2.116.9 oz bottle -
Another newer stocked stout found at BevMo, and it probably should have stayed on the shelf. I guess for $3.00 it’s not a total loss. But it’s got some serious flaws, as a stout should never have green apple in the flavor and this has tons of it. Aroma is really light roasted coffee/toffee and an herbal note. Flavor is lightly roasted coffee and green apple. Yuck.
3.2Bottle. Size: 1 pint, 9.4oz. Dark brown pour with a foamy tan head. Aroma is sweet sugary cookie and cocoa. Flavor at first was too sweet and a little salty, but as the beer warmed the flavor mellowed out and some cocoa and roasted malt flavor came out. The body is light and the level of carbonation is low.
3.3Bottle. Clear black/brown with very thin head. Aroma of roasted malt, light brown sugar, and a hint of coffee. Light/medium body, medium sweetness, some burnt grain astringency, and a dry bitter grain finish.
4.0i really can’t convey my shock at this beer. it is a stout, not a thin black concoction with too much roast or an overhopped monstrosity. it is a real honest to whatever gods you believe in stout. it is 5.7% it is drinkable, it gives a light roast flavor with a lingering milky very mild cocoa flavor. hop presence is there for balance, but above all, this is drinkable. i could sip on a few of these. mild light coffee nose with hints of chocolate. i am very happy to have this easily available to me.
4.0Thick malty aroma.Dark black colour with good head. Thick malty chocolate flavor with big aftertaste. Thick, full bodied with nice warmth and low carbonation.
3.7Dark pour with small brown head. Nutty nose with some roast. Descent roasted flavor with clean finish.
3.4(375ml bottle) Pours a dark brown body with a small beige head. Aroma of roasted malt, burnt grain, and chocolate. Flavor of roasted malt, light smoke, burnt grain, some cocoa, and stale graham crackers.
3.2Dark brown pour. Fast dissipating tan head. Aroma roasts soil. Tastes peanut butter semisweet roasts coffee. Acidic spritzy palate.
3.2Bottle. pouts a nice cola colour
Aroma. Smells of Milk chocolate and coffee.
Taste. Mainly coffee with a sour bitterness throughout.
Overall. not too special but at the price point it’s worth a try.
2.7Poured an opaque black colour with a very slight mahogany edge tint that produced a three-finger tan coloured frothy head that diminished quickly but laced well in rings. Aroma with lots of dark chocolate, some roasted grain possibly as well as some fruits. Taste of sweetness but also with a tart bitterness and possibly some dark fruits. Aroma not replicated in taste. Moderate body, lighter that I was expecting. Although it has a slightly bitter finish it is easy to drink.
4.0750 ml bottle. Dark pour with little head. This one surprised me a bit. Aroma is of sweet milk chocolate. A lot of chocolate, malty flavor with a strong, sweet coffee finish. This was less than $4 and I am very impressed with the beer/price combo. Good stuff.
3.41 pint bottle. Pours a dark brown with large tan/light brown head. Aroma of coffee and roasted sweet malts. Flavor is sweet, malty and roasty, with hints of chocolate and coffee. A bit thin, but way better than I expected at the price point.
3.3750ml bottle with a screw top, thanks to caterwaul. Sticker says $4.29. Wow..! Sticker says best before 14/mar... 2015??? How is this possible? They must give this beer, at least, a 2 year shelf life. Pretty generous. Why even print that? How long do these classically sit for? Near pitch black color. Thin light brown head. Dots, little bits of lace. Moderate dark chocolate, roast, some ashiness. Kind of sweet, metallic taste. Taste’s a little big and heavy for just 5.7%... Not sure if that’s a good or bad thing. Dark fruity taste. Moderate sweet. Light tart. Probably a little older. But it’s held up incredibly well for a what I think must be a 1-2 yr old beer. A lot better and more flavorful than expected.
2.5From a bottle. The pour is a brown frothy head with black appearence. There’s a nutty medium body texture with an ok taste.
2.4Pours cola with reddish tinges & decent head. Smells of instant coffee, Vegemite, chocolate, Jif kitchen cleaner. Taste is a bit better but has a metallic taste & that Jif aftertaste (or what I imagine it would taste like). Otherwise, reasonably sweet & standard stout taste. Fairly thin mouthfeel and not creamy like most good stouts. Drinkable but not great.
2.2Non-descript, minimally roasted malts. Black with no head. Bland, boring, forgettable.
2.4~This review was made some time ago via another application, and thus the specific details (beyond numerical scores) are no longer available~
3.4Pours black as expected, with thin beige foamy head. Aroma is burnt and chocolaty. Taste is dark roasted malt and chocolate. Lingering bitterness on the palate. Nice!
2.8This beer comes relatively well rated considering its very humble, old fashioned background. There are pleasing elements of chocolate and hops but in a beer club stout night it failed to register much approval due to a relatively watery consistency and overall lack of interest factor.
3.3750 ml bottle to pint (shared with the Mrs.). Looks good; a dark and fairly opaque cola with thin beige. Head that dissipates into lacing fairly quickly. Smells of dark malt and roast with a touch of chocolate and oxidization. Tastes like it smells, only more robust, and with a touch of pleasant sourness. Average on the palate. Not too shabby, especially for the price.
NOTE: Drink cold! I enjoyed it less as it warmed, and split the difference in my quantitative review.
3.2375ml bottle. Black brown colour, thick foamy tan head leaving some lacing and aroma of roasted malt, dark fruits, slightly sour. Taste is sweetish, roast malt, coffee, chocolate, with alittle bitterness. Smooth mouthfeel, light to medium bodied, medium carbonation, some residual sweetness. Quite OK.
2.7Bottle. Pours a near black color with a moderate tan head on it. Nose is a little sour, almost, and a little bit roasting to it. Taste has just a hint of sourness to it with the roasting coming through a little later. This is probably my least favorite of the stout family, but it’s still drinkable.
3.2July 2012. Bottle. Roasted malt and chocolate aromas. Dark brown, almost black with a tan head. Flavors of chocolate, malt, coffee with a malty and acidic finish.
3.7Poured from a 750ml bottle. Better than I expected with a twist off cap. Chocolate, coffee/mocha, caramel, fruity, dry finish. A solid stout experience.
2.9Pours dark brown and settles near black with hints of ruby. Half finger of light brown head that turns to film quickly. Some streaky lacing.
Nose is chocolate, astringent coffee, roast and some dark fruits. Chocolate and coffee really stand out well for what this is.
Taste is roast, over extracted coffee, and chocolate. No hop bitterness but a lot of coffee notes and some acid from the coffee. Quite bold for the ABV level.
Thins out a lot on the mouth but the astringent coffee remains and it a deterrent. Light body and feel for the amount of coffee and chocolate taste. Gets watery quickly. Decent in a pinch.
3.4Bottle is a month pat it's Best By Date.
Aroma is a balanced blend of chocolate and roast with a bit of a dark fruit ester like plums or prunes. There is a bit of an oxidized and stale character but it isn't too bad.
Pours a dark brown with a thin, dark tan head that has fairly good retention. Moderate lacing and small legs.
Flavor is similar to aroma with the dark malts being balanced between chocolate and roast with sweet chocolate being more prevalent upfront. There is a bit of dark fruit with some cherry, plum and berry. Once the fruit and chocolate fades you are left with a fairly astringent, burnt coffee flavor. Low bitterness and no hop flavor. Malt character is a bit stale and oxidized but really not bad.
Mouthfeel is medium bodied with medium low carbonation. Astringency is moderate and there is medium low alcohol warmth.
Overall this beer is better than expected and it has held up better than I would have expected. That being said, the astringency is a bit on the strong side and the eaters are as well. It's a fairly sweet stout as well.
3.1Pours totally black with a brown head. Aroma is malt, chocolate, plenty of roasty notes and some soy sauce. Taste is light to medium bitter leading to a moderate bitter and quite roasty finish. Not bad.
1.5Not good at all. Pours a nice black with a brown head, but that is the only high mark. Smell is gross, like sweet rubbing alcohol. Slightly chocolate. Taste is similar, like very bitter medicine. I feel like we might have gotten a bad bottle, because none of the other reviews say anything like this, but it was unmistakable rubbing alcohol. Had in the bottle, but poured out the rest. Not often that we have had to do that.
2.9Pours black as a politician’s heart; froths up a good two-finger head. Dissipates eventually leaving some not bad lacing.
There isn’t much aroma other than a light hint of malt.
Same in the mouth, but with a bit of chocolate and a good hit of coffee.
Taste is a fairly pleasant bitterness with a sweet toasted malt undertone.
Mouthfeel is a little thin. Lively carbonation.
It’s a decent stout. Nothing remarkable, but for $3.50, I’m not complaining.
3.6Considering some of the outher Australian stouts that taste like a muddy puddle after a flood, this was excellent stuff. Nice chocolate nose, with a bit of a leathery touch, but not strong. Flavours of roast malts, chocolates, quite bitter and salty. Dry finish, with a grand finale explosion of bitterness, which is quite pleasant. Hard to find this stout, even in Australia.
