2.4 Cask at Edmunds brew house; clear copper pour with a creamy magnolia head, aroma has red fruits and smokey malts, taste has malts, fruits, basic.
3.1 Amber. Malty. Some toffee.Nice Scottish heavy . Palate good. Overall seems about right to me.
3.7 Was actually an Edinburgh Castle at The Crystal Palace (JDW) in Glasgow. A darker golden, almost brown colour.
3.2 Poirs an amber brown colour. Taste is quite sweet and malty. A lovely example of a Scottish Heavy
3.5 Quite smoky, easily the dominant aroma and flavour. Good, full bodies malt flavour. Low carbonation. Had at St Christophers inn London.
2.5 August 14, 2015. Bottle, as Caledonian Edinburgh Castle.Tasting at omhper, thanks for sharing! Amber with a small off-white head. Aroma is malty with caramel, some dark bread, slight buttery and floral. Taste is light to medium sweet malty, light bitter with with some floral notes and a touch of citrus, a very light sour note as well. Medium bodied, average, small bubble carbonation.
3.2 Dark pour with a brown head. Aroma is sweet and roasted. Body is mild, chocolate, sweet. A roasted malt finish.
2.8 Nice head but after that could have been a mass produced 80 shilling on keg. Nothing stood out but then I’m not really a fan of the malt heavy style.
2.7 Bottled as Edinburgh Castle, deep brown with a big off-white head, faintly sweet malt and metal nose, gassy, sweet and lightly earthy hop-bitter on the palate, a distant metallic twang and a touch of toffee.
3.4 Nice red brown colour. Aroma and flavour are malty with light nutty and caramel notes. Good session bitter.
3.0 Cask at The City Hotel, Durham, £3/pint. Good-looking red-amber beer with a smooth, off-white head. The nose has sweet cereal, buttered popcorn and a hint of tropical fruit. The palate is smooth but the taste is a little too bitter with loads of grassy hop flavours. Reasonable bitter.
1.9 How: Bottle, as Caledonian Edinburgh Castle. Where: Tasting at omhper, 2015-08-14. Appearance: Light brown colour with an off-white head. Aroma: Sweet malt, caramel, hops. Body: Thin body, medium carbonation. Flavour: Sweet malt, some butter, a bit of caramel and grass. Rather boring.
3.1 Bottle from homebargains, wednesbury. Mahoghany beer with medium head. Aroma is malty, some toffee and some light smoke. Taste is malty, light yeast and caramel. Decent.
3.0 500ml bottle on 25th Sep 2015 during a random tasting evening with myself. Clean amber body, off-white head that didn’t start deep and soon turned into a wisp and collar. Malty brew and semi-sweet in nature. Not got an 80 Shilling depth of flavour or body texture compared to what I remember when living up in Morayshire in the 1980’s but enjoyable all the same. Earlier Rating: 5/13/2012 Total Score: 4 July 2008: Dark brown 500ml bottle, caught just before it went out of date (in three weeks). Poured into my new La Chouffe glass two and a half times. Deep, clear mahogany colour with a good foaming slightly off-white head. Looked good to me. A real chocolate aroma to it and some toasted caramel with a coffee hint too. Rich roasted malt flavour, the chocolate, caramel and coffee in the aroma are not so prominent, but they are present in the taste. This isn’t a creamy thick beer, but nor is it a wishy washy thin one. It is just about right. Impressed, this is good and an ideal winter drinking beer, even at the low 4.1%, it punches well above its alcohol weight.
3.2 500ml bottle. Clear, deep copper colour with thin off white head. Aroma is caramel, roasted malt.Taste is similar. Absolutely ok Earlier Rating: 8/29/2014 Total Score: 3.6 500ml bottle, pours reddy brown with a thick, creamy head. Taste is sweet malt with a little bitterness. Nice
3.5 Bottle. Brown with a small head.Slightly malty with a medium body. Pleasant but nothing out of the ordinary. Earlier Rating: 2/8/2007 Total Score: 3.8 Bottle. Bronze and fruity with a gentle hoppiness.Very, very easy to drink with a lovely lingering aftertaste.
2.2 Bottled. Clear amber, small head. Buttery caramel aroma. Sweet with light body and rounded mouthfeel. Sugar, soap and caramel. Low bitterness. Dull. Earlier Rating: 2/25/2002 Total Score: 2.9 Nut brown. Softly malty, rather sweet, and lightly roasty.
2.3 Amber with creamy tan head. Caramel, some red berries and floral. Sweet, some sourness and floral finish. Overall : nice appearance and creamy palate
3.3 Handpump, the Tyndrum Inn, nice looking beer, dark amber with a tight white head. Good malty palate, nice flavoursome brew! Earlier Rating: 5/21/2005 Total Score: 2 What has happened to this beer? It used to be big smooth and deliciously malty. That has all but gone, to be replaced with a bland, grainy, sweet imposter. Unfortunately I cant see S&N returning to original style, I live in (vain) hope.
3.4 Pours a deep red brown, little to no head. Good aroma and notes of caramel. Good malt level. Carbonation not too much. Full bodied not watery.
3.1 On cask at the Jolly Botanist. Appearance - light amber with a decent head. Nose - toffee and brown malt. Nuts. Taste - more of the same. Palate - light to medium bodied with a creamy texture and a fairly good finish. Overall - solid but not special. Earlier Rating: 6/19/2011 Total Score: 2.3 50cl bottle. Pours a chestnut colour with a decent head. The nose has malt and burnt raisins. The taste has more burnt raisins and malt. The palate is medium in structure and texture and it does not clean at the end at all - there’s a horrible lingering burnt malt note. Overall, this strangely tastes better the more you drink - something to do with numbing the taste buds.
2.7 Pours toffee brown with a dense cream head. Aroma is mainly basil. Taste is basil, slight toffee, various herbs. Slightly watery body
2.5 500ml bottle from Lidl. Dark, amber ale with light head. Caramel taste, with malt aftertaste. Drinkable but unremarkable. Would go well with crisps or nuts.
2.4 Pours copper brown with thin white head which lasts. Aroma is toffee malt, grain/corn, buttery, cabbage and grassy. Taste is mildly sweet and bitter, thin and watery in the mouth. Drinkable but not a great beer.
2.6 Cask at Ryrie’s. Pours slightly hazy brown. Nose is Syrupy malts, toffee. Taste is bitter biscuity and bready malts, toffee. Not good.
3.2 500 ml bottle with a BB date stamp of 31 Jan. 2016. Poured deep red-amber with a decent size tan head that displayed very good retention and left ample lacing on the glass. Feel: medium-full body with medium carbonation. Flavor: lightly hops such that the hops are obvious but the ale is just mildly bitter and about equally malty and hoppy. O: wel crafted but not very interesting or complex
3.0 500ml bottle from Tesco. Pours clear amber-brown, short-lived off-white head. Aromas of toffee and a light herbal note. Taste is sweet and thin. Sweet finish.
