3.5 Pours a very dark brown/near black with beige head and little lacing. Aroma is roasty, frutiy, smoky, littl vanilla. Taste is very fruity, dired berries, smoke, roasted, vanilla. Medium to full body and medium carbonation. Good drinkability for a 9% beer. Not too sweet.
3.2 Bottle from Craft Beer Co. Brighton. Had to buy it as it is named after our national hero and made in USA ;) Black in colour with a medium head. In aroma the overburned toast with the hints of coffee. Sour-sweet taste witi minimal bitterness in aftertaste. It’s a beer that you would like to drink sitting before fireplace at a cold and dark winter.
3.2 In short: A fruity roasted black beer with a few. Good but with some flaws. How: Tap at Reservoir, Waterbury VT. The look: Black body topped by a very small beige head. In long: Nose is basic roast (burnt toasts) with light notes of cocoa. Taste is malted-forward without feeling heavy, medium-roast, lots of ink, cacao powder, prunes and other dark fruits with a pleasant refreshing character, a light awkward sourness in the fruity flavors, coca-cola, wet leather sensation, earthy hops. A bit of ashes/charcoal in the comeback. Doesn’t feel very sweet (surprising for a CCB black beer). Thick juicy mouthfeel with medium carbonation. The ink flavour and weird fruity sourness bought down my score. Decent beer but not without problems, and this is a rare CCB big black beer that doesn’t go over-the-top so its problems cannot be hidden behind the usual mountain of sugars and booze. Yet another underrated CCB beer, most of the beers from this brewery are so underrated, I’m being sarcastic in case you cannot tell, some people don’t seem to understand when I’m being sarcastic and when I’m serious, these people are obviously very intelligent.
3.3 Pours brown with a beige head. Aroma is roasted malt, tobacco, sour notes, malt acidic and dark fruit. Flavour is malt, acidic, sour notes, herbal, fruit and liquorish.
3.2 Bottle @ CBC, 2013. Pours unclear brown with a small white head. Tobacco, roast and caramel. A bit of tartness. Hmmh.
4.1 Bottle acquired via trade with Homer321! Big, beautiful beer! Ebony and onyx in color with a frothy mahogany crown. Rich, fudgy flavor that shows Ghirardelli, Godiva, and Lindt notes. Brownie batter, raisin, fig, molasses, vanilla, oak, and gooey caramel. Extremely dark and decadent. Creamy and coating on the palate. The alcohol isnt at all distracting. A great addition for batch 1,000!
2.2 Bottle - Pours dark brown with a soapy tan head. Nose is weird and sour with some booze, and some dark fruit. Feels infected--tastes like prunes, raisins, sour grossness, and a bit of a bitter finish. Thin, well-carbonated and soft in the mouth. This is not good.
2.5 Cigar City Kalevipoeg Baltic Porter is a big beer that is too big. Nice dark pour with a decent head. Aroma is roasty with a hint of chocolate, but faint over all even in a snifter glass. Kalevipoeg’s taste is where it starts to disappoint; the alcohol presence overpowers the malty, roasty, chocolately, coffee flavors one would be looking for in a porter. You just get the alcohol. Some roasted malt flavor did last on my palate, but on the way home. Kalevipoeg Baltic Porter is average at best, but the flavor just isn’t there.
4.2 On tap at Dixie. Velvety malt aromas. Creamy, rich, and somewhat sweet with smooth coco flavored dark malts and hints of caramel and toffee. Some earthy wood and coffee undercurrents. Very complex with a good body and carbonation. I am usually not a fan of this style, but Kalevipoeg is an exception....
4.4 Thx! to Sebletitje for sharing! Feb. 2012 Vintage. 75 cl. bottle sampled. Black with brown shades with a creamy smaller white head. Smell is lots of blueberries, lots of berries, some brambleberries as well, light chocolate and fudge, Black Forest pie,… Taste is sweet fudge, malts thick enough to put a spoon in, syrupy, chocolate, some berries as well but lesser, brambleberries and more blueberries,… they must have used an astronomical amount of malts and it must have taken a long time to make this…chocolate, almost light alcohol and almost hint of oak. Very thick esp. for a lager… this beer really coasts the mouth, leaving a layer behind. Probably unlike anything actually brewed in the Baltic’s – great stuff / great dessert beer.
3.9 75cl bottle courtesy of Sean at Melody Brewing. Thanks. Split with 77ships and Delirium team. Bottled feb 2012.
3.7 black color, aroma of roasted malts, caramel, same flavors, vanilla notes, toast, slight oxidation,
1.3 Super-carbed. It isn’t a baltic porter in the least. I would peg it as a lithuanian brewery trying to do a quad in style.
3.5 On tap, sweet aroma and smell. Roasty, great body and pallate. A little caramel on subsequent sips.
3.2 Bottle thanks to ericandersnavy. Dark brown pour with a delightful tan head. Taste of roasted malts, coco, alcohol, and oak. Medium body, medium carbonation.
3.5 Pours black with moderate head that receded quickly. Very sweet and malty with toasted vanilla and oak notes. Needs some more complexity - too one dimensionally sweet.
3.9 On tap at Churchkey in Washington DC, served in a snifter. ours black with a moderate frothy tan head that remains and leaves lots of lace. The nose has fresh malts and grains, along with roasted coffee and earth. The flavour is moderately sweet with roasty malts and notes of chocolate, coffee and vanilla. This is balanced with piney hops that grow towards a long, hoppy roasty finish. On the palate, it is medium in body with a milky texture and average carbonation. Overall, this is a very nice imperial porter. Not quite as complex as an imperial stout, but it is nonetheless appropriate to the style. 2012-06-09
2.8 Why is it that 1/3 of the Cigar City beers I have are infected? Sour bretty porter is weird and not in a good way. SIGGGHHH. Lost Abbey, Captain Lawrence, and Cigar City should get together and whatever they have in common stop doing that.
3.2 17th April 2012 Opaque dark brown beer, residual tan head. Crispy palate, semi dry. Rich dark malts, a little coffee and molasses. Dry finish with a trace of dried fruits. Okay beer but it’s malty one dimensional.
2.9 thanks to collin. HAHHAHAHAHA this is bretted, another infected cigar city beer, congrats on being a complete retard
3.2 Bottle @ Greg’s house via trade with markwise.mtganks Mark! Pours a deep brown/black appearance with a massive brown head that keeps on growing seemingly. Very roasty, lightly smoky malty, anise forward aroma. Aise, dark chocolate, charred malty, chocolate flavor with some light fruity notes. A bit boozy. Not my favorite.
4.3 Great pour, balanced notes of chocolate. Smooth and drinkable for the abv. A fantastic porter which provides great flavor with no bitterness
4.2 On tap at BX Beer Depot’s CCB Tap Takeover - aged for one year An example of a mellow yet robust porter. Rich and decadent, dark fruit, and coffee to finish. Velvety mouth feel and lingering finish
3.2 750mL bottle, sent from LateStart (thanks Jordan), pours black with a small tan head. Aroma of light cocoa powder, some roast, and dry wood. Flavour of light cocoa powder, a bit of sourness, some soot and burnt / roasted malts. Medium bodied, with a lot of the wood upfront, like it’s been aged. Finishes on vinegar and sour cocoa notes. Bizarre Baltic porter, certainly not conforming to style. Decent stuff.
3.6 A nice beer, had on tap at CC Tasting Room. A bitter rather than a sour finish. Black with a small amount of lace.Chocolate and Spicy. Big chocolate spicy bite at the end.
3.8 Bottle shared with Paul and Brendan. Pours a deep oil black body with thin brown lacing. Aroma is smoke, rOasted malts, earthy hops and cocoa. Mouthfeel is medium to full with notes of chocolate, light smoke, roasted malts, toasted bread, earthy hope and spice. A very nice Baltic style porter.
3.8 Dark brow, creamy beige head. Nose is roasted malts, dark chocolate, ash. Taste is bitter chocolate, dark fruits, roasted malts.
3.6 Bottle:   Nearly black, thin frothy beige head, spotty lacing.   Aroma of tootsie rolls, popsicles, and sweet roasted malts.   Much more traditional on the tongue, sweet roasted malts, a bit of coffee and chocolate.   There is a slight fruitiness to it, with a very soft sour tinge that comes and goes very quickly.   Not as salty or vinegar like as other examples (thankfully), and certainly complex.   Body and mouthfeel are moderate to full.   Finishes a bit dry, some cocoa, lightly hopped, a tad sour dark pitted fruit.   Solid beer!
3.9 Draft at Proof. Black pour with a creamy tan head. Lots of big roast, charcoal, coffee beans with bittersweet dry chocolate. Flavor has notes of creamy chocolate, roast, milk duds, coffee and a dry earthiness. Slightly sweet finish and a medium body. Not too shabby.
3.8 Bottle from Craft Beer Brixton. Pours dark brown with a beige head. Sweet and vinous nose, sour fruits in the lead. Some chocolate, but mostly sour fruit flavours. Decent.
