Captain Lawrence Cuvee de Castleton

Captain Lawrence Cuvee de Castleton

This is a beer that will make you rethink your definition of beer. It doesn’t taste like any beer you’ve ever had, yet it doesn’t taste like anything else either. Pushing the limits of brewing is what makes this job so much fun. Malted barley, wild yeast, hand picked Muscat Grapes, and French oak wine barrels are just a few of the things that went into crafting this beer. Breathe deep, take a long sip, and enjoy the creation in your hand.

3.7 Yellow color, minimal white head. Tart and sweet aromas of citrus, spices, white wine and wine gums. Tart taste with grapes, white wine, sour candy, yeast and earth.
4.0 Flaska från SB, vintage 2017. Smådisig gulguldig med vit krona. Riktigt fin och djup doft med massor av druvor, vinfat, lite syltig aprikos och sultanrussin, stall och funkiga inslag. Mellanstor kropp. Fin fatkaraktär. Lite oljig inledningsvis, men avslutas torrare. I smaken vita druvor, litchi, krusbär, citrus, skalbeska, vinfat, druvskal. Funkig och stram, torr avslutning. Riktigt trevlig.
3.3 375ml bottle from Systembolaget. Hazy golden with a small white head that disappears quickly and completely, no lacing. Mature oaky aroma, violets and licorice, rich on grapes and grassy. Tart and dry mouthfeel, soft carbonation. Tart taste, green apples, green and blue grapes, oak barrels, woody, musty red apples. Long tart finish.
4.1 Pours hazy golden with a very low white head. Aromas of farmhouse, oak, minerals, green apples, green grapes, gooseberry. Taste is lots of farmhouse notes and some overripe fruit with cellar and umami notes. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with moderate carbonation and dry.
4.2 Pours cloudy golden with minimal head. Aromas light tart and funky with notes of grapes, oranges, citrus, oak, hints of vanilla and over ripe apples. Taste has nice funky and light tart notes of barnyard, citrus, grapes, oak, vanilla, peach, apricot, over ripe red apples
3.8 Bottle, grape notes, vineous, grains, light oak, grape skin, citrus and light sour. Quite balanced but missing some depth
3.8 cloudy gold pour from bottle. wine grapes, funky yeast, sour and citrus pretty good.
4.1 On tap at Blind Tiger, NYC. Pours cloudy golden with medium white head. Fruity, grapes, peach, vinous, wood, funk, medium sourness. Soft texture. Dry. Medium bodied.
3.9 Tap, ADT. Clear gold with a thin white head and good lacing. Little of everything in here - wine, wood, peach, yeast, funk, pepper, citrus - all in a nicely sour package. Light carbonation. Lingering sour finish, excellent.
4.2 From Aug 2008 This is a Batch 2 bottle: When I popped the cap, it started to *slowly* gush but not a drop was lost! A hazy straw yellow colour, the foam was about an inch deep max with some good lacing. The smell is very nice! Some tartness, some fruitiness that's mostly citrus lemon and grape I think, and a good amount of a nose brought on by the Brett. This one smells delicious. The taste has a very tasty tartness up front with good notes of lime with some lemon, grape that is semisweet, wood, some Brett that is more noticeable in the nose than the taste but yeah, it's there. Ahhh. No sign of the alcohol at all in either the nose or the taste and that kicks up the drinkability big time. Mouthfeel falls just short of medium with the carbonation being on the lighter side of heavy and man that works for me. It finishes with a mix of tartness and slight funk and has a rather short lived aftertaste. Great brew here!! Btw, second pour got it all cloudy and the foam left right after I put the bottle down so...it's not the best looker in a glass(cloudy is fine by me) but it sure makes up for it with the smell and taste. This 750ml bottle will be doubly easy to finish and I plant it firmly in the "exceptional drinkability" category. Bottom line: When I look to try an American Wild Ale, I want all sorts of flavours and smell to go on and *this* one fits the bill superbly! I cannot recommend this brew highly enough!! I once again salute Captain Lawrence for their brewing skills!!
3.9 Draught @ Merrion Square Pub. Clear golden with very small frothy whitish head, acidic grape aroma, low carbonation, mildly sour taste with grape flavor, alcohol undertones, bit of woodsyflavor, smooth body, long lightly woodsy finish. Very smooth and complex flavor profile.
4.1 This really is something special like Ed Grapefruit and grape. Some tangerine. Very nicely integrated. A little wine barrel. Golden pour with good head. Light tangy finish. Very drinkable sour. Tap at Rustico.
4.1 Sampler at Malted Barley. Pours golden with a white head. Leaves trace lacing in the glass. Notes of white wine, wood, and Brett on the nose and tongue. Finished clean. As others have noted this is seriously crushable which kind of sucks considering how expensive it is.
4.2 Draught @ Roasthouse, Frederick, MD. Pours hazy pale straw with airy white head. Clear, vinous aroma with notes of yeast and malty touches. Dusty, rough and spicy onset, giving way to vinous notes and touches of hops. Lingering, dry aftertaste with notes of cloves and yeast. Very good.
4.1 750ml bottle. Clear gold pour with almost no head and lots of effervescent. Definitely sour aroma with some nice grape notes. Solid brett character, but the grapes have presence and the oak is just noticeable in the finish. Nice and refreshing.
4.0 Hazy golden pour with a frothy thick layer of white head and light sticky lacing .... aroma is really nice on this one, apple, grapes, nice vinous notes, some funk, oak and pear ..... taste is of dry oak, apple, grapes, very mellow and low on the acidity, some funk and pear ..... not very complex but crisp, clean and smooth .... you get nice vinous notes in the flavor white grapes ... the aroma on this is a home run ..... flavor is nice and balanced..... finish is crisp clean and has lingering grape, apple and pear ..... abv hidden well, dangerously sessionable
3.8 At a tasting, many thanks, batch 5, almost no head, very cloudy peach orange color, aroma of brett. sweat and apples, fruity flavor with some brett and minerals, extremely sour, almost piercing but quite mellow. Really enjoyable and extremely drinkable.
3.8 Bottle sample at a tasting at troubles' place. Thanks Tom L. Batch #5. Cloudy orange with no head. Oak, fruitiness, wine, funk, kinda juicy, dry, acidic, sour, some vinegar. Really good.
3.7 At Dror's place, pours yellow hazy with a small head, aroma of fruits, wood, vanilla, berries, flavor of vinegar, wine, wood, nice, medium bodied
4.2 Lekko zmętniona, żółta barwa. Bardzo owocowy i funky aromat. Dużo jabłek, winogron, agrest, minimalna octowość, ładna beczka. Kwaśne, wytrawne, owocowe, lekko ściągające, z nutami winogron i octu balsamicznego. Bardzo przyjemne.
4.0 From a liquor store in CT: pours hazy pale with a white head. Aroma is tree, musty grapes, funk, subdued hops. Taste is funky and a bit tart. Woody and quite dry with just a hint of sweetness. Quite nice.
4.2 Bottled. Clear golden body, almost no head but tiny bubbles like champagne. It’s a great aroma of cork, wood, grapes, wine berries, flowers. The taste is not overly tart, it’s like a dry champagne. Wonderfully complex, with red wine overtones, deep sweet notes of port, with a lovely touch of raspberry.
3.7 Refrigerated 12.7 oz. brown bottle poured into a tulip. Clear golden with very little white head. Aroma is slightly tart oak, medium body, low carbonation, and no lacing. Taste is tart white grape, oak, and white wine. Good, but expected to like this more.
4.0 Haven’t had a Captain Lawrence beer since (I think) 2007, what a pleasant surprise to say the least. Hazy orange/yellow color, moderate head, some lace/retention. Aroma is barnyard action, oak barrel, vanilla, tart, acidic, yeast, grape. Medium bodied, acidic, tart (not overly so - really nice balance of flavors) with of course brett with some barrel sweetness to round it out.
4.4 Lactic sour, oaky Woody, dry grape, white wine aroma and flavor. Not too sour, maybe 4 or 5 of 10 sour and virtually all lactic, but with a little earthy funk in the finish. Carbonation dies fast. Really complex and balanced and a solid sour. A notch below the greats I think with the low dying carbonation and the earthy funk in the finish ( but the earthy funk does compliment the dry oaky white wine and balances with the lactic sour, the earthy funk balance may be a benefit for some... And the more I drink the more I like the balance the slight funk provides). Bumping up a notch the more I have. So complex and so good, only negative now is the lack of carbonation.
4.1 Pours clear yellow white white head. Aroma; Funky, peach, hay, green grapes, green apples. Vinegar and barnyard. Flavours; Peach oak, earth, green apples, acidic with a touch touch of citrus and lime.
4.2 March 27, 2016. Bottle, vintage 2015, shared by linusb and Jokestereo, thanks! Light hazy yellow with a small white head. Aroma is fruity and funky with juicy grapes, apple skins, oak, notes of vinegar, touch of gooseberries. Taste is sour and fruity. Finish is soft acidic with white balsamico notes, juicy grapes, oak notes, earthy and a citrusy touch. Medium bodied, soft to average carbonation Very good, nice soft acidity.
3.5 A: Clear light yellow with a white head that goes away directly. N: Peach, Muscat grapes, funk T: Grapes, peach, funky barnyard O: Nice fruityness and hint of funk. Decent.
4.2 Bottle shared at tasting. Light yellow pour. Nice funky tart aroma. Taste follows. This is really well balanced between the tart and funk. Great stuff.
4.0 Bottle shared by Matt - thanks! Slightly hazy light yellow pour with minor head. Cheese and mild funk aroma. Juicy taste with funk and cheese. Intricate and easy drinking. Excellent!
