Chapeau Kriek

Chapeau Kriek

Disclaimer: This is the sweetened version of Chapeau Kriek. In 2007 a new version was released, which can come with the same label as Chapeau Kriek, but which is a different beer. This new version is in the database as Chapeau Oude Kriek and it is not sweet. If you had a sweet beer, then you should rate this one. Otherwise, you should rate the Chapeau Oude Kriek.

Description: Since many decades, the brewers of the Senne valley are brewing Lambic. In the 19th century they have created several fruit beers. The cherry beer on base of Lambic was the first or one of the first. The Chapeau Kriek is made on base of Lambic, a artisanal traditional product which ripe on oaken barrels. The Chapeau Kriek is a fresh and delicious beer for delightful moments.

3.0 bottle @ home, 3 years. Cloudy pink color with a tiny pinkish head. Aroma is moderately sweet and dry with notes of sweet cherries, syrup, red berries, dust. Taste is dry with sweet cherries, lemon, syrup, red berries. Lemon sour mid taste. Slightly tart finish with lingering lemon and almond.
2.3 bottle shared at the June THT. No head. Murky pink/red pour. Smells like cough medicene. Dreadful.
2.1 Bottle at THT. Murky dark pink with no head. Looks like tomato juice. Massive sweet cherries, sour red berries, dough, light puke, soft balsamico. Over medium sweet and light sour. Medium bodied with barely any carbonation. Weird and bad, but better than most Chapeaus.
2.4 Sampled at THT June tasting. Hazy purple with no head. Cherries in the nose, cherries and some cabbage in the taste. Tons of sugar. Medium body with no carbonation.
3.0 Strong essence of Cherries clearly coming though on the nose Pours Deep Red and cloudy much like a Wheatbeer One dimensional taste of Cherry syrup, but enjoyable... I call this a Jewsons beer... Does what I says it does on the tin!
2.3 Bottle, old. Ruby brown pour with white head. Cherry, well cherry cough drops, floral, greenhouse dirt aromas. Flavors are cherry cough drops, some herbal and off notes.
1.6 24/XII/15 - 25cl bottle from Geers (Oostakker) @ home - BB: 20/V/16 (2015-1772) Pretty cloudy reddish brown beer, irregular off-white head, pretty stable, adhesive. Aroma: very artificial cherry candy, yeast, bit dirty. MF: ok carbon, medium to light body. Taste: sweet sugary start, artificial candy, syrupy. Aftertaste: sweet, syrupy, candy.
1.0 (1) Never again. I love cherries - I did not taste cherries in this one - almost like the cork had ruined the lambic. What a shame.
1.7 Bottle poured into a stem glass..reddish/violet with no head..aroma of cherries,grapes..sweet, thin..not very good.
1.3 slight pinkish head. murky mauve colour. aroma is candysweetness, syrup cherries and then some paint thinner like smell, like terpentine or resin from pineneedles. taste is the same as the aroma, sweet, weird taste and afterteste. i had to try it, it was a strong urge, but is this stuff toxic? unlike any other kriek, thats for sure :) bottle 33cl
2.9 Bottle split with my wife. Murky reddish pour with some small lacings. Cherries, syrupy, sweet and pretty one dimensional.
2.6 Another one I had many years ago (at Waagstuk in Antwerp, apparently) of which I found old notes on a beermat - but forgot to enter it here. Deep cherry red, pinkish head, sweet cherry jam, marzipan and sugary lemonade nose, very sweet and cloying in the mouth, sugary but not too ’unnatural’ or industrial tasting, sourish lambic touch far away but drowned in an equally sweet cherry candy aftertaste, though some faint lemony sourishness creeps through. Too bad De Troch had to turn to this type of ’beers’ in order to survive, but if this is what it took to keep this lambic brewery alive till our present day, why not. Not suitable for my palate, though.
2.0 375ml bottle. Just another sickly sweet fruit lambic, sweet cherry syrup, all you need to know.
2.6 25cl bottle bb05/2016, Geers. Pours dull ruby-mauve, not that much head. Aroma of Haribo Kirschen diluted in half-fat yoghurt, funk all blanketed by artificial sweetener. About the same in taste, bit sticky in mouthfeel. Well-chilled this is still enoyable as a dessert or Radler on a formerly cultivated lamic base.
3.5 Bottle, purchased for 1 Euro at the brewery today--freshly bottled. Sweet, fresh red cherry aroma with a little burnt match sulfur (which I often get in lambics) and some sour that doesn’t quite offset the sweetness. Appearance is slightly foggy bright red-orange, with a lasting, lacy, white, cover. Sweet and slightly tangy fresh red cherry flavour that almost ends dry and does have some of that burnt match flavour. Medium carbonation, smooth, sweet but not cloying. Earlier Rating: 3/18/2005 Total Score: 3.4 Cloudy, browish red-purple with a strawberry merangue topping. Sour cherry pervades the aroma with fruity and woody notes: grape, green apple, earthy beets, medicine. Flavour is very sweet, but not sticky and cloying. Sweet and sour cherry up front that leaves patchy/tingly sweet spots inside my mouth. Cherry gives way to malt characteristics and a sweet, clean finish. Light body and not enough carbonation. So far, I think this is the best kriek I’ve had.
3.1 bottle @ Party Source / Bellevue KY --- Cloudy dark cherry amber color, beige rim head, lace that slides back into the drink. Nice aroma of cherry and hay. Taste starts with grain, but is taken over assertively on the swallow by semi-sweet cherry. The cherry drifts through a long finish. This isn’t exactly a Lambic - far too sweet, but the lingering finish comes close.
4.4 At bierkaai from bottle with Luc Like eating a bowl of cherries. Very good!
2.6 Bottle. Red dark hazy. Oaky, slight vinous dark cherry nose. Some marzipan, dark cherries, clean finish. This seems a bit off. The other two Chapeaus this evening were pretty fruity nice, this seems a bit stale and old. Sweets, with some acidity to make it drinkable. The flavour bothers. Old bottle perhaps.
2.3 Bottle at home. Pours cloudy reddish purple with a medium pink head. Aroma of sweet candied cherries. Flavor is moderate to heavy sweet, with this unpleasant super sharp finish. Light bodied with pretty flat carbonation.
2.0 Duft: mås. kirsebær. lidt jorslået. Smag: vanilje. lidt mås. græs. kirsebær
3.4 Fruity aroma. Red hazy with small pink head. Remaining sour and sweet taste with strong cherry notes.
2.6 ath home dark red brown coloured body with a off white head and a sweet fruity cherry aroma a sweet fruity cherry little bitter dry taste with a sweet bitter finish
3.6 37,5 cl bottle with cork from Dranken Geers in Belgium. Fruity smell with cherries, almonds and some cellar notes. Fruity and sweet taste with cherries and almonds. I like sweet fruit beers so this suited be just fine.
2.6 Donkerrood bier met weinig schuim. Smaak is lichtzoet en fruitig, duidelijk kersem, niet onaardig. Etiket is inmiddels gewijzigd.
3.6 Bottle from Bottle Barn in Santa Rosa, CA. Capped, but also with a cork! Pours rather ruddy copper with a transient, slight head. Aroma is cherry, but more tart than sour. Med minus body. This is a little sweet, but not excessively so. It’s a little acid, so I’m going for the Oude Kriek. It’s even a little astringent. But nicely cherry.
Lekker
1.6 250ml bottle (normally I resent bottles this tiny, but in this case it may be a blessing). Pours a murky deep pink, with a small and quickly fading white head. The aroma is not good at all: cheap, sweet kirsch and overdone boiled vegetables. Very light sourness up front is soon overcome by noxiously over-sweet cherry and a vaguely medicinal flavour. The finish merely tastes like cheap kirsch. Tastes like the champagne in Soho bars, if you know what I mean. Definitely the worst lambic I have had. As a final point, who releases two different products with exactly the same name and label? I had to check the fine print of the ingredients list for sugar to determine that my bottle was in fact the sweetened version.
2.0 Smells like ash and distant cherries. Aubergine color, murky, bit lazy sparkling, ring of lacing like bubbles and lonely islands of foam on top. Overly sweet, slightly sour, artificial feel, hard to think this would be made from cherries, medium long finish, left with sticky feeling. Nah...not nice, too sweet and artificial. Re-tasting: have to add to notes that ugly vegetable like notes are there also... but I would not make food from these vegetables.
1.2 Red colour, almost no foam. Low carbonation. Very sweet fruit beer. Aroma of cherry’s with a lot of sugar and artificial sweeteners. Cloying sweetness. A lot of limonades are better!
