3.8 Bottle. Poured a hazy golden color with a smaller sized head. Fruity, funky, citrus, and some grassiness. Nice tart and funk finish.
3.5 Bottle 375ml. Pours golden with low white head. Minimal lacing. Aroma is of garbage juice, fruits, peaches, old oxydized rag. Taste is of garbage juice, acid, fruits, citrus. Palate: Light-medium body. Soft carbonation. Overall: Good, but a tad weird. Is that "wild" yeast off?
3.5 Bottle shared by tom10101, thanks a lot Tom! Pour is hazy golden with a small white rim that only leave light lacing. Nose is of rubber, herbs, eucalyptus, smoke and lime. Weird but not offputting. Taste is really sour and loaded with lemons and grass. There is a light vinegar component to it but it is mostly lactic I think. Dry as it can be. Body is light, carbonation moderate and acidity is refreshing to say the least. Overall an OK dryhopped sour, I’ve had better examples though.
3.4 Bottle (375 ml). Split with the Quebec crew. From Marcus, thanks! Appearance: Clear golden with a small bubbly ring of white foam and little lacing. Aroma: Quite lemony with eucalyptus (credit to mathieuc), oak, tropical fruits, leathery brettanomyces and a bit of rubber. Taste: Even more lemony than the aroma with leathery brettanomyces, medium acidity, wood, vanilla notes, eucalyptus and hints of rubber (less than in the aroma). Palate: Light to medium body. Moderate carbonation. Oily mouthfeel. Moderately dry and lemony finish. Overall: Either this is subpar for Crooked Stave or we had a poor bottle, but there was definitely an "off" rubber presence. Not much complexity and moderate drinkability.
3.9 375ml bottle acquired from adnielsen. Thanks, bro. Pours a faintly hazed darker golden orange hue. A touch bubbly with nice darker oranging glow. Frothy whitish head stays as a nice firmer film, nice mellow spidery lacing. Aromas are big citrusy grapefruit, bitter rind, oils with firm hop content. Some lactic elements, mellow funk, touches of oak, mellow bread. A firmer funk and big citrus rind bitter tart feel. Initial is lighter in body with big citric juice bitter and tart feels. Some decent sour jabs, firm grapefruit, earth, citrus rind, and earthy hop bitterness. Middle is a bit tart, touches of rich citrus rind and juice. Huge grapefruit, mellow funk and cobwebs, touches of oak and gentle straw, spice and bitter/sour play. Backend is dry, bitter and big citrus with florals, some juiciness and mellow oak. Really tasty and crushable stuff. Juicy and bitter citrus, nice hop profile, oak and nice complimentary house brett and tartness. Tasty.
4.0 From my dear brother: Pours hazy yellow with a white head. Aroma is floral, earthy brett, sugar, flowers. Taste is way more sour than the aroma would let on. Hops are certainly there, but the sour flavors are there in good form. Nice yeasty aftertaste. Quite good. Yum.
4.1 Bottle. Hazy to cloudy golden yellow color, thick white head. Nice aroma of pineapple, orange peel, summer fruit. Taste is softly sour dusty pineapple, grapefruit, subtle pepper. Delicious.
4.0 Draught at CBC ’14. Hazy golden liquid with medium white head. Aroma of lemon, citrus, hops, grain, funk and tropical fruit. Taste is dry and medium sour with notes of lemon, citrus and funk. Light bodied with medium carbonation. Really nice, refreshing and hoppy.
3.8 375ml bottle. Pours clear golden with a two finger head. Aroma is grapefruit hoppy with touches of peach and tropical fruit. Taste is a very nice blend of sour ale quench with the fruity hop flavours of many IPAs. Well balanced between the two, but in being neither one nor the other it perhaps suffers a bit. Top effort even if it didn’t fully grab me.
4.0 Dry hopping is gone at this point but that's quite alright. Pours a cloudy golden yellow with a slight white head. Notes of apricot, white wine, vinegar, pineapple. Taste is definitely sour but not overly so. Acidity is definitely medium high though. Mouthfeel is medium with low carb.
4.0 Bottle shared at Darkness day. Pours hazy golden with no head. Smells of grapefruit with slight hops. Taste of sour citrus fruits. Really great beer.
4.2 Bottle at Darkness Day. Super tart and sour. Overall amazing. This is another great beer from this brewery.
4.4 This beer’s unassuming appearance hides a remarkably complex, balanced and utterly delicious beer. Slightly sweet but balanced by a controlled sourness which is deep and penetrating. Dances a joyful juicy fruity salsa on your tongue. Surely the leading beer in its style.
4.0 1 finger head light yellow. Nose has grape skin and funky leather. Whoa. Tastes amazing. Sweet tart and tons of juicy oranges and grapefruit. Touch of vinegar
4.2 (375ml bottle) clear gold, fine white bubbles. Nose of Brett, Amarillo, juicy stonefruit, complex and delicious. Taste of juicy peach, Amarillo, very lightly acetic, extremely drinkable and delicious. Wow.
4.3 Bottle - Pours hazy golden with a bubbly ring of white head. Nose is pretty hoppy, with tons of grapefruit and a little dank hoppiness. Light tart malt with lots of bright vinegar. Same taste--lots of grapefruit peel and juice with dry leathery Brett and a crisp tart maltiness. Light bodied with smooth fluffy carbonation.
3.9 @ Tasting in Klippan 3/10-14. Bottle from Copenhagen. Aroma: Bretty, fruity, citrus, mango, pineapple, passionfruit, acidic. Taste: Dito. The finish is dry and acidic with taste of pineapple and citrus.
3.9 @ Tasting in Klippan 3/10-14. Bottle from Copenhagen. Fruity and bretty with citric and light acidic notes, lemon, medium body with a watery texture. The finish is dry, fruity and light acidic.
3.8 38cl, as Crooked Stave Wild Wild Brett Batch Number 60, new exclusive American brew Anno 2014, with Brettanomyces, from Mikkeller Webshop, very complex sour brew, woody/fruity and slightly sour/bitter, easy to drink, balanced, cloudy, small head, very good brew, yet very expensive!
4.3 Bottle at S&G tasting. APPEARANCE: clouded blond beer, small unstable white head. NOSE: brett, apricot, fruity, fresh, amazing beer! TASTE: brett, apricot, fruity, very good. Reminded me of Fou Foune in a way??
4.5 Shared bottle with a friend. Poured a clear golden colour with a white head. Leaving the yeast inside. Sour green apples, citrus, tropical fruits maybe from the citra, tart, horse blanket, mango, lot’s of sweet fruits combined with a really Nice sour kick! A lot of funk. Nice dry and slightly salty aftertaste. Leaving a small bitterness in the back. Boy this is awesome!!
3.9 Bottle. Pours light golden with a finger thick airy head. Aroma is quite funky, with lots of hops. It starts off with tropical hoppy notes with peaches, strawberries and pineapple, before the brett kicks in with farmyard, wooden barrels and apple cider vinegar. Medium body with soft carbonation. Flavour is tart with brett, apple cider vinegar, wooden barrels, as well as nice fruity hops with peaches. Tart wooden finish.
4.4 Bottle shared by westmeister. The hop/sour combo here comes together better than any beer I have had that has tried it. The benchmark for me now for hopping your sours. Tropical citrus and pineapple aromas that come through to the flavors as well. Surprising for this beer being a couple of months old still. Medium sour tartness but the hops really take this to the next level for me.
4.3 Thanks wchesser for continuing to feed me CS!. This was a dry beer that demonstrated depth of flavor - some tropical, citrus, brett, funk, spice, orange, musty, juicy hops (still for how old the beer is at this point). The hop burst really, really complement the beer. Awesome.
4.0 Bottle bought @ bierkompass.de. Pours hazy deep golden with a small fizzy white head that quickly dissipates without leaving much trace on the glass. Smell is fruity and funky with crackers, pink grapefruit juice, pineapple juice, lime juice, passion fruit, star fruit, black raspberries, oily pinecones, moist grass, pineapple hard candy, moist wood, dry soil, barnyard, orange zest and lemon zest. Taste is sour, tiny bitter, slightly salty, fruity and funky with crackers, saltines, pink grapefruit juice, lemon juice, lime juice, pineapple juice, passion fruit, unripe mango, freshly cut grass, pine needles, red currants, dry soil, barnyard, apricots, kumquats, minerals, orange zest, lemon zest and hints of resinous wood. Mouthfeel is dry, tart, tiny oily round and light to medium bodied. Finish is sour, slightly salty, slightly fruity and funky with saltines, grapefruit juice, lime juice, unripe tropical fruits, red currants, pine needles, freshly cut grass, resinous wood, dry soil, barnyard, minerals, orange zest and lemon zest. Heavily influenced by the hops in a nice and refreshing way for a sour.
4.0 Tasted on 2/8/14 from a bottle at the RBWG Grand Tasting, big thanks to Aaron Nielsen for sharing. Pours hazy pale yellow with an average white head that slowly recedes to average spotty lace that leaves some residue along the inside of the glass. The nose is really great dank resin and tropical fruit hops with all of the perfect citrus sour that I have come to expect from Crooked Stave. The flavor is a touch sweet up front, balanced by the citrus sour, moving to the same nicely bitter resin and tropical hops from the nose. The body is nearly full with average carbonation and a long hoppy and sour finish. With a bit more time, this might get as good as the original L’Brett D’Or.
4.4 Hazed yellow color, fluffy white head. Great beer! The wonderfully clean sourness, the tropical fruit and the addition of the hops combines to make a killer beer. Delicious.
3.9 Keg at the Copenhagen Beer Celebration 2014, green session. 03/05/2014. Aroma is big nice brett, orange, funk, pineapple fruits and some dank notes. Hazed yellow / straw coloured pour with a halo of loose white head. Flavour is jammy pineapple jelly, sharp orange citrus and just a whiff of smoke phenols. Palate is nice a crisp sharp, sligght pucker, hint of acid. Tasty tasty beer.
4.1 Tap at cbc14. Pours yellow clear with a small White head. Aroma is really delicious unripe fruits, hops, brett. Taste is very sour. Lots of oak, lots of hops, fruity, grapes, unripe honey melon. Really delicate!
4.1 Had this fresh week of release at brewery and didn’t care for it at all. What a difference a few months have made. Slightly cloudy yellow gold. Complex nose that changes as it goes along from massive tropical fruit, to strong grapefruit pith, then body odor, and now honey and light dustiness. Brett funk, lemon pith, bitter finish, but good carbonation and enough juicy hops and fruit to keep it in line. Tart but not overly sour. The hoppy beers from these guys are their best stuff, IMO.
