Captain Lawrence Smoked Porter

Captain Lawrence Smoked Porter

A complex beer, with layers of flavors unfolding as this beer slides down your throat. Before the introduction of indirect-fired malt kilns, all beers had a smoky flavor. Today only a handful of brewers produce beer reminiscent of those of the past. We use imported German smoked malt to add depth and complexity to our Smoked Porter.
Sensory Profile: Aromas of smoked wood, licorice, and dark fruit. The flavor is a balance of smokiness, roasted malt, coffee, and malty sweetness.

Food Pairing: A natural match for any smoked or grilled meats. The smoky flavor of the meat and the unique smoky flavor of the beer blend beautifully to elevate the enjoyment of them both.

3.5 Sampled at Big Brew Beer Festival (Morristown). Poured a deep dark brown color with a small khaki colored head. Aroma of roasted and caramel malts, and smoke. Taste of smoke, roasted malts, chocolate, and a burnt char finish.
3.3 Bottle: pours dark black with a thin tan head, smokey aroma, taste is malty, smokey but not overwhelming. I just don’t enjoy smoke beers so hard to rate this high.
3.7 Bottle thanks to Homer, thanks man! Bottle shared split with my better half, pours a dark brown with a thin tan head, aroma has quite a bit of chocolate and coffee with a little bit of roast as well, the flavor has a chocolate and roasty front end with a good kick of smoke and ash in the finish, not too much of burnt pig meat, which is nice, pretty subtle but you can tell the smoke is there, nice.
3.7 Chocolate, mild roast coffee, burnt toast make up the flavor profile. Nose has cocoa, cappuccino, mild sweetness. Mouthfeel is a touch grainy and palate is very dry in finish
3.7 Bottled. Dark pour. Tannish head. Oaky smoke and roasted mslts and some bitter chocolate. Decent.
3.4 Bottle from UDBeernut. Pours black with tan head. Aroma is mix of smoke, roasted coffee, Taste is smoke, and mild roasted coffee. Aftertaste is slightly astringent and smokey. Hard to tell the difference. Not a hudge fan of smoked beers anymore, but this is not too bad.
3.8 On the First Day of Christmas 2013 the beer gods gave to me . . . one smoky porter. Pouts a dark brown color with a soapy off white foam head. Aroma of caramel, vanilla, some chocolate, and roast. Thins sweet caramel taste with vanilla notes and a dose of smoke. I like my brews roasty and not smoky so that knocks it down a pinch for me. But if you like the smoke variety, you will enjoy the complexity.
3.5 Tap at Blue Smoke, NYC, 24/11/13. Light black with a moderate tan head that clears to a pond and edge work. Nose is dark malts, smoke, dark fruit, earthy cocoa, treacle toffee. Taste comprises lightly smoked malts, brown sugars, earthy cocoa, touch of spice, dark fruit tang. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, dry roast with a lingering layer of smoke in the finish. Decent smoked affair, fairly subtle rausching thus retaining its shape a porter like status.
4.1 Bottle just says "Smoked Porter" not Pleasantville, but seems to be the same beer. Bottled: unk Nice dark brown with sanguine notes on the edges. Tan foam sheet is near complete. Smells of cocoa, light campfire, bread, and a touch of almond or peanut. Flavor is great, robust with a good dose of toasted malts, smoke, some bits of dark chocolate, some nutty character among the very well integrated and clean smoke flavor. The nose opens more smoke as it warms. Near full bodied with a soft carbonation that gives the beer a really good mouthfeel. Very well done beer, the smoke is assertive and nuanced enough to showcase the beer alongside the actual smokiness. Serving type: bottle 12-18-2012
3.9 Bottle from BottleSelect.com. Pours dark brown with ruby glints and a tan head. Smoky malt aroma. Near full bodied Flavor is chocolate and dark malt with moderate ever present smoke.
3.9 Bottle shared by bhensonb. Pours near black with a transient tan head and a smoky treacle aroma. There is a moderately smoky dark malt flavor with a dry finish.
3.9 Pours a deep black with a lasting brown head. Aroma of dark roasted caramel malt and smoked barbeque pit essence. Taste is sweet dark mild roasted caramel malt and a flavorful smoked barbeque notes with some mild bitterness and a lingering smoked flavor on the end. Palate is a medium body, smooth with moderate carbonation. This brew is quite good only wish it had a stronger smoked aroma. Overall a very well made, tasty and flavorful brew.
3.4 Bottle thanks to BroIPA. Pours deep brown, fluffy tan head. Aroma is light smoke, roast, dark fruit. Taste is heavy on the licorice, a bit too much so for my taste. Roasted, almost burned malt, coffee, burned sugar. That’s bit of theme...more burned than smoky here.
3.8 Location/Date:Bottle on August 27th, 2013. Appearance: Pours a black opaque with light white head.. Aroma: Aroma of smoked malt, faint roast.. Taste: Smokey, light roast, faint coffee, light sweet. Palate:Light body, short aftertaste. Summary: I haven’t had a porter this summer, but this was a nice treat. I enjoy smoke in beers, and there was plenty present here. Nice beer.
2.9 Poured from the bottle into a tulip. Pours coffee black with white head. Aroma of tobacco, earth and smoke. Taste is definitely smoky/ashy. Unfortunately that’s it. Ash taste continues to linger. Pretty harsh beer.
3.8 Smoke, roasted malts on the aroma also with hints of dark fruit. A solid black with a finger width, quickly disappearing, khakie head with no lacing. Beginning with smoke and moving to roasted malts in the middle. Dark fruit notes in the finish and more smoke, some biscuit, and bitterness present in the aftertaste. Medium-full body with medium carbonation. Overall, this is an excellant smoked porter! Robust flavors while being very drinkable.
3.6 29.06.2013, 0,5l bottle @ NY hotel room: Nice creamy longlasting head. Aroma is smoke, dark malts, salty licorice, grass, coffee, ham. Taste is slightly sweet, smoked dark malts, dark sugar, licorice, grass, sour coffee, hops. Medium bitterness, slightly dry mouthfeel, thin body. Not bad, but some aging would probably be good for this one.
3.6 Tap at brewery. Dark pour with minimal head. Bacon, bandaid, sweat, leather and coffee. Complex. Good carbonation with medium body and depth
4.3 very dark brown color, pretty much opaque unless you shine a bright light past it -- and if you do, there’s a slight red tint deep in the dark brown color. thick healthy off white, light tan head. a rich malty/smokey and roasty aroma, with some yeast esters coming through. very nice balance of smoke flavor with roast malt flavor, and some bitterness sneaking out. there’s a slight tang in the finish, leading to a pleasant, not-too-assertive smoke malt flavor mellowing in the aftertaste.
3.6 500ml bottle in a bulb. Pours near black with a lacy, beige head. Aroma of smoked malts, some roasted and light coffee notes, hints of fruits, and a little bitterness. Flavor the same with the smoked malts dominating all else. Average texture. A decent beer.
3.2 pours brown with a huge tan head...nice lacing and retention. aroma is lightly smoked. flavor has tootsie roll and smoky band aid...meh. mouthfeel is light and the finish is boring smokiness. i hoped for more from this.
3.8 Tap at Blue Smoke at JFK. Dark pour with deep reddish highlights. Big foamy head. Smokey and chocolate. Delicious.
3.7 (bottle - 500 ml) Dark brown pour with a puffy tan head. Big smokey aroma mixed with chocolate and some nutty notes. Flavor has a lot of smoke at the start with some dark fruits and tobacco mixed in. Smokey finish with a very light hint of dark fruits under all the smoke.
3.5 Moderate dark malt aroma with a light amount of smoke. It don’t have that over powering smoke flavor. Black color with a large tan head. Light chalky malt flavor in the beginning that fades in the end. Light bitter smoke in the finish.
4.1 Aroma is smoked/nutty malts and a strong hint of tobacco. The flavor is smoked malts, dark fruit, a hint of tobacco and long and acidic/sourish finish.
3.7 500 ml bottle courtesy of BlackIPA. Thanks again, Shawn. Probably the bottle he sent I was most excited for. Pours a darker blackish brown hue, good deep dark middle with nice glowing ruby edges and bottom. A cakey brownish head atop stays firm and larger, sticks around and laces well. Pretty beer. Aromas offer bits of cocoa, pretzels, and biscuits. Some dry toastiness, mellow yet growing smokey malts, campfire and roasted malts. Some toasty biscuits, a gentle carmelization but not really sweet. Warmth brings a bit more decent campfire and cherrywood smoke. Initial is medium bodied, a firm wash over the palate. The front is a bit hoppy, dry, roasty. Some soda bread and dry elements. Not heavy, some good carbonation, a touch of cocoa presses on. Some toastiness, biscuits, mellow meaty and faint peaty smoke as we move on. Cocoa, some toffee, not sweet, a creamy body in the middle a bit besides that smokey life. Backend is more cocoa, faint red fruit, more dryness, a bit roasty, firm toast. Mellow campfire, almost more of an earthy, ashy smoke. Faint cherrywood sweeter smoke. Still a nice body without being overbearing, the finish shows. More cocoa, some toastiness, pretzels and biscuit. Almost a milk chocolate feel at times, especially as we move back. The smoke element is decent, more a compliment instead of the focus. As a Smokehead, I’d prefer a firmer element in this one. As it warms, it does become a bit more prominent in the backend and finish and lingers which wins a point from me. But overall it’s a well constructed, approached beer with some good flavors and quite drinkable in my opinion. Nice.
3.8 5/13/13. Weird shaped not small not big bottle from my boi BlackIPA! Deep brown almost black pour with a small tan head. Light but definite smoke on the aroma, salty ham and barbecue, with a touch of roasted malts. Sweet malty flavor, caramel, coffee, etc., with more of that definite smoked malt, but far from overwhelming... well balanced and tasty. Thanks, bro!
4.0 Pint bottle. Pours a translucent brown with a beige head of foam. Aroma is smoked meat and roasted malt. Sweet and smoky. Really nice.
3.8 Pours dark brown, almost black with a tan head. Smells like the smoked venison sausage I had yesterday. Taste is like a slight smokey coffee and vanilla notes. Thin on the body for this porter and the carbonation remains real low, which I wish there was more to help with the mouth feel. Overall a decent smoked brew.
3.4 500 ml thanks to UDBeernut. Porter and smokey. Smoke not overbearing, but for me, I’m just not a smoked beer person. Bit of roast underneath as well. I get why smoked beer people would like this.
