Captain Lawrence Golden Delicious

Captain Lawrence Golden Delicious

Batch 1 (2008) and Batch 2 (2010) of Captain Lawrence’s Extra Gold aged in apple brandy barrels. There’s nothing quite likes Mom’s apple pie…But I am willing to bet this beer is pretty darn close. An American Tripel, dry-hoped with Amarillo hops and aged in Apple Brandy barrels from one of this country’s oldest distilleries. The tropical aroma of the hops and the delicate apple aroma from the barrels are a perfect match

4.0 Pours a two finger off=white head that fades slowly leaving a good lace. Hazy straw color. Medium-strong carbonation and medium bodied. Apple brandy nose and flavor is nearly sour apple brandy and hints of caramel. High ABV, 11.0% is hidden. Bottled 6/26/2017, $3.90 for a 12oz bottle from Colonial Spirits Acton, Ma.
2.7 On tap at Draft Taproom. Aromas of sweet grain, honey, some chemical something, booze. Clear gold with a mostly lasting white head. A little sweet, boozy, meh. Full bodied.
3.7 ADT. Hazy golden orange with a creamy white head. Citrus, hay, funky yeast, apple juice, pepper with light barrel notes. Full bodied with a warming finish. Excellent.
3.7 Clear golden color. Medium sized, white head. Belgian yeasts, apples and oak in aroma. Same notes follow in taste. Sweet start , dry finish with wood bitterness. Noticeable notes of booze.
3.9 On tap at Blend Bar & Bisro in Hamilton, NJ. Medium gold color. Small creamy white head. Sweet malt nose hints at apple and brandy. Intense bittersweet apple flavor is mixed with big boozy notes. Quickly dries out and becomes astringent. Lots of alcohol warmth. Wow, this is quite bold. Nice lacing.
4.2 Cloudy golden colored pour, with a moderate white head leaving lots of lace. Yeasty apple aroma. Taste is hot with booze, followed by cinnamon and your favorite apple pie.. fresh baked of course. Sweet, but not overly so. Truly delicious beer. Great with vanilla ice cream in the afternoon shade.
4.5 Unique and amazing. Hot alcohol and fresh baked apple pie nose. Pours cloudy yellow with a frothy head. Lots of lace. Very sweet but hoppy finish keeps it in balance. Small bubbled spritzy carbonation crescendos into an impressive wash at the end. Don’t pass it by.
3.9 On tap @ Blinds Tiger, the ’13 model. No head on this one. The beer itself is a cloudy deeper orange colored one, and it smells superb. Lots of cellar and wood up front. Musky apples, some apricot freshness. Really nice stuff. Wow, this was nice. Really aged gracely this. It has a nice oily texture in the mouth and as expected somewhat gentle in the carbonation department. It’s almost like a dry nutty cherry or a really dry aged white wine. Earthy and a little apple juice sweet. No alcohol detected at all. Superb. 16.06.2017
3.0 Cloudy gold, covering lace. Full body, moderate flavor, little heat or carbonation, refreshing mouthfeel, short length. Mildly sweet, light bitter and crisp background. Monochromatic and weak flavor, some hop, could be apple or any other fruit character. Refreshing and harmless but disappointing.
3.6 Smells of apple and plenty of brandy like VSOP. Golden pour without much head. Some coriander. Smells better than it finishes. Like apples but finishes very boozy. Tap at Pizzeria Paradiso
3.6 2016/04/18 - Pours a hazy yellow honey colour with a foamy, off white head that slowly reduces and leaves moderate lacing. Aroma is apple, tart citrus, cereal grain, wood and floral hops. Taste is apple, oak, cereal, citrusy-floral hops and alcohol. Mouthfeel is medium and slightly chewy with smooth carbonation and a juicy, warming finish. Interesting beer with just enough apple.
3.8 Single bottle from Coastal in Branford CT. Poured into a stem glass. A cloudy light orange with a frothy off white head. Flavor is fruity and boozy - in a good way. Nice tart and sweet apple. Earthy-spice citrus hop profile perfectly balances the whole thing. Very nice take on this style.
3.6 12 oz. Bottle, thanks to Matt B! Clear is a hazy orange color, very thin white head. Aroma shows mild oak, hints of apples, notes of sugar. The barrel treatment adds a low apple Brandy to enhance the triple base. The body is pretty good, fuller side of medium, kind of a yeasty chewy texture. The booze is noticeable in the finish. A sipper without a doubt and the booze slows the sipping down to a crawl halfway through.
3.8 Poured from 12oz bottle 11/24/15 batch nice golden color with a effervescent white head. Aromas of apple hop wood and alcohol. Taste is apple silky mouth feel with a nice alcohol finish. Well done.
4.1 Pretty unique tripel on draft at Union Jacks. The beer poured a bright and clear light gold color with a small white head. The nose was full of apples, light hops, grapefruit and wood. The flavors followed suit, with plenty of apples to spare. There was also some nice flowery hops and yeast flavors for balance. Really good tripel!
2.8 Maybe my taste buds just aren’t ready for this one yet. Definitely very flavorful. I just found it way too sweet and tart. A little too "apply" if you will. I just.. didn’t like it that much.. Not much else to say about it
4.0 Bottle thnx to Rob. Pours unclear blonde, small white head. Smell is sharp, grains, some very mild booze. Taste is full, bit bitter in the beginning, directly overtaken by a full apple ( not chemical, really natural ) aspect, as well as some oak. Very decent MF and carbo. The sweetness is perfectly in balance with the boitterness and the apple flavor. Best apple beer to date
4.2 Hazy gold, with a half inch of whipped cream head. Aroma is appley, with citrusy, perfumey, floral hops. Taste is the same, with booze, and jolly rancher. This stuff is pretty terrific. $3/12oz
3.4 Refrigerated 12 oz. brown bottle, bottled on September 10, 2015, poured into a Trappist glass. Hazy dep golden with small white head. Aroma is some brandy, medium body, well carbonated, and good small-bubble lacing. Taste is brandy, nice oak, a little apple, hints of alcohol, and slightly dry finish.
1.9 On tap at blend. Lots of Wang. And Sour apple wang. Urine. Not good. Yuck.......
3.9 Pours deep clear gold into a tulip. Bright white creamy head with excellent retention recedes leaving sheet lacing. Caramel apple aromas. Thick with sweet hot caramel and apple upfront turning to warming oak before the hot, bitter earth finish.
3.5 Bottle from trade with mikeq215. Poured light haze orange with lots of carb thick white head. Aroma sweet apple yeasty malty oak. Med carb and bod. Tastes light sour bitter oaky apple.
3.5 Bottle. Pours bright, hazy yellow/gold with creamy white head. Aroma is apples, pears, booze, oak, faint vanilla, and faint cinnamon. Flavor is bready malts, pears, apples, brandy, Belgian yeast esters, faint hops, and a dry, oak finish. Medium body.
2.8 Way too sweet and boozy. The hoppiness would be interesting if you could actually taste it over all the apple brandy...
3.8 Bottle from a trade. Pours a cloudy pale orange to yellow with a large white head. light fruitiness with some pepper notes and some hay. Taste is full of fruit, mostly citrus. Not really picking out any barrel character, but the overall beer is extremely enjoyable, nice dry finish, but hindered by a touch of warming
3.8 2014 bottle thanks to vtafaro. Pours sparkling clear orange golden with Persistent white foam. Good lacing. Nose is mildly funky, hints of Brett, tamarind, moving to buttery oak and excellent barrel. Taste is barrel forward with white chocolate and hints of calvados, mid palate is not as sweet or boozy as expected. Finish is chalky, dry, neutral. Easier to drink than expected with more complexity in the aroma than expected.
4.2 One of the better beers I’ve had lately. Starts out as a beautiful belgian triple with notes of apple in the aroam, and then shifts gears about half way through, with the barrels starting to play some funky notes as it finishes. Thanks Max!
4.0 Bottled 09/17/2014. Thank you Bill/WassailWilly for sending. This was poured into a snifter. The appearance was a slightly hazy orange color with a moderately paced carbonation seen rising to feed a rapidly dissipating head. Light lacing speckled the glass in a messy sort of way. The smell started off with a soft yet slightly tart to sweet to light sour apple. Light spice interweaves itself in and out allowing a light breadiness to round it out. Light citrus and freshly cut grass roll in and out as it warms. The taste was semi-sweet and carried the sour back to lead to a crisp apple. A crisp and fresh subtle fresh grassy and sweet apple aftertaste starts and leads to subtle dry finish. On the palate, this one sat about a medium on the body with a decent sipping to sessionable quality. Weird, it feels like I want to pound this, but the ABV isn’t exactly suspect. I really don’t feel the 11%, still I get this and believe it to be good. Did the ABV fade? I dunno. Overall, this is a wonderful tripel with the apple notes streaming all about in the aroma and taste. I’d probably love this on a hot summer’s evening watching the sun go down across a lake.
3.8 This is the only East Coast beer left in my cellar and we’re drinking it in celebration of the Patriots victory in Super Bowl EXLICKS. Big, cloudy golden with a rocky, white head. It smells a little old but the apple is very apparent on the nose, surprisingly sweet. In the mouth it’s very smooth, lightly sweet and very boozy. This is a very mellow beer that goes straight to your head. However, even though Apple brandy is maybe my favorite spirit, this beer leaves a good amount to be desired when it comes to complexity.
3.0 2014 bottle. Pour is a light golden amber with a faint haze and a small amount of white head. Nose has a lot of the apple brandy, gets a bit boozy and woody, some lemon, and a hint of pineapple. Taste follows, overly brandy barrel, fairly acidic finish, medium body and moderate carb. Brett comes in fairly strong in back, pineapple, hay.
