Cascade Stout

Cascade Stout

Fatty Appleton, a colourful brewery worker, was known for his ability to carry 2 Firkin barrels under his arms (yes, they’re known as Firkins). It’s a skill that would work as ’crowd control’ when things got out of hand at the local.

Deep and rich in colour, Stout has a slightly nutty roasted flavour and chocolate characteristics, with a smooth and creamy body and pleasantly bitter after-taste. Fatty Appleton would approve!

3.7 375ml bottle into pint glass. Chocolatey boozy nose. Black beer with no light penetration, tan head. Quite a lot of carbonation. Light bodied, first taste is spritzy and bitter then milk chocolate. Finish is lingering dark chocolate/cocoa. Really nice. Australia has some great stouts but no-one seems to drink them.
3.1 From bottle, Sydney Coffee, roasted malts Some smokey hint, coffee very drinkable
3.5 From bottle in Xiamen, China. Pours black with a small head. No real lacing. Aroma is coffee and roasted malts. Taste is coffee, roasted malts, almost smoky, a little sweet, and more bitter. Bitter finish. Medium mouthfeel.
3.0 This beer hits and misses in equal measure. It smells and tastes lovely with toffee and dark chocolate being most prominent and a pleasant bitterness with a little coffee flavour at the end. It pours like cola, a lovely near black colour with a dark tan head that fades almost instantly. It had way too much carbonation however and it feels like lager in the mouth.
3.6 375 ml bottle from Tasty Life, Xiamen. Pours black with a thin off white head. Roasted aroma with chocolate. Dry bitter finish.
1.0 This is the first time to try this beer. It has barnyard aroma, black appearance, light bitter taste, and sticky texture. Overall, this beer is not for me.........
3.0 Roasted malt, coffee, chocolate, light brown sugar in the aroma. Flavor is the same with a bit of bourbon. A bit bittersweet. While it wasn’t bad, it wasn’t all that good, either. Simple is it’s best quality.
2.3 Tap. Black, frothy, brown foam, medium bitterness, medium body, oily feel, soft carbonation, & astringent finish.
3.7 375ml bottle. Poured with a thick and creamy thus lacing and lasting dark tan to light brown head atop a deep but clear dark brown, almost black, body. Rich dark chocolate, espresso and roasted malt characters across both aroma and to taste with a slight caramel and milk chocolate sweetness. Some dark, dried fruit notes in the mid-palate. Medium in body with soft to medium carbonation and a lengthy bitter malt finish. A competent, well-brewed and full-flavoured stout.
3.6 Pours a nice black, typical stout aroma’s of coffee, roasted malts and a roasty nuttiness. Taste. Mainly espresso coffee, and a slight dark chocolate flavour accompanied with a pleasant bitterness throughout. Overall. This beer just rates slightly above the crowd and is good for the price.
3.0 Pours a very dark brown. Smells of roasted malts and coffee. Has a slight sweet date of chocolate followed by coffee bitterness. Flavors are not very strong.
2.7 Pours black with a thin tan film for a head. Aroma of dainty cocoa and some stone. Flavor of chocolate, metal and water. somewhat runny, thin. Roasted sweet malt finisb with a touch of algae.
3.2 From 375 ml bottle. Pours a deep black with a thin tan head that collapses to a collar. Aromas of chocolate, coffee, cocoa nibs and a hint of dark fruit. Taste is dominated by black coffee with notes of chocolate also evident. However there’s an odd mineral note that’s out of kilter. Dark chocolate aftertaste. Certainly not bad, but not my favourite stout.
3.5 First rating Bottled 375 ml at The Royal Oak, Launceston. Sampled on August 6, 2013. As "Cascade Export Stout". Black color, small tan to brown head. Sweet, roasted taste. Roasted aftertaste. Medium mouthfeel, medium bitterness. Sweet, roasted scent. 7/3/8/3/15=3.6 Rerate Draught at Cascade Visitor Centre, South Hobart. As part of a tasting paddle after the brewery tour. Sampled on August 8, 2013. Black color, brown head. Coffee, sweet taste. Alcohol, coffee aftertaste. Medium to smooth mouthfeel, high cry bitterness. Coffee, sweet scent. 7/4/7/3/14=3.5
3.3 On tap at the brewery. Deep black in colour with a solid tan head. Aromas of roasted nuts and chocolate. Pleasantly bitter coffee after taste. Quite heavy with medium carbonation. One of cascade’s better efforts.
3.2 Deep black with generous mocha head. A very subtle aroma of roasted grain and chocolate. Flavours of roasted nuts and chocolate with a slight hint of coffee towards the end of the dry palate. Lacking in depth but an enjoyable beer from a big brewer.
4.0 I love this beer. It is a beautiful dark colour and has a great head. Rich chocolate and coffee flavour with a nice bitter finish. For a commercially made Aussie beer this is a good one.
3.3 Poured into my favourite beer glass, the snifter, a nice looking stout with a lovely beige head, aromas of roasted grains, flavours of coffee and dark chocolate, medium carbonation, a good stout, and cheap too
2.9 Appearance: Dark brown-black, with a little beige coloured head. Leaves a bit of lacing down the glass, but nothing remarkable. Aroma: Most of the aroma is dominated by roasted grains, with a slight bit of dark chocolate. A little bit of coffee / dirty mustiness is just barely perceptible. Taste: Again, mostly roasted grains and dark chocolate, with hints of coffee. Not hugely complex or inviting, but no real flaws apart from being a little too thin. Mouthfeel: A bit too thin and a bit too carbonated for the style. Quite drying. Overall: Not too bad, especially from a ’macro’ brewery that normally produces standard adjunct lagers, but not nearly as full-bodied and complex as a good stout should be. Definitely more of a sessionable stout.
2.9 Dark beer with moderate creamy foam that lingers long. The label says "smooth and rich", I agree to the former statement. Very smooth and easily drinkable, caramel sweetness abounds. Lacking in "richness", however. Somewhat light. Quite nice as dessert.
3.6 (Bottle) Clear and dark brown, slight white head. Aroma of coffee and chocolate. Medium body, good carbonation. Flavour starts with coffee, chocolate, dark toffee and has a slightly sour refreshing finish. Overall, very drinkable.
2.9 Flat & dull aroma, nothing special. Appearance is extremely dark, definitely looks like the stout it should be. Tastes of caramel and burnt coffee, lingering taste of bitter malt and over carbonation. Palate is below average, has an over carbonated watery feel to it. Overall a drinkable commodity stout out of Tasmania, but nothing special.
3.3 Pours a dark brown color with a good frothy tan head that fades to some lacing. Aroma of roasted malt and some chocolate and bit of nut in the background. Taste of roasted malt with chocolate and nut. Mild bitterness and a clean finish. Fairly medium body, but a bit light for a stout. Smooth with a decent balance. Nice stout but seems to be a bit lacking in richness and character.
3.0 Probably the best beer cascade make. Some nice toasty characters but a but thin and watery
3.0 Re-rating on 10/04/2014 Aroma of milk chocolate, suddenly changing to chilly soy soauce, those that go with Malay food. Better impression than previously. Salty stout, I like it. - The original rating was: What disappointment...A Tasmanian stout "had everything to work", but it doesn’t. This is hardly a stout. Looks muddy, with no head, smells like cheap chocolate and something skunky - a possum? Tastes like nutella and dirty water. Perhaps they should take this one to extinction too. Or else, there’s still time and plenty of space to make something better out of it.
2.8 A-- Pretty aggressive pour got a near jet black pour, just some tinges of red at the bottom of the glass. Medium carbonated but did get a large dark brown head the quickly disappeared into just film.It did leave a good amount of lacing. Maybe too over carbonated as head retention is pretty good in a few swirls S-- Dark roasted malts being most evident and then a slight bit of a coffee finish. Has a bit of a peat smell in this as wood is evident in the smell. No sweet smell to this at all and pretty much has looked and smelled like a classic stout. T-- The coffee taste seriously helps the beer out as it is on the thin side. Roasted malts are there but need to be kicked up a bunch more. Lacks thickness but is smooth. M-- A tad bit over carbonated and could use a lot more malt and coffee to back a thin side but it is still smooth and balanced for what it has. Does have some coffee bitterness but needs more for a really good punch. D-- At 5.8% it is very drinkable. It is a bit hard to find as Coopers Stout really dominates the market in Australia. Still, this is a good stout. It has some weak points but this is an enjoyable stout. A workable offering from one of the big breweries in Australia. With a little more body this would be very good.
3.6 Cascade night at Urban Family. Chocolate, tobacco and coffee. Nice medium dry, toffee and espresso. Nice bitter, mild stout, lots of flavor.
3.3 375ml bottle. A very nice stout. Good malt characteristics. Cascade’s best brew by far
3.0 Dark colour with white head. Roasted aroma, no coffee, more on the sweet side.
3.6 There should be more love for this stout. Obviously it’s not one of those stouts that is going to blow your mind or your head off, but it is superbly balanced, sessionable, and full of smooth roasted mocha flavours that combine well together. Great for summer. Well worth a shot
