Craig Allan Agent Provocateur

Agent Provocateur is a strongly hopped beer - a hybrid of an IPA and a Belgian golden ale. Bright, colourful notes of exotic fruits (pineapple, grapefruit and lime) and spices give way to a solid, long bitter finish.

4.0 Voici une bière qui sait simplement être agréable, et c’est déjà très bien. Une bière plaisir donc qui, en plus d’être sur un bon équilibre présente des arômes fruités simples mais appréciables et un houblon classe et distingué. En plus d’une longueur et corpulence qu’on aurait toutefois aimé plus étoffées, une complexité plus développée aurait fait rentrer cet Agent Provocateur dans une toute autre catégorie. Belle prestance en verre, avec un blond doré limpide et un EBC de 18. La mousse blanche nappe cependant tout juste la surface. Personnellement, j’aurais apprécié une effervescence légèrement plus poussée. Le nez n’est pas très intense, sur des arômes de miel, pêche, pomme avec une pointe de genièvre. Il manque cependant de cette fraîcheur houblonnée présente normalement dans une IPA. Heureusement cela est rectifié à la dégustation avec une attaque fraîche sur les céréales, le biscuit, la pomme, la pêche et un houblon très fin. En dégustant cette IPA, on pense immédiatement à du Saaz, alors que les deux houblons utilisés sont le Cascade et l’Amarillo! La deuxième bouche, tout en étant toujours fruitée est plus florale et aérienne. L’arrière bouche, davantage amère est sur une belle fraîcheur et des notes d’agrumes. La troisième bouche est alors plus douce, présentant des arômes de caramel et de pêche. Le final, d’une longueur juste acceptable, est quant à lui sur une amertume un peu plus herbacée. L’amertume reste relativement douce avec un IBU de 65 et une structure et des arômes très homogènes. L’alcool à 6,5 % aurait peut être gagné à être légèrement augmenté. Mais cette Craig Allan vous fera à coup sûr passer un bon moment.

3.6 Bottle at home, golden beer, small head. Aroma is malt, citrus, some caramel. Taste is the same, bitter and a hint of sweet. not bad

3.1 Keg at Hoppy Corner, 2nd Arr., Paris, France. Colour is hazy amber, with a medium frothy white head. Aroma is malty, light citrus, earth, grass, pine. Taste is medium sweet, light bitter. Body is light to medium, carbonation is average. Finish is malty with a decent bitterness. Overall not so bad.

3.6 (Bottle, Platåkåtan, Åre, Sweden, 22 March 2017) Golden amber colour with frothy, white head. Malty, hoppy nose with crystal malt, citrus, grapefruit and a touch of resin. Fruity, hoppy taste with notes of citrus, grapefruit, resin, dried apricots, marmalade and a generous citric bitterness in the finish. Medium body, with a certain sweetness. Fresh and tasty, with a generous hop character. Nice one.

3.7 From 330ml bottle. Pours golden amber, slightly hazy. White, frothy head with soft carbonation. Pleasant grapefruit aroma. Taste is of hoppy citrus. Nice beer

3.5 Bouteille 75cl. Couleur : orange-abricot limpide. Arômes : fruité et floral, houblons. Saveurs : bouche bien ronde, douce, fruité, un peu sucrés, légère amertume. Produit gouleyant, sympa et de bonne facture

4.1 Aroma: bread, dough, leaves, spice, hay, floral, banana (a little) ; Appearance: pale, golden, cloudy, white foam, medium to big head ; Taste: light sweetness, lightly bitter, very lightly sour ; Palate: full body, slick feel, lively, somewhat bitter long finish. You need to drink it at room temperature, otherwise it is useless. Refreshing, and very interesting. Good belgian-like innovation.

3.5 Blonde dorée, tres grosse carbo, Collet tres epais et persistant, belle dentelle. Aromes cereales et pain avec une touche d’ananas. Ronde, biscuité, miel, douce. Finale legerement amere. Subtil melange Belge/IPA

3.9 Blonde de 6,5 % abv, avec malt d’orge et de froment, plusieurs levures, brassée chez de Proef en Belgique par cet écossais vivant en Picardie, mais qui a des installations personnelles sur place. Mon exemplaire pouvait encore patienter tranquillement pendant un an et demi, mais il en a été décidé autrement … Couleur abricot orangé, à la clarté nette, très jolie. Bulles fines en colonnes droites, vives. Mousse qui tombe en un nappage fin de surface. Arômes de malt grillé, houblon fin, pointe de genièvre, aubépine, lierre. 1ère bouche croustillante, sur du malt pils, houblon de style saaz, un peu de bois vierge. Arrière-bouche bien maltée, assez longue. 2ème à l’ensemble malt/houblon vert/fruits blancs assez intéressant. Arrière-bouche très équilibrée, longue. 3ème avec du caractère, du houblon, une pointe d’épice. Arrière-bouche agréable, longue, à l’amertume vive. Longueur qui développe à la fois amertume et malt, dans un bel ensemble. Jambes assez huileuses. Levure douce, fine, belle ligne. Alcool très efficace pour son niveau, il soutient l’ensemble. Finale très honorable. CONCLUSION : Allan a fait du beau travail avec des ingrédients assez standards, dans un esprit bien belge, mais recouvrant aussi quelques caractères d’une ipa. Une blonde mixte donc, ou européenne si on passe de l’Ecosse (opposée au brexit) par la Belgique jusqu’à la France.

3.5 Bottle from Eebira. Hazy pale Goden colour with a thick white head. Aroma is slight yeasty, apricot, slight spice. Taste dry, citrus zest, dry finish.

3.1 Bottle. Really bitter for a traditional Belgian ale, almost an IPA. Moderate malty, medium/heavy hopy, with citrus and herbal flavour.

3.9 Fairly opaque brass colour. Aroma is coriander and yeast. Taste is quite spicy, with a medium level of bitterness.

3.2 Bottle from Firma Bier, BB 26/02/17, large sample. Almost clear orange color, medium soapy head. Aroma of some carame, spicy yeast, bit coriander, slight orange, bit biscuit. Soft bitterness in taste, spicy, slight sweet caramel, bit tea. Spicy in the finish. Medium carbonation. Ok.

2.8 33cl bottle. Golden/clear amber with a thick fluffy head. yesaty spicy malts, belgian style but rather clean. Some timid hoppyness. medium sweet, drier finish, average carbonation. Nothing wrong but quite an ordinary belgian ale.

3.3 33cl bottle from saveur-biere. Hazy gold color. Thin white head. Light sweetness. Medium bitterness. Aroma is grassy, yeasty.

3.4 33cl bottle from Firmabier. Pours golden color with a thick white head, some haze. Belgian yeast, apricots, grapes and spiciness in aroma. Drinkability is good, ok carbonation. Hoppy, dry, zesty flavors, some hay and apricots. Wheaty dry finish. Quite nice really.

3.3 Nez: Biscuit, agrumes, épicé Bouche: Maltée, biscuitée, orange, épicée, légère amertume qui dure avec une légère sécheresse C’est plutôt pas mal même si je m’attendais à plus amer.

3.7 Leicht stumpfes goldgelb mit reichlich Schaum. Malzig, fruchtig, Zitrus, Kekse, mineralisch, würzig, dezent bitter.

3.1 Bottle shared at home. Clear golden with short lasting white head that leaves quite some lacing. Soft orange and apricot, cloves, minerals and light biscuits. Light sweet and almost medium bitter. Medium bodied with dry feel.

3.4 (Bottle, 0.33 l, at tiong’s tasting, thanks, 20160109) The beer poured golden and clear. Its head was medium sized and white. Aroma had hops and Belgian style yeast. Palate was medium bodied with medium carbonation. Flavours were fruitiness, hops, Belgian style yeast, sweetness and bitterness. Aftertaste was fruity and bitter. A decent hop-forward Belgian style ale.

3.5 6/16/2011 2:25:12 PM On tap at Moeder Lambic. Bold orange body with big head. Nose of hops and fruits. Very creamy texture. Quite nice. Hoppy. Bitter finish. Much enjoyed this.

2.7 330ml bottle (tasting @tiong’s, thanks). Clear golden color. Huge size, white head, stays. Farty, fruity, citrus, yeast in aroma. Sweet, fruity soap, citrus and orange in taste. Citrusy hops in aftertaste. Medium carbonation. Medium bitterness. So-so brew.

3.0 330ml bottle - thanks to someone in the posse at tiongs! Sweetish malts, some herbal hops, and a belgian yeast fingerprint in the aroma. Taste identical. So cookie-cutter, I feel like I’ve had this a hundred times. Smooth palate, a bit dull and flat. Drinkable, but boring.

3.4 Bottle from Bieres Cultes. Average hoppiness with floral and citrus notes, earthy touch of pepper and herbs, drinks more like a belgian pale ale maybe, decent brew but probably not on par with Belgian stuff.

3.1 Bottle 0.33l at tiong’s, Espoo. Colour is clear golden with small white head. Aromas and flavours: Fruits, citrus, some spices, Belgian yeast and malts.

3.5 Bottle at home. Aroma is floral, grass, spicy yeast, a bit perfumed, fruity, malt, tangerine, hops. Flavour is light sweet and moderate to medium bitter. Medium bodied. Pretty good, well-balanced floral yeasty hoppy beer.

4.1 Advent Calendar beer No2. Pale yellow, bit hazy, sparkling, creamy head is off-white and sticks nicely giving lacing. Very Ipa’ish aroma, exotically fruity wit mango, pineapple, tangerine, caramel malt under this, nice. Fizzy, light, bitter, herbal notes, dry but fruity to long finish. Nice, fresh and refreshing. Probably really does work as aperitif. Enjoyed in Chimay glass... next time I’ll use tulip to keep the beautiful aroma lively and easier to catch.
