Celis White (Belgium)

Celis White (Belgium)

Unfiltered in bottle and keg.

Pierre Celis created the original Hoegaarden beer in the early 1960’s. Interbrew-Labatt bought the brand and the brewery in the 1980's. Pierre Celis formed a new brewery in Austin Texas, brewing the same beer but under the brand name Celis White. Miller bought the Celis brewery and the Celis White brand-name in 1996. The brewery closed in 2000. In late 2002 Michigan Brewing bought the Celis White brand from Miller. Brouwerij Van Steenberge is now brewing the original Pierre Celis White under the brand-name Celis White in Europe and Ertveld's Wit in North America.

3.2 St.Stefanus Blanche, bottle from Waitrose. It was OK - didn't really taste entirely like what I'd expect of a blanche, quite a rich taste to it. OK though.
3.1 330ml glass bottle bought for £2.39 from Waitrose London Westfield. Branded under the alias of St Stefanus Blanche. Served fridge cold into a weizen glass. Dated as best before 06/2020. The bottle information contains a guide for ageing the drink, suggesting that I should buy one while on offer and cellar for the next 18 months. The appearance of the beer is light light white straw. Very hazy with many streams of tiny bubbles constantly reaching for the top of the glass with determination if not speed. As typical for the style a huge foamy white head produced from a gentle pour, eventually dissipating to a single finger worth. The aroma is dominated by a nice mild level of spicing from the coriander. Some wheat and a very light fruit presence. Enticing if not interesting. Everything up to the taste is fairly promising but this beer is let down by the bland taste. Mild spice but nothing else. Certainly, non of the expected orange peel to my palate. The mouthfeel is thin and watery, with the slightest hit of carbonation. The taste dies away from the palate quickly. Minimal spice, and very minimal bitter pith, but it feels searched for. As the beer would be £2.99 full price I feel it is overpriced for the level of taste and palate. Not enough flavour and too watery. I wouldn’t bother with it again, far better examples of the style are readily available.
2.8 Creamy white head stayed on a hazy well carbonated body. Citrus & yeast aroma. Medium bodied, tingly on the tongue with creamy cloying back. Spices malt, banana & yeast tastes.
3.1 Citrus and spice. Slightly sour which cuts through the usual sweet banana flavours of wheat beer. Nice chilled on a hot day.
3.4 Pours a cloudy light straw colour with a small head. Good wit. Strong coriander and light white pepper, with some wheat acidity.
4.0 S Juan de Luz. Cerveza blanca de trigo. Muy agradable con sabor cítrico.
3.5 Bottle at home as St Stephanus Blanche. Picked up from Waitrose Canary Wharf. A a light hazed yellow straw coloured pour wth a lively rocky white head. Aroma is big clove, spicy, wheat, doughy, fennel, chamomile. Flavour is composed of cirps soft wheat, hay, floral notes, chamomile tea, clove, low fruit. Palate is high prickly carbonation, airy, some sweetness and crisp finish.

3.1 St. Stefanus blanche. Liked this one a lot. 4% light. Nice belgian yeast. Same flavors as rehular st. Stefanus
3.5 St Stefanus Blanche, 330 ml bottle from M&S at ABV 5.0 %. Aroma is malts, citrus, yeast and spices. Pours a yellow-golden hazy body with a big white head. Taste is malts, citrus, yeast and spices as well. Very refreshing Quite mild compared to most Belgo-wits. Enjoyable!
3.4 Bottle from Willems. Poors very hazy, small head. Aroma typical coriander and orange peel but also very creamy, lactose even. Taste with decent body as well, lots of wheat, somewhat sticky but not overdone. Full bodied taste, refreshing as well, light grainy hoppy finish.
3.2 330ml bottle from Waitrose, Bagshot. Cloudy gold colour with large white head, nice lacing. Sweet bready malt, wheaty, orange peel, light lemon juice, coriander, sour wheat, spices. Bit watery but nice standard wit

4.0 330ml bottle from Auchan. Pours misty yellow, white head, aroma is fresh bright spicy citrus. Taste follows with a nice bright citrussy wit character. Nice pleasant fruity sweet element. Decent. Earlier Rating: 10/5/2013 Total Score: 3.8 25cl bottle from Vanuxeem. Reading the history of this beer after a long day just gives me a headache.. so I’ll just say to me this tastes like a hazier version of Hoegaarden. I need to have a bottle of both to really compare tho.

Hoegaarden. Wat fruitiger ook.
3.8 Refreshing Belgium Blanche, perfect for light fare. Well balanced, soft breadiness with fine bubbles and soft zing of wheat and lemon. Great summer/autumn beer.
3.0 Jaune citron trouble, énorme mousse! Nez citronné, un peu sucré et levures. Gout citronné (un peu tarte au citron ou chewing gum) avec coriandre et légères levures. Fin assez sèche Earlier Rating: 10/7/2014 Total Score: 3.1 Couleur jaune trouble, petite mousse blanche. Nez citrique beurré, paille, cake fruité, épices. 3.8 330 ml bottle, bb 14/08/2019. Straw with copper tint, cloudy, snow white head. Nose - coriander, banana, yeast, dust. Taste - yeast, coriander, lemon, banana. Coriander aftertaste, prickly carbonation.
3.0 50cl bottle from Waitrose. Cloudy golden colour with a billowing white head. Yeasty flavour with notes of lemon, coriander and bubblegum. Surprising lack of depth and intensity for an Abdijbier. Rather light with a watery finish. Certainly tastes less than the 5% ABV indicated. Quite refreshing and delicate, but slightly underpowered in the flavour department.
5.0 Very smooth Belgium beer. Hoppy aroma.
3.4 Butelka 330ml. Lekko metnawy złoty kolor. Piana biała, obfita,o drobnych pęcherzach opada powoli zdobiąc szkło. W aromacie kolendra ,banany, ziarno i trawa. W smaku delikatne ,banany, kolendra, zioła i wyraźne drożdże. Lekkie nuty cytrusowe. Niezle
