Buxton Tsar

Buxton Tsar

Cask & Bottle conditioned; Regular.

Tsar is rich and powerful, a full bodied Imperial Stout. Malty chocolate, mocha and dark berry fruit-notes preside over a subtle hop profile, whilst a smooth velvety texture in the mouth gives way to a lingering bitter, dark chocolate finish

3.6 Bottled Sep 1st, 2014, drunk 7/23/16, thanks to Brian. Awesome, massively well-retained dark beige head sits atop a dark mahogany body of low clarity. Clean, crisp, clear citrus and floral hops in the nose are somehow still prevalent after all these years. Cocoa, vanilla, biscuit and fudge quickly fill in the gaps as the hops disappear permanently. Choco-graham cracker with good, dry, crunchy coffee notes. Very light raisin-prune character could be more acidic and balancing, but it’s not that sweet, so the relative balance is good. Strong acidity in the mouth, getting bready and very biscuity-chocolatey. I guess the alcohol dosent build up too badly. Pretty nice, though a bit bitter and dry/roasty.
4.0 Thanks Willrunforbeer on this bottle, carried home from England! Aroma of roast, vanilla, char, light ,light coffee. Flavor of cocoa, light coffee, chocolate, and a great chewy, full mouthfeel. The texture is nice and has a full mouthfeel. This is really nice!

3.9 375ML bottle. Thanks WillRun. Smells great. smells like coffee and oak and even whiskey. loads of chocolatey espresso aroma with vanilla. this smells great. Taste is great. smokey, peet, vanilla, espresso. Dense mouthfeel, thick and almost creamy. Peet throughout with ashy charcoal. I think this is fantastic. a traditional imperial stout with a modern finish. Love it was bottle conditioned.
3.0 Old rating transferred to Ratebeer. Very very dark beer, a bit to light body for me for an imp. stout.
3.7 From tap at Fermentoren. Black with a beige head. Aroma and flavour of roasted malt, caramel, dried fruit, chocolate, coffee and vanilla.
4.3 Pours a beautiful black with massive mocha head. Aroma is of chocolate, roasted malts, dark fruit and berries. Tastes of dark berry, dark chocolate, fruit, and roasted malt. Has a creamy full body with low carbonation, and a raspberry bitterness near the end.
4.0 12oz bottle pours a black color with a bit of head. Lots of malt and good amount of hoppiness. Skunky hops.
4.2 How do I love you Buxton let me count the ways.... A dangerous 1/2 pint at Euston tap. Pours oily inky black, tan head. Subtle aroma of coffee. Big big flavours of toast (burnt, in a good way), coffee, dark dark chocolate and treacle. Boozy hit. Stonking stuff.
4.0 Drink from keg. Excellent appear. Lacing 5/5. A lot of bitter choclate, coffee, roasted aromas. Beer full in plate, smooth.
3.8 Draft at Khyber Pass during Tsar Power. Pitch black pour with a huge light brown head. Creamy body. Mocha. Chocolate liquor. Coffee beans. Burnt peanut shells. Blackberries. Currants. The hop element adds a definite character to this brew. To me it only barely works (and slightly detracts). Big and flavorful.
4.0 Pour was pitch black, brown overly super duper frothy head, impossible bottle pour into the tulip, rings and rings of lacing all the way down, steady bubbling resupplying the foam between sips. Aroma of chocolate, roast and ash, dark fruits, pine, and some styrofoam. Flavor followed all of that, some licorice and earthy coffee notes under it all. Warmer temperatures brought out some of the darker fruits more in the flavor. Mouthfeel was invigorating with the carbonation, drinking lighter in feel than one would guess, dry finish.
4.2 Head is dark brown, thick, creamy and very lasting, leaves lacing as it atenuates. Full bodied, jet black color, medium carbonation. Aroma starts with dark chocolate and moves on to ripe plums as it warms, also a bit of roasted coffee grains. Taste follows the aroma with even more presence of plums, a lingering coffee bitterness, well hiding alcohol finishing a little warm. Very nice imperial stout.
3.8 Bevuta in bottiglia da 33 comprata a lo sfuso a torino. Veramente un’ottima imperial stout in stile. Finale efigpere.
4.3 Kick 290115. Black colour with a brown head. Aroma is roasted malt, coffee, alcohol. Flavour is roasted malt, coffee, cocoa, chocolate, mocha, pine, berries. Full body. Smooth and a very nice beer.
4.0 On tap @ Kick. Dark, dark brown, almost black body with a nice looking, dense, beige head. Aroma has dark medium roasted malt, chocolate, coffee, dry fruit and hint of pine. Flavor is sweet, roasted malt, chocolate, coffee, fruit, berries, pine and good bitterness. Fine body and good, long lasting aftertaste. Very smooth and rich flavored Imp. stout without overdoing anything. Great beer.
4.1 Tap@Taproom Malmö , Malmö - pours black with tan head. Aroma and taste is a nice balance of sweet and dark roasted malts, with rich chocolate prominence, mocha, caramel, lovely subtle vanilla nuances throughout, roasted finish. Solid impy
4.0 Draught sample at Malmö Taproom. Pitch black with a thin tanned head. Roasted aroma with dark malts, liquorice, coffee and caramel malts. Taste is bitter. Full body with an oily texture and a soft carbonation. Finishes lasting dry roasted bitter with dark malts. Lovely Stout.
4.0 Buxton’s RIS, shared by Jan, cheers! Thick, dense, creamy, beige head over a jet black beer. Aroma of charcoal, unsugared bitter chocolate, toasted walnut, soy sauce, mocha, dried fig, black pepper, touch of smoked herring, cigar ashes, biltong, dried seaweed, nutmeg. Very umami taste in onset, meaty and dried mushroom accents, very little sweetness, soft background blackberry sourish touch, soft carbo, very thick, fat, oily mouthfeel, supple and not too ’heavy’, deep dark bitter maltiness, bit ashy, unsweetened chocolate and mocha again, roasted bitterness in the end reinforced by a strong dosis of peppery, spicy hop bitterness, some warming whisky-like alcohol in the end. Very dry, roasted, charcoal-like and somewhat demanding, but highly enjoyable example of the style.
3.7 Aroma is mocha and dark-fruit. It is black with a dark brown head. Head is a consisent 1-2 fingers on every pour. Very light and smooth for a RIS.
3.3 Pours a black color with huge brown head. Surprisingly light body for being imperial
3.9 From tap at Craft & Draft. Dik romig schuimig koffie zwaar gehopt (Target?) lijkt op eigen RIS brouwsel. Backlog from 2015/10/29.
4.1 0,33l bottle at home from trade with minutemat, big thanks. Bottled 13/03/2015. BB 13/03/2017. black color, tiny coffee-colored head. smells of malty roast, licorice, vanilla, some cocoa, some dried fruits, light coffee. decent smell. creamy body, soft carbonation, slick mouthfeel. tastes of cocoa, earthy, roast, coffee, bitter chocolate, light licorice, light sweetness, some nuts, light spices, some lacto. finishes with some roast and lacto and taste of coffee and cocoa. very nice taste. did not like the smell so much, because too much vanilla, but taste is very nice and creamy (and luckiliy no vanilla). Overall great beer, drinks very nice.
4.1 Bottle from hops & crafts Exeter . Near black with a dark beige head . Aroma s dark fruits & malt ,but doesn’t prepare you for the taste explosion to follow which is complex piney hop, pineapple?sweet malt ,chocolate ,coffee & polished leatherw, the palate is smooth ,oily medium to full bodied ,medium carbonation ,bitter sweet ,dry ,salty malty ,hoppy finish . Imperial Russian Stout as it should be !!!
3.8 In Stockholm, shared with Mathieu87. APPEARANCE: pitch black beer, small unstable beige head. NOSE: chocolate, coffee, oak. TASTE: chocolate, coffee, oak, some herbs, nice.
3.9 Draught @ BBB. Pours viscous black with a small mocha head that doesn’t leave much trace while dissipating. Smell is malty with roasted malts, burnt caramel, toasted cereal, dark roast coffee, bitter chocolate, mineral rich soil, molasses and hints of alcohol. Taste is sweet, heavy bitter and malty. Mouthfeel is round, tiny viscous, roasted astringent, slightly boozy and medium to full bodied. Finish is sweet and heavy bitter with roasted malts, burnt caramel, dark roast coffee, bitter chocolate, dried pine needles, moist soil, molasses and hints of alcohol. Straightforward tasty imperial stout.
4.4 Mooie zwarte kleur met een goede kraag. Dikke structuur. Ruikt vol koffie, vanille, gebrande mout. Beetje alcohol. Smaakt vol houtig, vanille koffie. Beetje alcohol. Lekker.
4.2 I think I drank this bottle at too cold a temperature. There was a huge foamy frothy tan head. Aroma is nice, complex with black malt, pumpernickel bread, blood, anise, leather, lumber. Flavor’s like nose plus fairly dry, mint, some carbonic tang. strong bitter. Body is decent. Good beer. Be interested in trying it again at proper temp, but that’s all --- so far.
