Butternuts Moo Thunder

Butternuts Moo Thunder

This stout beer pays tribute to the Butternuts Brewery’s former life as a dairy farm. It’s a more drinkable version of the Stout breed than its heavy, boorish and smelly European sisters. We use lactose sugar for body and mouthfeel; not too strong, not too viscous at 4.9% abv. Unlike a true bovine it has a malty, roasty aroma and a dry finish but no tail or teats, and leaves no unsightly cow pies laying around the yard for you to step in.

3.3 Black with a brown head - Sweet malt aroma with hints of roasted malt - Malt body with hints of roasted malt and some hints of bitterness in the back - The malt and hints of roasted with hints of lactose goes into the finish - This was nice
3.5 355ml can kindly shared by Finn. A bubbly, fawn coloured head with fine duration and lacing rings down the glassware. Near black body. Roasted dark malty aromas, hints of chocolate. Taste of oatmeal and dark chocolate followed by a touch of coffee roasted bitterness. Medium bodied with a rounded mouth feel. Likable (Tromsø 24.08.2016).
3.5 On can from Systembolaget Strømstad. Pitch black color, good offwhite foam. Medium aroma intensity; choclate milk, light coffee, roasty with some leather and vanilla . Medium body & complexity. Balances well. Enjoyable
3.0 Deep brown, low tan head. Aroma chocolate, dark caramel, umami. Taste sweer, roasty and pinch of salt. Very assertive in roastiness. Spoiled by high carbonation, finish with unpleasant fruity esters - which is inappropriate in this style. Not very nice
3.1 Can at Hopyard, april 26th 2016. Black body with a brown head. Aroma of cocoa, lactose, earthy hops, mild coffee. Taste is sweet and sticky, chocolate, balanced by a gentle note of roast, with raisins towards the finish. Pretty sweet stuff, enjoyable, but may be a victim of it’s low abv.
3.3 Can. Assertively roasty, coffee, chocolatey. Mostly bitter, not very milk stouty. Light earthy hoppy flavour. Moderate hops bitterness. Good stout.
3.0 Can, thanks to brewtalita. Black colour, very quickly falling beige head. Aroma is quite weak. roasted and some caramel. Taste is roasted, a bit burnt, caramel, some nutty notes in roasted aftertaste. Very overcarbonated.
3.2 Can via trade from notes. Pours a dark brown color with a small beige head. The aroma and flavor have roasted malt, caramel, chocolate, thinner body, just ok.
3.4 Svart med høyt beige skum. Lukter korn, havre, kaffe og mørk sjokolade. Middels til lett. Lite bitterhet. Noe kaffebitterhet er det. Lett søtlig, sjokolade, noe kandis og salt lakris. Middels lang.
3.5 355ml can. Jet black colour with sma,, to average, thick, creamy, fairly lasting and lacing, beige to tan head. Roasty, chocolately, dark malty aroma, hints of toffee, coffee, a touch of liquorice and malt lozenge. Taste is slightly dry, roasty dark malty, minimally metallic, notes of coffee and dark chocolate, hints of liquorice, subtle hints of lactose, bitter hoppy finish. Not much sweetness, but quite beefy and variegated. Definitely underrated.
4.2 Can @ The Butcher Block. Not sure why the low rating, i’m very picky about my beer, and this was delicious! Not the richest but it was heavy on the malty, dark chocolate & roast flavors. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
4.6 My go-to summertime stout. Light bodies but super roasty and chocolatey, mega crushable all year round.
3.9 Pours deep brown with medium beige head that leaves some lace and skim. Pleasant nose of nuts, coffee and malt. That’s what it delivers in the glass as well, along with milk chocolate. This is lighter than I expected, presenting more as a porter. The brewer’s blurb concedes this point, attempting to distinguish Moo thunder from "heavy, boorish and smelly" European stouts. The slur is unnecessary, but it’s not a complaint to call this a porter, as it is smooth and drinkable, controlled in all respects.
4.8 Pours black with small head, nice creamy palate if perhaps a little light. Very good stout base with slight bitter earthy hint to aftertaste
3.9 Can, from Whole Foods Market, Piccadilly, London. An Easter gift off the missus, in lieu of a chocolate chucky egg. Clear, chestnut brown. Thin, lasting, lacing, light tan head. Nose is milk chocolate. Hazelnuts. Some caramel. Smells great. Taste is milky sweet. Some woody dryness. Smooth mouthfeel. Decent body for the ABV. Loses the sweetness on the finish, and gets light dry, and soft, earthy bitter.
3.8 Can at home. Pours black colour with a beige head. Nice roasty character. Milk chocolate, vanilla, coffee. Smooth and creamy texture. Not bad at all.
3.0 Pours a near black with a foamy tan head. Aroma of roasted coffee. Taste is toasted malt with a dark subtle burnt finish. Mouthfeel is a little thin. The finish is dry.
3.3 Undated can. Nose soft roast, lightly acrid, milky, probably going to be sweet. Pours deep dark brown, opaque in the glass, large sudsy tan head. Taste semi-dry, light-medium bitterness, great mild medium roast that brings out wood and milk chocolate/cocoa, no scorch or ash, very mild acrid character, but generally quite pleasing. Sweetness accumulates, as does a faint mineral sharpness, lactose is there but admirably constrained to low levels. Alcohol shuttered out of sight, medium-full body, aftertaste a bit dirty, but I’d be fine having this again. [2015.12.26: 3.3]
3.3 Can. Poured a very dark brown with a generous frothy head. Aroma of roasted malt, cocoa, vanilla, coffee bean. Medium bodied. Dry finish. Taste light sweetness. Roasted malt, nuts, cocoa. Not too shabby.
2.8 355ml can at a BYOB as ’Butternuts Moo Thunder’. Very tacky looking presentation. Packaged Aug 2015 at 4.9% according to the import sticker. Cola black, big foamy brown head, light lacing. Aroma is molasses, cola, touch of ash. Body is medium to light, tingly carbonation, slightly foamy. Taste is thin cola, dark muscovado sugar, dark bread, kvass, a little yeasty and metallic. Not very good.
3.0 Pour from a 12oz can. Inky dark brew with tan head. Nice aroma of toasted malts with hints of chocolate and coffee. Taste is light toasted malts upfront with a light toasted malt finish. Nice palate. OK. Last brew and least disappointing of the Butternuts sampler I brought back from New York.
3.5 Origin: Tap. Vessel: Tulip. Supplier: Three Brothers Burgers (Bristol). Malty and roasted tones.
3.4 Backlog rating. Keg at the EoE, London. It pours a dark brown color with small beige head. Aroma is roasted malts, lactose, red berries and cocoa. Taste has more milk chocolate, lactose, red berries and roasted wood. Medium bodied with good carbonation. Overall, ok sweet stout
2.8 Sampled from a 12 oz can this beer poured a brown-black color with a large creamy tan head that lingered and left decent lacing. The aroma was dry, roasty, vanilla and coffee. The flavor was bitterish yet semi sweet with lactose, toasty malts, malted milk and vanilla. Turns dryish on the long finish. Medium body. Ok.
3.5 Appearance: Dark brown, some tan head. Aroma: Dark malt, roasted. Taste: Roasted, dark malt, slight coffee. Smooth. Bought: American Tap Room (Reston), 355 ml can, $5.00 Info: 15/9-2015
3.9 I’m surprised how low this beer got rated on here, it’s kind of disappointing. This a really awesome stout. Big notes of chocolate, caramel and toffee in the aroma, with a subtle roasty coffee. Thick but not syrupy, lots of chocolate, caramel and roastyness. Really tasty beer and for the abv you wont get totally crushed. Awesome stout, I’m glad I found it.
3.5 Can from Stags Head NY. Poured opaque brown black with thick tan head. Aroma malty lactose oat roast. Light carb med bod. Drying burnt roast bitter dark choc taste.
3.2 Crisp like a porter with a light mouthfeel from the lactose backing. Not an amazing stout, but still a very drinkable beer.
2.8 Very dark apperance, near black. Tan head, slick mouthfeel. The roasted chocolatey character undermined by its weak acidity. Picked up in Asheville in 2015.
3.5 Pours black, with brown fluffy head and nice head.retention. the aroma is roasted malt, chocolate, some coffee. Not strong. The flavor is chocolate then coffee, with earthy at the rear. The palate is heavier than would have though.
