4.2 From bottle at Camping Ratebeer ’15. Pours pitch black with a small tan head. Aroma has chocolate, dark chocolate and a little bit of roast. Taste has quite some roast, dark chocolate, bit of coffee, quite nice. Medium to full bodied, soft carbo.
4.2 Aroma is chocolate, dark fruit/vinous and dark malts. The flavor is chocolate/milk chocolate, dark/roasted malts, dark fruit, slight sweetness and an acidic/tart/warming finish.
3.4 22oz bottle, reasonably priced at $7. Pours dark brown with a beige head. Aroma is dark bread, molasses. Flavor is dark chocolate, a hint of molasses. A touch thin for an impy stout, and there’s a bit of over-extracted coffee astringency in the finish. I’m surprised that this is so highly rated.
3.0 Maybe it was just my taste that day but this tasted like wet tobacco. I somehow think I missed something because the other ratings are favorable. I will say it is a nice dark pour.
3.8 Bottle. Dark brown in colour, small head. Aroma of roasted malt, dark bread and chocolate/coffee notes. In taste bitter chocolate. The beer is full bodied with bitter and quite dry finish. Good RIS.
3.8 Tap @ The flying dog, Stockholm 1/8-16. Roasted malty with coffee and chocolate. Body is medium to full, the finish is roasted with coffee.
3.8 Tap @ the flying dog, Stockholm. Pours a dark colour beer with a small head. Roasted malts with coffee and chocolate. Dry finish
3.9 9th July 2016: on-tap in BierCaB Barcelona with the RBESG guys. Poured jet black with a small tanned head. Aroma was all about roasted malts with chocolate esters. The taste similar with chocolate flavours coming from the malty base: liked it. Good dry finish to a fine Imp Stout: another heavily alcohol brew during our session in BierCaB.
3.9 D’ampolla al RBESG16. Cervesa fosca amb aromes dolços i torrats que recorden a cafè, cacau, brioix molt fet, xocolata i/o fruits secs. També es nota una mica l’alcohol. Cos mig-baix i final torrat/cremat. Bona!
3.7 From tap. Pours dark brown to black with a small tan head. Aroma is roasted dark malty, breadish, roasted and darkchocolate malty. Bitter and roasted dry finish. Bitter and dark malty. Dry, roasted. Breadish finish.
4.2 650ml bottle. Huge nose with Caramel, malts, chocolate and a slight alcohol smell. Mild body with the same flavour characteristics as the nose.
4.0 Bottle: Served in a Chouffe glass: Creamy light brown head. Black body. Looks good! Aromas of sweet wood roast, laurel, tar, dried leaves, raisin, burnt cookies, coal... Flavours of bay leaf, roast, liquorice, laurel, bitter, wood roast, light smoke, coal, tar... Aftertaste is bitter, roast, liquorice, bay leaf, wood roast... Low carbo, creamy mouthfeel, close to full bodied.
3.7 ABC Dutch Summer Tasting. Shared bottle. Black with light tan head. Sweet roasted chocolate malts. Very malty, chocolate milky, sugary, molasses, dank yeastiness. Very sweet, light bitter. Over medium body. Low carbonation, bit basic.
3.8 bottle shared at the Dutch summer tasting. Thin ring tan head. Clear black pour. Very smooth.
3.6 Black with nice light brown head. Strong roasted malts, licorice, black coffee, soft mineral notes, burn toast, toffee, ash. Medium sweet and bitter with the bitterness lasting quite long in a very roasted way. Over medium bodied with oily feel and low carbonation. Strong on the roasted notes.
3.5 Bottle shared thanks to sjogro. Near black with a ring tan head. Aroma of big malt, licorice, caramel and toffee. Flavour is moderate to heavy sweet and moderate bitter. Above medium bodied with soft carbonation.
3.9 2014 Bottle: Deep, pitch black coloured body with a thinnish, oily deep brown head, only about a half centimetre thick. Aroma of super roasted malts, licorice, tobacco, leather, earth, mushrooms and heaps of both - bourbon and vanilla. Medium to Full-bodied; Lighter in body than I expected, but much sweeter than I expected as well with bunches of lactose and vanilla coming through, all with a good deal of mushrooms, oak, dry yeast and a touch of oats as well. Aftertaste shows some nice rounded flavours with a little sweetness, a touch of the grain, some bitterness from the roast and a subdued licorice and spice character. Overall, a nice beer throughout with a good character that shows some light aging very well and after a further five years, it should round out very nicely, but the body might be gone altogether, I’m afraid. I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from Total Wine in Chantilly, Virginia on 31-January-2015 for US$8,99 sampled at home in Washington on perhaps one of the last chilly evenings of the season on 22-May-2016. 2014 Bottle (Bottling Date Unknown) on Screenprint // Purchased: 31-January-2015 // Sampled: 22-May-2016. So, with that bottle aged a further five years, as oddly suggested by myself nearly three years ago, the beer has gotten better: 2014 Bottle (from Screenprint), purchased in 2015, sampled in 2019: Pitch black coloured body with an oily glow and a thinnish off-white head. Aroma of deep roasted malt, light coffee and chocolates with a touch of molasses and a faint bit of vanilla on the edges. Medium-bodied; Super strong roasted or burnt malt and coffee notes with some lactose, a good deal of earth, bourbon and more vanilla than imaginable, especially for the style, but it shows well throughout. Aftertaste is good with vanilla, grain, bourbon, oak, roasted malt, toffee and pungent burnt coffee flavours that hit nicely and leave a complex pungent profile throughout. Overall, a very nice beer that has done well in the bottle. While I don't believe I have any more of these, this would probably still be better in 5 MORE years. I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from Whole Foods in [Old Town] Alexandria, Virginia on 12-March-2015 for US$8,99 sampled at my house during the first snowstorm of the year on 13-January-2019, almost four years after the purchase and five years after the beer was produced. Rating for this sample: 8,4,8,4,16
3.8 Picked up on a trip through MA a month or so ago. Pours a viscous burnt umber color with two fingers of thick dark kahki foam. Nose has some dark fruit, roasted cocoa, brownie batter, and a hint of astringent sharpie marker that ever so slightly mingles into the mix. Palate follows but its a bit thinner on the mouth than expected. Nice bourbon nuances but again a little touch of weirdness in the dark fruit astringency area. Brownie batter, vanilla, roasted grain, lingering bitterness with a touch of alcohol heat.
4.0 Pours black with light brown head. A chocolate, coffee, and roast malt aroma. A strong taste of chocolate, roasted malts, and a bit smokey. A lingering sweet chocolate and smoky aftertaste.
3.4 ACBF 2016. Poured black with a dark creamy tan head of foam. Aroma of dark malts, vanilla, earthy hops, and coffee grounds. Taste of dark malts, earthy hops, char, black coffee, and finished with some caramel/vanilla notes.
4.1 Draught at St. Augustine’s, Vancouver; 9.3% ABV, 414ml Black color with medium sized tan head. Roasted malt is the dominant note, but it’s not ashy; notes of dark salty chocolate, roasted nuts and very light liquorice; good body strength, with limited residual sweetness. Pleasant alcohol warmth in the final. Straight forward Imperial Stout, no gimmicks, just simple pleasure; excellent.
4.1 On tap at Brunzies (12/15/15). Black opaque with tan creamy lacing head. Medium-heavy body with medium carbonation. Great chocolate nose with hint of molasses, smoke, coffee. Nice sweet flavors with cocoa, coffee, smoke, molasses, caramel, a little oak and vanilla. Mild bitter hops, carbonic acidity. Smooth sweet finish and alcohol warming after.
3.6 Sampled at Brew Woo ’16. Poured black with a mocha colored head. Modest lace. Aroma is light chocolate, coffee with cream and a touch of smoke. Semi sweet flavor of cocoa, dampened down with mild molasses and earthy hops. Full in the mouth. Nice!
4.6 On tap at Hot Rods. Very tasty with coffee, chocolate and a nice note from the hops. High alc. Not noticeable
3.4 Svart öl med mörkbeige skum. Doft och smak av rostad malt, kaffe och mörk choklad. Lättare inslag av aska och lakrits.
3.7 65 cl bottle @ Timo A. Pours black color with a small beige head. Very dry malty aroma, dark cocoa, some roast and even dark berries on the background. Grain and dark roasty malts on the flavor, cocoa, faint chocolate, very subtle coffee roast notes. Decent robust IS. 4425
3.8 Tap at Coronado. Dark pour with a small beige head. Roasty, with some sweet lactose, bittersweet chocolate, and mild citrus hops. Really good beer.
