4.0 Quite nice. Lots of dark chocolate and roast. Creamy thick pour with mocha head. Finish bitter like a list pirate booty. Great balance like a ship on the horse latitudes. Bottle from Charleston beer exchange.
3.8 From a 50 cl bottle shared at the RB DC tasting Aug 1, 2015. Pours a clear cola with an off white head. Aroma of dark fruits. Flavors of plum. Bitter roast finish.
3.8 BOD 4/1/15. Pours black as a starless night. World class head volume, lacing and retention. Rich complex nose of dark fruit (plum, prune, date, fig), chocolate, molasses and roast over a subtle hop background. Although not barrel aged, a distinct bourbon note is quite evident Full body with a nice creamy texture. Normal carbonation level with a touch of effervescence in the middle and a subtle burst in the finish. The flavor profile is good with a rather strong intensity of alcohol that tends to mute everything else, which hurts complexity and results in a lack of balance. However, after about half a glass, the palate adjusts to the raw alcohol and does allow for flavor complexity to emerge (translation - this is a sipper). It begins with a wave of dark chocolate over a rich molasses sweetness. The middle brings allows the dark fruit flavors to emerge, which are predominately prune and date. The finish is a slow sweet fade with a somewhat astringent alcohol bite, coupled with the associated heat and pucker, and bourbon like flavor.
4.0 Bottle shared. Pours near black with a small beige head. Aroma of roast, slightly burnt malt, caramel, dark chocolate, overripe dark fruit and caramel. Flavour is light heavy sweet and moderate bitter. Above medium bodied with soft carbonation.
3.7 Bomber courtesy of and shared with Kermis. Thanks. thin creamy tan head. chocolate aroma. very nice beer.
3.9 This one is way under rated. Got a growler at a liquor store in myrtle beach. Strong roasted malt, coffee, and chocolate flavor. Finishes with a coffee fisnish and not overly bitter. Perfectly balanced beer. Black with a thin tan head.
3.3 Bottle sampled at Frank’s January 2015 tasting. Pours a deep blackish brown body with thin tan lacing. Aroma is sweet roast, light lactose and sharpie marker. Mouthfeel is medium with lots of sweetness upfront followed by roast, sweet nuts - macadamia & almonds, faint smoke and sweet malts. I wish this didn’t have the vague sharpie character, otherwise it’d be pretty good.
3.0 Bottle thanks to Will. Pours a dark brown with beige head that lasts. The aroma is strong roast and wet biscuit. Thin mouthfeel with strong roast, and dark chocolate, good.
3.6 Sample @ RBWG Asheville After Party. Deep brown pour with a small head. Roasted earth, dark chocolate malt. Pretty standard impy stout flavor. Hints of licorice. Dark chocolate, hot toffee. Thick and oily. Full.
3.1 22oz bottle sampled at dark lord day. pours a dark black with a tan head. chocolate and dark fruit taste
3.9 22 oz. bottle, big thanks to Chris for this one! Deep black pour, smallish but pretty tan head. Nose and flavor are lovely, with good roasted bitterness to balance out nice sweet chocolate, black licorice, hints of cherry and plum. Not as rich or complex as something like Expedition, but lots going on, and not overwhelming. Really well done.
3.6 Black body, scantily clad lace all over my glass. Smooth, silky roasted malts. Viscous body carries everything well. Damn, I really enjoy this.
3.8 Bottle shared at RBWG grand tasting! Pours a thick black with bubbly brown head and light lace. Aroma is interesting, dark fruitiness on top of roast, taste follows. Good carbonation and a thick mouth. Very nice beer.
3.7 Bottle at RBWG Asheville Grand Tasting. Pours black-brown with a foamy beige head. The nose has burnt wood, whiskey, dark fruits, mild chocolate. Medium sweet flavor, boozy, some dry chocolate. Medium to full bodied with fine carbonation. Modest warmth to finish, some baking cocoa, light warmth. Pretty decent balance. Nice beer.
4.1 Bottle. Pours opaque black with a medium, frothy beige head, medium retention with good lacing. Aroma is roast and chocolate malt, dates, prunes, smoke earthy and spicy hops. Flavor is dark malt dominant, dark fruits, tartness, medium hops and bitterness with a sweet finish. Full body and medium carbonation.
3.9 Taster at RBWG 2014 grand tasting - thanks to the person who shared this! Dark brown, slightly red color, though mostly clear. Thin light brown head. Couple ropes and dots of lace. Smooth, lighter carbonation. More dry finish. Medium to bigger body. Good dark roast, light dark chocolate flavors, hint of dark fruit. Nice longer roasty bitter aftertaste. Bigger bitter taste, light sweet. Alcohol pretty well blended. Impressive imperial stout.
3.7 Draft. Inky black pour. Aroma of dark chocolate, and hint of smokiness. Nice, medium body, smooth mouthfeel with a very slight bitterness.
3.3 Bottle. Pour is close to black, with some coffee colored edges. Small tan head. Aroma is sticky - roasted malts, charred wood, musty, caramel. Flavor is extremely roasty with some dark fruits and vanilla in the finish. Tastes like an oatmeal stout mixed with a smoked ale, strange.
4.2 22 oz bomber. Pours a lighter only black with medium sized dark khaki head. The head fades down to a thin layer, and leaves a spotty lace on the glass. The aroma is got some great pieces to it. Vanilla, some espresso, a hint of chocolate, and a little booziness to go along with it. The vanilla and a roast malt are prominent on the lead of the taste, and then it fades into a bit of the espresso, keeping the roastyness. It finishes a bit dry, and a touch thin, but overall, it's a very solid beer
3.7 Bomber at my place with group. Pours black with grey head. Aroma if whiskey, barrel, malt, chocolate. Taste is bourbon, chocolate, delicious. Finish is long and bourbon. Mouthfeel is mediumish.
3.8 22 oz bottle shared with Tmoney99. Pours a dark brown to black color with a medium sized beige head. The aroma and flavor have roasted malt, dark chocolate, earthy, char, dark fruit, larger hop character which mostly works, and some smoke. Not as big as I expected, falls off just a touch at the finish.
3.9 Bottle - Roasted malts, very nutty, slight anise and milk chocolate. Jet black with almost no head. Nutty, roasted malts, booze and some dark fruit. Thick mouthfeel and no significant bitterness, but lots of boozy heat. Like it a lot.
4.5 Bottle share with xdtfx. Pours almost total black with minimal head. Nice carbonation. Coffee bourbon roasted malts and some hops deliver a delicious flavor. The alcohol shows up much more as it warms. A delicious brew to be sure.
4.1 Bomber from the brewery bottled 012512. Pours a near pitch black color with not much of a head. Aroma of roasted malts, bitter chocolate, soy, hops. The taste is roasted malts, chocolate, vanilla, bitter chocolate, caramel, espresso, faint hops. Medium-full bodied, chewy. Exceptional.
3.4 122111 bottle thanks to billschmeinke. Pours with a inky consistency, black hue, tan head, rich chocolate, marshmallow, iodine, licorice, campfire, dates, deep caramel and toasted malt. Milk chocolate. Flavors are aged. Soil, licorice, nutty, iodine, chocolate. Ashy, brown sugar, marshmallow, quite sweet, campfire. Fading, ashy, meh. Medium-low carbonation, rich body. Kind of faded.
3.6 2011 Bottle. Super thick black wax showed a rusty cap underneath. Uh oh. Pours ink black with quickly fading medium beige head. Smell is thick tarry malts, chocolate, sugary residue , hints of dark fruits. Taste is a very mellowed out chocolate, coffee, spot on sweetness, a bit of char, some anise. Really just a smooth finish. Finishes medium to full, medium sweet with the creamy residual mouthfeel. Not overly complex but quite nice.
3.9 Draft at Brewvival. Almost totally black, brown head. Aroma of burnt espresso and bitter cocoa. Taste is coffee grounds and dark chocolate on toast. Tasty.
4.0 Bottled on 02/23/10 Tasted on 1/7/13 from a 22oz bomber bottle obtained in a trade quite a while ago. Pours extremely dark brown with an average brown head that very slowly recedes to average lace. The nose is super dark with tons of coffee, dark chocolate, milk chocolate, a touch of smoke, and an almost fruity molasses note. The flavor is the same with the coffee, chocolate, cocoa, molasses, smoke, and just a touch of vanilla and nice bitterness. The body is full with average but soft carbonation and a long bitter dark chocolate and coffee, lightly smoked, and hint of vanilla finish.
3.9 Pours dark brown with light tan head. Nose of coffee, caramel, toasted malts, vanilla. Sweet, toasty malts, hint of alcohol, coffee, bitter. Really nice but could use some age.
2.7 2010 vintage. 22 oz. bottle, sent from cory_king (thanks Cory), pours pitch black with a thick tan head. Aroma of smoky malts, coal, chalk and bitter cocoa. Flavour is very coal-like, with a chalky-feel. There is some light smoked malt, a bit of roast, and loads of coal and chalk. No sweetness or roast - this is really overtaken by the coal and chalk. Full-bodied and thick like tar. A drinkable, but flawed impie. I wonder if this is what they were going for.
