Captain Lawrence Xtra Gold

Captain Lawrence Xtra Gold

This beer is an American adaptation to the classic Belgian style of beer known as a Tripel. Historically Tripels were brewed to have a very light golden color, a moderate hop presence, and be around 9% alcohol. But we are not in Belgium, so I decided to crank up the hops, dry hop the beer with American Amarillo hops, and brew it to 10% ABV. This is our American Tripel, enjoy.

Sensory Profile:

Enjoy in a goblet or wine glass.

Tropical fruit and honey are the two biggest aromas coming from this lively brew. While the hop bitterness is not as powerful as an IPA, the hop flavor melds nicely with the fruity flavors created by the imported Belgian yeast strain used.

Food Pairing: This beer goes great with roasted vegetables, fish and rotisserie chicken. And it can be used as a aperitif before dinner with shrimp cocktail.

3.8 Bottle from beernut a long time ago. Pours golden with little white head. Aroma of mild hops. Some sweetness. Belgium yeast. Taste is light, fruity, a bit spicey. Tasty beer.
3.9 On tap at the Blue Monkey. Aroma is light grass, a little banana, citrus, and fresh rolls. Pours golden with a nice fluffy head and a wispy film after. Taste is great citrus, grass, slight wheat, banana, pineapple, and a nice bready finish. Drank two in a row and only then discovered the 10%. Delicious triple.
3.2 On-tap at Joe Canals West Deptford. Appearance: Slightly hazy golden hue with a short white head, poor retention. It settles in a slightly bubbly edge. Aroma: Some sulfur, some booze, some lemon and orange, and hints of Belgian yeast. Taste: Mildly sweet malty intro that builds, slight yeasty spice by the mid-taste with a hint of oranges. The finish shows some booze. Not my favorite triple. Palate: Full-bodied and moderately carbonated. Overall: There’s something about the yeast profile that throws me off. I don’t dislike it, but I’d take other tripels over it.
3.5 Sampled at Big Brew Beer Festival (Morristown). Pours a hazy straw color with a big foamy white head. Aroma of citrus, sweet grain, and a hint of plastic. Taste of sweet grain, grass, bitter grapefruit, and a hint of plastic in the aftertaste. Really tasty minus the plastic notes.
3.9 Pours a light golden color with a thin head leaving light lacing. Aromas of grass with fruit notes. Hops is up front and strong, with the Belgian yeasts apparent. Very good beer.
3.7 Poured from bottle. Aroma is grassy and fruity. Taste is almost like smoking weed. Distinct. Fruity at end. A bit bitter but easy to drink.
3.6 Bottled: unk EXPLOSIVE!!!! Cracked the crown on this and nearly half the bottle came flooding out all over the counter. Brutally either overcarbonated or infected. Anyway, after about five minutes of letting this one air out, I poured a half glass - lovely golden with a fine white foam atop. Slightly herbal hops, some nice sourish tones (nearly tart apple with hint of lime). Tastes like a tripel with refined tones of yeast and a really pleasant lees creaminess. medium bodied with lighter carb now. Nice beer. Wish it wasn’t a brutal gusher. Serving type: bottle 04-24-2012
3.7 Deep gold - vigorous head (aged bottle pour). Aroma is sweet and sour, yeasty, bready, light fruits - interesting, but good as I got into it. Flavor is vinous, white-wine like, light tropical fruit, yeast, esters, somewhat sour. Palate is effervescent and lively. Took me a bit to warm up to this one, but I would say it was a good pour overall!
3.4 Bottled. Golden pour with white head. Yeast floral and some lemon zest. Mild hop finish. Decent
3.8 Held this bottle for awhile and then shared with deadCATAtlanta while cleaning my new (to me) beer fridge. Pours a lovely hazy gold with ample white head. Scent is delicious mix of spice and sugar. Flavors are sweet and earthy. Body is medium and lively. Good beer. Glad I had the opportunity to try. Bottle - Somewhere in NYC
3.8 0.75l bottle from Cracked Kettle. This was actually one of the first beers I bought from Cracked Kettle, so have been saving this for a while. It pours a lovely looking glowing cloudy honey-golden body with a big heavy lacing off-white head. Smells a little bit of cellar and Belgian yeast. It’s also somewhat zesty on the nose, and there are clear notes of oxidation. It has a average carbonation level and a kinda gliding and oily mouthfeel. In the taste I get lots of really ripe fruits, some yeasty tones, canned pears and light candy sugar. The twist here is that has a slight acidity in between the other flavors. Almost like sour raspberries mixed with blue plums in a way. Makes it more interesting, but I have to admit that it’s not a masterpiece of a tripel this, but that being said, it kinda grows on you after a while in the glass. Some subtle traces of alcohol, and I have to say subtle because the fact that it’s a 10 percent to ABV beer is hard to notice. It’s leaving the mouth in a state that I would describe as drying and longing for more - and that’s undoubtedly a good thing! 10.04.2013
2.8 Bottle @ Greg’s dump, courtesy of BlackIPA. Thanks! Pours a hazy yellow orange appearance with a white head. Kind of bready, oxidized, lightly spicy hoppy, a touch citrusy, pale malty aroma. Pretty strong. Cardboard, paper, chewy malty, light toast, mild banana, lemon, a touch spicy flavor. Probably too old and though high boost is offered, I don’t even
3.7 Deep golden color, nice frothy chalk white head. The nose is fairly malty with bready notes and pears. Full bodied, very smooth and alcohol is well hidden. Although well made, the beer doesn’t show spectacular depth, but is ok. Decent bready finish.
3.9 750 ml bottle thanks to blklab2007. Pours hazy golden orange color with a large, white head that fades slowly and never completely goes away. Great lacing too, love the appearance. Aroma is very floral and spicy with some citrus, yeast, honey, pineapple, and clove. Taste is very spicy at first with lots of coriander, clove, yeast, and black pepper. Finishes rather fruity and floral. Citrus fruit and pineapple mostly. Not much sweetness or bitterness really. Mouthfeel is nice. Lots of carbonation but remains very soft. A little oiliness which I enjoy. This is more complex than most tripels, probably due to the dry hopping. Yum.
4.3 Big orange flavor right up front. Hints of grapefruit right behind that. On tap is was more clean. The bottle has wonderful notes produced by the yeast. This is a Belgian IPA and a damn fine one. The hops are there throughout and wonderful.
3.4 golden orange, 1 finger fluffy head loads of coriander and other spices. I get rose petals and oak. taste is sweet and spiciness. Quite bitter
3.5 22oz bottle pours a clear gold with a large white head. a light fruit aroma. fruit hop taste with a bready wheat finish. very enjoyable beer
4.0 Bottle. Pours gold with a huge white head and some floaties. Nose is northwest style hops, Belgian style yeast and cereal grain. Taste is similar with a huge burst of citrus. Palate is fine but a little thin. This is unique and well put together.
3.8 Glowing golden-orange body, medium sized white head, soapy lacing. Stone fruits, light yeast, some crackery grain, a touch of glazed donut. Medium bodied with appropriate carbonation, just a bit of sweetness and a lingering finish.
3.8 Bottle split two ways. Pours clear golde with a white head that leaves a thick lacing coat. Nose of citrus and crackers. Taste follows up with some light clove. Body is full.
3.5 Pours clear orange with good head and lacing. A little overrated among triples, but well put together. Florals in initial aroma with some booze. Can’t detect a whole lot more going on here other than that. Finishes a little sour. 750 ml bottle.
3.9 Nice golden color; Medium slightly creamy body; Aroma of yeast, floral hops, some honey, & citrus; Flavor of slight sweet malt, yeast, floral hops, citrus/fruit, some caramel, and spice; Dry finish; Nicely balanced; Well done.
3.5 75 cl bottle. Originally rated on 20110218. Pours golden color with a small head. Aroma of citrus fruits, yeast, some hops, spices and toffee. Flavor of toffee, citrus fruits, yeast and hay.
4.2 Firkin at Real Ale. I’ve had this dozens of times out of bottle but I’ve never had it so fresh and hoppy. Nose of pineapple, honey, sweet hay. So smooth for 10%. Really good.

3.0 Golden colour, off-white head. Fruity aroma, somewhat sweet, light sickly, acetone, nail polish remover, malts, some tropical fruits. Sweet flavour, light sickly, malts and honey. Quite low carbonation, sickly, sweet finish. Not my favourite. (From 75cL bottle @ ZZT VI. Courtesy of DutchDrebus. Thanks for sharing, Dré!)
3.5 Bottle @ Kiss The Kitchen Floor or better known as ZZT VI (2013): kindly shared by DutchDrebus: Medium sized white head which changes quick into a lacing on top of a hazy yellow colored beer. Aromas of hops, citrus, honey, soap, apples and a hint of peach. Flavours of tea, herbs, hops, soap, apples, hint of something light smokey, light bitter and some malts. Aftertaste is malts with apples, light bitter and light floral. Low to medium carbo, soft light dry mouthfeel, medium body and a light creamy texture. It’s nice hoppy, it’s ok, but not more than that.
1.8 serious gusher - foam is still oozing out of the bottle 20 minutes after i poured the first glass. hazy gold with a big foamy white head. body is medium, which is very unusual for a beer with this level of wild yeast presence, as somehow some of the long-chain sugars must have survived. carbonation is obviously quite high. aroma: orval yeast character (slightly sour with some mild brett notes), some dry grassy notes from probable wild yeast, sweet rich pale malts, a sharp saison-like citrus note, and tropical hop character. taste: pleasant malty sweetness is buried by rather unpleasant wild yeast and brett character (rubber, bandaid, dank moldy basement, gym socks). the hops come through pretty clear with what seems would be a nice clean bitterness and citrusy tropical notes if not overshadowed by funk. i’m not going to finish more than a couple ounces of this, which sucks because it’s a big bottle and wasn’t cheap, and i brought this home from a recent trip up north and was really looking forward to enjoying it.
3.8 Sampled from bottle @ ZZT VI. Hazy yellow to light orange color, small off-white head. Smell malts, fruitiness of orangepeel. Taste malts, orangepeel, fruitiness, some alcohol and lightly sweet. Nice! Medium to full body, medi carbonation.
3.1 Bottle @ ZZT VI thx to me. Golden colour, small head. Smells malts, hops, sweet, fresh. Tastes herbs, malts, sweet, fresh. Don’t really like it. Medium body, heavy carbo.
