Cigar City Hunahpu's Imperial Stout - Bourbon Barrel Aged

Cigar City Hunahpu's Imperial Stout - Bourbon Barrel Aged

Central to Mayan mythology is the story of twin brothers named Xbalanque and Hunahpu, the Hero Twins. After the Twins’ father was murdered by evil deities from Xibalba, his corpse became a cacao tree that spawned our two Heroes. Epic adventures followed, culminating in a journey to Xibalba to avenge their fathers’ death. Vanquishing their enemies handily, the Heroes then ascended unto the heavens where they became the sun and the moon.

Imperial Stout brewed with ancho and pasilla chile peppers, cinnamon, vanilla and cacao nibs aged in white oak barrels previously used to age bourbon.

4.2 Sampled at gregwilsonstl tasting. It pours dark brown with a small tan head. It has a full body with soft carbonation. The rate has smooth roast, vanilla, chocolate, coffee bitterness, dark caramel and heavy richness. Very nice
4.2 Bottle. Pours a pitch black color with a medium dark brown head. A big spicy bourbon nose. Rich, coffee, cinnamon, sweet bourbon. Very complex. Damn good.
4.0 Bottle at Dougs, thanks buddy Pours black with a small tan head, light lacing. Dark malts, chocolate, bourbon, vanilla and cinnamon Good stuff
4.0 Aromat intensywny, dużo bourbonu, wanilii, w tle przyprawy, susz owocowy, nuty palone i lekki sos sojowy. W smaku słodkie tło, susz owocowy, dużo gorzkiej czekolady i kakao. Finisz alkoholowy, z posmakiem czerownych owoców.
4.3 Pours a pitch black coloration with a medium, creamy, dark brown head. Smells of rich, dark chocolate, cinnamon and chili peppers, with a hint of vanilla, oak and quite a hot bourbon note. Taste follows the nose, being dominated by rich, bitter chocolate, roasted malts and spicy chili peppers, with a good amount of vanilla and lighter notes of cinnamon, dark fruits: fig, raisins, some oak and a light earthiness. There's also quite a hot, boozy bourbon note to this. It starts out a little sweet, with the chocolate and vanilla standing out the most, but turns more a lot more bitter and warming in the aftertaste. Finishes with a medium bitterness, vanilla notes, and some heat, both from the chili and booze, lingering in the aftertaste. Smooth mouthfeel with a rich body and low carbonation. This thankfully doesn't have that odd, floral chili note that normal Huna has, the chilies feeling a lot more sharp and spicy. A little less earthy and bitter as well, with more vanilla sweetness and a lot more booziness. slightly richer dark fruit notes as well. Mouthfeel is actually quite a bit worse though, not having quite that thick, almost viscous quality to it that normal Huna has. Still quite smooth though. I actually think that the heat from the chilies and the booze work together quite well to create quite an aggressive character works well with the bitterness and is balanced out nicely by a certain sweetness from the vanilla.
3.5 Keg at Beavertown Extravaganza, Printworks Surrey Quays. Dark and rich, full of dark, roast malt flavours.
3.8 Cigar City Brewing - Hunahpu’s Bourbon Barrel Aged 2017 Imperial Stout Brewed With Ancho & Pasilla Chile Peppers, Cinammon, Vanilla & Cacao Nibs Aged In Bourbon Barrels. AAlkohol: 14,6% obj. IBU: 80 Data butelkowania: 16.08.2017 Kolor: Smoliście czarny, nieprzejrzysty. Mocno grzeją w przełyk i w połączeniu z alkoholową mocną powodują natychmiastowe rozgrzewanie w klatce piersiowej i żołądku. Po kilku łykach człowiek zaczyna akceptować ten stan rzeczy. Huna BBA wcale nie należy do słodziaków. Finisz raczej jest półwytrawny. Ciała jest sporo, tekstura gęsta i oleista. Edit: Po znacznym ogrzaniu trunku papryczki stają się bardzo intensywne i powoli zaczynają przykrywać inne składowe. Wysycenie: Niskie. Podsumowanie: Samo piwo nie zdjęło czapki z mojej głowy, nie wyrwało mnie z butów, ani nic z tych rzeczy. Przyznam szczerze, że liczyłem na dużo więcej. Aromat spełniił swoją rolę w 100%, to jednak smak zawiódł. Zbyt dużo tych papryczek, w połączeniu z nazbyt mocnym alkoholem prowdzi to do mało przyjemnego (jak dla mnie) wytrawnego finiszu. Z miłych rzeczy to wspaniała tekstura, mocny bourbon, dużo cynamonu i czekolady.
4.4 Bottle. Black pour with a brown head. Rich fudgey chocolate, boozy, some coffee notes, thick and rich. Amazing.
4.0 750ml bottle at Kump’s during the Pink session. Vintage 2017. Pours a very dark brown with the same head. Aroma is very sweet with spices, pepper, some chocolate, and bourbon. Taste is quite aggressive - spicy, boozy, roasted malt. It's fairly overspiced for my taste, but still good.
4.3 From bottle, lot’s of cinnamon in the nose, dark chocolate, oak, vanilla, and light roast, the cinnamon overpowered the entire beer. Light bourbon sweetness. Expected a lot more

4.5 Bottle at El Catador Tasting, Odense. It pours opaque black with a reddish brown creamy head. Slick and chewy. Loads of roasted malts in this. Bourbon, cocoa, chili, vanilla and light coffee. Huge complexity here. The flavor is super roasted. Sweet cocoa and vanilla. Light chili and only a whiff of cinnamon. Really a top notch brew here.
4.1 Bottle. Pours Black with a tan head. Aroma of bourbon, vanilla, velvet, roasty, light coffee, tad of druer fruits, light toffee. Taste is sweet, vanilla, light Spice, choco, light coffee, roasty, loads of Dark chocolate. Heavy but balanced.
4.6 Single BA edition is also stellar. Lot's of vanilla, oak, spice and some heat. Amazing brew. As I said in the DBH review, the base beer is already stellar and barrel aging it really makes it extra special.
4.4 750ml bottle pours out black topped with a brown head. Nose is nice bourbon barrel notes vanilla big roast coffee chocolate. Tatse is more of the nice big roast coffee rich milk chocolate sweetness and vanilla bourbon barrel.
4.4 Pours black as night with a fairly tall deep tan head that drops quickly. Aroma of rich bourbon up front but immediately balanced by ancho chilli, cocoa, vanilla, hot damn if this isn’t one of the best aromas I’ve ever experienced! Taste is rich bourbon fiery, roasty, chocolate, sticky sweet, honestly a bit much. The chilli finish helps but still too sweet. Rich and creamy body with soft carbonation.
4.9 Bottle thanks to El Cat and Homer! Pours opaque black, small dark brown creamy head, dissipates slowly, nice lacing. Aroma is wonderful, bourbon, cocoa, hints of vanilla, dark chocolate, cinnamon, oak. Flavor is quite sweet, light bitter, a bit of pepper spice remains, other spices mingle with the bourbon and give a very deserty, yet drinkable, feel. Touch of marshmallow. Full body, creamy mouthfeel. One of the best. I am kicking my own ass that I was not on this one in the second chance sale earlier this month. Dumas.
4.3 Pours a jet black oily cookie with an espresso crema coloured foam. Aroma is busting whiffs of charred malts, big cinnamon, green chilli, light soy, molasses and light hints of vanilla. The taste is intensely roasted and the taste is initially big on soy, ashy bitter roast and cinnamon with not much bourbon coming through. This needs 15+ minutes to unfold the sweeter notes. After a good amount of time, you actually do get some vanilla, light chocolate and sweet cinnamon working well together. Very different beer after 20 minutes and it did become enjoyable but it just took too long and even then the barrel didn’t come through much. I was really crossing my fingers but as with many other CCB beers of recent times, this was just overly roasted, soyish, charred and ashy.
3.7 From notes. Enjoyed at a tasting with ebone1988 and Gus on December 10. 750 mL bottle. The pour is a nice darker black with a thin film of dark brown head that actually makes an audible fizz as it disappears. The aroma is full of alcohol. There is a light chocolate and a good bit of pepper that opens up with it, but the sharpness of the bourbon really dominates. There is a good oaky barrel backbone to it as well, which isn’t terrible. It does sweeten up on the back end. The flavor is much of the same. The chocolate and pepper really come through behind the bourbon and a strong oak presence. There is a hint of sweeter malt and a kiss of vanilla on the finish, but the alcohol drives this one from front to back. The mouth feel is medium to heavy bodied with a sharper carbonation and a lingeringly alcohol-dominated spicy chocolate finish. This one is a bit disappointing for what I was expecting and/or hoping for. Not bad, but lacking. 7 4 7 4 15
