Cascade Manhattan NW

Cascade Manhattan NW

Manhattan NW, a NW style sour ale that was, until recently, a secret. It’s a blend of Blond Quad aged in Heaven Hill Bourbon barrels on 150 pounds of sour pie cherries for five months before additionally aging on apricot noyaux for three months. Aromas of cherries, Bourbon, sweet candy and hints of spice are noticed up front. Tart cherry skins and Maraschino cherries on the palate lead to a dance of rich cherry notes that are followed by slight Bourbon sweetness. Much like the process to make fission, the steps involved here are greater than the sum of their parts. What isn’t a secret? At 11.32% ABV, you’re going to need a designated driver

3.8 2015 edition classy-labelled brown bottle. Pours a hazy caramel-orange colour with an off-white head with a decent amount that coats the brew and leaves a little lace. Aromas are sour with lots of fruitiness, like the cherries used in this one, plus many more. The mouthfeel is quite sour with some nice tart on the tongue. The taste shows the sourness over the fruity cherries flavours. Again, lots of other good fruits. This is very good for a wild ale, but after reading the description with a Quadrupel, Blonde Ale and even barrel aged, just expecting a tad more out of this.
3.9 0,75l bottle at home shared by Thomas, big thanks. Vintage 2015. redish cloudy color, small white head. smells lactic, leathery, peach, light wood, light cherries, decent but also bit weird smell. full body, bit pearly carbonation, slick mouthfeel. tastes of citrus, cherries, rather lactic, salty, spices, some lime, light apricot. finishes quite dry and medium sour with citrus, lactic and lime notes. quite good one, great taste, alcohol not noticeable, smell wasnt that great though.
4.0 2014 and 2015 bottles shared by my daughter. Nose is oak and cherries along with the tiniest hint of funk. Gold with a medium, lightly lacing, off white head. Flavor is lightly sweet and fruity with hints of tartness and funk.
4.2 [10684-20180719] Large bottle. Nutty cherry barrel aroma has a spicy note. Hazy, orange red body with a quick foamy white head. Sour cherry fruit flavour has a lonnnnng barrel finish. Medium-full body is super sour. Delicious. (7/3/9/5/18) 4.2 (c/o blankboy, w/ him, GregClow, HogTownHarry, jercraigs) Overheard: "It's the fact that he came right as he swallowed." "4.8!"
3.7 [Bottle (750ml) shared with HogTownHarry, GregClow, jercraigs & mabel -- c/o j&m] 2015 vintage. Pours a deep orange-pink with an average size diminishing frothy white head. Aroma (7+) of tart cherries, some spices, caramel malt, yeast and apricots. Flavour follows and is quite tart and a bit vinegary. Medium bodied. Good stuff.
4.0 [2016] 750ml bottle. Slightly hazy reddish orange with a thin foamy white head. Flavors are lemon, cherry, spices and oak with floral notes. Generous lactic acidity. Medium to full body, moderate carbonation, oily texture.
3.8 Sampled at the SEC Craft Beer Fest in CoMo. Cherries lead and are generally sweeter. I see here the ABV and am surprised it is that high. Oak and funk with herbal notes. Interesting.
4.3 Bottle from lcbo. Massive sour. Notes of peach apricot. Huge tart. Light body lively carbonation.
4.0 (Bottle) hazy, bright pinkish orange colour with a small white head; aroma of sourness, funk, leather; moderately sour flavour with a long, strong sour finish, well hidden alcohol
3.8 2018-07-19. Hazy red-orange amber body, small beige head. 3+ Aroma is lightly funky, fruity, touches of apricot. 7+ Flavour is moderately sour throughout, apricot, sour cherry. Gets significantly more sour as you go through the glass. Average plus bodied palate, good carbonation. Very nice. 7/3/8/3/17 2015 Vintage labeled bottle from the LCBO, Toronto. 3.9 Taster at THBS. Pours a slightly hazy orange with a white head. Typical Cascade. Very fruity, strong berry character, vinous, heavy oak, bright lime. Lovely.
3.5 Bottle: Poured a blonde color ale with a large pure white foamy head with OK retention and light lacing notes. Aroma of acidic notes with light barrel-aged notes with some subtle candi sugar notes also perceptible. Taste is also a mix of acidic notes with some light oak notes, some barrel-aged notes and candi sugar are also noticeable. Body is about average for style with good carbonation. More complex than other beers from this brewery but still too acid for my taste.
3.9 750ml bottle, corked and caged, from the lcbo. Pours a light brown, almost orange with a medium white head. Tart cherries, woody Bourbon barrel, light spice, and hints if vanilla. Mouth feel is very effervescent, with a lively carb. Finish is very sour, with an interesting bourbon/ candied cherry finish. Lots of woody, earthy barrel, sweet cherries and sour stone fruit. Complex and very interesting.
3.7 On tap at Rogue Convention Centre in Vancouver. A dark brown beer with a bit of white head and a sour fruity nose. Slightly sweet, very sour, very cherry fruity. Some barrel influence is evident. I'm liking it. 3.7
3.8 On tap. Pours a deep reddish brown with little head. Aromas of vinous wood, sugary malts, balsamic vinegar, and old cherries. Flavors follow same with more sweet/sour cherry presence.
3.6 Draft to mini-snifter at The Pint Room. Looks good for the style; a hazy caramelish red with off-white head. Smells as advertised; like a BB-aged sour quad with a notable cherry presence. Tastes like it smells, but even more sour, and with a bigger brett presence. Mouthfeel is medium full-bodied and very tart. Good, but 5 ounces is plenty.
4.0 Sample at Mikkeller Beer Celebration Copenhagen 2018, Red Session. Aroma has sweet pollen, floral honey and orchard fruits. Taste is sour, puckering, really dry, woody, acidic with some background fruit preserve sweetish notes.
3.9 Draught at Alibi Room, Vancouver Cloudy red color, no head. The aroma is sour, fruit, raspberry. Strong body, some residual sweetness, strong acidity, strong raspberry flavour, some blackberry, but no harsh tannins; some astringency in the final. Indeed very good.
4.2 duft: lime funk. svampet. kompleks. smag. tør sur limehindbær frugtig kirsebær sur
3.2 Sampled at MBCC 2018. Medium high fluffy white lasting head. Hazy orange body. Acidic cherries aroma. Acidic lemon cherries buorbon flavor with little hops bitterness, low carbonation and a long finish.
4.3 Smells damn incredible, like a sweet cherry lambic, very funky and musty woody cellar. Very sour with a sweet cherry balance, acidic but still smooth, puckering and powerful. A long aftertaste, very nice wood but bourbon is not dominant. Astounding brew!
3.4 Nice complexity of fussy barrel treatments and additions to attempt balance with the assertively sour flavors. Very stunning, equal to the Sang du Chene. I'm not getting bourbon and the background treatments are subtle.
3.7 750 ml bottle from LCBO. Pours a murky pinkish peach colour with small pink-tinged head. Aroma is juicy cherries, apricot, mellow tartness and sugar. Flavour has much more pronounced tartness and sweet bourbon character with lots of cherry, some apricot and light wood. Alcohol is very subtle. Well done.
4.1 Bottle ftrom LCBO. Pours a hazy pink colour with a small head that reduces into a ring. Aromas of cherries, brett yeast. Taste matches the aroma with an intensive sour taste. High carbonation.
3.9 Bottle pours brown with a thin off white head. Aroma of cherries and funk. Taste is tart cherries and bourbon
3.9 Tap at Ale Arsenal. Pureed strawberry with no head except for a wisp around the collar with slight patterns. Bourbon shows more on the flavor, not much on the aroma. Bing cherry on both aroma and flavor. Overt tartness.
4.3 tap/multiqlti. jasnoczerwone, wyraźny krążek grubopęcherzykowej piany, która pozostaje na szkle w postaci obfitej pajęczyny. aromat czerwonej porzeczki, wiśni, wyraźnie funky, przejrzała truskawka, kompost, nutka szlachetnego alkoholu. po ogrzaniu lekko miodowe? w smaku octowe, kwaskowate, owocowo kwaśne, wyraźna czerwona porzeczka, długi kwaśny finisz, piwo wybitnie degustacyjne. super
4.2 Aromat - wiśnia, czereśnia, nieco malin trochę pestkowy. Głęboko smak uderza kwaśną wiśnia, potem lekko cierpkie nuty pestkowe i znów kwasnosc. Nieco debiny w tle. A na sam koniec trochę wanilii. Wow po chwili wychodzą nuty lekko torfowe. Złożone fest, alkohol ukryty idealnie.
3.9 Draught Aroma-berries, cherries Appearance-rouge, hazy, white foam Taste-heavily sour, lightly bitter, light sweetness, Palate-medium body, sticky, average carbonation, long finish, Overall-very good
3.9 Draft at Bru Craft. 2015 vintage. Very hazy dark pinkish/ruby pour. No head. Strong sour cherries. Raspberries. Apricot. Red currant. The Bourbon barrel adds a lot of depth. Hints of peat and cocoa. Well done.
