Chris Banker / Insurgente / Stone Xocoveza Mocha Stout

Chris Banker / Insurgente / Stone Xocoveza Mocha Stout

Ingredients: Water, barley malt, wheat malt, rye, yeast, lactose, cocoa, coffee, hops, chilli, cinnamon, vanilla, nutmeg.
The impact of homebrewers on the American craft beer industry has been immense. The comfort level and lack of inhibitors provided by a domestic brewing environment fosters a near limitless brand of experimentation, allowing homebrewers to push te beer envelope to its breaking point. Many of the professional brewing world’s best recipes--from West Coast IPAs to imperial stouts and even sours--began as homespun standouts so spectacular they had to be unleashed on the world in order to improve it.

With this in mind, each year we hold an American Homebrewers Association sanctioned homebrewing competition, the champion of which gets their recipe brewed and distributed nationwide by Stone. This year’s winner, Chris Banker, helped keep us grounded to our homebrewing roots by introducing flavors consistent with our regional apalate. His chocolate, cinnamon, nutmeg, chile pepper, and coffee-infused milk stout was built to mimic the flavors of Mexican hot chocolate, a beloved specialty from our neighbors to the sout, as our collaborators from Baja California, Cervezeria Insurgente, will attest. Layered with tiers of earthiness, spice, and roast, this creamy, semisweet blue ribbon beer confirms that the spirit of the American homebrewer is not only alive and kicking but thriving at an all-time high. [Please stop changing the category to this beer. It is going to be in RIS because it is over 8%, and other ancho chili stouts are not in SHV. -GT2]

4.2 Drinkable, smooth, nice
3.4 Pours dark chocolate with a creamy head that dissipates rather quickly. A slightly bitter chocolate taste with a hint of vanilla & cinnamon. Could not taste the nutmeg, but the pepper taste was just right. There aren't many beers with peppers that I enjoy and my favorite one is no longer available as the Brewery closed. Nice flavored stout and probably would be better if it aged about a year.
3.3 12 oz can rating. I found while this has some enjoyable characteristics, namely pepper, chocolate, vanilla, coffee, it was on the thin side overall. Looking for a bit more kick in this style. The lactose while it smoothens it out, I don't care for it, and don't like it in beer. A bit of a letdown overall.
3.7 Can. Pitch black, medium sizedbeige head, creamy and pretty lasting. Milder chocolate nose, some spices, mostly cinnamon, slight nutmeg, a bit of roastiness. Milder sweetness, quite some spicess in teh finish, nutmeg comes through. Slightly spicy inthe finish and lasting aftertaste. Fuller body, silky. Too much nutmet, but not bad.
3.8 Good solid stout.
4.0 33 cl can, served in a snifter. Poured black with two finger tan head. Aroma: chillies, vanilla, chocolate, cinnamon, sweet roasted malts, coffee, gingerbread. Taste: chocolate, chili peppers, vanilla, nutmeg, cinnamon, coffee, ginger, hot cocoa with chili, caramel, toffee, almond spice, gingerbread, speculaas. Velvety mouthfeel. Medium body with a roasted bittersweet finish with a little spice from the chillies. Very good!

4.3 Great imp stout with perfect blend of adjuncts make this special, taking the beer unmistakably in the Mexican hot chocolate direction without losing its soul to sugary sweetness.
3.5 Dark black color without head. Strong and bitter coffee, some licorice aroma.
3.6 Can, 0.355l. Murky deep brown, almost black pour. One finger frothy brown head, short lasting. Medium lacing on the glass. Sweet and spicy nose, strong cinnamon notes, nutty, somewhat fruity background. Medium body, soft carbonation, refreshingly fizzy. Chewy texture with slight creaminess to it. Nice mouthfeel overall, perhaps a bit lighter than expected. Roasty bittersweet taste with a spicy kick. Aroma of coffee, chocolate, cinnamon. Vanilla, molasses. Nutty, earthy notes. Spicy peppers. Lingering roasty bitterness that slowly builds up. Sticky. Medium lasting finish, dry, bitter and spicy. Interesting beer to try.
4.0 12 fl oz can (yup American). Pours an opaque almost black beer. Solid body & smooth, massive malt backbone plus the 8.1% ABV and a myriad of flavours. I got chocolate, some heat from the peppers & hints of spice. Could be too much but they have done well to meld it all together. Fine & complex imperial stout.
4.3 Can @ home. Clear dark brown colour with a frothy, long lasting, cappuccino head. The nose is intense Christmas spices: cinnamon, nutmeg and a zesty note with roasted malt. Remembers me the swedish gingersnap biscuits (thanks IKEA!). Taste is dark chocolate, spices and a light vanilla and roasted flavor in the end. Medium to strong body with a fine carbonation. Personal note: I loved it, is well balanced for winter evenings waiting for Christmas. A pumpkin spice latte for men.
3.8 Pours black with a foamy tan head that persists. Aroma is cocoa and cinnamon. Taste brings in coffee, chocolate malts, and a bit of pepper kick. Very nice roasty aftertaste. Well balanced mouthfeel. Somewhat dry/chalky. Very enjoyable.
Sublieme imperial stout. Uit adventpakket Beerwulf.
3.8 Copenhagen 22/11 2020. 35,5 cl can from Meny, Borups Allé, Frb. F. Stone's characteristic devil head with colorful Mexican patterns in the background on the cab. Pours opaque, dark brown with a mid-sized beige head. Settles as 0,5 cm thick layer of foam covering the surface of the beer. Settles as thin, at places almost transparent layer of frothy foam struggling to cover the surface of the beer. Crawling up the sides of the glass. Substantial lacing. Aroma is intense with a sweet odor mingling with spicy, perfumed notes. Dark chocolate, cake, cinnamon in abundance, sweet spicy nutmeg, mint, vanilla. Hints of coffee. Light carbonation. Medium thick, soft, smooth, a bit viscous texture. Flavor is intense with a strong sweetness followed by a moderate bitterness. Aftertaste is sweet and sugary. Lingering. Finish has a light chili burn. Quite the heavy cake beer with a refreshing chili burn.
3.8 Opaque black color with small tanned head. Aroma has chocolate, cinnamon, coffee and vanilla. Flavors of cinnamon, vanilla, chocolate, coffee and roasted malt.
3.5 0.33 l can at Goblet Beer Store, Zagreb, thanks. Jet black, small head. Lots of cinnamon, nutmeg, apple pie. Black pepper, spices. Alcohol. Chocolate underneath. Light body, creamy. Smooth, slightly hot. There's actually bitterness here. Herbal touch. Burnt touch.
3.9 Bottle at On Top of Santa Barbara Black coloured. Roasted malts, coffee, chocolate, vanilla, a bit spicy. Slightly sweet and bitter. Purchased at Trader Joe's
3.6 33cl Blik van de Bierkoning. Zwart, beige kraag.
3.8 Dark brown color with a thick creamy tan head. Aromas light nutmeg, cocoa, cinnamon, light spice, toffee, slight caramel. Flavors cocoa, light cinnamon, toffee, light caramel, no spice really noticed from the peppers (perhaps a slight ting), faint vanilla. This was canned a year ago or so and likely has some impact on the flavors overall. Medium to high sweetness, not cloying. Rated this on my sons 7th day in the world while on sickleave aka a family vacation. Pretty nice Stout, just not worth the 17 dollars for a six pack.
3.8 Aroma of coffee, chocolate, nuts, wood and some spices. Black with a tan head. Medium + sweet and medium bitter. Medium to full body with average carbonation. Overall a nice Flavoured Imperial Stout.
4.1 deep dark brown, almost black colour, large, dense beige head; aroma and taste of coffee, chocolate, cinnamon, burnt plum jam, and chili notes; great one!
Naso splendiso e in bocca leggermente piccantina...
4.2 Can. Pours black with nice creamy brown head. Aroma is cocoa, coffee, plums. Taste is bitter with cocoa, vanilla, coffee, hops, cinnamon.
