4.0 Draft. Dark red, pink-white head. Nose and taste are vinegar and sour cherries, like a typical Flemish sour. Not overly sweet. Tart finish.
3.3 pours a murky brownish orange with a thin white head. Aroma of vinegar, citrus, berries and funky yeast. Taste follows, really sour and funky. Nice citrus acidity as well as funky yeast. This beer really tastes of St. Somewhere and ccb. not bad
3.8 Pours dark unclear in color with a velvety peach pink carnation head. The aroma brings the wild yeast and black currants very pungent in the nose, a hint of nail polish from the yeast that was a lot stronger when this was fresh. The flavor brings the black currants, hibiscus, and wild yeast with a sour, tart and fruity ending. The body is a bit overcarbonated, nothing a few swirls can’t fix.
3.2 A: Pours muddy brown, almost dark pink in light. Off white cap, retention is great - just a weird color S: Sourness immediately, light apple vinegar, brown sugar, caramel, lots of malts. Nail polish remover kinda threw me off, but when you swirl this beer around it really hits you! T: Puckeringly sour, but not so much as others I’ve tried recently. Vinegar, fruit, nail polish remover, brown sugar and very malt heavy flavor. Pretty balanced MF/O: smooth feel, creamy finish, carbonation is spot on...not bad by any means, but unrefined - more like a Flanders than a wild ale Lowest ever CCB score for me is a B-??
3.7 Bottle shared by Mes in London. Pours clear, red-brown with a moderate, tan cream head. Big vinegar and tangy berry aroma. medium sweet flavor, quite sour, loads of vinegar, berries, dirt, toasty sugars, light alcohol. Medium bodied with fine carbonation. Warming finish, some stinging vinegar, toasty brown sugars, tangy fruits, touches of roasty-toasty wood. Very nice.
3.7 Bottle, 75cl. An unclear, dark brown body is topped by a finger-thick, dense, beige head. The aroma has vinegar at first, then supported by roasted malts, lots of dried fruits and a hint of acetone. It’s tart and medium bodied, a tad too effervescent, and with some lemony and vinegar-ish flavors in addition to roasted malts and dried fruits. Tart, lemony finish. Actually, it’s so tart it feels the tongue is burning. I expected a more flower smelling, and flower tasting beer, but it’s certainly nice anyway. 111229
4.0 750ml bottle shared by mesandsim. Deep brick read, largeish lasting frothy tan head. Smells and tastes of black currant, hint of soy, alcohol, funk - yummmm. Syrupy, well-carbonated, sour, acidic, not at all boozy - a bit roasty, I guess. Another shambles of a rate, but daaaamn this is awesome.
3.8 A Mes rate. Bottle left over from our wedding haul. Damn good. A strange combo but it works well. Very acidic and sweet. Reminds me of La Folie in a lot of ways. The lemon comes through really well but doesn’t take over with bitterness. Hint of Coca Cola on the nose that is really pleasing. Fruity as hell, bags of character but not aggressive. Really really good. There is just something holding it back from being brilliant. I think it’s just slightly too acidic.
3.2 Bottle at home with the wife. Poured a deep cola color with a frothy khaki head that quickly dissipated. Smell is heavy acid, vinegar, dark fruits, nail polish, and oak. Taste is very acidic, leather, red wine vinegar, wood, tannin, and rubbing alcohol. Mouthfeel is medium with fizzy carbonation. Overall, much too vinegary for my liking and a bit lop-sided. Meh.
3.7 Dark brown with a frothy head. Aroma is fruity (plum, overripe peach, raisin). Malty and deeply fruity palate is quite intense. Strong, muscular flavours but pretty well-rounded. Slightly sharp in the finish, some of that Saint Somewhere influence no doubt.
3.7 Bottle from Epicure. Pours a very rich dark brown and has a really thick, tight, creamy tan head. Aroma is tartly vinous, full of cherries, cherry cola, and red wine barrel dregs. Feels strong but isnt hot. Soft effervescence. Tart, dark cherries, finishing dry. The vinous quality makes it taste like what red wine must have tasted like back in the day, when things went sour sometimes. Just occurred to me, the name is ideal--tastes familiar. Evocative.
3.8 Bottle - Pours murky brown with a thin tan head. Nose is balsamic vinegar, pretty nutty, with light sour cherries. Taste is real oaky, lots of balsamic vinegar with a sour, milky note. Not getting any of the flowers or hibiscus. Soft, fluffy carbonation and a smooth, light body. Good stuff.
3.6 Tasted on 5/18/12 from a capped 750mL bottle obtained in a trade. Pours a muddy, dark cola brown with a very thick brown head that recedes quickly to very thin lace. Very odd. The nose is quite sour with tons of vinegar and citrus, herbal, spicy, and floral notes, with some bread malt backing it all up. The flavor is sweet, sour, and tart balsamic vinegar up front, moving to very distinct lemon and hibiscus spice, and just a bit of sweetness throughout. The body is full and sticky with average carbonation and a long sour, tart, spicy, and pretty hot finish. This beer started off pretty poorly for me, but got better as it warmed. At best, it is somewhat reminiscent of Consecration, but nowhere near as balanced.
3.6 750 ml bottle pour. Brownish color with a red hue. Vinegar sour. Refreshing, light complexity. Berries.
4.1 750 ml bottle. Hazy, deep red body with a big reddish brown head that fades quite fast. Aroma of caramel/burnt sugar, flowers, berries and funk. A very nice funky brown ale with pleasant acidity, sour berries and sweet caramel. Nice and really tasty.
3.1 Bottle. Poured a dark purple color. Very carbonated. Aromas of sour funk, berries, vino, vinegar. Taste is ultra tart, lots of sour dark fruit and some other spices mixed in subtly. A little too tart and higly carb’d to really enjoy it. Tasted like a fizzy grap candy soda.
3.3 Dark pour, seemed almost a bit slick. Aroma is sour, funky, vinegary, woody, some fruit like pear and cherry and lemon. Flavor had some spice, wood, fruit and lots of tart sourness with funk. Prickly on the tongue, very acidic.
3.7 Bottle: Poured a deep amber brown color ale with a nice thick foamy head with good retention and some very good lacing. Aroma consists of hibiscus and tart notes with light funky ester. Taste is a complex mix of tart notes with fruity flavour courtesy of the berries and hibiscus. Sour level is bit more pronounced then I would have expected but not overly so. Body is quite full with good carbonation. Alcohol is not apparent though not sure it is required to have such ABV for this beer. Good, would love to try this one again.
3.6 750ml bottle thanks to ericandersnavy. Brownish red brew, thick tan head. Nose of band aid, oak, and berries. Flavors of vinegar, wood, berry, and tobacco.
3.6 A big thank you to Ashley who brought the 2 cigar city’s today. amber/brown pour with a large off white head. cherry and woody aroma, tart fruit and light lactic sourness. flavour was woody, musty, some hints of fruit sweetness and black cherry under the sourness.
3.4 Date: February 19, 2012 Mode: Bottle Source: Ashley Description: Opaque dark brown pour with nice amount of head and spotty lacing. Aroma was citrus, floral and wood. Taste was sweet, then sour and finished kind of woody.
3.9 Bottle - thanks Ashley! Hazy brownish pour with a big frothy khaki head. Aroma is sour cherry. Medium slick palate. Taste is sour cherry, floral, some citrus - reallly good!
3.5 Bottled, at tasting at _angst_. Cloudy mahogany colour, rich lively head. acetic and vinegary. Floral with underlying malt sweetness, Near full bodied with the burning acidity counteracted by elderflowers and dandelion.More intense than complex.
3.4 750 ml bottle courtesy of marsiblursi. Shared at epic tasting on February 11. Pours dark reddish brown with a huge brownish white head that leaves tons of trace on the glass while dissipating. smell is sour and sweet with vinegar, brown sugar, cherries, peppermint, lemon balm, leather and hay. Taste is sour, slightly sweet, metallic and floral with mandarin oranges, orange peal, black currants, cherries, brown sugar, vinegar and leather. Mouthfeel is full-bodied. Finish is sweet and sour with cherries and blak currants.
3.0 Courtesy of marsiblursi. Pours murky brown with a huge tanned head leaving lots of lace. Aroma is sour, sweet, floral, fruity, tart aceton and glue. Flavor is aceton, glue, tart, sour, bitter, fruity; odd to be honest. Finishes bitter tart sour.
3.0 (Bottle) Pours dark brown with a sand colored head. The aroma holds chemicals, vinegar, mild flowers, citrus, lemon, elders, dark tart berries, mild funk, acetone, glue, brown sugar, Dr Pepper, clove, leather and robust malt. The flavour is light to medium sweet and light to medium acidic with notes of citrus, vinegar, dark malt, dark berries, lint phenols, leather, mild spices and earth. The mouthfeel is round and tart with a ligt carbonation. Tart finish. Medium bodied.
3.3 Bottle at "Alex surölsprovning 2012". Red/Brown color, big beige head. Sourish fruity aroma, vinous, oaky, sweetish, floral. Sweetish flavor, floral, fruity, woody. A bit strange with black currant notes.
3.4 Where the Wild Beers Are, 2011. Muddy brown appearance. Aroma has sour balsamic. Good flavor, fruit and flowers. Some tartness, very much like a Flanders brown. Only medium palate.
4.1 we had a bottle that was aged over a year and it turned out great. this beer is incredibly underrated.
4.0 Bottle - year old. Despite living in FL this is the first time I’ve had this and I’m glad I laid it down for a year. Do not understand the ratings on this as it is a very respectable sour. Perfect beige head, sour fruity nose, don’t know what a gooseberry is but I get currant and sour cherry. Great mouthfeel, balanced. Really enjoyed this.
