Cascade Drie Zwarte Pieten Sang Noir

Cascade Drie Zwarte Pieten Sang Noir

Barrel Aged Double Flanders Red Ale [Sour Ale].
Translation: Three Black Peters Black Blood. This is a reference to the blending team of Ron Gansberg and Curtis Bain, brewers at Cascade brewing and Preston Weesner, beer steward for the fest. The Three Black Peters take their name from Netherlands folklore. "Black Pete" was St. Nicholas’ helper and would scold the children who had been naughty and give a present to the ones that had been nice. Made exclusively for the festival, "Sang Noir" is a NW take on a traditional Flanders-style Sour Red Ale. Bigger than a traditional Red this Double Red is a blend of several barrel aged beers. Portions of the beer were aged in Pinot Noir and Whiskey barrels. Fresh Bing Blood Cherries were added to a portion and refermented in the barrel for three months before being added to the blend, giving it a big full bodied tart cherry red flavor with distinct barrel notes. This is a once in a lifetime beer from one of the most innovative breweries in the Northwest.

Sang Noir Label: This NW style sour ale is a blend of red ales that were aged in oak and Bourbon barrels for 12 months before aging on fresh Bing and sour pie cherries for and additional six months.

4.2 Pours a nice mahogany from a bottle. Red wine and balsamic vinegars, leather, wood aroma. Flavor has a nice cherry finish as well. Very well balanced, tart. Very good beer.
3.8 750ml bottle. Dark reddish brown colour. Off-white head. Notes of raspberry, green apple rubber, earth. Bracing sourness. Good stuff.
3.4 Mørk rødsvart farge med tynn stripe skum. Syrlig i smak. Kirsebær, kirsebærstein, sødme. Fizzy i munnfølelse. Ølfestival. Oslo.
4.1 Slightly hazy, deep copper body with a very long-lived, tan head that sticks to my glass. Sweet, sour and strong aroma of tart red berries, barnyard, red wine, wood, and caramel. Strong flavour that follows the aroma, with additional cherry pits and marzipan. Moderate sweet taste that is perfectly backed up by a moderate and long-lasting acidity. Medium body, smooth texture, moderate carbonation. A wonderful beer, I will definitely be hunting down a bottle of this masterpiece. [Sample from bottle (I think) @ Håndverksølfestivalen, Oslo]
3.8 0,2 litre taster at Håndverksøl festival. Dark brown with light brown head. Malts, hops and grapes.
4.4 Draft at Beer Temple Amsterdam. Blackish dark brown with two finger tan head that dissipated quickly. Aroma: Tart, sour cherries, balsamico vinegar, vinous, blackberries, dried fruits, farmyard, blue cheese, oak, vanilla, strawberries, caramel. Taste: Oak, tart, very sour cherries, strawberries, vanilla, milk chocolate, blackberries, dried fruit, brown sugar, Balsamico vinegar, vinous tannine, barnyard, plums, dates. Medium body with a long sour cherry bittersweet finish. Christ on a bicycle...what an amazing brew this is in the Flamish brown/red ale tradition...absolute stunner of a beer!
4.2 Bottle at Cafe Sara, february 15th 2017. Dark red body with a minimal head. Aroma of tart, sour cherries, brett, strawberries. Taste is sour with lots of cherries, mild vanilla and spice notes. Tasty and crisp with a funky sour end. Very nice!
3.7 Murky, deep red pour with a very thin head, mostly on the edges of the glass. Fruity aroma, some wood as well. Very tart taste, loads of cherries though. For a 2015 bottle (drank in 2018), there is still loads of fruit. Fair amount of carbonation. Finishes dry with notes of red wine, but it is very subtle. Lingering fruit, despite the dry finish. Really complex. Very good stuff.
4.2 On tap at Beer Temple. Pours a clear but very dark red, almost black, red in light, with a slight head with great retention though. Aroma is a classic sour red, with cherry and distinct bourbon notes. Lovely. Full bodied and rich on the palate. Flavours are rich and complex, the basis is a beer of intense acidity but with nicely sweet notes. The cherries come out very nicely in flavour, as does the bourbon, which adds a lot to this beer. Finish is sweet and bourbony with quite some vanilla. Amazing sour!
Notevole e infinita.
4.2 750mL bottle from Whole Foods (Charlottesville, VA). Aromas of cherry, red wine, vanilla, light Bourbon. Dark tawny port color with a mostly fading beige head. Dry, lightly fruity, balsamic, vanilla, oaky, dark berry. Full bodied, tart, tangy, highly acidic.
3.5 Draft at Oak St. Drafthouse. Deep reddish brown. Sour aroma with a hint of bourbon. Tart and fruity with dry sour finish.
3.4 Tart aroma. Red in color with light head. Taste is tart with light cherry notes.
3.6 Tap at BLAH. Pours dark brown/red. Aroma and flavor are huge blackberry, lactic acid, faint balsamic, faint strawberries, faint oak, and dry, pale malt base. Light/medium body.
3.6 Draft at BLAH. Pours murky red/nut brown with a bubbly beige head. Tastes like tart lemon, berry, red wine, woody malt, and vinegar. Light body and low/medium carbonation. Smells like berry, red wine, booze, and vinegar.
3.8 [9621-20170923] Bottle. Fruity red toasted barrel berry aroma. Hazy, dark red body with a medium-lasting foamy off-white head. Soured fruity berries and toasted barrel fruit flavour. Medium-full body is sour. Good. (7/3/9/4/15) 3.8 (Zwanze Day 2017 @ Birreria Volo, Toronto, ON)
3.9 2017-09-23. Red tinged dark brown body, modest head. Aroma has big fruity character, there is a heaviness to it that I think stems from the combination of bourbon and dark fruit, but it's not necessarily a distinctly/prominent bourbon character. 7++ Flavour is similar, weighty dark fruit, cherry, tart acidity around the edges grows and linger in the finish. Average bodied palate, modest carbonation. 3+ Solid, but more of a sipper than the more quaffable Noyaux that preceded it. 7/4/7-8/3-4/17 2015 Bottle sample. Zwanze Day at Volo, Toronto.
3.1 750ml bottle. Slightly cloudy, brown-ish crimson colour with small, frothy, fading, beige head. Bourbon aroma, hints of vanilla, underlying fruity notes of morello and red berries. Taste is agressively sour, lactic, notes of vinegar, hints of morello. Nothing I need a second time, least of all considering the brewery's overprize politics.
3.7 Tap @ Beer Temple, Amsterdam, 14/09/17. Quite sour, some balsamico, red berries, vanilla and wood fairly strong.
3.5 Draft at beertemple. Black pour. Aroma of tart red fruit, vanilla, oak and lacto. Taste has sour red fruit, oak, tart, lacto acid, red grapes and a sour finish. Nice, but too rough.
4.9 Bottle at Wvrst. Big aroma of sour cherry, oak, hints of basalmic vinegar. I could smell this from several feet away while it was being poured. Warm dark brown with reddish tones, very little head. Tastes of tart sour cherries, oak, some vinegar notes. Awesome.
4.2 Pours a clear crinsom or ruby colour with a beige lightly frothy head. The aroma has vinous notes from the winebarrel. Christmas spices, lots of vanilled oak and sour cherries. So many things going on. Tannic vinegary notes as well. Taste is rich with a big sour kick to counter the sweeter fruity notes. Long tannic aftertaste. Like it lots.
3.8 750ml corked bottle. 2015 vintage. (9.9% ABV) Pours an unclear dark ruby with lots of sediment floating around and a small, fizzy, short lived, tan head that fully dissipates. Tart aroma of cherry, red wine, balsamic vinegar, oak and a hint of bourbon. Sweet flavour of cherry, red grape, red wine, balsamic vinegar and oak with a dry, sour, acidic, alcohol finish. Medium body with an oily texture and average carbonation. A decent sour red, plenty of pucker power. The bourbon was a little too subtle IMO.
4.5 750 ml bottle into tulip glass; 2015 vintage bottling, 9.9%. Pours fairly crystal clear dark ruby red/light brown color with a 1-2 finger fairly dense and fluffy light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of huge sweet/sour/tangy cherries, raisin, plum, raspberry, blackberry, currant, red grape, lemon, lime, green apple, almond, vanilla, bourbon, toasted oak, brown sugar, caramel, and bread; with light notes of leathery funk, red wine vinegar, pepper, and yeast/oak earthiness. Incredible aromas with amazing balance and complexity of fruity/acidic yeast, cherries, wine/bourbon barrels, and dark/bready malt notes; with big strength. Taste of huge sweet/sour/tangy cherries, raisin, plum, raspberry, blackberry, currant, red grape, lemon, lime, green apple, almond, vanilla, bourbon, toasted oak, brown sugar, caramel, and bread; with light notes of leathery funk, red wine vinegar, pepper, and yeast/oak earthiness. Light-moderate fruity/lactic tart/sourness; light yeast/oak spiciness and fruit tang on the finish. Lingering notes of sweet/sour cherries, raisin, plum, raspberry, blackberry, currant, red grape, lemon, lime, green apple, almond, vanilla, bourbon, toasted oak, brown sugar, caramel, bread, light funk/vinegar, and yeast/oak earthiness on the finish for a while. Incredible complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/acidic yeast, cherries, wine/bourbon barrels, and dark/bready malt flavors; with an awesome malt/tart/sourness balance, and minimal puckering flavors after the finish. Light-moderate dryness from tart/sourness and yeast/oak spiciness, increasing through the glass. Medium carbonation and medium-full body; with a very smooth, moderately creamy/silky/acidic, and lightly tangy/tannic balanced mouthfeel that is amazing. Minimal warming alcohol for 9.9%. Overall this is an insane fruited Flanders red ale style! All around incredible complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/acidic yeast, cherries, wine/bourbon barrels, and dark/bready malt flavors; very smooth and dangerously easy to drink with the balanced lactic/tannic/drying finish. Perfectly balanced complexity from all flavors. A highly amazing offering, and world class fruited sour ale. One of the best I’ve ever had.
4.1 Thanks Danny! Super tart and boozy sour red. A beer drinkers beer - sour with high abv. Anyways, it was nicely balanced for extreme tastes. Great stuff!
3.6 Tart raspberry aroma with sudsy off white head. Puckeringly tart raspberry like woody aroma. Notes: 2015 vintage, on tap at he brewery, Portland visit May 17
3.7 Pours opaque chocolate brown with a serviceable buff head. Aroma offers a sharp note of tart fruit plus a little toasted malt. Flavor features tart, tart fruit - stone fruit and pomme - and just a hint of malt. Mouthfeel delivers firm body and peppy fizz. Black blood indeed.
4.1 Aromat intensywny, owocowy, nuty czerwonych, przejrzałych czereśni, nuty śliwek z niuansami wanilii w tle. W smaku wysoka kwaśność, czereśnie, śliwki, w tle niuanse karmelowe i czerwonego wina. Posmak wanilii i cierpkość drewna. Bardzo złożone.
3.8 750 ml bottle from Tavour. Nose is red wine, light vanilla, and bourbon. Clear rusty red with a medium lightly lacing beige head. Flavor is moderately tart with a hint of bourbon and vanilla.
4.2 Murky dark amber color with beige head. Aroma has balsamic vinegar, plums, tart fruits, some caramel malt in the background. Taste is sour up-front, acetic and astringent, some wood notes and the wine also comes through. Medium body and carbonation, quite dry and acidic. A great flanders style ale with complex flavors.
