3.6 Pours a dark reddish brown - a solidly made dunkel - roasted nuts, toffee, and dark bread throughout, with balancing a acidity, mild bitterness, and an earthy, leafy character - full, creamy texture - crusty pumpernickel finish - solid.
3.3 Reddish brown is the pour on this one, with off-white colored head. Lots of rich bready notes on the nose. Caramel and bread on the palate. Finishes with just a hint of hops.
3.1 Bottle. Sweet brown bread barley malt aroma. Clear dark brown with a very large beige head. Toasty brown bread/barley malt flavor with a light bitter finish. Medium body, soft carbonation.
3.4 Ruby color with a lacing tan head. Aroma is full of roasted malt, slight toffee and caramel, and cream. Taste is moderately sweet with a strong body and an oily finish. Great great beer.
3.3 Pours a clear dark garnet/brown with an initially big off white head that diminished rather quickly. Aroma is roasted malt and cocoa. Taste is sweet roasted malt along with some buttery biscuits, coffee and mild bitterness. Very goo9d, but I disagree with the product description. The FINEST dunkel brewed in the United States is made at the Hofbrauhaus in Newport, KY.
3.9 Sweet molasses with a touch of smoke appears in the aroma with more complexity in flavor. While malt is the dominant element, hops also make a contribution. Hops add a touch of chalkiness to the mouthfeel.
3.4 Bottle. Pours a dark amber brown with no head. Nose is roasted malt and caramel. Taste is light with malt and some hints of chocolate. Not a lager lover but this was drinkable with some flavor. Finish is short, and light. Quaff Score ( from an ale drinker ) 6 / 10
3.1 Pours brown with a beige head and aroma of caramel and roasted malt. Taste is of roasted malt , chocolate, and caramel with a nutty finish while light and goes down easy. Drinkable and nice for the style
3.3 On tap at the brewpub. Comes a clear dark reddish brown with a small biege head. Aroma of malt, caramel, and nuts. Taste is sweet malt, caramel, nuts, bread, and a touch of hops. Very nice.
3.5 12oz bottle poured into a shaker. Pours a dark nut brown with minimal head. Aroma of caramel and roasty nuts. Taste is light bitter and light sweet. Pretty good brew. I dont think its super special, but very solid.
3.5 Bottle from Traut garage....interesting source; good to great beer. Pours dark red/brown with thin head. Nose is sweet caramel and nutty....as is initial taste...sweet with a yeasty / bread taste....nutty taste comes out as it warms....very good....not much different than many brown ales...but tasty.
3.3 Slightly yeasty, earthy aroma. Pours a clear dark brown. Ample, pale tan, airy head - dissipates quickly leaving a thin froth ring. Flavors take a moment to appear, but has a lingering roastiness, walnuts, a hint of pepper on the finish. Medium to light body, but satisfying and refreshing. A good session beer.
3.2 Poured a dark red/brown with a light head and minimal lacing. Aroma was of roasted malts and hops boquet. Taste was of roasted malts, caramel, nuttiness and moderate hop finish. Palate was decent. Overall, a nice dark larger from Middleton.
3.4 Dark brown. Dissipating head. Thin to medium body. Roasty, toasty, nutty. Some drying bitter. Solid but not blown away
3.3 12 oz bottle pours a clear dark brown with small off-white head and a little lacing. Aroma is full of roasted malts, tree bark, walnut and bread. Medium body with average carbonation. Taste is slightly bitter with the nutty finish a dunkel should have.
2.9 Aggressively smoky malt and considerable tree-bark bitterness with a mismatched palate that’s watery and fizzy like diet soda. Alcohol comes through in the finish. Adjuncty sweetness builds up in the mouth throughout the drink and sticks around.
3.4 Sampled at 10/13/2012 at GABF. This Dunkel pours a medium amber color from the tap. Large to medium sized white foamy head. The aroma is caramel, bready and sweet. A medium bodied Dunkel. The malts are caramel, bready and sweet. The hops are earthy and spicy. Nice carbonation. Nice balance. A crisp and clean, slightly sweet Dunkel. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. The aftertaste is slightly bitter.
3.1 Sampled at GABF on Saturday October 13, first session Clear brown color, light brown head. Sweet, butterscotch scent. Butterscotch, sweet taste. Medium mouthfeel, low bitterness.
3.4 Pours a clear very dark brown with a one-finger head that leave no lacing. Dark, roasted malt predominates but accompanies some nutty and bready aromas as well with perhaps a touch of chocolate. Light herbal hops. Thin to medium body with fizzy carbonation. Medium finish of roasted malt and coffee with a little tobacco. This is pretty good.
3.5 A pretty good dunkel. Malty rich but not too chewy. Mildly toasty. Easy drinking. Serving: Bottle
3.1 Not much aroma to speak of, just some caramel malt. Taste is mostly malt as well. Some caramel and maybe a touch of coffee. It is a smooth drinker, just not very much going on.
2.9 Small head, off white, fair lacing, mostly diminishing, clear, dark brown/black. Malty toasted aroma Sweet acidic flavor Medium body, watery to oily, soft carbonation
2.9 Very dark with an earthy taste. Our original garden brau according to label. A lager not an ale.
3.7 Rich sweet dark grain odor. Dark amber with a long-lasting ivory head and spots of lace. This is a one-hit wonder, but a very good one. Taste begins ands ends with a full-bodied bitter caramel malt that is both light and satisfying. Very drinkable, not filling, consistent in flavor, a solid choice for sessioning. Recommended.
3.0 Bottle from Breeze Thru. Pours a clear reddish brown with faint carbonation and very little head. Aroma has spicy notes with caramel malt, plums and some earthy/barley old tavern-ness to it. Taste is of raisins, bread, sweet caramel. Somewhat light and a bit sour. Finishes short with a fizziness; sweet and tangy. Malt differences - is that the separation between this style and a vienna? It is an easy drinker, however, no need to revisit this style as it does not have the depth or richness I am looking for in flavor.
3.5 Dark brown with red highlights, small off-white head. Dark lager aroma with lots of roast, a bit of smoke, and some very subtle nobel hops. The flavor is a tad sweet at first, with toasted malts, then, a burst of carbonation brings balancing hops that clean it all up. Crisp, almost dry finish with lingering toast. Pretty solid.
3.3 Bottle. Dark amber pour with a smaller white head. Aroma is bready malts with some roastiness - very nice. Medium to lighter palate. Taste is also caramel malt, with a touch of roast and chocolate. Very enjoyable and easy drinking.
3.7 The aroma of this is malts and grainy. The flavor is malty with some grainy sweetness. Overall this was solid dunkel, easy to drink, not very complex but still very good.
3.7 On tap at the Capital Brewery Tap Haus. I don’t typically drink dark beers, but I ordered a flight (4 small glasses) and this one was easily my favorite. Dark amber color, medium body, creamy - great blend not too sweet or too bitter.
3.0 This beer is really pretty decent, but still nothing much to it. I like some more complexity.
