beer.
2.7 bottle into glass, brownsh pout, brown heasd, odd malty aroma, taste is raisen, malts , some coffe, npthing spectactular,
3.2 Bottle. Strong chocolate malt flavors. A good hop finish. A bit thin on the palate.
3.5 Pours cola colored. No head. Aroma of roasted malts and chocolate. Lighter than expected, but nose carries through to the taste - roasted malts up front, some bitter coffee and chocolate on the finish. Good.
3.3 Pours a very dark brown with a small and not so well retained head. The aroma is lots of rich chocolate, some roastiness, and a mild sweetness. This moves to a coffee kind of character as it warms. The flavor is earthy and nicely hoppy with some mild fruit notes. The beer is mildly roasty and nicely chocolaty, the beer is sweeter than I would prefer a porter to be and as it warms it becomes a bit chalky. The more I drink it the less I like it, but it’s certainly a passable porter.
3.9 Much better than the only other Butte Creek beer I’ve had, the Organic ale. This beer avoids the stale, sourness of that offering. It has a nice, smooth body, some licorice and chocolate in the flavor and a roasted aroma.
3.2 12 ounce bottle into pint glass, no bottle dating. Pours very murky dark reddish brown color with a huge 2-3 finger fluffy tan head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Good soapy lacing on the glass, with a ton of streaming carbonation. This foamed up instantly on the pour, so its probably infected. Aromas of caramel, molasses, roasted malt, raisin, chocolate, prune, toast, toffee, apple skin, grass, and herbal spiciness. Some pretty unpleasant aromas as expected after that foamy pour. Taste of milk chocolate, roasted malt, caramel, toast, apple, biscuit, toffee, and herbal spiciness. No bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of milk chocolate, roasted malt, caramel, toffee, toast, and herbal spiciness on the finish for a bit. Unlike the aromas, the flavors are actually quite robust with good balance; no cloying flavors after the finish. Medium-high carbonation and medium bodied; with a fairly creamy and crisp mouthfeel that is ok. Alcohol is well hidden with only a small warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is a solid porter, even for being infected. Some solid flavors that are fairly robust; very smooth to drink. I had no problem finishing it at all.
3.6 It is strange that I am drinking this out of a wine glass, at a Modesto food festival. It’s an enjoyable porter but nothing extraordinary.
3.6 Black -Red hue with a white/tanish head about a half inch, leaving nice lacing. ARoma is cocoa licorice mild sweet carmel malts.Dark berry notes.Fine dark chocolate.some bready malt. Taste is smooth mild chocolate mild malt, some hoppyness on the citrus side giving a crisp almost tangyness.Has some spicey citrusy bittering giving this porter solid bitterness.Pretty solid somewhat complex with a nice taste and drinkabiltiy.Mildy watery finish, somewhat ashy not in a bad way.It has a pretty clean finish though giving it good drinkability.
2.9 dark brown black coloured body with a off white head a spicy hoppy roasted malty aroma a spicy malty caramel little sweet chocolate taste with a sweet little alcholic bitter finish
1.8 Poured flat and seemed thin. No head to speak of. No real aroma, either. The taste was indistinct, mild, not noteworthy in any way. But it didn’t taste bad, at least I can say that for it. I haven’t had a lot of beer labeled organic that I’ve enjoyed. Butte Creek hasn’t changed that.
3.1 Bottle, thanks Ryan Ahern. Medium brown with a Small off white head. Nose is roast, light sweetness, sherry, soy sauce. Flavor is mildly sweet, mildly bitter, mildly metal.
2.7 Simple, but well made porter. No head retention and extremely high carbonation. No complexity.
3.3 650mL bottle poured almost black in color with a modest off-white head with good retention and some fine lacing. Aromas of roasted malts and chocolate and a hint of coffee. Taste is roasted malty sweetness with chocolate and some coffee with some hoppy bitterness in the finish. Nicely balanced flavors with medium body and soft carbonation. A very drinkable porter.
3.5 Nice roasted, chocolate malt aroma along with side notes of iron and saltwater air. Beautiful crystal clear, medium/dark brown with a deep ruby color topped by a nice and persistent tan head. Flavor is very light with light charred grain and coffee balanced by a milk chocolate flavor and sweetness. Some of that minerality in the aroma shows up here, but it’s not pronounced. There is some earthy hop bitterness here, but this is mainly malt driven. Body is smooth and lightly creamy. Finishes medium dry with a lasting milk/dark chocolate taste. This is very much an English style porter, not the big, heavy porters we generally make here in the States, and Butte Creek has done a nice job with it here.
3.1 12oz bottle that has been in my fridge for probably almost 2yrs. Pours almost black clear brown with nice looking off white head. Nose is faint, mostly a mild roast and carob is about all I am getting. Roasted nutty malt, some coffee, carob, but all are really mellow and not supper assertive. Some vegital hints going on and just lacking in some depth of the flavor for me.
2.2 A: snifter. deep, rich mahogany color. light tan head that was ridiculously high, about four fingers in width. good retention though and a large amount of lacing. S: some coffee and toffee from the roasted malts. Almost has a funky aroma, some sourness. I am now thinking this is an infected bottle. T: good roasted malts...coffee, toffee and some chocolate. Wonderful flavors, to bad it was a bad bottle. M: way too much carbonation. it has a moderate mouthfeel and body, but the damn infection just killed this tasting. D: has potential, but this batch was infected, which is common for me with organic beers.
2.5 Sampled at SBWF09 Dark brown. Small tan head. Chocolate in the aroma. More like coffee, or leftovers after brewing coffee in the flavour.
3.3 Dark brown with a light tan head. Aromas of roasted malts, cocoa, and some molasses. Flavors of heavy roasted malts, chocolate, coffee and bitterness. Smooth and easy to drink, but a little thin for the style.
3.0 Deep red pour with thick mega huge tan head. Scent is sorgum molasses. Taste is light for a porter, malts and a hop finish.
3.6 Really enjoyed this porter. Not overly complex, but very drinkable. Sweet chocolate dominates the aroma and flavor, which is great if you’re into it. Also some roasted malts, brown sugar. Not any bitterness to speak of. Tasty!
3.1 Dark amber color, small head. Chocolate aroma, milky, creamy, sweet mint notes and some coffee. Sweet mint flacor, chocolate, cream and hops.
3.5 12 ounce bottle dark brown black pour.taste of caramel, chocolate, coffee, A little thin but pretty good
1.7 The beer pours out a deep black body with a ruby red edge. Huge eruptive head upon initial pouring, it left behind a bunch of uneven, clumpy/soapy foam. Aroma was rubbing alcohol, light nutty malts, and cooked veggies. Soft coffee aroma started eeking out after about 10 minutes. Flavor is metallic, slight roast. Mouthfeel is over-carbonated, with a "licking a 9 volt" kinda effect...very stinging. Might be one of the worst porters I’ve had.

3.2 Bottle:   Deep dark ruby, heavy brown, frothy beige head, falls quickly, sparce lacing.   Roasty nose, slight cocoa and lactose sweetness.   Soft roasted malts on the tongue, low to nil hop aspect.   Comes across as a little thin.   Unlike their lighter beers, this one doesn’t taste organic.   Body is on the lighter side. Finishes with a sweet roastiness and lactose like tinge.   Better than expected, but could stand to be a bit heavier.
3.0 Reviewed 9/6/2009 (Bottle): Pours a dark dark brown colored body, with a frothy tan colored head. Has a nutty lagery aroma. Some roasted, but a little off. Roasty, cigaretty. Very ashy. Less ashy as it warms. Watery roasted, not very chocolately, or coffee. Not too bad.
2.2 Bottle courtesy of maniac. Pours a clear dark brown with large pillowtop light brown head. Nose is sickly sweet, almost like old milk. Nutty, toasty, roasty flavor is not as bad as the aroma. Extremely thin body, almost watery. Kind of a let down. Blah.
4.2 Aroma is strong and smoky with a firm undertone of molasses, more than a touch of sweetness, and a strong hint of fine coffee - very tempting to a stoutie like me. It pours a dark transparent cola brown with a fairly thick pale tan head. Flavor is not quite as good as the aroma, but it is still pleasing - smoky and oily with tones of coffee and molasses. Only problem is there is a soapy or chalky hint - maybe this was not one of their better batches. Texture is smooth and a little edgy with a fair amount of fizz.
4.4 Dark brown beer with an amber hue. Thin tan head with decent lacing throughout. Sweet chocolate and roasty malt aroma. Chocolate cherry flavor with a roasted malty chocolate finish.
