Cascade Elderberry

Cascade Elderberry

This live barrel of NW style sour red ale was initially aged for six months in French oak wine barrels, then additionally aged on elderberries. Sharp wine, dark raisins, red grapes and cereal notes greet you on the nose. Tart dark fruit and grapes on the palate lead to a sparkling crisp dry finish with hints of fresh elderberries and grape skins.

3.6 [2015] 750ml bottle. Reddish brown with a foamy beige head. Flavors are toasted cereals, berries, lemon, oak and spices. Aggressive lactic acidity. Medium body, moderate carbonation, smooth texture.
4.0 Draft at the Cascade Barrelhouse. Dark purple in colour with medium carbonation. Aromas are of dried tart purple berries, chocolate, violets, and oak barrel. Very concentrated and tart berries dominate the palate, backed by elements of dark chocolate and earth. Sourness builds as I drink, but in a good way. Excellent stuff.
Tannpuss blir overflødig i kveld. En av kceldens absolutt beste.
3.6 Aromat kwaśny, mieszanka bzu i octu balsamicznego, melasy. W smaku wysoka, czysta, mlekowa kwaśność, nuty ziołowe, na finiszu cierpki posmak bzowy.

3.7 Bottle: Poured a dark cloudy copper color ale with a small foamy head with limited retention and some lacing. Aroma of tart and sour elderberry notes is interesting. Taste is a mix of vinous notes with some oak and tart notes of elderberry with light acidic notes also noticeable. Body is full with limited filtration and good carbonation. Well done with intense flavours while retaining some drinkability.
3.4 75cl bottle via Grand Cru. It pours a deep amber red color with a small beige head. Aroma Is sour and acidic with notes of lemon juice balsamic vinegar cherry pits tart cherries and grapes. Taste is very sour, verging on the acetic side of the spectrum, with more notes of lemon juice, tart cherries, in ripe grapes, slight spices. Medium bodied with good carbonation. Overall, lacks balance
3.2 750 ml corked & caged bottle, as Cascade Oak Aged Elderberry Northwest Sour Ale, ale aged in oak barrels with elderberries and spices, 2015 Project. ABV is 7.0%. At Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. Fairly dark brown colour, huge beige head. Aroma of sour (black) elderberries, lemons, farmhouse kitchen, spices and malts. Sour / acidic, tart and astringent flavour, loads of lactic acid, notes of lemons and sour elderberries.
3.7 Bottle. Elderberry, caramel malt, and straw aroma. Amber with small head. Moderately sweet elderberry, caramel malt, moderately sour vinegar/citric acid, and mildly bitter hay flavor. Good body. Nice beer - impossible to drink without quoting Monty Python.
3.7 Towering tan head over opaque red-brown beer. Nose like blue/billberry, but also lactic acid, wood, and something strong fusely:estrery that betrays the true elderberry smell. Very sour, lactic, dark/red fruit, lemon, and a wild, spicy character. Bit of rotten fruit, too, in the background - again the elderberry, which sports this pugnancy (which drove me mad in my youth, being forced to down elderberry syrup against colds...)? The taste of (unripe, IMO) grapeskins, as suggested, is also very remarkable. Very tart, dry-out effet, acidthinning and -burn. Again a very tart USA sour. A bit of balance wouldn’t hurt, I would dare to suggest.
