Cigar City 110K+OT Batch #2 I.R.I.S.

Cigar City 110K+OT Batch #2 I.R.I.S.

110K+ OT Batch #2 is an Imperial Stout dry hopped with Mt. Rainier hops and aged on toasted Spanish Cedar. I.R.I.S. stands for India Russian Imperial Stout and while this brew is still all stout right down to its hefty body, it is hopped a great deal more than our standard stout offerings. The extra punch of kettle hops balances the rich chocolate and malt notes and the Mt. Rainier dry hopping adds slight licorice notes while the cedar contributes to a moderately spicy, burnt and bitter finish. 11.4% ABV. Bottling run 87, 12 bottle cases.
110K+OT Batch #2 I.R.I.S. is a capped 750ml

3.5 Bottle shared at Tkrjukoff’s CCB-day in Sätila. Pours black with a dark brown head. Aroma of alcohol, cinnamon. Ginger, licorice and coffee in the taste. Bitter finish.
3.7 750 ml bottle shared @ tkrjukoffs CCB Day tasting. Pours oily pitch black with a small creamy dark chocolate brown head that slowly dissipates while leaving some trace on the glass. Smell is sweet and almost slightly salty with roasted malts, indonesian soy sauce, resinous wood, minerals, figs, prunes, dark honey, sweet milk chocolate and hints of pine, black pepper and wet leaves. Taste is sweet, bitter, tiny sour and slightly salty with roasted malts, dark roast coffee, bitter chocolate, dark honey, prunes, burnt wood, soy sauce, resin, pine, orange peal, black pepper, minerals, ammonium chloride, figs, dark grapes, alcohol and lemon zest. Mouthfeel is intense, very tiny dry, oily bitter and full bodied. Finish is slightly sweet and bitter with roasted malts, dark roast coffee, bitter chocolate, resinous wood, ammonium chloride, pine and orange peal. Felt a bit all over the place...

4.7 Originally reviewed: 6/23/09. Poured this big bottle into my tulip glass. Now, I haven’t seen any beer pour this thick. Serious viscosity going on. Like dirty motor oil...that was partially frozen. I thought I needed to grab a spoon for this. Huge, over the top, brown head. Not tan, this thing was dark as chocolate. No lacing or rings, no, this was a ’coating.’ The entire glass edge was murked over with the leftovers of the gorgeous head. This is the prettiest beer I’ve ever seen. Smells like leather, raisins, wine, walnuts, coffee, and booze. A smorgasborg of scent. There’s so much going on here, I had to mute the TV because I couldn’t concentrate on capturing it all. I could hardly grasp the depth of scent of this. The mouth is pure silk. Smooth, buttery creaminess coats the entire mouth and flows steadily down the throat. I want to wrap myself up in this. This is a very coffee-forward beer. I wasn’t expecting that. Huge bitter espresso presence. This melds with a roasted nutty flavor that is ever satisfying. The finish is drying and chalky, but I think that’s because I failed to chew after every sip. Thick coffee-goodness. This is, by far, the best RIS I have ever had. This belongs on everyone’s list that loves a good thick RIS. No tasting panel is complete without it. Get some.
4.5 Preamble: This will be my first beer from FL, obtained in a trade from the most excellent Hopscotch himself. Being from the 303, I would never seek out a beer from the SE, yet alone FL. Rating: Deep dark pour with a redish-brown thin head, Reminds me of tenfidy with a lighter head. Get hit with intense sweet molasses in the nose with a coffee nib background. Also gather in come piney hops. This is a tasty balanced brew. A little sweet up front which quickly give way to the cedar and hops and a burnt coffee taste lingers on forever only to be balanced by pineyness on the outsides of the tongue. This is a world class beer.
4.3 75 cl. bottle shared / thx to sebletitje – black with a disappearing white head, smell is sweet with chocolate, slight dark fruits & lots of hops, taste if toffee, pralines, chocolate, caramel, dark fruits, mocha, vanilla, roasted, wood, very slightly smoked, hint of ashy & lots of bitter hops in finish, dry in the finish, medium to low carb, smooth body, quite solid
3.7 14/IV/2012 - 75cl bottle @ home - BB: n/a (2012-376) Thanks to sebletitje for sharing the beer! Pitch black beer, big creamy brown head, pretty stable. Aroma: very fruity, caramel, mocha, red wine, alcohol. MF: good soft carbon, medium body. Taste: caramel first, mocha, cocoa, tobacco, vanilla, dry hoppy. Aftertaste: coffee, ashes, very dry hoppy. Good but not amazingly good.
3.9 Bottle with friends, courtesy of markwise. Thanks Mark! Dark black appearance with a dark brown head. Charred licorice, dark chocolate, woody aroma. Rich, thick, roasty, dark chocolate malty, licorice, burnt, a touch smoky flavor.
3.9 Pours black with a tanned head. Sweet with aromas of toasted malts, coffee, very dark chocolate, tobacco and some cedar wood. Also hints of smoke. Full bodied. Medium to soft carbonation. Dry finish.
4.2 Bottle. Heavy to harsh aromas of toasted, molasses, bitter chocolate and strong coffee for the malt, moderate resin for the hops, moderate dough and earth for the yeast, with tar alcohol, solvent, tobacco, and a mulled wine and fruit cake essence. Head is average size, frothy turning creamy, brown with fair lacing and super sticky legs, and is mostly diminishing. Color is almost black, Flavor starts lightly to moderately sweet and lightly acidic, then finishes lightly sweet and moderately to heavily bitter. Palate is full, creamy with a soft carbonation and a chalky and slightly sticky/chewy finish. The somewhat harsh aroma belies the fantastic smooth and well balanced flavors and palate. You almost want to hold your nose as you slowly sip this enigmatic Imperial Stout.
4.1 Pours rich dark oil black with a beautiful bright cinnamon dark caramel head. The aroma is light roasted coffee notes and sweet developed malts, the hops are gone with the age. The flavor is sweet roasted coffee notes on a smooth medium to thicky delicious body.
4.0 Entering old-rates. 75cl bottle.
3.9 Slightly hoppy aroma, followed by cedar and chocolate. Nice on the palate, it’s aged well. Dryer, not a lot of sweetness, moderate bittering. Pretty good.
4.0 Bottle. Bourbon nose and chocolate nose. Hoppy with woody notes, complimented by a heavy dose of dark roasted malts..
3.8 (750ml bottle. Sparky brought this to the Black Friday tasting). Pours black with an espresso head. Aroma is roast and coffee. Taste is sweet malts and roasty bitterness. Full bodied with a sticky texture. Dry finish. I liked it, but didn’t love it. A little roasty for my tastes.
3.6 750 mL bottle courtesy of Joe Redner. Thanks! Pours a pitch black color with a very dark fizzy brown head. Decent head retention. Big aroma with notes of roasted malts, soy, leather, wood, peppery notes, olives, vanilla, tobacco, toasted malts and faint cherry-like fruit notes. The taste is huge roasted malts, soy, wood, smoke, bitter hops, jerky. Full bodied. Just a huge beer. A little too much for me but still pretty good.
3.9 Bottle. Compliments of Steve from Kickbacks in Jacksonville. Poured into a tulip glass a dark, ominous black color with a nice mocha tan head that collars around the glass. Dark chocolate, roast, slight soy, tobacco in the nose. Lots going on. Med mouthfeel. Leather, spiced oakiness (or is that the cedar?), dark chocolate, coco, ends with a slight bitterness. Some dark fruit. Woody and pepper as well. Overall, I was a fan.
4.1 Botttle, poured a dark black that left some nnice black lacing as I drank it. Aromas of coffee, burnt malt, licorice, chocolate, and hops. You get a mild bitterness, and the licorice stays on the palate. Really well balanced with all the flavors.
3.8 Bottle from jcwattsrugger...thanks John! - Pours black as hell with a thin brown head. Wow...this is thick. Roasty as hell, with tons of ash, with a bit of licorice and sweeter toffee notes in the background. A little metal. Taste is a little sweeter, with an odd lactic note in the middle. Molasses and burnt sugar, with lots of roast. Long sweet finish. Smooth as hell and really thick. Good stuff, and even though I’m burned out on stouts, this was nice stuff.
4.1 750 ml bottle. Pours a thick pitch black oily color with a thick and creamy brown head. Aroma of black licorice, roasted malts, cinnamon, baking chocolate, burnt sugar notes and rotting tree bark. Taste of black licorice, roasted malts, cinnamon, baking chocolate and burnt sugary notes.
4.2 # 1500 Huge thanks to Dmac for giving me this bottle. Pours out black with an attractive two-finger reddish-tan head. Aroma is of dark chocolate, deep roast, raisin, alcohol, spice and plum. Taste is very complex, with a nice thick mouthfeel and still a nice amount of carbonation. Taste is of deep roast, dark chocolate, light coffee, fig, raisin, alcohol, light lingering bitterness with a little bit of spice and black twizzler in there also. This was a very solid brew, too bad they are only making it one time.
3.8 A: The beer pours an almost black color with a fairly sizable tan colored head. S: An incredibly intense roasted malt aroma to the nose which sort of drowns out everything else. Some dark chocolate and a fair amount of coffee is present. A little bit of an espresso character and some burnt sugar. T: More of the same on the palate. Dark roasted malts and coffee dominate the flavor. Some bitter, dark chocolate and a hint of alcohol. Mild licorice and toffee with some molasses sweetness. M: Medium to full in body with a medium level of carbonation. O: I preferred this to the barrel aged version for the more melded flavor and superior mouthfeel.
4.3 From bottle at Holiday Wine Cellar’s private tasting in January 2011. Pours pitch black with a nice creamy dark mocha head which had excellent regeneration. Aroma is very interesting...I do pick up the cedar along with notes of leather, dark chocolate, coffee, and hazelnut. Flavor is very complex with some extremely dark rich chocolate with high cacao content, tarry black coffee, spicy woody cedar, hints of anise, and some brown sugar. The quite high ABV is well concealed. Lingering bittersweet chocolate is nice. Excellent...thanks to Jordan for sharing this amazing brew. (269, 547)
4.0 Reviewed from notes. Pours a nice black color without much of a head but some pretty good heads after the mocha bubbles have faded. Nose brings some really nice notes of chocolate, coffee, and roast. The taste adds in a bit of anise alongside dark chocolate, espresso, and roasted malt. Good body with nice light booze. Drinks well and is a really nice beer. Glad I got to try this one and preferred it to the barrel-aged version. Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 11-08-2010

4.4 Bottle. Pours a pitch black beer with a large and thick chocolate colored head. The aroma is malt, roasted, chocolate, some ash and some fruit. The flavor is malt, roasted, ash and sweetness. The palate is thick and bold with sweetness. Overall a really good and complex beer with a good balance. Fantastic.
3.6 Thanks to Danny for sharing, I think, at EBF Friday night. Very sweet, rich, thick, some tarry quality, a bit of cedar, pretty much a sweet chocolate bomb although not as crazy as Southern Tier Choklat. Ok.
4.1 The beer is black with a finger of dark tan head that’s about one finger, decent retention and good lacing. The aroma is on the lighter side giving off some sweet malts first of chocolate but pretty plain in general. The taste is mostly coffee, but bad coffee week old cold bitter yuckiness. Pretty disappointing here. The start is very poignant to strong. Too much alcohol as well. This is a disappointing effort, might be enjoyable if you’re a huge coffee fan. had this a 2nd time, much better, review isn’t changed but the scores or more reflective of my 2nd experience.
