3.2 Pours a dark brown with a tall tan head. Dark roasted malt nose with a pretty strong hop character being noted. Smells a lot like a black IPA. Drinks a lot like one too. Except that the malt presence is more prominent. The mouthfeel is as if there is a thin layer of air separating the surface of the tongue and the beer. Gets mildly astringent.
4.5 Bottled 11/2/2015 enjoyed 1/13/2016 in a snifter. Look - Aggressive pour lead to a couple fingers of medium to large bubbled tan head. Body is dark brown. There is quite a bit of lacing. Head settles to more than a ring. Smell - Chocolate. Char. Toast. Coffee. Bubblegum. Hop. Taste - Bitter with coffee, chocolate, and hops. Toasty. Slight peppermint. Feel - Rips tongue in a couple ways. Not boozy. Well carbonated. Dry Overall - If I didn’t know better I’d think I was drinking a Three Floyds porter. Bitter chocolate. Bitter hops. Even not being in the mood for this, it is still good.
2.9 Bottle. Head is initially average sized, frothy, light brown, mostly lasting. Body is dark brown to black. Aroma is moderately malty (chocolate, caramel, roasted grain), lightly hoppy (grapefruit), with notes of vanilla and tobacco. Flavor is moderately to heavily sweet, moderately acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly to moderately sweet, moderately acidic, moderately bitter. Medium to full body, watery/velvety texture, lively carbonation, lightly to moderately alcoholic. Aggressively hopped? Hmmm, not really getting that. Simple nose...it’s not got much by way of hops in either the nose or mouth, in fact. It’s quite twangy/sour, too. Pretty difficult to enjoy.
3.8 Almost black pour with tan head and lace. Aroma is coffee and roasted malt. Flavor is coffee, roast malt, a hinto chocolate. Medium body with good carbonation.
3.7 Tap at Cigar City. Aroma is strong pine and flowers with light cocoa and coffee. Tastes moderately bitter. Roasted coffee and pine mostly. Somewhat thin body. Tastes like a thinner black IPA but still smooth and crushable. Solid.
3.2 Bottle. The pour is a dark brown. The aroma is that of almonds and dark bitter fruits. The taste is true to the style, a nice drinking porter. This one seemed to be almost near turning with a little bit of sour coming through.
3.5 From site: An aggressively hopped robust porter named for the Cuban national hero who also spent a significant amount of time in Tampa and gained prominence in Latin American literature from the poetry, essays, and publications he contributed to in his lifetime
3.6 Bomber thanks to homer 321, thanks man! Black slighty thin pour with a thick layer of creamy white head. Aroma is nutty roasy, pine, and citrus, smells very much like a black IPA of sorts. Taste is coffee roast up front followed by some hoppy pine citrus bitterness, finsh is bitter coffee that lingers on the palate, medium bodied, lots of carbonation. Nice brew, very hoppy for a porter, but tasty all around.
3.6 Bottle to glass. Pours a deep brown color with a tan head. Aroma is a light toasted malts, touch of bitterness, piney hops. Flavor has a nice brown toasted malt character, touch of piney hops in background. Medium body with a lingering bitterness and toasted malts. Interesting brew. Tasty.
3.4 Poured at brewery. Lots of coffee and dark malt notes on the nose and palate.
4.0 Bottle. Black pour with tan head. Smokey, roasted, chocolate, herbal and pine aromas. Chocolate, smoked, roasted and light herbal and pine flavors.
3.8 Poured from a tap. Dark brown color, medium off white head. Medium tangy malt aroma. Medium body with a citrus malt flavor and a medium finish.
3.7 Poured from 12 oz. bottle. Opaque, true black with a 2-finger tan head and excellent lacing. Aroma of dark roasted malt, chocolate, black figs, coffee and some citric notes. Taste of chocolate, citrus, roasted coffee, dark roasted malt and licorice. Intense roasty flavors are matched by an equal dose of citric hop flavor. Medium body and medium carbonation. Hoppier, darker and more intensely flavored than your typical porter.
4.5 Very hop forward with robust chocolate malts, roasted barley and coffee beans. Very smooth overall!
3.0 Pours a dark brown with off-white head. Coffee, dark roasted malt, and some cocoa on the nose; follows onto the palate. A little thin on the palate, just an average porter.
3.5 Crushed with Jakebra Pours a dark, almost black color with a small head and some lacing on the glass. The aroma is roasty & chocolaty with a light ashiness... sort of faint in general no matter how much I swish the glass, s’nice though. The flavor is big on chocolate and raisin. It’s plenty bitter and pleasantly sweet. The alcohol is noticeable but mild. neat
3.7 Pour is black with tons of tight tan head and a thick lacing. Nose has a robust malt up front of milk chocolate and roasted malt. Aggressively hopped citrus behind and hop resin behind. Taste is heavier roast, still fairly rich and malty, some citrus hop and a hint of an herbal note. Silky smooth body with an assertive carbonation and a fairly dry chalky finish.
4.1 At home on a Friday before heading out to a pool party. Pours black with big foamy grey head. Aroma is dark chocolates, nice bourbon-like alcohol note, lightly roasted malted barley, slight raspberry fruit note that come from the sweet aero writ edge to the beer. Mouthfeel is soft and creamy, like whipped cream that disappears when it hits your tongue. Taste is soft dark chocolate, more of that raspberry sweetness, a little marshmallow, heavy malt notes, with a thin body. Finish is long, the malty dark chocolate note sits on the pallet. A very nice stout-like porter at 8%. Would bang again.
4.1 Ridiculously rich, chewy, chocolatey brown coloured body with a thick, three centimetre tall deep brown head and only the slightest bit of light coming through when held up to a light, around 95% opaque. Aroma of rich milk, chocolate, coffee, cherries, vanilla, oak and tons of caramelised sugars. Full-bodied; Very rich chocolate and roasted malt flavours with a deep milky and caramel finish showing some oak and dryness at the tail end. Aftertaste shows a good complexity with some alcohol, hops, cherries and more vanilla coming through - nice and deep. Overall, a very good porter with some deep flavours and a very nicely layered flavour. This one shines through and regardless of the label on the front, it’s quite simply a very good beer, and i’m glad I brought it home with me! I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Knightly Spirits (Orange Blossom) on 31-December-2013 for US$1.99 sampled at home in Washington on 04-April-2014.
3.8 Pours nice and dark with a thick head. Aroma has hints of chocolate. Some hops with nice smokey taste.
3.5 Very nice and thick. Arome of fine chocolate malts and nice aftertaste. It was good in all ways. Just the name "maduro" I do not get.
4.8 This is one of my top 3 favorite Cigar City beers. It’s always available and tasty. Pours dark brown with average thickness for a porter. It’s minimally hopped with more toasted/smoky flavor, average/light carbonation with a relatively dry finish.
4.0 Nearly black, 3 finger dark brown head. Chocolate and roast in the nose. Flavor follows, chocolate, medium roast. More of a stout than a porter. Good stuff.
3.9 Bottle. Pours dark brown, with a light brown head. Aroma is hops, roasted malt, and smoke. Flavor is roasted malt, hops, coffee, smoke, and caramel.
4.3 12 oz. bottle produced on 11.27.13 (three months old). This is really unique and tasty brew. Very well balanced coffee/cocoa flavours with citrus hoppiness., Both elements come through on the nose as well. When I read "robustly hopped American porter" on the bottle I was a bit skeptical about the combination, but Cigar City has really done something lovely here. Reminiscent some some black IPA I’ve had, but the porter notes really come through. I find that the early sips taste more porter like, but by the end of the glass the roasted malt flavours fade and the hops stand out more. It’s like drinking two beers in one glass!
2.9 12oz bottle. Aroma is hoppy and dark malt. Appearance is a very dark brown with some tan head. Taste is super hoppy with some dark malt. There is also an earthy wooden taste at the end. Palate is very dry and hoppy. Overall, a decent beer. A little too much going on that really doesn't as well as it should. More if a black IPA than a porter.
3.8 Taster at RBWG 2014 grand tasting - thanks to the person who shared this! From a styrofoam cup... Lost my Sierra Nevada taster glass... 12oz bottle. Dark brown, thin khaki color. Dots and ropes of lace. Nice coffee, robust aroma, dark fruit, hint of dark chocolate. Good near black color. Lighter khaki head, with respectable retention. Good lace. Moderate sweet, light bitter taste, light hint of the alcohol. Smooth, chewy, lighter carbonation. Bigger body. More dry finish. Lighter carbonation. Good chewiness. Nice imperial porter. Maybe just a light hint of tartness.
4.0 Bottle. Pours opaque black with a medium, frothy tan head, long retention with good lacing. Aroma is roast and chocolate malt, dates and figs with earthy and spicy hops. Flavor is dark malt dominant with dark fruits, tobacco, light hops and bitterness with a dry finish. Full body and medium carbonation.
4.1 Dark brown or black poured from a tap. Tastes and smells of roasted malts and chocolates.
3.7 12 ounce bottle to glass. Black pour with a smallish tan head. Nice floaties. Nice "porter" smell with hints of toast and coffee. Thin on the mouth but solid on the taste. Great toasted oat taste with a hint of chocolate and coffee.
