4.3 A big pillowy, sustained white head on a yellow straw body. A fresh and engaging nose features citrus and floral hops, sweet malt and grain. This beer is a study in fresh, well balanced tastes. Understated Belgian yeast with a banana accent, lemon, pineapple and green apples, floral hops, sweet bready malt and a touch of cloves all blend well into a refreshing profile. Solid effervescence, a medium body and a slick but not cloying mouth feel are assets.
3.9 Very solid. Fresh and citrusy, bright yellow/straw color. Perfectly white fluffy head. Lots of tropical fruit aromas.
4.7 Bottle from LCBO: massive, creamy head that expands and lasts, and produces an excellent lace. Golden colour. The nose is grain, malt, ripe fruit, and hops with some clove, spice, and yeast. The taste is a conjured complexity of fermented pear and pineapple with a somewhat herbal character. Grains and malts make up a backbone that offers sweetness upfront and subtle bitterness in the finish. Slick mouthfeel, and a high alcohol profile that is well hidden. Robust yet pleasantly smooth and balanced. Enjoyed it with Thanksgiving fare. Exquisitely crafted ale that?s a must have for anyone?s personal reserve.
3.6 750ml bottle from Saveur-Biere. Oravankolo tasting. Clear yellow body with a big white head. Fruity, yeast, some booz. Okay.
4.0 Just an all round quality beer. This beer is good anytime, with practically any type of food.
3.5 Drank w Matt after Dani’s birthday. Creamy hazy beige, slightly dull but with a massive pillowy fluffy white head. Smells of woody bitter hop, musty yeast, moderate spicy grainy malt, fermented pear and apple, light clove. Taste is very deeply bitter, woody grassy wheat, yeasty and lightly peppery. Body is stony and bitter, frothy wet spicy grainy slightly fizzy finish. Lots of stony bitterness to complement the yeast and spicy malt. This bottle didn’t taste too fresh - or just muddy flavour of the yeast?
3.5 750ml bottle (4/2016 I think) from Gatineau Broue Ha Ha at home in HK. Hazy golden pour with very big puffy dense head with lots of structure. Aroma is not that strong - maybe the beer isn’t super fresh? - bitter Belgian notes. Taste is bitter, spicy, sweet grain, stone fruit - more sweet than tart. Very balanced and certainly, as others note, doesn’t seem like it’s 10% despite the boozy finish. Not as hoppy as I expected unfortunately, and not a style I tend to enjoy, but a nicely balanced very elegantly crafted beer.
3.6 750 ml bottle. Bottled on 2014/11/11. Thanks Timo A. for sharing! Clear golden color with a small white head. Belgian yeast, sweet malt and mild spices in the aroma. Hops, Belgian style yeast, freshness, sweet malt and spices in the flavor. Strong flavor. Lagery. Some sweetness in the aftertaste.
Formidable.
4.0 Hazy, yellow orange body, gigantic white head. Very lively. The aroma is warm, with subtle berries. The taste is amazing. Very balanced and not overly hoppy.
4.0 Bottle from LCBO. Bottled Dec 2015. Pours almost all creamy white foam at first, then a clear bright golden body starts to appear. Head retention good, lace too. Nose and flavour of citric biscuits and a warmer stone fruit tonality, it’s so nicely balanced between mellow sweetness and bitterness, it’s so smooth without veering into any extremities. Carbonation, body, palate - all lovely. All in all nothing exceptional, nothing too fancy, but oh my how simply good this is... I downed the whole 750 ml during 2 hours without even noticing : /
4.1 Hazy straw color with powerful subtle activity. Super foamy white 4 finger expanding island head, lasting around 20 minutes, with strong legs. Aromas of sweet malty grains, citrus, and a little vinous. Flavors of lemon, apple, pear, caramel, floral and herbal spices. Pleasant sweet grainy biscuity feel with a nice citrus sharpness. Balanced taste and not too boozy. Slick medium body with perfect carbonation. Well intensified medium strength finish of short length, ending with a clean sharp citrus and slightly spicy noble hops feel. Overall a very good craft with a super fresh taste of delicious complex flavors, while the nose is a little faint. Very easy to drink and quite treacherous.
4.0 2016/04/19 - Pours a hazy, yellow honey colour with a thick, foamy, white head that slowly reduces and leaves ample lacing. Aroma is amazing; Belgian yeast, banana, cloves, pear, tropical fruits, grass and a hint of butter (not unpleasant). Taste is cloves, doughy yeast, banana, pineapple, pear, peach, spicy hops and light alcohol. Mouthfeel is medium and silky with smooth carbonation and a finish that is slightly drying and mildly warming. I can't believe that it has taken me this long to try this beer. Exceptionally balanced while being complex and masterfully hiding the ABV.
4.3 Wow.
3.9 On tap at Cara B. Golden colour with white head. Malt, grass, hops and yeast aoma. Sweet, grass, malt, yeast and fruity taste. Medium body
4.2 75cl bottle. Light hazy color. Thin persistent white head. Medium sweetness and bitterness. Aroma is super fruity, spicy, malty. Super balanced. Where are the 10%?
4.3 Surprise treat from Mrs Tiki this evening. Decants a misty golden with beautiful serious layers of foam across the surface. Pungent aromas promise fresh flavour goodness. Grapefruit, bubblegum & lemongrass. Pine needles shine from the indulgent hops. Fresh dough, perfume, champagne. Fantastic balance. Subtle swirls of flavour. Dreamy mouthfeel. Alcohol is present but almost buried in the tasty goodness. My buddy Hippyhop nails it in his review when he suggests you have two options upon opening the bottle: share it with a friend or drink it solo & ascend to the heights a serious buzz. I’m working the latter option.
4.1 Pours cloudy honey with a creamy white head. Aroma notes include apple, pear, banana, clove, and yeast. Tasting notes include apple, pear, peppery yeast, and a dry finish. Fantastic!
3.5 750ml bottle (thanks martjoobolut). Clear golden color. Small size, white head, stays. Malty, sweet, perfume, dough, some buttery notes in aroma. Perfume, cookies, malty, sweet, spicy hops in taste. Sweet malts, perfume and spicy hops in aftertaste. Medium carbonation. Alcohol is quite well covered. Nice one.
3.8 Bottle, shared by Mart. Clear golden yellow, medium white head. Nose is sweet, shortbread, yeast, fruit, hops, mild perfume. Flavor is more shortbread, mild yeast, fruit, sugar, pineapple, grassy notes in the finish with warm alcohol. Fizzy palate, but the flavors feel creamy. Nice.
3.8 Bottle (from saveur bier), 2014 vintage. Pours golden with whiteish head. The head stays for some time. Aroma is sweet, honey, fruits, citrus, candy, perfumy. Flavor is sweet, bitter and slightly sour, fresh fruits, apples, sugar, malt. Carbonation is rather high. Finish is intense dry bitter with warming alcohol and sweetness. Overall: very nice.
3.8 Bottle share at RBB. Pour is very cloudy yellow with a small white head. Flavor and aroma of pale malt, belgian yeast, sugar, and crackers. Finish is similar with a tad of booze.
5.0 75 cl bottle, served in snifter. Pours dim hazy golden with green tones. Head is white and doesn’t last too long. Nice lacing though. The nose is fantastic: intense aromas of ripe fruit (peach, apricot, mango, melon, grapefruit, pineapple, passionfruit, lemon) accompanied by sweet scents of biscuit, vanilla, cinnamon, caramel... There’s also a sub-layer of other luscious odors: honey, brioche, herbs... Incredibly complex. What about the mouthfeel? Let’s see: creamy, very soft, silky and with a carbonation so soft I’d describe it as velvety. Round flavors, all of them present and well balanced, with a great bitter long finish that lasts for more than two minutes. An amazing ale, congratulations to the brewers.
4.1 75cl bottle all for myself :) ...the beer looks good, well carbonated with a big head. Aroma is spicy, peppery with fruity esters like peach, abricot, some banana, apple ...perfect. It has also traces of acetaldehyde and phenolic aromas but in the perfect, loved by Belgian strong ale drinkers like me. With a first sip the carbonation is confirmed to be strong but the body is creamy. Flavors are strong and each sip is warming. Really good one.
4.6 Pale yellow translucent white with a nice foamy head that leaves a good mark on the glass while dissipates. The smell is slightly sweet, with hints of biscuits, grapefruit, pineapple, grass, pine, hay and lemon zest. The palate spectacular balance between sweet and sour, with new notes of cookies, white bread, grapefruit, kumquats, pineapple, mango, dry soil, hay, lemon zest and hints of alcohol. Soft feeling while stout, slightly dry.
3.4 [1/30/16] Bottle sample at the Encomium bottle share, after RateBeer Best awards ceremony at Hyatt Vineyard Creek Hotel in Santa Rosa. Thanks everyone who shared bottles! Hazy yellow. Fruity, flowers, citrus, earthy spiciness. Dry, bitter hops.
4.2 Typical belgian strong ale but in its class one of the best I have ever tasted. Contains vanilla, banana and citrus and forest fruits. Perfect balance between sweetness and bitterness and between malts and hops. Smooth mouthfeel. Alcohol hardly noticeable. Very very good.
4.1 Bottle at the Rate Beer Awards Festival Bottle Share. Thanks to JulienHuxley for finding me to share. Bright, crisp hops in the nose, along with Belgian yeast, lemon, citrus, dough. Flavor is sweet orange and lemon, crisp malt, creackers. Lightly yeasty, with solid bitterness and great lemony fruit. A great New World Belgian Strong. Glad I finally got to try it. Why can’t more North American brewers do Belgian like this?
