Cigar City Tocobaga Red Ale

Cigar City Tocobaga Red Ale

The Tocobaga people lived off the bounty of Tampa Bay hundreds of years before the arrival of the Spanish in the 1500’s. They were potters, tool makers and the only Florida natives to grow maize. These original Tampanians are celebrated with Tocobaga Red IPA, an assertive but balanced ale that marries the pine and citrus qualities of Citra hops with an assertive bitterness from Summit hops and malt flavors of caramel and bread crust.

4.1 12oz Dose. Schmutzige trübes rot-braun. Aber klasse fester Schaum. Milchiger Rotmalz Duft. Altfränkisch? Cremig weicher Geschmack. Rotmalz, Hopfen. Wie immer bei Cigar City sehr ausgereift und durchdacht.
3.7 Can from Drankenhandel Leiden. Aroma is resinous hops and malt with pine resin, caramel, fruits, some citrus and grapefruit. Flavour is moderate sweet and medium bitter. Body is medium. Nicely resinous and bittersweet.
3.8 Early rating-Florida trip
3.7 Tight fluffy off white head stayed on a reddish brown still body. Spices, malt, sugar & berry aroma. Medium bodied, well carbonated & clean. Sweet spicy tastes with berry, sugar, pith & tang.
3.8 Let's close the session with a very solid old school can: copper pour, nearly the same colour of its can, clear, white head, archipelagos of lacing. Aroma of caramel, pine, strong citrus and ripe fruits. Tastes medium bitter, caramel and bread, resin and grapefruit. Light carbonation, good mouthfeel, caramelised finish. Awesome old school beer. Very solid!
3.8 Can, two months old. Deep bronze-amber pour with beige head. Big rich amber caramel malt nose, plenty of citrus and pine hop. Good citrus and caramel malt flavour, pine sits well-integrated. CC beers are always consistent in taste front to back of palate and smooth silky carbonation, this is no exception. Full feel, moderate hop bitterness that keeps in balance. Very nice.
4.1 Pours a cloudy reddish amber. Aroma of honey and raisin. Taste is malt forward with a robust cherry and raisin flavor followed by a pronounced hop bitterness.
3.0 Pours a red color with tons of floaters/chunks. Thin off-white head with some lacing. A malty bread aroma almost with a hint of salt. Taste is leaning a little bit to sour rather than expected malt. Hops are pine and bitterness is mild and a little pithy.
3.4 Can. Amber color. Caramel, berries and grassy hops in the aroma and flavor. Floral, cedarwood, pleasant.
3.8 Can at the gekke geit. Pours a lovely red with a bit of thick head. Aroma is herbal and grassy hops, caramel, pine; rich west coast hops underlying. Medium body. Flavour is rich and sweet, very malt driven. Biscuity and lots of caramel are enhanced by a bit of roastiness. Hops shows through a good bitterness and some nice pine and herbal notes. Some grapefruit. Finishes bittersweet. Lovely red IPA, really nice balance of malt and bitterness.
3.8 Can at home. Red color, medium sized white head. Smell and taste malts, firm hoppiness, traditional hoppiness, moderately hoppy bitter, sticky texture, medium body, decent to medium carbonation. 8-4-7-5-14.
3.8 Beautiful deep musky odour and colour, yet slick and quite plain drink, not as complex as the smell suggests. But a fine IPA.
3.5 Oranje bruine kleur met een goede kraag. Ruikt fruitig. Smaakt fruitig, zoetig.
3.2 Optisch Kupfer, hier schonmal kein typisches US IPA, eher englisch. In der Nase dunklere Noten, Karamell, dennoch leichte Frucht, Trauben. Im Trunk deutlich englisch, Karamellmalz, kernig, erdig, brotig, leicht alkoholisch, Holzfass, top.
4.5 (old hop, orange confite, ~cara, > miel, onctuo-wow, ambiance forêt pin-automne, > power-subtile, une ipa-red-régal)
3.8 Very hoppy and smooth lovely beer! Fruity too
3.5 Poors clear dark ruby red, with huge lasting. lacing mahony foam. Aroma is strong hoppy, with some floral tones. Tate bitter, nice. (Velp 201904)
3.5 I like the looks of red ales and this deep amber color looks great with a nice head. Overall the beer is a little thin and over carbonated in the can. Malt is there but not as much in some so the hops play a bigger role.
4.2 Pours a deep, dark, ruby red coloration with a large, creamy head. Smells of bready, caramel malt and notes of citrus and red berries, with just a hint of pine. Taste follows the nose, with a great balance of bready, caramel malt and piney, bitter citrus hops as well as a good dose of red berries, with notes of toffee, grapefruit, redcurrant and pine. Finishes with a strong bitterness and some citrus and pine lingering in the aftertaste. Smooth mouthfeel with a medium body and carbonation. This reminds me a LOT of Arrogant Bastard, but seems almost better, as blasphemous as that may sound, but perhaps this is simply due to this being a lot fresher than I was ever able to find AB. Great balance of bready, caramel malts and resinous, citrus hops, with a strong, piney bitterness, awesome stuff.
3.4 Draft. Pours orange amber with an off white head. Smoke malty sweetness, toasted notes, and light flowery hop bitterness. Balanced and quite drinkable.
4.1 Consumed while vacationing in central Florida. 12-ounce can pours auburn with a 1/8" creamy tan head and residual lacing. Aroma: brown bread, pine, brown sugar, dark dried fruits. Flavor: brown sugar, caramel, raisins, blueberries, toast, black pepper, pine. Mouthfeel: medium-bodied with a creamy finish.
3.8 UPDATE- Cigar City sold out to big beer and not mass produced/distributed. Quality went down but still a solid red ale. Original Review 2/8/12- I was curious to try this but never got around to buying the bomber cause the price was $8-$9 or whatever. Then....I saw the 6-packs and HAD to get one to sample. At $10.99 this is a way better deal. Basically, a good hoppy smooth RED ale. I don't know why they list it as amber ale here. But yeah, the color is more towards the amber side. Tastes like a west coast (Lagunitas-style) Red Ale/IPA hybrid. Aroma has some citrus-pine to it. Another fine brew by the best brewer in my homestate. Recommended to anyone who can get this in their area and likes this style....but wait for the 6-packs, cause even as good quality as it is, not sure if quite worth the bomber price.
4.0 Tap@Konttori, Tampere, Finland. Medium, averagely balanced nuances of red berries, some fresh fruits, a hint of caramel. Some malty notes and averagely hopped. Medium taste spectrum and medium aftertaste with hoppy malts and some fruits. Medium, soft body with medium carbonation. Overall, good quality with nice berry twist. Could have more taste though (probably not the most fresh keg). 8 4 8 4 16
3.7 Tap @ Konttori. Pours hazy brown, off white head. Malty, pine hops in the aroma. Bitter, malty flavor.
3.6 Tap@konttori. Brown reddish color with lacing tanned head. Aroma has caramel, malt, grassy hops. Taste is malty with long quite bitter and sweet aftertaste. Flavors of caramel, dark malt, grass and fruits.
3.8 Tap at Konttori. Pours hazy amber, off white head. Malts, caramel, grapefruit, citrus, pine, bitter hops. Full body, creamy texture, soft carbonation, bitter finish.
3.9 Juicy pineapple and guava fruits with a bit of kiwi and cherry in the finish. Chewy malts complaint the hops.
3.7 12 oz can from Total Wine and More in Short Pump, VA The ale poured a hazy red-dark amber color with ample lacing. The ale has a medium body with average carbonation. The aroma of floral hops and cranberries greet you. The taste is more complex with orange peel, cranberries, and citrus. Even hints of pine resin. Nice dry finish in the upper mouth.
3.5 Pours brick red into a hazy chestnut brown with a thick light tan head. Aroma is caramel malt with some citra florals. Taste amps up a bit of piney hop bitterness to complement the rich caramel malts and rye bread undertones. Active mouthfeel; a bit sticky; quite dry. Not my favorite style, but still a winner.
