3.7 Bottle under the "Rock Hard Ten" label. Also had sampled on draft at the brewery. Red-brown, full of air and rising to a firm pillowtop. The beer drinks wtih a definite burn, full of rich full-bodied maltiness and an astringent piney, sappy, oily hoppiness. This is a biggie. (#3395, 4/9/2008)
3.8 22 oz bomber tasted at BrewMasters meeting. Nice orange/amber color with slight head. Couldn’t see head qualities with just a tasting glass. Resin and citrusy hops in aroma and flavor, it balanced well with a sweet, caramel malt backbone. Overall a nice DIPA, not over the top and not world class, just well balanced and worthy of another try.
4.3 65 cl bomber. Courtesy of Papsø. Tasted in comparisson with other IIPAs. Hazy, reddish amber colour with a nice white head. Amazing aroma of hops and great sweet burned caramel. Nice and very tasty flavour of hops and caramel. Ends up very bitter, but in a smooth way as well as a notable alcoholic taste. Definately a great IIPA!
3.4 Bomber. Poured translucent medium orange with just a spotty dusting of white head and some loose bubbles around the edge of the glass. The nose picked up a bunch of deep, complex, and intriguing orange character.. sweetness came from the meat, which was mildly amplified by the booze factor.. spicy tangerine zest accented, and some caramel backed it all up.. as it warmed, some grassy notes emerged. The flavor didn’t quite do it justice.. caramel, grapefruit, and orange at the core with peppery spices, grainy caramel, and tangerine zest at the edges.. alcohol was sharp especially at the finish, and there was a lot of grainy residual sweetness. Thicker-bodied with low carbonation on the palate.. the grainy sugars and the booze threw off the balance a bit. This was decent, but not a good IIPA.
3.7 22oz bottle from mcbackus. With this one being a tad overa year old, its is starting to resemble an American Strong more so than a double IPA. Toffee and caramel malt jsut as heavy on the nose as the wet grass and tangerine hops. Pours clear dark copper with a thick off white head leaving nice sticky lacing. Flavor has lots of pear and peach meat. Citrus zest, pine and a whole lot of sticky caramel and toffee. Medium to full bodied. Not a lot of carbonation with a very lengthy, zesty and dry finish.
3.5 [Bottle, thanks Skyview] Pours hazy orange-amber with an off-white head. Aroma has the citrusy hops that I expected, but they were surprisingly subdued. Taste likewise is subdued citrus (mainly grapefruit), but also a good deal of caramel malt. Quite smooth with medium mouthfeel. Not a bad beer, but didn’t overly impress. This is one of the better organic beers that I have tried though.
4.0 Appearance: Pours a clear, dark amber body small, frothed off-white head. Smell: Redolent scent of sliced grapefruit, grass, and candied oranges set against malty spiced caramel. Taste: Sweet, toasty caramel maltiness transitions right into the earthy, resinous bitter hop flavors of pine, grass, and grapefruit. Moderate bitterness. The heavy malts try to make a comeback, but this is a Double IPA after all. Plenty of bitterness remains for the long, lingering finish. Mouthfeel: A hair above medium-bodied. Medium carbonation. Slight oiliness to the mouthfeel. Drinkability: For one reason or another these organic beers can be a real organic buzzkill, but this one, for all its barshness, is pretty a-ok.
3.5 Thanks to Skyview! Cloudy orange color with no head. Aroma of dried oranges and sidewalk chalk. A very vinous hop flavor. Dry and bitter. Bone dry malt finish. It’s not a screaming hop overloaded as an IIPA can usually be, but it’s nicely balanced and tasty.
3.5 Poured from a 22 oz. bottle. Dark orange and lightly hazed. Very dank and bitter grass aroma with hints of agave, dark biscuits and brown sugar. Well balanced and understated. Mild flavor of peach skins, grapefruit, grass, and honey; very simple, with good bitterness of a refreshing, quaffable character. Reserved crystal presence. Palate is creamy, soft, and somewhat vegetal with an intimation of wheat grass. Highly drinkable. Thanks for sharing, Bob!
3.6 Picked up a single 22-oz bomber at John’s Market Place in Portland, Oregon. Pours a semi-clear amber brew with a decent off-white head that quickly dissipates to a fine film and white ring. Aroma of sweet grapefruit zest, some iced tea, tangerines, and caramel malt, Taste is medium bodied, light carbonation with flavors of grapefruit juice, caramel malt and a touch of brown sugar. Finish is semi-sweet and bitter along with a grapefruit character in the aftertaste. One of the better organic beers I’ve tried to date.
3.3 Grapefruit coloured head, cellared for a year. The best I can say is that it is not too overbittered in taste, and without feeling too overmalted.
3.3 Amber color with a light tan head. Mostly a caramel sweet aroma with some light oxidation. Medium body and smooth. Floral hops appear in the taste at first with caramel malt and some oxidation to finish. Purchased and consumed this beer March 2007.
3.6 Pours a dark honey color with a thick sudsy yellowish white head. Smells of deep alcohol laden citrus. Grapefruit and grass. Very sweet and hoppy taste up front with a bit of a grassy aftertaste. Alcohol on the finish as well. Kind of syrupy but not too thick. Pretty good carbonation for a DiPa. Good brew, but be ready for the alcohol
3.6 I am assuming that this was slightly aged. Poured a hazy orange-ish. Aroma was sweet caramel and fruity malt similar to that of a barleywine. Initial extreme sweetness, almost cloying followed by some nice subdued hop flavors of pine, mint, pepper, and a touch of earth. Never does it really get bitter, but the hop flavor is pretty nice, discernible, and lingering in the finish. Lots of malt make this one pretty full, but the alcohol is almost nonexistent. A good, but not great IIPA.
3.5 Old rating 22oz bottle. Orange color, cream head. Piney and to a lesser extent flowery nose. Taste is honey at first with the bitterness coming on immeadiately. Strong pine along with some spice/flower. The bitterness is offset by the honeyish maltiness. The finish is long and lingering, piney and spicy. A IIPA that is balanced towards the malt, but still a IIPA. Full mouthfeel.
3.8 Pours a deep copper/burned orange with a full head that laces as it slowly dies. Smells bready, caramel, earthy, and grassy, grapefruit hops. Starts sweet then a rush of citrus rind hops that battle with the malt until finally emerging victorious with a lingering bitter finish. Mildly full in the mouth with good carbonation. ABV is somewhat noticeable but this is a huge beer and its well hidden behind the malt/hop battle.
3.9 Shared with Ian, thanks dude for the sweet beer!! Pours dark amber with a thick white head. Big caramel malt and hops aroma. Not a wimpy beer! Very big hop citrus grapefruit aroma. Taste is just a little malty with an explosion of hops that make this big and over the top. A great beer for hop heads.
3.8 Bottle from Whole Foods, Sarasota, FL. Poured a hazy copper color with an average frothy off-white head that mostly lasted with fair lacing. Heavy complex citrus hoppy aroma with a alcohol tone. Medium body with a slick texture. Heavy bittersweet flavor with a heavy bittersweet and small alcohol bite finish of moderate duration. This is a standout beer.
2.7 Herbal grassy nose with a touch of caramel and pine cleaner. Mildly sweet with a vegetative bitterness on the palate. Iced tea and astringent finish.
3.8 Bottle. Orange pour with a white head. Aroma of earthy/grassy hops and caramel malt. Flavors of earthy hops and light caramel. Medium body, bitter with a sweet/bitter finish. Not too shabby.
4.0 Unfiltered thick body- looks like Alexander’s LME. very little head, but what is there is a very white head. Very boozy aroma with a very malty aroma. Huge malt taste with a bit of hops. Very thick and coats the tongue. Not a Double IPA, though. Tastes like it has been oaked. $2.99 for 22 oz at Voorhees Discount Liquor
3.7 Not much on aroma - just a lot of hops. Pours very cloudy, little head, but excellent form and glass lacing. Taste isn’t overpowering, but this one leaves a reasonable aftertaste. Nothing offensive, just a decent DIPA.
3.6 Bottle sampled. Pours hazy light amber with a good size off-white head. Aroma of citrus, caramel, fruit, and piney hops. The flavor is sweet, caramel, citrus, fruit, and finishes with a good amount of bitter hoppiness, alcohol is well masked. Good brew.
3.8 Dark copper pour with hoppy yet almost more roasty malt on the nose. Flavor was nice big and citrus, with a good bit of bittererness. Nice creamy texture that really allows the roasty malt to follow that big hoppy start. Finish was bitter and warm with the higher alcohol.
2.2 Ditto Old_Mr_Crow. He summed it up for me. Really disappointing. Weird, funky nose and a harsh, dry rubbing alcohol taste. Yuck! It takes a lot for me to not enjoy a 2IPA, but this did it. Should have taken the advice of the store clerk, who was less than enthusiastic about this one. But I had to find out for myself, I guess. Next!
3.9 Limited Release 2006 10/22/2007: Butte Creek Organiz Revolution X 10th Anniversary Imperial India Pale Ale pours a hazy golden orange color with a lasting frothy ivory crown. It has a sweet, sugary, aroma that contains plenty of underlying malt and a heavy dose of citrus (candy-like) hops. The flavor has a strong caramel maltiness with a nice level of sweetness and some fruitiness. There is a moderate to high amount of orange, grapefruit, pine and floral hops and bitterness (mostly orange/grapefruit citrus and resin) with some whisky-soaked apricot in the finish. This beer has extremely balanced bittersweet flavor. Surprisingly there is only a touch of alcohol coming through for the 9.1%+ ABV included in it! This beer is full, thick and nearly syrupy. It coats the mouth and palate nicely and has a very smooth texture that is almost creamy. This IIPA is rich and a lot like a barleywine. There is even some chewy caramelized quality in the finish when warmer. As a matter of fact, this beer would probably be best out of a snifter and enjoyed as it it were an American Barleywine! Organic Revolution X is an impressive beer that is still holding on vey well. I bet it was even better when it was really fresh. C’est la vie... 22 fl. oz. bottle (9.1% Alc. by Vol.) from jimbowood (Oct 2006). Thanks jimbo. I really appreciate it! Rating #227 for this beer...
3.7 A solid California IPA that delivers on most accounts. Looks lovely, with a deep amber hue, decent head, and light lacing. Brisk hoppy aroma. One of the strengths of this brew is how well the alcohol (9.1%) is hidden.
3.8 2006 vintage bomber.Pours a slightly hazy amber-orange color. Creates a beautiful, tight and dense beige head with decent retention. Some splotchy lacing is noted. Nose is well balanced between the caramel-laden malts and citrusy/piney hops. Unfortunately, as previous reviewers have noted, this DIPA doesn’t seem to hold up to ageing that well since some aromas and flavors of oxidation are noted. However, they are minimal enough not to totally detract from the enjoyment of this brew. Mouthfeel was eloquent. Smooth, full and creamy. Flavor was a touch oxidized but nicely balanced between the sweet crystal malts and the American west coast citrus-like hops. Although I too sat to long on this one before sampling I did enjoy it and wish I had tried it earlier!!!
3.5 Amber color with a light off-white head. Aroma is sweet with some floral-piney hops and some heavy malts. Flavor is a bit malty (due to time) and the hop profile is still decent with some grass and pine. Not bad - mouthfeel still above average. A bit past its prime, but drinkable
2.8 The smell is not to my liking. The beer smells a little funky! The malts are very rank, and so are the hops. I am a little disappointed in the aroma. Plus, I smelled a lot of yeast. The beer is quite smooth I must say, and the beer is a lot better than I anticipated. Very malty and smooth. A lot of caramel, and sweet malt flavors come from the beer. Not enough hops; not enough hops by far in this beer. The beer looks good and is smooth, but is not that great on an overall scale. I don’t buy into the organic beers. I think they compromise taste.
