Buxton Black Rocks

Buxton Black Rocks

Cask, Keg & Bottle Conditioned; Regular. Currently 6.0% in bottle.

Black Rocks is a Black IPA. It is very dark in colour, yet has many characteristics of an India Pale Ale. Late mash additions provide the colour without the harsher, roasted flavours of the dark malts. The beer has a blackcurrant aroma and flavours of liquorice and pithy grapefruit

2.9 Pours black with a brown head. I’m not sure how accurate my tasting was. I feel like the bottle may have been off. I’ll have to try it again.
3.5 Bottle from Taps Beer Bar, Kuala Lumpur. Poured a dark mahogany with a thin broken off white head. The aroma is grassy hop. The flavour is moderate bitter with a yeast, grass nettle hop bitter, light grapefruit sour palate. Medium bodied with average carbonation.
3.9 Bottle at home. Pours black, nose is roasted, chocolate, grapefruit, taste is similar.
4.1 Bottle at home. Dark fruit, bitter chocolate, liquorice with a bit of citrus sweetness. Well balanced malt and hop. Very tasty.,
3.5 Backlog rating. Keg at the Euston Tap, London. It pours a dark brown color with a small off-white head. Aroma is roasted grains, cocoa, cedar wood and pine needles. Taste is medium bitter with roasted grains, pine needles, grass, wood and light earthiness. Finished quite dry. Overall, good one
3.7 Something of the damp night in there with some roasted meat smokiness. Deep black with only a glimmer of an orange line at the bottom of the glass. Reasonably dense tan head. Damp stone to taste with a very dark end.
3.5 Pours a deep black with a thin beige head. Aromas are light, of roasted malts and coffee. Medium body, flavors of black coffee, roasted malts, hops, herbs, and hints of dark chocolate. Nice bitterness with a dry finish. Not sweet. Nice dark brew, with nice taste not overly complex, but nice. (Made in Belgium? got a Belgium code bar on label?)
4.0 Black with a thick light tan head. Aroma is pine, citrus, roast, a little coffee. Taste is a little roasty, nice citrus and pine cutting through, good bitterness
4.0 1/IX/14 - 33cl bottle @ home - bottled: 19/III/14, BB: 19/XII/14 (2014-965) Thanks to JefVerstraete for sharing the bottle! Clear dark purple to brown beer, big creamy irregular beige head, very stable, adhesive. Aroma: hoppy, fruity touch, citrus, soapy, floral, hint of caramel and mocha. MF: ok carbon, medium body. Taste: lots of citrus, bit grassy, roasted malts, coffee, hoppy bitterness. Aftertaste: bit floral, hoppy, some caramel, coffee, cocoa powder, bitter, some citrus.
3.8 Bottle from Deliciously Different. Shared with tderoeck and Erwin. Dark brown colour, beige foam. Creamy mouthfeel. Aroma of coffee, roasted malts, citrus and some fruitiness. Well balanced Black IPA. Very good.
3.7 Draft at Churchkey. Black color, brown edge. Aroma of bright pine and roast. Taste is roasty and bitter, light body.
4.2 Bottle. Pours black with three fingers of beige head. Aroma of grapes, pineapple, mango with some roasty and chocolate notes. Light roastiness. High and long (but not too long) bitterness. Medium body with really nice mouthfeel. Medium carbonation. Very good IPA.
3.1 330ml bottle from The WIne Emporium. Rating from 2013. As far as black IPA’s go this one was quite good. Deep black colour with a hint of light brown foam.
3.9 Pours black with a large lasting head. Nose shows roasted malt, resinous hops, pine and fruit confectionery. Cocoa and roasted malt as flavours along with more of the confectionery. Some pine too. Finishes with a strong hoppy bitterness. Nice creamy carbonation works well.
3.7 (33 cl bottle courtesy of minutemat; Bottled March 19th 2014) Pours black with big, tan, creamy head. Good retention and beautiful lace. Aroma is hoppy with citrus notes. Oily texture, medium carbonation, medium body and a relatively dry and bitter finish. Flavour has more piney notes and is characterised by hop bitterness and less of sweetness. Hardly any toasted character from the dark malt, which is generally the way I like my black IPA. Decent.
3.6 Bottle shared with Mr_H a dark ale with tan head fruity aroma with citrus grapefruit taste that is fresh and crisp
3.4 330ml bottle (bottle conditioned) from Alesela, Glasgow - opaque dark brown, thin beige off-white head, blackcurrant aroma, no lacing, dry, dark malty flavour, bit of liquorice, bittersweet finish
4.2 Bottle from the Beer Emporium, Sandbach. Pour black with a cream head. This is good stuff - starts bitter and hoppy before the chocolatey malts really start to come through. Finishes a little earthy but with a nice dark chocolate aftertaste. The hope notes are citrus and pine and aren’t quite as prominent as they can be in so e BIPAs. This is still top draw though.
3.5 Fine Black IPA with lots of hops and high drinkability. Citrus in the aroma with a balanced bitterness. Some grass in the back finish that one nicely off.
3.7 Draft at Farmers Cabinet. Opaque pour. Tulip. Large tan head. Smooth dark notes. Goes down easy. Almost wish it was more of a challenge.
3.8 Nice light beige head. Dark red brown. Good lacing. Roasted malt, caramel.Hops, citrus pine., grapefruit, orange. Bitter sweet. Soft carbonation.
3.8 Dunkelbraunes Bier mit schöner beigen Schaumkrone. Geruch röstmalzig, Kaffee + schöne herbe fruchtige Aromen. Geschmack röstmalzig, schokoladig, Kaffee, fruchtig, hopfig, bitter, klasse Bier!
3.8 Bottle from redmonds. Pours black with off white wispy white head. Nice lacing on glass. Nose is pine, spruce, liquorice, slight coffee. Flavour is toast, biscuit with drying bitterness on finish. Medium body. Flavours is full and lasting. Medium to high carbonation. Very good.
3.6 Cola brown to black pour. Roasted coffee and toasted brown bread combined with pine and citrus aroma, taste is the same but doesn’t quite live up to the aroma. Nice mouthfeel, overall a strong bipa but slightly underperforming.
3.9 Bottle from beersiveknown - many tahnks, Steve! The beer pours out in a beautiful black colour with low head and medium body. Aroma of dark chocolat and hops. Taste of dark roasted hops, nuts, citrus, spruce, oak, chocolate and leaves. Intense and fresh but also light earthy finish. Highly delicious.
3.9 From 345 ml bottle. Pours a solid inky black with the merest brown highlight at the edge and a sudsy light tan head. Aromas of pine needles, lemon, cocoa powder and flowers. Taste is dominated by a firm pine resin bitterness at the front. That builds to an even firmer citrus peel and pith bitterness which eventually slides away to some rich dark chocolate and coffee at the back end. Not for the faint hearted but really well done.
4.0 Bottle. Pours very dark, almost black, with a mahogany tinge. One and a half finger beige head which is thick and creamy and persists. Aroma- lots of hops, chocolatey malt, liquorice, hints of dark fruit. Quite a bit going on, and the hops dominate. Taste- roasty malts, cocoa, espresso coffee, hop bitterness, fruity notes detectable, lingering bitterness at the end. Medium to full mouthfeel, quite creamy but with a nice amount of carbonation. Very interesting, and very nice.
3.9 Draught Aroma-caramel, citrus Appearance-black, hazy, tan foam, Taste-medium bitterness, light sweetness, Palate-full body, thick feel, soft carbonation, bitter finish Overall-very good
