3.5 Sample @ CBC. Nice head with good duration. Color is is golden. Aroma and taste are fruits, flowers, wood, apricot, spices, malt and hops.
3.2 Bottle @ CBC. Pours hazy golden with a white head. Aroma of malt, yeast, little grass, heavy cedar. Flavor is malt, yeast, grass, light citrus, cedar but better balanced than aroma. Medium body, soft carbonation, spicy finish. 040513
3.4 Sampled at CBC 2013. CLear orange, medium white head. Strong cedar aroma, some peppery and spicy notes. Medium bodied, medium to high carbonation. Semi dry, meduim bitterness.
3.4 Pour is clear orange with off white ring. Nose is heavy citrus and grapefruit with a faint note of cedar and barely any Saison. Taste has more farmhouse to it with a strong grapefruit and citrus backbone. Fairly sour dry finish on a fuller syrupy body.
3.9 Strong cedar wood aromas with citrusy notes and fruits. Taste is peach, mango, cedar wood, vanilla, herbal notes.
3.1 Bottle. Pours unclear amber with a minimal white head. Aroma is dominated by cedar wood, grapefruit, lemon, orange, perfume and pepper. Taste is medium sweet, light+ bitter, and light sour. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is lively. Finish is dry and woody astringent.
3.3 Botella. Cloudy orange, small white head. Lots of cedar in the aroma, parfume, fruit. Good mouthfeel Cedar indeed, parfume fruit grape fruity flavour. Too much cedar.
3.1 Bottle. Hazy golden with a quickly diminishing white head. Leaves little lacing. Aroma is pepper, cedar, tangerine, grapefruit, light booze, light fermented grass. Taste is medium sweet and light bitter. Medium body, oily texture, soft carbonation. Grapefruit astringency in the finish along with cedar notes.
4.0 Hazy gold with a fluffy white head. Not the gusher that the previous one was. Funky yeast and lemon aroma. The flavor starts with a tart bite then mellows out as the sweet fruitiness comes on. The finish is dry and fruity.
4.0 THX! To Sebletitje. 75 cl. bottle sampled. Aged on Spanish cedar wood (apparently they stuff they use for cigar boxes to age the stuff – fitting) saison with coriander and ginger. Pours bright orange with a touch amber, oakish, white head. Nose is very unique, I suppose that this is Spanish cedar, its huge, sweet fruity wood, soft, juicy wood, fruity, berries, light sour tang pure wood, ginger, tad sharp,… wow this is new. Picking up lots of ginger in the taste, I assume what is the cedar, stringy, juicy wood, very sharp, hard to describe, sour fruits & more-so sour berries, wild berries, orange peel, fresh grapefruit juice, hint of pear, sour pine, peel,… This is a bit much to take in, I am not even too certain whether I like it or not, bit hard to tell, it is more interesting. Clean, sharp body. Interesting stuff.
3.8 light amber ... thin white lacing ... soft peppery cedar wood ... juicy fruits nose ... juicy fruits ... soft malts ... lemon ... orange ... lime and that lovely peppery cedar wood...
3.6 Bottle. Golden with white head. Massive peppery woody aroma, some citrus fruit and a little pissiness. Taste is very woody, peppery and a little citrus, grapefruit in the finish. Slightly sweet and sticky again. Nice
3.6 75cl bottle. Thanks Sean (Melody Brewing) for hauling this one back from Philly.
3.5 Hazy golden with a tiny white head. Spicy and fruity tones. Peppers, fruit and bitterness. Medium to full body with a long bitter finish.
3.4 @basunen: stor kryddig doft med tydlig inslag av cederträ. Smaken är mycket kryddig men även mycket söt. God men kanske lite jobbig i längden.
3.5 750mL bottle. Poured medium golden with a short, well-retained, whitish head. The aroma picked up lots of floral and peppery cedar notes over mixed lighter-skinned fruits and bready malt.. fruit skins and floral notes on the strong back of the nose. The flavor found warm bread and fruity notes at the core, with tangy fruit skins and bitter floral notes around.. peppery and yeasty on the long finish.. good stuff in there, but it needed some subtlety. Medium-plus bodied with moderate carbonation on the palate.. just too big for my liking.
2.9 Hazy off orange pour whispy white head. Peppery earthy bready lemon zest and alcohol on the aroma I’m thinking saison. Nice palate lightly creamy well coated. Odd flavor clearly Belgian yeasts then some dry lemon zests a hint of soapyness some hops that don’t balance the beer well. Not very good.
2.4 750 ml bottle served in a CCB snifter. A: Looks like urine. Thin white head, clear gold body. S: That is some potent cedar. Smells like the inside of a cigar box with a spicy lemon grass and some underlying peppery yeasty. Like with all the cedar aged CCB beers the cedar aging creates a huge imbalance. T: Luckily the cedar is a little more subdued than the nose, but it is still too much apart of the beer. There is a light hop presence with some stone fruit and some back end yeasty notes of pepper and light must. 9% is well hidden M: Light bodied, medium carbonation. Cedar spice in the aftertaste detracts from some of the drinkability. O: As with all the cedar aged CCB beers the cedar is just too much and basically decimates the base beer. A little less cedar aging and the cedar might complimentary as opposed to the leading flavor. Serving type: bottle
3.0 thanks to collin, strong flavors, bitter cedar, tons of Ginger and orange flavors. Strong flavors
3.0 Wow this is well another huge cedar bomb. Reminds me of sniffing bug spray with extra deet. Super huge cedar notes dominate all other nuanced flavor here.
2.5 750mL bottle, sent from LateStart (thanks Jordan), pours a hazy golden with a small white head. Aroma brings out pungent cedar upfront which dominates, a bit of citrus, but not much else – this is all cedar on the nose. Flavour is similar, bringing out prominent cedar notes which dominate, with very light citrus notes. The cedar is monolithic in this, with a light body, leaving strong woody cedar notes. The best of the Dos Costas beers, but still nothing special.
3.7 Lateral tasting with bottles from Lueken Liquors. Funky aroma, the funk stays in the taste and is moderated by some grapefruit and lemon and the wood. Very good very spicy flavour, but you have to tolerate the barnyard. Good drinkability.Full mouthfeel, carbonation significant.
4.2 Tasting three beers of the Dos Costas Oriente series, Cedar, Gapefruit and Lemon, courtesy of Sammy. Cloudy golden colour w/. Tall foamy head. Great aroma of citrus and over ripe fruit. Flavours of jammy fruits, orange zest and grapefruit.
3.6 Name: Dos Costas Oeste Date: November 04, 2012 Mode: Bottle Source: Tasting Appearance: hazy orange, fine white head, drippy lace Aroma: dry spicy aroma, lots of cedar, spicy Flavor: spicy flavor, woody, balanced sweetness, plenty of wood but not too much Aroma: 7/10; Appearance: 7/10; Flavor: 7/10; Palate: 6/10; Overall: 15/20 Rating: 3.6/5.0 Drinkability: 7/10 Score: *** /4
3.6 750 ml bottle acquired from fishingnet. Thanks, Ben. Finally finishing up this series after this one has lingered in the fridge for a long time. Pours a deep orange pour, a kiss of haze, deep pretty glow through the body and edges. A frothy whitish head dies to a small ring and laces small. Aromas are bigger citrus rind, orange and grapefruit, bread dough, wood and cedar with a kiss of spice. Coriander strikes the nose firmly, bready malts, straw, big citrus rind and coriander feel as it settles. It’s not too sweet, the cedar seems a bit faded which from what I can tell is a good thing from early reviews. Initial is medium bodied, a bit lighter with citrus rind, grapefruit and orange oils. Gentle sweetness, dry spice. Cool coriander and cedar come into the middle, a touch tannic as we move into the backend. Lots of citrus rind, much less sweet as a beer than the other versions as I recall. A more dry backend and finish, more cedar, wet wood, and tannic presence back here. The citrus rind really jumps up front, grapefruit and orange, at times. Pleasant. A touch sweet into the middle with firm spice, coriander and yeast that quickly turns into the dry and cedar finish, tannic, but not overrun with the wood as earlier reviews mentioned. I kept this beer for a good long while out of fear of this particular one. The finish is a bit spicy and cedar ridden, but overall, it’s a pretty solid offering. If you haven’t revisited this in awhile, give it a go. Overall, this grabbed the highest rating from me for all 3 bottled wood versions.. I’m pretty surprised at that. But it truly was the best.. Albeit all bottles tried several months apart from each other.
4.0 Backlogged rating (Joe Peesie Beer Porn gathering), thanks Zach: Golden hued with a good lasting head. The aroma has notes of oak, lemongrass, mango, white pepper, ginger, resiny hops and bready malts. The taste has a lovely balance of spice, booze, fruit and bitterness. I like the touch of cedar tannins and overall spicy notes. The mouth feel is lively yet smooth, a tad sticky. Overall a successful brew that i would gladly try again.
3.3 750ml bottle. Poured a hazy golden/yellow color with an averaged sized off white head. Woody, cedar, vanilla, with some spices. Some fruitiness and bread too.
3.1 Bottle at a Ratebeer "sticky floor" tasting, Den Haag. Poured a cloudy orange with a round white head and broken lace. The aroma is of grapefruit. The flavour is bitter pepper and spicy. A tasty and flavourful beer. Not sure I could drink a whole bottle though.
3.4 Hazy orange, off white lace. Bit too much spicy, but also a decent sweaty, fermented fruit and sweaty. Sweet and sharp notes, herbal bitterness. It’s okay. (At Deanso’s tasting)
3.7 Bottle @ sticky floor tasting. Aroma is grapefruit woody madness, lemon, spices, citric acid, slight medicinal. Flavour is woody fruity malty bread grapefruit lemon spicy madness. Too spicy imho.
