3.7 @ Havregatan 20230402. Bottle (330 ml) from Systembolaget. Yeasty, fruity and spicy with straw, medium body with an oily texture. The finish is dry with alcohol.
3.8 Unclear golden color, large beige head. Aromas of yeast, alcohol, bananas, citrus, marzipan and pepper. Taste of alcohol, yeast, pepper, bananas and slight citrus.
2.4 Taste and aroma of malt, hops and yeast. An alcoholic bomb. Follow me @ Kung av öl @ Facebook and Instagram for more pictures and ratings.
3.0 Yeast and some spicy floral scents in the aroma. Spicy taste, saffron bread, slight cardamom.
3.8 4 finger white head, yellow body. Nose: Yeast, banana, cloves, white bread and herbal notes. Taste: Yeast, banana, white pepper, cloves, citrus notes, herbal notes, white pepper, white bread and funk notes. Semi-long ending with low bitterness.
4.2 Poured with a large foamy head. Lovely aromas of citrus and hops, witch also is reflected in the taste. Very cozy beer, great for evenings in the spring.
3.5 330ml @ Ryan's. Appearance: hazy straw with a white head. Aroma: Belgian esters, some peppery notes and booze. Taste: along the same lines, full-bodied, finishes with some booze, slight bitterness, and Belgian esters. Overall: ok.
3.8 Poured from 330mL bottle (bb 06/2025). Hazed gold with full white head. Belgian yeast, coriander, light underlying hopping, feint pepper. Quite nice.
3.4 Bevuta in bottiglia da 33 a casa del Califfo Aroma fruttato esotico, fresco Colore giallo dorato leggermente torbido, schiuma discreta Gusto alcolico, erbaceo, un po' forte cgpr
3.5 Sampled at Max's Belgian Fest 2023. Pours a murky gold with a cap of white head. Nose has candy, light booze, clear grain. Flavor is honey and grain and candy. Balanced, even with some boozy finish.
3.3 Bottle (L22-541). Head is initially large, frothy, rocky, white, fully lasting. Body is dark yellow. Aroma is lightly malty (toasted grain), lightly hoppy (herbs), lightly yeasty (basement), with a note of alcohol, plus light notes of peppercorns, wet concrete, and alcohol. Flavor is moderately to heavily sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly sweet, lightly acidic, moderately bitter. Medium to full body, velvety/watery texture, lively carbonation, heavily alcoholic. Sadly it has more alcohol than it can bear, so it comes off rather harsh in that regard. Kinda like the White with a big splash of vodka added, which doesn't help things in any regard, and only hurts. Still fairly decent overall (it certainly looks great), but Chimay White is more enjoyable overall.
4.8 One of the best beers in the world. So rich, so balanced, so relaxing, so energizing. Talk about a beautiful head! So creamy you could eat it with a spoon. Rich hoppy aromas, lovely light floral notes, sweet smell of banana, spicy notes of coriander seeds. Absolutely stunning in the mouth, with exquisitely balanced bitterness, richness, sweetness and acidity. Full-bodied, rich and cream-like texture. Warmth from alcohol keeps the spices at bay, prevents it from becoming overpowering. The only thing I miss is a tad more carbonation, not much fizz going on. But apart from that, this is an excellent beer in every respects. Pairs magnificently with spicy creamy food: basically anything with cream/coconut milk and chili! Mussels, scampi soup.
3.9 Pours a semi-transparent golden yellow with thick, white head. Some bready aromas. Taste is heavy alcohol with hints of fruit. A pronounced lack of balance - even considering the high gravity. Of course it still works, but this has been to be pointed out. Finish is much smoother with some melon, coriander/spice and fading alcohol.
4.2 Aroma di frutti chiari, lievito belga e spezie. In bocca complessa con sentori di frutti chiari, lievito belga, biscotto, crosta di pane. Finale speziato persistente. Molto buona.
3.7 Bottle. Unclear golden with a beige head. Fruity and yeasty aroma with cilantro notes. Sweet flavour with a herbal bitterness. Alcohol present as well.
4.5 Pours a very clear pale golden color with a huge & well retained head with a nice lacing on the glass. It just looks as golden and lovely on the bottom & as fluffy & pillowy on the top as a great Belgian beer can only do…. The aroma really takes me back 20 years to when I started drinking Belgian beer… it’s yeasty & spicy… but inviting with mild alcoholic notes. It has a nice ester heavy aroma without going the bubblegum route… it comes off fruity with some apple skin & pear. There is a dominant toasted bread thing that along with a mild yeastiness is ever present with each whiff. The flavor is really pretty clean even for Chimay… yes the estery pear & apricot are there… but they’re held up by a almost bitter toasty bread flavor and a nice presence of noble hops. The beer certainly isn’t bone dry or anything & one could hardly expect that from this house, but it certainly doesn’t give up a lot of sweetness… it has a dry & lingering finish. The mouthfeel of this beer is unquestionably luxurious but at the Same time it’s as bubbly as Champagne & in fact really gives off a similar palate as a well aged vintage Champagne. Honestly I find very little not to love here, it’s basically technically perfect.. but fits in a space so ignored that outside of it’s staunchly traditional roots it almost makes no sense in this awful current market…. It’s so hard to know what to expect with a beer like this, sure the brewery has undeniable pedigree & a consistent level of quality. On the other hand there are those that came before me which speak of an industrialization of this brewery and a certain fall in quality that came with meeting market demand in the late 90s & early 2000s. Alas, I yearn for the times when such critiques held weight with beer consumers… perhaps some of it was too harsh, maybe not. But getting into the minute details of traditional Belgian brewing is so completely lost in this generation. There seems to be an encouraging uptick in many of the tastemakers & hype brewers of the day for keeping a similar longing for this tyle of beer & this type of appreciation… but even the best among those must bend to this daunting and fickle market that has given much in the way of quality… but taken even more in the sense of appreciation, subtlety & tradition. Perhaps I’m waxing too nostalgic sitting here in a hotel in the town where I fell in love with Belgian beer… but this beer hits me square in the ‘nostalgia’ as the younger folks say… really though after years of tasting everything that came across my path, buying & serving beer professionally & everything that goes with the change in palate that all these experiential & psychological occurrences that such an envy produce…. It’s so good to taste a beer that truly captures the excitement & curiosity you felt when it was all new.
3.6 Golden, cloudy with a medium white head. Aroma of fruits, yeast and spices. Light bittersweet with a semi dry fruit and spices ending. Bb 02.2024
3.7 So happy to try a new Chimay, although I wasn’t too impressed with the results. Nice spices twist.
4.0 [Bottle (330ml)] Pours an almost-clear, bubbly hood with a large long-lasting frothy white head. Lots of lacing. Nice Belgian yeast aroma along with spices, sweet fruit, citrus, herbs and more. Flavour follows: Yeasty, sweet, fruity, spicy and herbal. Alcohol is there but still well hidden considering the abv. Medium bodied. Really good stuff.
3.6 330 ml bottle. Pours a dull gold with moderate head. Aromas of grassy Belgian yeast, dull waxy citrus, and wheaty malts. Flavors of fruity esters, banana, coriander, candied lemon, and wheaty malts
3.9 Sample during the "Belgian Beer OGs 01" event on 09/23/2022.
3.4 Smell of malt, straw. Cloudy straw colour, very high white head. Aroma of herbs, belgian yeast, sweet malt, pepper. Sweet. Lively carbon.
4.0 2022/12/03 - Pours a hazy, dirty straw colour with an effervescent, foamy, off white head that lingers and leaves moderate lacing. Aroma is Belgian yeast, bubblegum, sweet bready malts, orange, candied sugar and spices. Taste is more spices, belgian yeast, orange, sweet bready malts, and herbal notes. Mouthfeel is medium with biting of carbonation and a semi sweet, herbal finish. Smooth. As a fan of Belgian blondes, this hit the spot.
