Buxton / Lervig Trolltunga

Buxton / Lervig Trolltunga

Gooseberry Sour IPA.

Trolltunga is a jutting rock in Norway, hanging 700 metres over lake Ringedalsvatnet. Only the wary tread the path to the very edge. This beer was brewed to celebrate friendship and a love of wild places.

A collaboration with Lervig Aktiebryggeri from Stavanger, Norway.

3.8 Nice fruity aroma and taste - gooseberries are usually massively sour but this ale doesn’t reflect that.... its too sweet so the fruit doesn’t shine and lacked the mouth pucker which disappointed me - lacks punch - the more I drank the more it reminded me of elderflower cordial - very smooth to quaff... again just a bit too smooth. It’s a tad too far down the alcopop path and not grownup enough for a higher octane sour. A nice drink but forgettable.
3.8 Can at a tasting. Cloudy golden. Aroma is lactic with notes of berries and citrus peel. Sourish, lactic, berries, fruity, lemon, grapefruit, bitterish. Medium-bodied, dry. Very nice.
3.9 Can at a tasting. Moderate sourness, rather subtle gooseberry character, mixing well with moderate bitterness and overall fruity character. Overall does not feel too hoppy. Sourness feels quite clean. Easy drinking. Quite good.
3.8 Can. Light hoppy gooseberry aroma and taste, ligbt vinegar notes, light to medium sour, light bitter. Medium body, hoppy gooseberry sour finish. Good.
3.8 Can. Orange golden color with medium white head. Aroma of gooseberries in aroma. Taste, nice elderberry sourness with some light citrus hops. Medium long sour, light bitter finish. Very good.
3.1 Can at Slovak tasting 05/2019. Pours golden color, white head. Aroma of gooseberries. Taste is medium sour, gooseberries, some hops.
3.5 Clear golden beer, white head. Light zesty aroma. Taste is really tart up front, with tangy lemon and and either bitter orange or something else bittersweet and tropical in there. A little grassy hop too which comes through as the soundness starts to mellow. Crisp and tasty there's even a little biscuit in the finish. Couldn't drink loads of it.
2.7 Can 440ml (Beer Merchants) Clear golden colour, small white head. Sour, grassy, citrusy aroma. Light-bodied. Quite watery for its ABV. Gooseberry sourness, some herbal vibe, even kind of salty. Decent sour beer but come on, these are not IPAs.
3.9 Canette 44cl le 02/05/2019. Mousse : Blanche, grosses bulles, s'estompe rapidement. Robe : Dorée, transparente. Nez : Résine, fruité, acidité moyenne, assez amer, groseille, malt. Bouche : Fruité, résine, groseille, acidité moyenne, amertume modérée, malt, biscuit en fin de bouche. Palais : Carbonatation forte, bien équilibré, bonne longueur en bouche.
3.5 Yellowish golden, clear. White head, two fingers, decent retention. Medium carbonation visually. Watery texture with little fizz. Tart aroma, citrics, lots of lemon. Taste is fresh, lemony, sour citrics, sour gooseberry, salty. Medium sour. No bitterness, just sourness. Alcohol well integrated. Tasty Wild Ale.
3.7 Appearance- Clear golden colour with minimal white foam. Aromas- Sweet and hoppy with notes of passionfruit, pineapple and pie as well as hints of gooseberries, mango, mint and lime. Palate- Medium/light body with smooth texture leaving sweet finish. Taste- Whoa, that is tart! Notes of gooseberries, mango and pineapple with touch of lemon, lime and salt. Overall- Fairly light but not watery, defiantly packs a punch right in your mouth and comes out through you ears. Nice!
3.7 clear blond colored beer with a small white head. Taste is fucky, fruity, orange, berries, citrus and nice and sour.
3.3 Pours a pale blonde colour. Taste is quite sour with obvious gooseberry flavours. Quite a nice tasting beer
3.5 0,33 litre bottle from Vinmonopolet Hamar. Clear Golden with white head. Malts, hops, sour, Fruity. OK.
3.7 Color amarillo, prácticamente cristalina. Un dedo de espuma con retención baja. Aroma ligero a malta pale, flores y lúpulos cítricos. Gusto ácido y muy cítrico, lima, limón, grosella y manzana verde, bastante seca. Cuerpo acuoso.
4.2 Lovely punchy gooseberry aroma with heavy hops. Flavours are hops and tart gooseberry with some lemon sherbet. Exactly what you expect from the description. Sour gooseberry IPA. Nuff said. Nice one.
3.7 From keg at Bt The River Brew Co. Hazy gold with a lacy head. Big sour taste, very tart gooseberry. You'll probably either love this one or hate it, I loved it!!
4.0 On tap at Salt House, Galway. Hazy yellow with white head. Very sour with berries and vinegar. Dry high sourness and medium carbonation.
2.4 8/20 does exactly what it says on the tin - a brutal, unforgiving sour, propably the tartest beer i've ever tasted, drank a third of a bottle
3.6 Glass, bierhaus, Galway, Ireland. Sour berries, not much else to it. Cloudy light orange with fluffy head. Cleanses the palette well
4.0 33cl Bottle. Small white layer, medium body. Aroma is gooseberries, roses, berries. Taste is sour
4.2 Sour ale with gooseberries, quite a successful one apparently, tasted from tap at Omnipollo's Hatt in Sweden; collab of Buxton with Lervig, two craft breweries of world class technical and creative level and two I tend to regard as belonging to the very top in Europe in that respect, so obviously expectations were high for this one. Very creamy, egg-white, papery lacing, dense head on a hazy 'old gold' hued beer with warmer peachy tinge. Lovely fresh sour fruit ale aroma: green gooseberries galore, strong sour yoghurt, lemon juice, lime flesh, stewing rhubarb, banana peel, sourdough, kefir, redcurrant. Sour flavour in a quite intensely fruity-acidic way, a ton of green-yellow gooseberries indeed with a sharp, lemony edge, medium carbonation, slick and somewhat creamy mouthfeel; supple sourdoughy base soaked in a very expressive lactic-sour 'yoghurtiness'. This effect of unsugared gooseberry yoghurt makes up the core of this beer and lingers till deep into the finish, with the gooseberries becoming even more expressive in the end - as if effectively sucking up pure gooseberry juice. A tannic berry peel effect adds some depth and dryness. Well done: this is the most gooseberry-esque gooseberry beer I ever had, it's easy to see how this became a hit in the craft beer world. Sour ale at a very intelligent and high level - with the 'IPA' element reduced to a lovely hoppy-lime-like scent adding complexity to the aroma. Buxton once again blows me away - with Lervig adding its own Nordic 'oomph', no doubt.
3.5 33 cl. bottle @ Alex and Suus, shared with Suus. Hazy light amber with a white head. Tropical fruit hops with gooseberries and a light tart note. Taste is sour with some additional sweetness as well. Finish is sour and very dry. Very nice.
