3.5 Bottle @ Jensen. Dark brown, big tan head that settles nicely, okay lacing. Aroma, malty, roasted notes, hoppy, chocolate, caramel, .Taste, malty, hoppy, roasted notes, chocolate, coffee. Way too much carbonation, needs to be in the glass for a while. Roasted aftertaste.
3.6 Bottle @ Home. Pours dark brown with a huge tan head, leaving nice lacings. Aroma of roasted malt, caramel, fruity hops, peach, citrus, oranges. Flavor of malts, caramel, light coffee, hops, peach, orangepeel. Medium body, lively carbonation, dry light bitter finish. 231213
3.8 Bottle @ Too many Geuze’s - only one toilet , Ulfborg 2012. Brown with a nice beige head that lasts. Very hoppy aroma of citrus, combined with very roasted malts and some caramel. Fruity taste of hops, roasted malt. Roasted ,bitter finish.

3.6 Bottled. Pours Bottle. Pours deep, dark brown with small, lacing, beige head. Aroma of roasted malt, chocolate, some pine and citrus notes. Sweet flavor that ends up more dry and with some bitterness. Medium bodied, oily text. and soft carb. A nice black IPA.
3.6 Bottle. A: Dark brown body with a well-carbonated tan espresso head. S: Straight fruity hop presence in the nose with out an expected smokey aroma. T: Light, bubbly on the way down. Dry finish as an acute smoked presence starts to shine. Hoppy sensation on the sides of the mouth giving a warming sensation. M: The smoked aspect lingers without being bitter at all. O: Very impressed with Clown Shoes beer so far. Had Hoppy Feet a couple days ago which was extremely delicious beating out Stone’s 15th anniversary black strong ale. Lubrication did the trick for a 6% black ale but definitely on the lighter side for the style. Not explosive with flavor.
3.5 On tap at tasting. Pours a deep black color with a two finger tan head and some lacing. Aroma has pine and floral notes, with chocolate and roasted undertones. Taste has a pleasant bitterness, with floral hop notes, mild chocolate, roasted malts, and light citrus. Lighter bodied with sharp, lively carbonation.
3.5 Bottled. Pours dark brown in color with a foamy tan head. Roasted coffee notes, bit of grass and some wooden notes in aroma, almost creamy somehow. Feels quite pleasant. Burnt wood, ashes, bitter chocolate and roasted coffee in taste. Very dark ale indeed with ashes and burnt wooden influences in aftertaste. I do like this brew in the beginning as it feels quite smooth but sadly towards the end it gets a bit too harsh, reminding too much of a bad ipa. After some airing it feels more decent again.
3.4 Two small tasting cups at Cotteridge Wine during the 6th July RB Black Country Bus Trip (sorry if I stole someones cup, but I needed two to rate/review it correctly). Really black body: the pour into many small tasters didn’t help the head a great deal. The aroma was deep roasted malts giving off dark chocolate and ground coffee notes. The taste followed the nose: hops traces however try to balance out the heavy malt presence and almost make it through, but just fail. Most enjoyable: didn’t dare take a third cup!
3.0 Bottle. The pour is black with a lot of over carbonation, thinking infection. The taste is heavy malt and actually tastes under carbonated weirdly. A decent black ale.
3.6 Sampled at Cotteridge Wines, during RB Black Country Crawl. Bish and Dom totally cocked up the pouring of this - their words, not mine. Decent beer I thought. Quite sweet. Didn’t know what it was supposed to be though. Great hat.
3.5 Bottle split at Cotteridge Wines, kindly donated by the establishment, lovingly poured by Dom and Bish as we neared the end of the RBBCBB - 06/07/13. Mid black with a medium sized tan head. Nose is roasted malts, light hops, cocoa dusting. Taste comprises hops, mineral bite, light pine and bitter tropicals, roasted malts. Medium bodied with bite, fine carbonation, dry finish. OK CDA but no great.
3.3 Bottle from Cotteridge Wines. Poured a dark mahogany with a frothy tan head. The aroma is roasted malt and coffee. The flavour is medium bitter, with liqourice and dark chocolate. The palate is a little watery. A decent beer but an average example of the class.
3.7 Shared 660ml bottle. Pours black with a small head. Aroma is roasty piney hops. Taste has piney hops to start with a roasty liquorice finish.
3.4 Imagine a man who mashes Minaj in the minge in the manner of a ninja mammoth.
3.3 Bottle at Cotteridge Wines; black pour tiny white, the faintest of piney hop aroma, tastes like a hoppy porter sweet with roast malts and coffee and a small hint of tropical fruit.
3.2 Shared with lots of people at Cott. Thin, no hops to speak of, but enough lubrication to get the evening started. Bish and I totally messed up the pouring, doesn’t bode well for BBB.
3.6 22 ounce bottle into pint glass, bottled 9/11 on the label(2011?). Super highly carbonated upon opening. Pours nearly pitch black color with a 2 finger foamy and fluffy tan head that lasts forever, eventually reduces to a large cap. Foamy lacing clings on the glass, with a ton of streaming carbonation retaining the head. Aromas of dark chocolate, cocoa, roasted malt, char, floral, pine, light citrus, and roasted earthiness. Pretty nice aromas with good balance of roasted malt and earthy hop notes; with solid strength. Taste of dark chocolate, cocoa, roasted malt, char, light smoke, floral, grass, orange zest, light pine, and roasted earthiness. Light roasted and floral bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of dark chocolate, roasted malt, cocoa, char, floral, orange zest, light pine, and roasted earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Nice balance of roasted flavors with a good amount of hop presence; with nice robustness and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium-high carbonation and medium bodied; with a slick, crisp, and lightly chalky mouthfeel that is good once the carbonation dies down. Alcohol is very well hidden with no warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is a good black IPA despite being old. Good balance of roasted malt and hop flavors; and smooth to drink after the excessive carbonation died down. A nicely enjoyable offering.
3.9 This 22 oz bottle was courtesy of Strykzone via a trade. Thanks Dave. Bottling date of 2/20/12. Pours jet black with a really robust tan head and great lacing rings. Nose is resinous hops and chocolate malts. Medium body. Smooth creamy mouthfeel. Flavor is roasted malts with pine and citrus hops. Dry finish with light bitterness. Very tasty and good for the style.
3.0 A - Black body with 2 fingers of sudsy khaki head that forms a nice collar and holds a thin ceiling throughout. A few one inch patterns of lacing left behind. S - Dark cocoa, roasted/charred malts, bold green pine needles, slight oxidation. T - Sticky pine resin laced with dark cocoa, heavy roasted malt fills the top of the mouth. Faint sour fruit notes. Bitter pine holds strong dominating everything in its path. Hints of cardboard and metal. Dry cocoa powder comes back around on the finish leaving a dry roasted finish. M - Medium to moderate carbonation, light to medium body. The nose brings a nice roasty charred aroma with pine filling the background. The flavor has an extreme dry and piney roast character that leaves me wanting more. The flavors don’t seem to go anywhere and have a sour mineral flavor that gets in the way. With all that said it gives you nice hop fix and super dry finish, if that’s what you’re looking for. Serving type: bottle 11-20-2011
2.6 Bottle from bhensonb. Pours black with a huge tan head and a treacle aroma. There is a flat smoky molasses flavor with a fairly nasty bitter finish. This is a three year old bottle that may have gone bad.
3.0 Bottle shared by Marcus. Pours black with big off white head. Taste is malty and has a big Smokey taste. Not sure if it went bad or not
3.5 bottle. pour is light black with white head. aroma is sweet malt and grassy hop. taste is thiner body then there other black ipa. some fruit and bitter hop rather sweet
3.7 Color: dark black beer with high brown head and small carbonation. Smell: caramel, hops, malt, licorice. Taste: malt, hops, caramel. Aftertaste: caramel, malt, hops.
2.6 Schwarz mit voluminöser Schaumbildung. Neben verhaltener Würze kommt ein sehr aromatisches Hopfenaroma hervor. Soweit so gut. Der Antrunk ist für ne Sekunde säuerlich-würzig, dann wird es rasant bitter und zwar Richtung Kohletablette, igitt! Enttäuschend auf ganzer Linie.
3.0 Bottle, bottled 2/2012. Almost black with a large tan head. Weak aroma with some hops, licorice and light roasted malt. Taste of mostly malt, also some licorice and light notes of hops. Drinkable but an old bottle with a light mouthfeel.
2.7 @Eddan: flaskan är nog lite trött men det fins tydliga drag mot en Black IPA. Svag humle och små lakritstoner. Eftersmaken ger mig en nötig känsla.
3.5 650ml bottle from Cotteridge Wines, shared with Steve.14th march.Black pour with large stable tan head.Hop,dark malt and pine aroma. On warming chocolate appears too.Flavours of dark malt, chocolate, coffee and citrus also coming through after a little warming.Easy drinking and quite tasty, better when not too chilled and warmed a little.
3.6 650ml bottle. Black colour with average to huge, firm, frothy, fairly lasting, minimally lacing, tan head. Intense hoppy aroma with a piney touch, chocolately dark malty background. Taste is initially bitter hoppy, later dark malty notes with a touch of coffee come into foreground, dry finish. Seperated hop and malt notes which at no point combine to a united, uniform taste.
3.7 Bomber from Fischman’s. Pours a foamy dark black with a root beer float head - naturally with foamy lacing. Quite opaque after settling. Aroma has dark patent malts, some chocolate and some citrus. Further through the glass there is more of a grassy hop/orange peel presence. Taste is of big roast flavor and sweet chocolate, with more subtle hoppiness. More a porter than a black ipa? Finishes sweetly bitter. 2/2012 bottle date may have killed more of the initial hop presence. A solid drinker with some taste.
