3.3 Bottle at Cantillon, Brussels. Clear copper/amber beer with a nice beige head. Malty caramel aroma, grapes, tart, vinous, some floral notes. Sour fruity caramel flavor, grapes, raisins, yeasty notes, floral and herbal. Odd and not the best Zwanze.
3.7 Pours a dark Amber color and the nose is berries and dark fruit. Taste is not very tart; mostly sweet and grainy.
3.0 Bottle @ cantillon. Pours hazy amber with a white head. Aroma of green tea, oxidized hops, herbal, like an old dipa, barley, dried fruits. It’s a mess.
3.2 Bottle at Cantillon. Hazy dark golden with a lasting white head. Malty aroma with herbal and funky notes. Malty flavour with a little caramel, fruit and funk. At the same time hoppy bitter and lambic tart, and it’s not working out well.
4.0 Amber colour. Nice white head. Apples, raisins, sherry, muscat wine, strong black tea in the aroma. Vinegar at first, reminds tea which is made from roseberries, hints of sherry, bitter, white wine finish.
3.4 Bottle @ Cantillon 15/5-15. Fruity, dried fruity with some cheese, also brett. Dry finish with some bitterness.
3.7 At Cantillon. Clear copper with thin white head. White raisins, rye, light spices, basil, green leaves. Sour with syrupy sweetness and hoppy bitterness. A bit too many strong flavors in the palate. Body is thin to medium. Carbo is very low. The bitterness, sweetness and sourness are a bit struggling to go along well. The bitterness leaves a bit of a stale finish.
3.7 Bottle shared at Cantillon. Very slight hazy amber with off white head. Light sweet malts, caramel and soft rye notes. Green leaves, hay, light funk and herbs. Then there’s some white wine notes with white raisins, light peach and gooseberries. Light sweet, sour and bitter in almost equal amounts. Medium bodied with sparkly carbonation.
3.3 Bottle at Cantillon. Pours an almost clear amber with a small, off White head. Aroma has lots of caramel malts, dates, tartness and funk, vanilla, oak. Taste is sour, leathery, still fairly sweet and caramelish. Not very complex, but very different. Harsh and leathery. AVG. Carb, oily body. Not very good.
3.8 @ Cantillon 15-10-30: Stor doft av trä. Smaken är inte alls syrlig, men med lite källartonar och torkat frukt.
3.7 Bottle at Cantillon. Hazy orange/amber with a white head. Aroma and taste of funk, oak, grapes, some caramel, berries and some hay. A bit bitter and with a rather sweet finish. A solid one
3.8 Bottle @ Cantillon. Pours hazy orange with a medium white head. Aromas of caramel, malt, tart notes, yeast, cheese, funk. Taste is cheesy, bitter, malty, caramel, tart citrus, orange, yeast, grapefruit peel.
3.7 Aroma of hay, caramel, a bit of banana-bubblegum, with a nice lambic undertone, the tripel part of it seems to overtake it a bit, and feels slightly oxidized. Very different and nice beer, but the refreshing notes seem to have disappeared, and leaves more of a heavier, but not so full on tasting beer.
3.8 (Cantillon Zwanze (2013) Abbaye de Cureghem) Tap 250 ml at Moeder Lambic during Zwanze Day. Deep orange to amber, with a small frothy head on top. Average retention. Nice aroma, grape-y,some candy sugar, wood, vinous notes. Taste is mildly sweet and sour, light grapes, lemon, vinous notes. Medium thin body, a bit high on carbonation. Nice
3.6 Bottle at the brewery. Pours orange amber with a beige head. Aroma has some caramel, vanilla, oak, leather and funk. The taste has some caramel, leather, balsamic, grapefruit feel and is pretty bitter, sweet and funky at the same time. Strange and unexpected indeed.
3.6 From tap at Chez Moeder Lambic Fontainas. Hazy dark amber color with off white head. Sweet malty aroma, fruity, light yeasty. Sweet and light acidic taste. Medium oily body with soft carbonation.
4.0 Bottiglia 75 @ thedome. Chiara con schiuma non troppo persistente. Meno acida delle cantillon classiche, un pelo di frutta, molto beverina
4.1 Drank this complicated beauty at this years Zwanze day at Mother Lambic Fontainas. I got a lovely glass of light brown orange-amber beer with a thin, white, open moussy head in front of me... Right... where for Lambicssake do you start discribing this sort of beer?! I’ll just jot down what I found, but don’t think that’s all to it, there’s a world more in there, but I don’t have all day, so you better start exploring that in your own time... The aroma I found was of sour grapes, wet leather, (unripe and green) fruit, beautiful lactic acidic notes, hint of orange like fruit, grape peel, and unfortunately (although apparently in Lambiek and Geuze completely accepted and normal) slight urinal whiff underlaying it all. This beer has an almost yoghurt-like soft sourness to its taste, with grape peel, sour plum, peach, grapefruit, notes of old sherry, earthy hints of hops that come from the background, nutty notes too. It’s got a bitter and sour aftertaste well balanced, and a silky, oily mouthfeel which is not too dry, infact I would tag this beer as rather fruity! And that rimes (how naff...) with what it is; a beauty! Actually, dissecting this kind of beer is fine and all that, but I think only poetry is best adapted and suited to describe this kind of craftmanship. Who knows, maybe I’ll give that a go one day, when imbibed with enough inspiration...!
3.4 Draught shared at Moeder Lambic Fontainas on Zwanze 2015, merci oldmanriver. One of the odder specimens of the odd crossover style "Tripel Geuze" of which Vicaris is a more precise and shining example. Smells like soggy, musty-sweet earth after rainfall, peachy tripel esters turned into an antedeluvial decomposing orchard. Same boggy mustiness in taste, where quality honey malts and forward bitter hops linger as a shadow of themselves, dried out by Cantillon funk imprecisions. Unsure of what the taste wants to be, could just as well be a cellared and oxidised Belgian Abbey Tripel...
3.1 Draught at Chez Moeder Lambic Fontainas, Brussels, Belgium. Hazy amber, medium white head. Bready, nutty, slightly alcoholic, some floral hops. Medium to full bodied, medium carbonation. Dry, medium bitterness, low acidity.
4.0 Zwanze edition of 2013, for sale at Moeder Lambic Fontainas during this year’s Zwanze Day. Apparently a ’coupage’ of abbey tripel (hence the name) with 10% Cantillon lambic, further ’lambicized’ by wild refermentation. Sticky, off-white, thick and irregular head over a hazy orange amber coloured beer. Strong and surprisingly unusual, yet appealing aroma of old sherry, wet hay, gooseberries, peach, fresh orange, wet leather, honey sweetness peeping through, medlar, yoghurt. Very estery onset, green plum, orange, redcurrant, sherry vinegar sourness forming a thin line of acidity from beginning to end but the overall profile is softly tart with sedated lactic acidity, albeit very refreshing; bready malts and wheaty ’soapiness’ make up the backbone, there is a certain citrus peel freshness to it, and in the end a deep, earthy echo of hops can be felt from underneath the tartness; lambic ’funkiness’ further dries the finish. One of the most unusual ’versnijbieren’ I had so far but certainly pleasing.
3.7 (750ml bottle @ the Cantillon brewery, July 28 2015) Pours lights hazed deep amber with a small white head lingering with lace. Aroma is stewed pears, dates, candy sugar or Demerara, tart. On the palate, an unholy collision of sweet, sour acid and serious bitterness. Notes of citrus juice, especially grapefruit, underripe apricot, lactic, some grainy and caramel malts, finish is bitter and tannic with a lot of wood, grain and a bit of pith. Light to medium bodied with a higher than average carb. Well, it’s definitely odd! It’s not bad, though it’s not what you expect from Cantillon going in. If you suspend that it is a fairly interesting if not excellent beer on its own merits. Glad I tried it.
4.2 Pours a hazy golden amber color with white head. Funk, tartness, spice and light fruits on the nose; follows onto the palate. Finishes spicy, tart, and dry.
3.6 Bottle (750 ml) @ Cantillon 150515. Fruity, bretty and malty with dried fruits and blue cheese, medium body with an oily texture. The finish is dry and fruity.
3.7 Bottle - pours Amber. Tart and sweet nose. Taste is malty, acidic, grassy, earthy notes.
3.8 Bottle at Cantillon. Opaque amber pour with a white head. Malty aromas. Malty with muted sour notes. Hop characteristics with mild sour lemon and citrus backbeats. Average body and mouthfeel.
3.4 Bottle to glass at the brewery. Pours an amber color with a small white head. Very different than the other beers I tried at the brewery. Has a trappist character to it, candy sugar, minimal tartness. Smooth and a bit boozy. Nothing compared to the other offerings at Cantillon.
3.6 Bottle. Amber with white head. Aroma of raisins, grapes, oxidised notes, resin, musty. Taste is oxidised, resinous, caramel. Quite sour. Tastes a bit like a very old ipa.
2.2 Old notes. Draught @ Akkurat. Zwanze Day 2013, 14th Sept. App: Amber, slight haze, short dirt white head. Aroma: Some toffee/caramel, oranges, red/yellow apples, earthy, bitter weeds, sap, some cranberrie juice, paprika, some stale dirty water. Taste: Grapefruit, lemon, apples, young nectarines, some straw, dry bitter finish with sap and raw vegetables. Palate: Medium body, soft tickling bubbles, woody harsh texture. Overall: What a crash! Afterwards it actually feels like I’ve been drinking some kind of geueze, but during it felt more like a bad home brew IPA that went down the drain. Feels like there should be some sweetness there, but it’s dry and harsh like a desert with only Aspirin to eat. Raw sharp bitterness that clashes with a dry acidity. Stale earthy notes. Phew!
3.7 Darker than usual orange color. Funky and aroma hops. Caramel. Toast. Bitter. Sourness fits in well. A crazy beer, so complex. Doesn?t really give a bigger picture. I appreciate it, but it?s just too much...
