Chang Beer 6.4%

Chang Beer 6.4%

Bottle: Filtered.

Domestic product, retired in Summer 2015.

ThaiBev stopped production of Archa, Chang Beer, Chang Draught, and Chang Export in 2015. A new product, Chang Classic, was launched, with production shared between ThaiBev’s three breweries. The recipe of Chang Beer was changed to include rice, previously only used in the domestic 6.4% version. It is sold as 5.5% abv in some markets.

Chang was made with the vision of the top executives to expand the beer market with a Thai taste albeit with international quality, to give the consumers an alternative with the fervent belief in the brewing and production capability of the Thais. With its attractive taste and a price that appealed to consumers at all levels, the response and success of Beer Chang marked a new era and turned a new page for the Thai beer industry. In 1998 Beer Chang was awarded the “Gold Medallion” at the International Beer Competition in Australia in the category of “Lager, Unlimited Degree”. Since then, Beer Chang has become known as “the international Gold Medallion winner beer of Thailand”. Note: alcohol content may vary

2.0 schmeckt nicht schlecht, da es nach nichts schneckt
1.6 "I could say things like goes wel with food, isn’t offensive, etc, etc...but really that’s just a nice way of saying this beer sucks. Not as bad as some. It’s crisp and dry and those things are nice. But it’s an adjunct lager through and through.

2.0 Canned from 7/11. Lots of malt, nothing hoppy to be found. Exactly as expected, a sugarly malty beer with no complexity.
2.9 Bottle, 6% ABV. Sweetish, malty, tasteful, with floral estery notes. It’s crisp and yet quite robust for a southern lager. A big surprise, this is actually a decent beer.
1.9 Bottled. Pale yellow color. Malty aroma. Malty taste with no hops. Another disappointing south beer.
1.9 Bottle 33 cl. Pours clear yellow, with diminishing white head. Smells like a malty soda pop. A tastes similarly, moderate sweet and carbonated.
1.3 Bottle. Light, a little bitter, short, clear, a little corn. Another cheap beer in Thailand that supposedly won a bunch of awards. I would like to know who gave these out and for what category exactly.
2.9 6.0% ABV version poured from a can in Thailand. Aroma has a light graininess with some corn character. Faint sulfur and light floral esters. Not really any hop character. Fairly clean without diacetyl. Pours a very clear pale yellow gold with a moderately thick, inch tall white head that slowly recedes. Light lacing and no legs. Flavor is rather bland with quite a bit of corn character and a light, sweet graininess. Medium low bitterness with no hop flavor. Bitterness in finish is a bit harsh. Low floral ester notes and light sulfur. No diacetyl. Mouthfeel is light bodied with medium carbonation. Medium low astringency with low alcohol warmth. Overall it’s not a very enjoyable beer but it does the trick. It’s alright upfront, though a lot of adjunct but the finish is not very clean.
1.6 @ Lanta Casuarina Beach Resort, Koh Lanta, Thailand. Flaska från lokalt hak. Ganska söt och maltig doft och smak. Alldeles för liten beska och en kort eftersmak.
1.4 500 ml can bought at 7-Eleven in Metropolis Plaza, Sheung Shui. Piss pale golden yellow colour; Very thin head and white foam which fades in 20 seconds; Minimal lacing and some notable carbonation; Pungent smell of malt, rice, grains, corn syrup, grape juice, light lemon and thin grass; Medium sweet taste of thin malt, with strong rice, light bread, strong thinner / paint stripper, corn syrup, very light wet cardboard, light citrus and grass; Mid to light body, slightly slick palate; Taste profile is typical malt likka - strong solvent taste with obvious burning sensations, plus strong rice and corn syrups - malt taste faded into background, how nice! Booze is all about fusel, and pretty alcoholic as well. Blah! Hoppiness is light lemon and grass in nose and taste, and slight bitterness. Burning fusel finish; Slightly dry after taste, caustic and a boozy to mouth. Comments: Having the other two Changs (Beer and Draught) previously, I didn’t hold much hope for this one and that’s exactly it - typical malt likka with loads of adjuncts and solvents. Should be popular if it was exported to America. Not for me, drain pours after half a glass.
1.8 Had a lot of those while I lived in Thailand. Taste is light but a bit boozy. A quite ok lager.
1.7 Bottle sample at a tasting at the Beer & Beyond shop. Thanks troubles. Pours yellow bubbly with a small head, aroma of honey, grain, lightly funkiness, alcohol, flavor is sweet with honey, light bitterness, unpleasant sourness, light bodied
2.0 Bottle sample at a tasting at the Beer Light golden, clear and bubbly with white head. Corny, slightly worty, slightly alcoholic aroma, sweet alcoholic taste, mellow bitterness. Light body, mildly alcoholic finish. Pretty nasty.
1.3 Bottle sample at a tasting at the Beer & Beyond shop. Thanks troubles. Clear golden with a small white head. Aroma is a bit alcoholic, grainy, sweet, with light honey-ish notes. Sweet grainy flavor, a bit alcoholic, with a light unpleasant bitterness in the finish. Light-bodied and alcoholic.
3.4 640ml bottle in Koh Phangnan, Thailand (100 Baht): Light grain and some faint hops on the nose with some very light skunk. There is some sweetness and corn with a faint hint of alcohol as well. Clear, golden straw colour with a thin, 1cm head that settles as a patchy looking lacing after thirty seconds. Lager malts with some grain, a few adjuncts and a very small taste of alcohol that was to be epected going by the abv. on the bottle. There is a hint of hops and a semi-bitterness with some grassy flavours and a bit of citrus. Smooth for the most part bar the touches of grain. There is some alcohol but it is better hidden than I expected. Medium carbonation compliments a light body and there is a slight citrus tang together with a crisp and very clean feel. A solid Asian beer and my go-to beer anytime I am in the region as it is so much better than the export version that makes its way to Europe and the UK. It’s not outstanding by any means but it is a good beer with a nice alcohol kick that soon catches up on you once you’ve had a few.
0.8 Day five of the malt liquor excursion through the jungles of Bangkok. Big bottle at a bar, didn’t realize it was a malt liquor but now it makes perfect sense because seriously this was the eggiest beer I’ve ever had. Some green apple too in the aroma and flavour was sweet malt, alcohol, and rotten egg. Absolutely disgusting, I miss Cambodian beers.
2.0 640 ml bottle 6.4%. This is a typical asian pale lager style, why anyone would label this a malt liquer is beyond me. Not a bad asian lager as it is, alcohol is noticeable but otherwise the high abv comes as a surprise (unless you read it on the label). Really not any worse than singha, tiger et al. and certainly better than the watered down 5.0% export version.
2.1 Fairly good lager, nothing special. Perfect for a warm and humid night. Thailands pride, it said. Not sure.
2.5 Rich golden color. White head fizzles away to a ring. Rich, malty aroma. Taste is a little bit of sour grain as is to be expected from a high gravity malt liquor. 2 tallboys on the island...
2.8 Changed pretty hard just now. Yellow fizzy pour with a white head. Clean flavor on this one, not much weirdness going on but doesn’t quite hit mat liquor territory at all. Almost no bitterness, just some light dough and a bit of earthiness. Not bad really.
1.6 33cl bottle. Pours golden with a very thin head. Sweet malty flavour, grassy. Flavour is sweet with some alcohol notes.
2.1 11.15 Fl. Oz. Bottle. Poured a pale yellow, clear and with a thick white head and lots of lacing. Aroma is almost not existent, some hint of yeast (bread) and a bit of malts. Taste is also quite dull not much to it, some sweetness and slight bitterness towards the end. Just another beer made with the purpose of being a refreshing beverage in a warm weather and in that sense it does serves it’s purpose.
2.8 Pours piss yellow with no head Aromas of some malts, hints of corn and syrup Has a bit of alcohol sting, there is also some malt body which makes it quite nice and round. Low bitterness, low to medium sweet Actually quite alright
2.0 640ml bottle. Pours a pale, dull straw with a white head. Quite neutral aroma, corn, citrus, and growing notes of cardboard and adjuncts. Off-dry, light to medium bodied, low bitterness, balanced CO2. Neutral taste, slightly creamy mouthfeel, corn, citrus, cardboard, faint notes of diacetyl. (2013-02-26)
2.2 Big white head. Clear yellow body with strong carbonation. Faint mealy papery aroma. Dry-sweetish earthy grassy taste with oily notes. Mid-to-light body. Sharpish mouthfeel. Harshly dryish grassy oily aftertaste with papery alcoholic notes. Not really very nice. (0.33l can, gift from the wife.)
2.7 Appearance: Clear golden color with a white head that soon vanish. Aroma: Mild malty and a bit fruity. Palate: Medium body. Slightly sweet and some bitterness. Average carbonation. Taste: Mild fruity on a fine caramel malty background. Overall impression: Nice fresh lager. Surely dangerous in the heat. Personal stats: Can from a trade with Visionthing.
3.1 From a 330 ml can brought back from Thailand from a coworker when she visited. Pours a golden yellow color with a thick white head with pretty good lacing for a lager. Smells of pale malt, rice, honey, Tastes of all the same things with a decent hop presence for a lager. Can?t even taste the 6.4 abv. Mouthfeel is light and creamy and pretty well carbonated. Overall this is a pretty good foreign lager. Better than thier competition Singha for sure.
2.5 Probably clouded judgement due to the outside temperature.... But I quite like it. Pours light, clear yellow with fairly big white head. Nothing special there. Aroma is bready with slight notes of honey and fruit. Taste is fairly mellow, slightly sweet at first with just a hint of bitterness in the short finish. Body is light with fairly controlled carbonation.
2.8 640ml bottle at a restaurant in Thailand. Yellow/straw colored body. Tiny white head which disappears almost immediately. Has a hint of rice flavor to it. I don’t know what they do to this one, but it gives you a major (C)hangover. :P
