Crooked Stave L'Brett d'Or

Crooked Stave L'Brett d'Or

Surreal spontaneous sour ale aged in oak barrels
Spontaneously fermented in oak barrels, L'Brett d'Or's fermentation is kicked off with the help of the natural wild yeasts and bacteria residing around our coolship and native to our brewery. Since our spontaneous beers can only be brewed during the winter months, individual releases involve blending unique barrels to bring out the best of each brewing season. Characterized by funky citrus aromas, a crisp acidic bite, and a complex finish, L'Brett d'Or will continue to age with the best of them, gaining in complexity over the years.

4.1 750ml caged and corked bottle. I see no dating. It pours a lightly hazy dark yellow with a superb head of foam. Lacing is impressive as is the head retention. The smell is of citrus lemon, funk, white grapes and is quite acetic. Lemon tartness gets things going. White grapes and vinegar bring a resounding sourness that I enjoy. Something resembling hay also joins in. Funk is somewhat restrained. Oaky more of a woody character throughout. Light body with lively carbonation. It finishes particularly dry. Delicious AWA!
3.7 Bottle: Clear yellow pour with a white head. Mild stone fruit bouquet. Heavy Brett gives way to nondescript sour notes. Average body and mouthfeel.

4.2 Pale golden colour. Fast-fading head. The nose is bright and funky. Lactic acid, horseblanket, black pepper, bright apricot and zesty fruit. Lemon/lime, grass and a lingering sourness. Subtle stone flavour along with a bit of zest. There are some super interesting fruit top-notes, sour candy, watermelon and a bit of really bright funk. Warming brings up some vanilla and other softer Sweet flavours but the beer is still heavily funked out. Damn solid beer.
4.3 Can't say I'm surprised by these results: a great sour beer from a brewery that's rightfully known for great sour beer. L'Brett d'Or pours yellow-orange. Woody, acetic, and citrusy aromas. Notes of vinegar, citric acid, and oak. Vinous. Spritzy feel. Sweet/tart candy-like dryness at the finish. I crushed this quickly. It's pretty damn irresistible for anyone who enjoys a balanced Sour.

In the flavor of the oak is balanced with Brett showing equal strength. Pretty tart with some lemon juice bite. Maybe a note of lychee fruit. I like it.
3.7 Tap. Mostly clear, orange gold. White grape mist and sour light vinegar in the aroma. Light fruits, but tingly sour burn and flattens out to a light white grape oaky finish. Lighter body.

4.0 Number 3000 Hazy yellow color with white head. Aroma is very citrusy with lots of brett character but quite "clean". Some barnyard and hay notes. Taste starts with yeast notes, earthy and woody, continues with citric tartness and finishes slightly bitter with lemon and lime zest. Medium body, quite smooth for a brett beer
