4.0 Bottle sample at festival. Pitch black with almost no head. Aggressive roast, dark chocolate, smokey leather, a bit of coffee. Sweetish finish lingering. Oily and full. Very nice!
3.7 22oz bottle thanks to thirdeye11 in 2012 Pours black with a medium sized tan head, some lacing. Aroma is smokey, caramel and leather. Flavor of dark malts, caramel, ham and leather Good
4.1 22oz bottle from Windsor Hy-Vee, in a Sam Smith pint glass. Aromas of barley malt, wet grain, light-roast coffee, semisweet chocolate and a hint of vanilla/caramel. Pours oily black with two fingers of creamy tan head that produces very nice lacing, and an elegant ribbon of bubbles striping the inner surface of the glass. Light and creamy sweet flavors on the entry suggest chocolate mousse and marshmallow fluff, with toasty malted grain and a bit of smoke mid-palate and a moderate long roasty coffee finish. Light, creamy and very easy to drink, concealing the alcohol content extremely well. A bit of roasty coffee bean astringency after the finish. Incredible. A fabulous looking beer with a richness right off the bat that strikes me as surprisingly unique and appealing, without getting too sweet or roasty. I'd love to get this one and Undead Party Crasher side by side and really compare their finer points. Thanks again for another great brew Clown Shoes!
3.8 Not sure about this one. It’s really good but has an aftertaste I can’t figure out. It’s harsh on the palette. Aroma is outstanding! Maybe it’s just a strong stout. I’m a Novice to Stouts so maybe I should just shut up😛
4.1 11,5%. Color negro con capa de espuma marrón de menos de un dedo de grosor, burbujas enormes y escasísima retención. Carbonatación suave. Textura oleosa. Regusto amargo. Postgusto amargo, meloso y a ceniza. Única y deliciosa. Cuanto más reposa en el vaso, más similitudes encuentro con una Black IPA, pues el cítrico va ganando espacio. No hay límites para lo complejo cuando se hacen las cosas usando el cerebro.
3.5 Draft at Growler USA courtesy of HuskerTan, thank you sir. Poured black with a tan head. Aroma of roasted malts, smoke, vanilla. Taste was bittersweet, roasted malt, vanilla, creamy mouthfeel.
3.7 From a 650ml bottle on 31/12/2017 (ABV listed as 11.5%, shared with Butz). Pours near black with a big tan head. The aroma features light chocolate and roasted malt. The falvour is primary dark chocolate, caramel roasted malt, soy and hops. It's quite bitter and intense - a true slow sipper, and drinks every bit of the 11.5%. Creamy palate and moderate carbonation. A pleasant enough impy, but something a bit sweeter and smoother is more my style.
3.3 Rami Rami is drinking a Blaecorn Unidragon by Clown Shoes at Muzeum Azji i Pacyfiku Kawowe, dosc palone, raczej wytrawne, ciut kwaskowate, kapke popiolowe, nie pod gust ale calkiem dobre
4.0 Put this in my cellar for three years and cracked it open on Christmas Day. Pours a viscous pitch black color, like motor oil with dark brown head. The nose is a complex mix of dark chocolate, dark fruit, roasted malt and some faint citrus notes. Full body, with light to modest sweetness. Very hoppy but not overly bitter. All the components are working in harmony with great depth. Very well balanced. Low carbonation. Smooth. Nice stuff and alcohol I well hidden
4.5 I couldn’t tell you about the science behind this beer, or how you’re supposed to drink it or taste it. All I know is this beer is fantastic. Creamy, smooth, sweet, chocolaty, with some pretty aggressive hops underneath all that. Lovely beer.
4.3 Really nice imperial stout. Rich and chocolates. Licorice, pepper, molasses, and pine.
3.9 A 22 fl. oz. bomber, bottled on 14th January 2016. Poured into a snifter. It was black in colour with a one finger dark tan head that had pretty good retention and left some nice lacing. Aromas of roasted malts, chocolate, cocoa, espresso, liquorice, anise, pine with a hint of citrus peel and char. Tastes roasty, char, chocolate, cocoa and liquorice with some piney hops coming through at the end. Medium to full bodied with low carbonation. Overall nice to sip, and even after almost two years, the hops are still coming through quite clearly on the finish, it kind of reminded me a bit of a strong Black IPA.
4.6 Pours creamy black, with a large brown head and excellent lacing. Aroma of roasted malts, soy, tobacco and dark fruits. Tastes low bitter, strong roasted malts, chocolate, tobacco, cherries, dark berries, alcohol very well hidden. Creamy, full bodied, softly carbonated, with lingering flavours, very rich and pleasant. A very well made and balanced Russian. Awesome.
3.7 Draft. A- Tobacco, roasty, char, cocoa. A- Black color, black liquid, brown head. T- Tobacco, roasty, cocoa. P- Full body, average texture, average carbonation, robust finish. O- Lots of tobacco and char. A touch of smoke and cocoa as well. Liked it quite a bit but might be a touch overrated.
2.8 Bottle in Florida. Pitch black pour. Bread, smoke & burnt syrup. Tastes excessively alcoholic. Think I'm being generous with 3 stars
4.0 22 ounce bottle. Opaque black color. Moderate creamy tan head. Rich chocolate malt aroma. Roasted malt, chocolate syrup, espresso and burnt toasted raisin bread flavors. Creamy mouthfeel and smooth drinking for a RIS. The 12.5% ABV is hardly apparent, which is scary! Finish is roasty, toast and mildly smoky.
4.6 Bottle from a grocery store in San Carlos, May 2017; purchased while on a business trip. Pours pitch black with a thick creamy+looking tan head. Big aroma of dark chocolate, coffee, cherries. Quite impressive slick smooth mouth feel. Was mildly worried it would be bitter based on the aroma, but it is really nicely balanced, with sweet chocolate, blueberry, and cherry flavours, some bitter coffee in the middle, and a long sweet finish with some light bitterness. Yum.
3.9 Rating from old records (Aug'17): on tap, only a score but without any notes.
3.3 Bitter malts and toast, you can definitely tell this is an alcoholic beverage. Not a whole lot of sweetness at all. Very dark with little head though tons of lacing. Surprisingly lighter bod than I expected. Good, but I found it overpoweringly acrid at times and that’s unusual
3.9 (Bottle) Black colour with firm, beige head. Malty, roasted nose with black coffee, cacao, dark fruit, liquorice and hints of blueberries. Malty, roasted taste with notes of strong black coffee, dark chocolate, caramel, blueberries, dried fruit, liquorice and a generous coffee bitterness in the finish. Full body, with a certain sweetness. Rounded mouthfeel and fairly well balanced, with alcohol in the background. Very nice.
4.2 The Unidragon promised a deep, imperial stout taste and it delivered! Delicious beer!
4.1 Black as a hole. High cocoa chocolate smell. Full bodied like a rich espresso - a huge beer. This beer will amaze you. Rated by BrewTom
3.7 Aged 5 years? some hop flavour following a good chocolate IS. Very drinkable, and can see why it put Clown on the map.
3.9 Obtained on a road trip to the Dallas area. Never had a downer from Clown Shoes, this continues that. It shows up jet black with a wispy beige fringe on my new Buffalo Bayou snifter glass. Super scent, coffee, chocolate and cough drops. The taste goes from there. I get dark chocolate, raspberry, a great hoppy punch that outlasts all the other components. Different but good. Stout plus IPA. Well done.
3.3 Bomber to snifter, the appearance was a black color with a finger’s worth of white foamy head that slid off at a decent pace to leave some light stringy lace. The aroma had some roast up front, and a light coffee bean to grounds somewhat coming about as it warmed. Light nuts, some dark chocolate and a little bit of earthy hop spice. The flavor leaned towards the roast most of the way through the beer but seemed to try and bring in the earthy hop spice in subtly. Aftertaste and finish was mainly roasty. The palate was medium bodied with a fair sipping quality about it. Carbonation felt fine. ABV felt fine. Overall, it’s a decent RIS, maybe again.
4.3 650 ml. with no date stamp evident on this "brew designed to improve with age". Seems like a major design flaw. Opaque ebony pour sustains a quarter inch disc of sugary foam. Smells of dark bread, char, soy, piquant green herb and a touch of smoke. Flavor is rich chocolate torte, soy, mocha, dates, charred wood, green herb and a bit of peppery citrus zest. Heavy body has smooth light-medium carbonation and a good balance for a huge dessert beer. 12.5% abv is largely absent.
2.8 If this one tasted half as good as it looks it would be something. Rich creamy pour with a massive head. Looks can be deceiving.
3.0 (22oz bomber 2012) deep espresso brown, fine tan bubbles. Nose is super roasty, molasses, deep brown sugar, hoppy and a bit oxidized. Taste of hoppy roasty stout, oxidized, kind of a mess of flavors in general.
4.1 From the 650 ml. bottle bottled 5/18/17. It pours nearly jet black, opaque, with a modest tan head. Big aroma of roasted dark malts, yeast, chocolate, and a low hop profile. No alcohol, but I am drinking this after 11 months so I expect it has mellowed. The body is medium to full and pretty smooth all around. The taste has the same roasted sweet dark malt character as the aroma suggests but it ends far more bitter than I expect. No booze in the taste. Despite the age of this beer it is still quite excellent.
4.5 This was an excellent beer, to my taste. Thick. Jet black with a nice brown head. Complex coffee and chocolate, with a strong (but not too strong) alcohol flavor. But not everyone can put it all together so that one element doesn’t harsh out the others. This was a smooth, well balanced, complex, tasty beer, if you like Imperial Stouts. Outstanding!
