The Red Devil is a double dose of our "Mermaid’s Red Ale. We simply doubled the ingredients (double the malt, double the hops) and created an award winning Ale. An incredibly balanced and smooth beer with a strong finish.

3.802-Mar-09 (22-oz bottle: Sample bottle from the Coronado Sales Rep)
Clear, ruddy amber in color with a creamy, light-tan head that holds at a quarter inch in height for the duration of the session. Very malty and medium-sweet with plenty of caramel and toast, but beautifully balanced with fairly piney, tea-like, lightly floral and medium-bitter hops. Rich, chewy and full-bodied on the palate with ample carbonation. Tea-like, almost weedy hops dominate the nose, but the sweet, caramely malts aren’t lost. Overall, a wonderfully rich and flavorful beer, one of my favorites from this brewery.
3.7Tap. Pours a rich red with small white head. The flavor and aroma are filled with resinous hops with a strong amber malt backbone. The alcohol is definitely there, but hidden pretty well. Full bodied with minimal carbonation. Smooth and coating on the palate. Overal: a solid and interesting offering from Coronado.
3.3Draft. Very malty nose, pours red with a foamy head. Well balanced with a strong hoppy (cascade?) finish.
3.6Another solid but not over-the-top incredible beer from Coronado. I keep waiting for one of their beers to really wow me, but so far, it’s just San Diego-style hops. They do a good job at it, but it’s not all that exciting, at this point. Anyway, this beer pours an amber-ish ruby color - rather dark - with a good reddish tan head. The aroma is bready/toasty caramel malt, booze and fairly sharp, piney hops - some citrus rind in there. The taste starts with some sweetness but quickly gives way to bitter hops. Mouthfeel is a tad harsh - just a bit too much from the booze and hops - but the beer leaves a pleasant citrus/caramel/pine aftertaste. I guess this is an Imperial Red/ASA, but they probably could label it as a barleywine without anyone really noticing anything amiss.
4.2A solid and actually one of the best Imperial Reds I’ve had in awhile. Great aroma of hops, poured beautifully with a red hue to the head with a deep amber color in the body.
3.7pours a very dark burgundy red body with a dense light brwon head. the aroma actually has some roasty malts in there coming out which is a bit unexpected from the typical pure caramel double red. its too hoppy, but it has a very porter like malt profile, albeit subdued. the hopr profile supposrt its very well, only moderately fruity.
3.7Reddish amber pour light hazy .... thin off white head and light lacing ... aroma of chewy caramel and citrusy hops ..... taste is of sugary chewy caramel malts and bitter citrusy hops that flows into a dry bitter hop finish .... definitely has some ibu’s ... a great brew great balance and abv hidden very well
3.7Bottle from Half Pints. Hits the spot for the style, hoppy aromas, amberish tinge body with white head, malty, toasty malty. Satisfying very drinkable. Above average mouthfeel. Not necessarily my favorite style, but a good job for it.
3.6Tap at small bar. Dull grapefruit nose. Rich beer. Lots of melon fruit in the mouth. Very Good, but surrounded by the competition I drunk that night this didn’t quite hit the mark. Hope to rerate on it’s own.
4.3A: snifter. rich dark red almost a typical BBQ sauce color, nice white head on top, with a great retention rate, and nice thick lacing.
S: nice sweet malty aroma. some sweet citrus hop aromas and some floral hop aromas. smells very appealing.
T: a lot more body to this than expected. great malts up front providing a sweet backbone with a high gravity. Great hop characteristics, tastes a lot like cascades. Good amount of citrus and some honey tones.
M: a little heavy, but it is an imperial red ale. great palate. very smooth. good carbonation.
D: great example of an Imperial Red Ale. definitely not a session red ale at 10.7% but a great beer nontheless. worthy of a try.
3.822 ounce bottle. Poured into Bruery tulip. Light tan head lasts decent length of time settling to small layer that rests atop the ale. Decent Belgian lacing for the style. Pours deep ruby/dark amber color when held to light. Big Caramel malts as well as earthy hops on nose. Hops seem to smell of slight pine and some dirt. Subtle hints of citrus as well as honey come through on the nose. Slight caramel on front of palate. Pleasant hop taste sets in from mid palate to finish. Some roast malts, slight nuts on back of palate. Silky and wet mouthful; far from dry. Decently lasting finish. Overall, impressive. Delicious caramel covered pine tree aroma and taste.
3.7Bottle on 03/20/2010. Clear dark red body with ruby highlights and a medium creamy tan head. Big floral and resiny hop aroma on a caramel and earthy malt background. Caramel, earthy malt, big floral and resiny hops and a fairly bitter finish. Medium full body with moderate carbonation.
3.9A: Pours a nice ruby red. Light tan head with good retention and some nice spotty lace.
S: Nice sweet aromas. Nice caramel, brown sugar, and toffee. Hints of sweet pine, fruit, and chocolate.
T: Nice sweet malts. Tons of summer fruits and candy like malts. Hints of chocolate, pine, grass and a dash of citrus.
M: Medium, smooth, fairly sweet from start to finish.
4.0My Bottom Line:
Intricate and comforting, this Imperial Red Ale displays a wide variety of both malt and hop flavours, from earthy resins to toasted bread, from citrusy wood to caramel-filled chocolate, all in a soft and cohesive package.
Further Personal Perceptions:
-A rocky head of foam slowly sinks into browned mahogany.
-This complex, flavorful and not too intense. Just wonderful.
-Berry fruitiness also appears from time to time.
-Alcohol is well hidden; this is actually very drinkable for a 9% brew.
Bottle.
3.8Bottle from Smith’s. Pours turbid mahogany w 2f ow head. Nose is very piney resiny hoppy, with caramel malt and vinous fruit. Tastes fruity, with red winey notes, caramel malt, huge hops, floral and piney notes. Prett hefty palate and a good complexity in this.
3.7One of the more red brick colored beers I’ve seen. Malty aroma with light metallic hints. Very comparable flavor to the aroma. Roasty and malty flavors. A bit of chocolate. Combo of malt and roast all through with a light spicy hop presence. More malt though. Full body. Good over all but not great..
3.7(Sample Date: 3/20/2010 Source:Maniac) Floral hop aroma over lots of caramel and sugar. Clear deep amber red with fluffy tan head that persists. Lots of floral hop flavor and high bitterness. Caramel and caramelized sugars with some molasses notes. Finish is medium sweet but dries quickly due to high bitterness. Maybe a bit hoppy for me. India Imperial Red Ale? Residual is slightly peppery with some alcohol warming.
3.6Thanks to kaiser81 for sending this bottle to me. The beer pours a dark reddish-brown color with a cream-colored head. The aroma is chocolate and caramel aroma with some piney hops. The flavor is citrus orange and piney hops with dark chocolate malt and medium bitterness. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.
3.6Pours a cloudy brown with a tan head with deccent lacing. aroma is unique with alot of carmel, toffee, chocolate, grapefruit, soy, pinapple, and orange rinds. flavor is malty with a lot of sweet malt, carmel, plus some chocolate, grapefruit, soy, pinnapple. and oragen rind. has a medium body with a kind of watery mouthfeel. overall, a deccent and interesting American Strong Ale.
4.122oz – Chevy Chase Wine and Spirits. Dark crimson, creamy light tan head. Deep brown sugared pineapple and citric melon aromas are well layered over a swirl of chocolate toast and caramel. Flavor is similar with melon and citric hoppiness balancing well on hints of molasses, chocolate toast and faint coffee. Full bodied, soft carbonation, bittersweet finish. Reminiscent of Stone 13th, but minus the huge hop assault…
3.422 oz. bottle. From: 10/2009 (I think). Slightly different label than that in the picture. My bottle says 9% ABV. Labeled an "Imperial Red Ale". Pours a light mahogany with a smallish British khaki head. Fair balance in the unique aroma - caramel, chocolate, coffee, oil, soil, soy sauce, grapefruits, and orange peels in the mix. Goes down smooth and medium-bodied. The flavor starts with lots of dark caramel maltiness and molasses. Some roasted coffee and bitter chocolate in there too. A drying and bitter soy sauce, grapefruit, and orange rind finish. A touch of smoke at the end. The 9% ABV is pretty well-hidden. Different, but not very appealing.
2.4Serving: 22 oz. bottle from Fireworks.
A deep amber pour with a frothy, light tan head. The nose is lighter than expected with notes of pine hops and crackers. While the nose may have been light, the taste is overbearing. It’s brash and raw with notes of pine, fusel alcohol, and varnish. The malt doesn’t come through at all to me. The finish is long and harshly bitter. This one is nothing more than a bitter bomb. No wonder it was going for so cheap. I don’t understand the hight ratings for this one. Not impressed and not recommended.
3.6Poured from bomber a dark ruby red, deep mahogany. Aroma was of malted barley, somewhat roasted. Formed nice size light brown craggy head of foam. Flavour was of straight forward malts, hops and ocean water goodness. I really appreciate the hopped up character, along with the rich, almost somewhat chocolate hues of flavourich. Tasty beer! Coronado is unreal!
3.7pours a dark brown. light brown head. lace nice. arome oak. flavor is a sweet bark. nice.
4.0Excellent stuff. Very nice malty aroma with a big hop scent hiding in the background from a reddish brown pour with a thick creamy head. Flavor is very well balanced between the malt sweetness and the hop bitterness. Very dry with a big hoppy bitter aftertaste.
3.7Pretty good brew. Had a fairly citrus aroma. Taste was a fairly strong citrus/ floral hops and whatever makes it a red ale they did a good job at it.. Body was nice and a little thick.
3.7A very cloudy very dark red color on the initial pour. I smell cinnamon raisin bread on the nose and not really much else. Very nice on the palate. Lots of malts upfront but mixing with the hops nicely to cut the sweetness down to a much better level. Full bodied but still very drinkable. High abv but very well hidden. If you were not careful you would be trashed before you knew what had happened.
3.1Sampled at Big Beers, Belgians, and Barleywines. Pours clear dark mahogany with a low, fizzy light tan head, low retention and lacing. Aroma is medium caramel malt, heavy pine, citrus, and resin hops with medium alcohol and fruity esters (plums, figs). Flavor is medium malt, sweaty yeast, heavy hops later with low amounts of alcohol. Medium bodied, medium carbonation, sweet and spicy dry finish.
3.822oz bottle thanks to sandstone. Dark brown-red with a medium beige head. Spicy, hoppy aroma, with plenty of grapefruit, light alcohol, and caramel malts. The flavor has toasty and dark caramel malt flavors, but the hops manage to dominate, with lots of grapefruit, peach, and orange fruitiness. Finishes with a resiny bitterness. Red ales can be hit or miss with me depending on attenuation and bitterness level balance, but this one strikes a nice balance between the two; not too sweet, but not too harsh either.
3.6Bottle shared at a tasting, one of the last ones we had. Pours a clear dark reddish-brown color with a small off-white head. Aroma is pretty nice and intense withcaramel malt and rough earthy and citrus hops. Flavor is caramel malt, typical of a red ale, with orange and grapefruit hops, maybe a little pine. Medium-bodied with well-hidden ABV and some palate-wrecking hop oils. Overall a pretty good example of an imperial red ale.
