Catawba White Zombie Ale

Catawba White Zombie Ale

Although named as a Halloween seasonal, White Zombie’s refreshing taste makes it a year round staple. It is brewed according to the Belgian Witbier tradition of using unmalted wheat to create the light body and white sheen. Additions of coriander and orange peel give it a fruity and spicy character, while the hops are subtle and lightly detected. Don’t be scared to blow the head off a Zombie and drink up!

Note: Since 2022/23 brewed at Faubourg.

3.5 Smooth white ale with an easy finish. Think a typical white ale but a thinner body and less edge.
3.2 12 oz can pours a hazy yellow color with a nice white head. Aromas of lemongrass, light citrus, floral. Light bodied, nice and refreshing.
3.0 Can from Bierkoning, Amsterdam. Aroma is spicy with coriander, citrus, orange peel, wheaty malt, and yeasty notes. Flavour is medium sweet and lightly bitter. Body is medium. A pretty sweet decent Witbier.
2.9 Hazy pale yellow color. Slightly sweet aroma. Flavor is slightly sweet wheat beer and light bitter citrus with a subtle spice. Good example of witbier. Easy drinking.
3.4 11/23/18 - Wilmington Island, Ga - Kroger - 12 oz can. Hazy, medium gold snow white frothy head. Grassy aroma, hint of coriander. Hint of coriander spice, light bubble gum, yeasty finish. Crisp mouthfeel.
2.9 hay, cereal, and butterscotch points. Not the best beer out of North Carolina but still able to stand up with the bigger national brands.
3.3 12 oz can from ATL with a 2018 canning date. Pours with a lightly hazy, golden body topped by a short white head that has decent retention but that leaves limited of lacing. Fruity and wheaty aroma. The flavor is lightly sweet, with a generous amount of orange and coriander. Mildly bitter aftertaste. Light+ body with medium+ carbonation. Overall: mild, fruity, refreshing
2.6 It's a cloudy yellow beer with very strange white specs. Light citrus notes but nothing worth talking about.
3.6 12 ounce can. Really surprised by the low ratings. I found this beer refreshing. The aroma isn't much to write about but the color is a great light golden hue you expect of the style. Great hot summer day beer.
3.7 Rachel brought this one back from a trip to KY +++ Sampled from a 12 oz can this beer poured a cloudy pale yellow color with a medium sized fluffy yellow white head that lingered and left decent lacing. The aroma was sweetish with lemon, orange, pineapple, dust and tropical fruit. The flavor was sweet with lemon, orange, yeast, a bit of white pepper, faint mustiness and tropical fruit. Medium length finish. Medium body.
3.9 12 ounce can into pint glass, canned on 7/28/2017. Pours fairly hazy/cloudy pale golden yellow color with a 1-2 finger fairly dense and fluffy white head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of lemon, orange peel, pear, red apple, melon, coriander, peppercorn, clove, wheat, cracker, white bread dough, herbal, floral, grass, and yeast earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance and complexity of fruity/spicy yeast, spices, and moderate pale/wheat malt notes; with solid strength. Taste of lemon, orange peel, pear, red apple, melon, coriander, peppercorn, clove, wheat, cracker, white bread dough, herbal, floral, grass, and yeast earthiness. Light herbal/grassy/citrus peel bitterness, yeast spiciness, and wheat tang/tartness on the finish. Lingering notes of lemon, orange peel, pear, red apple, melon, coriander, peppercorn, clove, wheat, cracker, white bread dough, herbal, floral, grass, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/spicy yeast, spices, and moderate pale/wheat malt flavors; with a great malt/bitter/spiciness balance, and zero cloying/astringent flavors after the finish. Light-moderate increasing dryness from bitter/spiciness. Medium carbonation and light-medium body; with a very smooth, moderately crisp, and creamy/bready/grainy/sticky balanced mouthfeel that is great. Zero warming alcohol as expected of 5.1%. Overall this is a very nice witbier. All around nice complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/spicy yeast, spices, and moderate pale/wheat malt flavors; very smooth, crisp, and refreshing to drink with the mildly bitter/spicy/drying finish. Very flavorful and not watery for the ABV. Very well balanced between all flavors. A very enjoyable offering. Very classic tasting spot on style example.
3.2 Hazy golden coloured body with a thin white head, about two centimetres tall. Aroma of wheat, light perfume and spice with some lavender, herbs and a dose of oregano in the mix as well with some lighter malts and a dose of grass as well. Light to Medium-bodied; Strong wheatie and grassy flavours with perfume and funk at first with a very mild malt profile with some light grain and herbal flavours towards the end with a very dry and grassy finish. Aftertaste shows some light coriander seed, curacao, a touch of bubble gum and grasses and only a touch of grain noticeable at the end. Overall, a nice and very light beer with a ton of grassy and light spice flavours and some mild sugars, with very little else, aside from some wheat and a bit of yeast as well with some breadie notes. Good to sample, especially in the summertime, with some light flavours, but goes down quite easily. I sampled this twelve ounce can purchased from Grape Vine in Fort Mill, South Carolina on 21-August-2017 for US$1,89 after watching the Eclipse in South Carolina, sampled at home on the Eastern Shore of Virginia in Pungoteague, Virginia on 20-April-2018.
3.1 Pours an amber from a tap. Nondescript grainy aroma. Light yeast noted in the flavor, doughy. Effervescence dissipates rather quickly. Good beer.
2.9 12 oz. can. Pours hazy yellow with a small white head. Aroma of wheat, yeast, lemon notes. Taste is wheat, yeast, citrus, lemon, coriander. Okay.
2.4 Tap at taproom. A bit hazy pale yellow colour, small white colour. Light wheaty wort aroma. Light-bodied. Some wheaty banana flavour and grass. Crisp, a bit lemony finish. Meh.
4.3 It pours a hazy pale yellow with a large white long lasting head. The aroma is wheat, Belgian yeast and spices. I taste wheat, coriander and citrus with a wonderful creamy mouthfeel. This isn't the best wit I've ever drank but it's real good.
3.6 Have enjoyed this Catawba classic now on a few occasions, only from the can so far, but anyhow I found this to be an exceptionally delicious and drinkable white ale, in the running with the standard-setting Alagash White for my favorite rendition of the style. Pours a quite hazy yellow-gold with a strong bouquet of wheat and citrus fruit juice on the nose. Flavor follows with fresh and fruity notes of orange and coriander and a subtle herbal hoppiness, along with a clean wheaty grain. Medium-bodied and smooth on the palate, definitely something I could see myself drink regularly. Judging by several other reviews I would consider this an underrated beer!
3.0 Translucent, grapefruit juice pour with a snowy white head. Ragged, shrinkwrap tallboy. Yeasty, coriander aroma, with faint lemon. Lightly sweet, not bitter,a little biscuity, Mouthfeel was thin and watery, carbonation retention was poor. Lackluster. Enjoyed at LuckyDog's, Newland, NC.
3.3 This beer is quite alright by me! It’s not my favorite but it’s definitely worth a try. Especially if you like blue moon, 805, modella or corona.
3.0 355ml can. Pours a hazed gold. Aroma and flavor are pretty damn close to blue moon to me but my fiancee who hates hops did not like this despite enjoying blue moon.
3.3 Fairly solid and straight forward witbeer. Nice wheat character. Not too much spicing.
3.5 Lots of oranges. Little bit of spice. Big wheat smooth and lemony. Light hazy yellow color. Straw. Straw and lemon aromas.
2.7 Can from BP Garage, Acton, North Carolina. Hazy paler golden with a small to thin head. Perhaps its the can, but the witbier character is lacking despite the fact its style is essentially there. There’s little flavour to it.
2.8 Kind of a heavy wit. Coriander, orange, cracker. Not very much Belgian. Seemed too much of a hefty mouthfeel. Meh.
3.2 Can at an Indian restaurant Chai Panni in downtown Asheville. Went well with the food there. Pours a hazy yellow with a white head. Nose is some light wheat, mild lemon and citrus, and a slight tartness. Flavor is similar with the mild tartness standing out in the lemon and citrus profile, especially in the finish. Light to medium in body and a nice wheat overall.
3.5 appearance: medium gold, creamy white head with good cling, lots of small floaties, with aggressive carb that sends them up in a loop like a beer lava lamp. aroma: lemon verbena, toasted coriander, light cracker. taste: half-baked pie crust, hint of citrus, slightly sour, a bit of coriander and pepper. finish: doesn’t finish clean or bright like you’d expect from the style . notes: Not a terribly impressive take on the style, middling at best. Needs a zestier palate, brighter flavors, a bit more zip in general. Can from Total Wine in Charleston, South Carolina. NOTE: Re-rating to reflect higher score. Second time out had it on draft, and it made a ton of difference. Much fresher, brighter, and with a superior finish. No floaties, just a good haze too.
3.8 On tap at MSBS Rock Hill. Slight malt vanilla aroma. Golden with lacing. Tasting dry wheat, coriander, spice, citrus, vanilla, pepper. Dry and refreshing. Good stuff.
3.2 6 oz taster pours golden with a white head. Aroma of orange, spice, grass and some grains. Taste is citrus, nice yeast and coriander.
2.8 Pours a slightly hazy golden yellow on tap with thin bubbly white head. Aroma of raw wheat and mild citrus. Taste follows, no real esters here, maybe wrong yeast? Meh, more American than Belgian.
2.7 this is a mess. very malty and wheaty. could not finish this "beer". some belgium yeast flavors too. light yellow in color. had in north carolina.
