Cigar City Campeador - Fergus Mor

Cigar City Campeador - Fergus Mor

Fergus Mor: the legendary king of Dal Riata was the founder of Scotland according to Medieval and Renaissance myth. Rulers of Scotland throughout its history have claimed descent from Fergus Mor. A fitting name for this, the first beer in the Campeador series, a barrel aged collaboration of Cigar City Brewing and Knightly Spirits. Fergus Mor is a blend of Big Sound Scotch Ale and Bolita Brown Ale, topped off with a wee bit of Imperial Stout and aged in a Buffalo Trace bourbon barrel. Limited release of 204 - 750ml bottles.

4.0 750ml shared with sideshowe and kubrick215. Pours a dark brown, almost black color with a 1.5 finger beige head that slowly fades into a lasting ring. Splotchy lacing left behind. Smokey, roasted malt aroma with coffee bean, dark chocolate, caramel, toffee and toast countered by dark fruit sweetness.  Hints of grape, plum, fig and other dark berries compliment the roasted robust malt character.   Medium bodied but on the fuller end with a nice balance of deeply roasted and sweeter malts with a touch of dark fruit.  Strong dark chocolate presence with toffee, oatmeal, roasted coffee bean and hazelnut.  Smokey and roasted but not over the top burnt or acrid. Well balanced with stout, scotch and brown ale characteristics all coming through.
4.2 This was really enjoyable. Dark coloured, like a thick opaque Cabernet. Smallish tan head that quickly dissipated. Wood on the nose, I wouldn’t call it strong but it is present and dominate. Very drinkable specially for the level of alcohol, which I did not detect int he flavour. More wood in the flavour but fully complimented by some vanilla and sweet malts with a bit of overly ripened fruit.
3.3 Name: Campeador Date: August 11, 2010 Mode: Bottle Source: Tasting, wabc Appearance: black, creamy beige head, drippy lace Aroma: roast malt aroma, touch of caramel sweetness, light spicyness Flavor: rich chocolate and roasted flavor, lots of bitterness, touch of bourbon emerges at the end Aroma: 6/10; Appearance: 7/10; Flavor: 7/10; Palate: 6/10; Overall: 13/20 Rating: 3.3/5.0 Drinkability: 7/10 Score: *** /4
4.2 Entering old-rates.
4.4 In short: A fantastic woody, nutty, rich and creamy big brown ale of some kind. Wow! How: Bottle 750ml.. Consumed when almost two years of age. Bottle from tytoanderso, huge thanks to my man Tyler The look: Dark mahogany body topped by a small persistent beige head In long: Really enjoyable barrel heavy nose that for once doesn’t smell like bourbon. Plenty of earthy oak barrels with notes of walnuts, rich caramel. Mouthfeel is exceptional, full, very creamy and velvety with plenty of very soft bubbles. Taste is sweet course with creamy fudge, walnuts & cashews, smooth caramel, vanilla, wet wood. Despite being a 10%+ BA beer (and a CCB) this beer is anything but aggressive, it is in fact incredibly smooth. All the flavors coexist peacefully and there is no alcohol presence at all. If only the wood could dry out the beer a bit more this would be a masterpiece as only the apparent sweetness prevents me from giving it a masterpiece score. My favorite CCB so far and by far, and it is actually my first and only “wow!” beer CCB. I conclude most of my CCB ratings by saying that this brewery is overrated but today is different, I’m simply incapable of being cynical right now because this fantastic beer has put me in a wonderful mood. Rainbows are pretty.
3.9 3000th rating. Bottle 19 of 204. Pours dark brown, almost black with brown head. Nose/taste of molasses, graham crackers, raisin, dark fruit, toffee, wood and caramel. Medium body.
3.6 From my limited notes-Nose was filled with alcohol. Taste was dark fruit and sweet toffee malts.
4.0 Huge thanks to daknole as usual! Bottle #82/204 pours red-brown with an off-white head. Aroma shows notes of brown sugar, delhi dates, cocoa powder, hazelnut, bourbon, and vanilla. Flavor shows the same with additional notes of oak, light smoke, roasted malt, and a hint of molasses. Overall body is moderate to full, sweet, and finishes with some nice warming alcohol.
4.2 Bottle 82/204 generously shared by Dak...WOW!!! Murky burnt chestnut with shades of crimson, garnet, and tangerine straight from Sedona’s Oak Creek. Thin eggshell head. Aroma shows tons of caramel, toffee, brown sugar, toasted nuts, and a bit of bourbon. Flavor has notes of vanilla, oak, dark fruit, smoke and chocolate. Still a bit of alcohol but it isn’t distracting. Additionally, this brew is quite sweet but isn’t at all cloying. Glad I had an opportunity to try this one!!!
3.9 Smells like sweet malts, almost more brown ale than scotch ale. The beer pours dark brown with a small off white head. The flavor is scotch ale and brown ale blended perfectly, both styles coming out to shine well on a nice body.
3.9 Bottle shared by bmanning--#24/204. Served in a snifter. Pours a medium brown color and is actually quite hazy. Really thin tan head, though it’s fairly persistent with a touch of lacing. The nose is really quite nice with a lot of caramel, toffee, and dark fruits. There is a tad bit of bourbon in the background, though not all that much and it really melds in with the other components. As it warms, even more dark fruits make an appearance. The taste isn’t quite as integrated and the sweetness takes over a bit more. There is still a fairly-strong toffee presence with some dates, though it’s not as fruity as the nose. I really can’t pick out all that much bourbon. The body is medium and is really quite smooth. The alcohol is not really present at all. Even though it was a bit sweet, I found this to be quite drinkable. Thanks again, Ben. Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 01-16-2011
4.3 Pours a reddish brown with a medium tan head. Caramel and toffee notes. Sweet malts. Taste is good but very similar to big sound. Caramel and nuts notes. Palate is good, well balanced and good finish. good heat to it. im very happy to have tried it.
3.9 /Wax dipped bottle number 57/204 thanks to Eric from Boise. 2009 edition. Pours totally black with a medium beige head. The aroma is sweet bourbon, oak, and fruit. The flavor is a massive bourbon treatment, earthy oak and dark roasted malts, dry, the scotch ale is dominant here. Very well done.
3.5 Bottle (#27/204, 2009) shared at the tasting, thanks Appearance: Hazy dark brown with a medium sized beige head and good lacing Aroma: Roasty, smokey and dark fruits Taste: Roasted malts, caramel, dark fruits and vanilla Nice
4.0 Tasting at Papsø Dark mahogany color; small creamy head. Nice combination of caramel aroma and vanilla oak, whiskey, wood, light smoke; dynamic. The body is well structured; strong caramel flavor, quite sweet, with a very pleasant whiskey-Bourbon-vanilla component, and chocolate in the end; the whiskey also leaves an evident alcohol trace. Correct bitterness, the final has A bit alcoholic, but very good.
3.7 Bottle thanks to Kan...A darkish brown, that is weirdly clear. A light tan head that is decent...Malty aroma of toffee, dark fruits, and some bourbon. Almost like a light ba quad, interesting notes...The taste is unique, the bourbon is gone bringing more malt flavors of toffee, chocolate and a little coconut...This is extremely unique and well worth trying.
3.5 750ml bottle, waxed, #97/204, 2009. Pours a murky brown with a small creamy light tan head that quickly goes to a thin film that leaves some lacing. The aroma is peaty, smokey malts and a lot of bourboney alcohol with a little dark fruit and vanilla. The flavor is dark fruits and some sweet caramel, vanilla, and smokey/peaty malts with quite a bit of alcohol in the finish. The mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with low carbonation. Overall, it’s a well made beer. The bourbon is just a bit too much for me. Thanks Solan!
3.5 Sweet booze aroma, sweet and roastiness. The flavor starts with chocolate, dark fruits, brown sugar, then bourbon, roastiness, with a long end. Medium bodied, soft carbonation, very creamy at mouthfeel.
4.3 Bottle @ UDRM. The aroma has caramel, chocolate, dried dark fruits and bourbon, wood. Dark brown coloured with no head. The taste is sweet with sugar/caramel/toffee, bourbon, raisin and great chocolate. Quite full bodied. Nice. Which is an understatement.
3.9 750 ml bottle shared at Derek’s Tasting brought by me. 113 of 204. Pours a murky brownish dark hue, near opaque, some lighter edges with a small frothy tannish head that dies to an ok film, ok lacing. Aromas are touches of orange marmalade, light bitterness, red and dark fruit, raisins, caramel, toffee, rich Bourbon spirit, a touch of heat, vanilla tannins. Sweet, biscuits, brown malts, bread, earthy toffee. Initial is a bit thinned out, a touch metallic moving into red fruit and ark fruit, big toffee and caramel, biscuits, toast. Vanilla, a faint touch of cocoa, very bready and malty with warming bourbon, vanilla tannins. Rich red fruit, cherries and raisins, vanilla, twisted toffee and caramel, biscuits. Fairly sweet with kisses of oaky vanilla, wet wood, and touches of Bourbon spirit. Finish is a bit mellow, a-ok. A bit faded body wise, but tasty, the bases do indeed follow through
3.7 Bottle shared by Adam, thanks! Poured a hazy dark brown with a grayish brown head that dissipated to the edges. Aroma had a pretty present bourbon note as well as light fruit dark grains, roasted malts and a bit of chocolate. Flavor began with sweet dark grains and bread, chocolate and roasted malts which were joined by a growing bourbon note.
4.2 Pours a deep brown with a small head. Aroma hits with lots of bourbon, oak, caramel, vanilla, toffee and some light chocolate notes. Flavor is loaded with bourbon, vanilla, caramel, fruit, chocolate. Very nice.
4.2 Sampled at a Freetail release, bottle share. I missed the bottle #. Poured a dark brown body with a creamy tan head that left great lacing on the glass. Very leggy as well. Aromas of bourbon, milk chocolate, dark fruits, vanilla and plums. Flavors are roasty, bakers cocoa, dark fruit sweetness, caramel, carmelized sugars and some bourbony alcohol. Medium to full mouthfeel--Chewy. I love these big, blended CCB beers!!!
