Crooked Stave Surette Provision Saison

Crooked Stave Surette Provision Saison

Provisional saison, Artisan ale aged in oak barrels
In a particular region of southern Belgium, the reserve or provision saison was called surette, meaning tart. Using time-honored techniques, our saisons employ old-world methods to restore complexity and the classical rustic character lost in modern day saison. Brewed with local Colorado floor malted barley, traditional harvest grains, and noble hops, Surette embodies old-world saison brewing traditions. Each batch of Surette is an expression of the large oak foeders it matures in while taking on an aged vinous quality and a complex tartness. Showcasing citrusy ripe fruits, a light zesty spice, and earthy undertones, Surette’s character exemplifies our mixed culture of Brettanomyces and souring bacteria.

3.8 Sharp , crisp saison , only a light barrel influence, some crisp hops, and a touch of sourness on the finish
3.8 Keg at Brewdog Shepherd's Bush as Crooked Stave Surette, 6.2%. Hazy translucent golden yellow, foamy white head leaves full lacing. Aroma is minty, sherbet, musty, tired herbs long overdue from the cupboard, oregano. Body is light with tingly carbonation. Taste is celery, sugary, little kiwi white, gooseberry, little salty - no, more like dissolved potassium, isotonic drink, citrus flavour rehydration formula. Quite tasty. (7-4-8-3-16=3.8)
4.0 Gold pour, white head. Fantastic aroma and flavor. Raspberry, apricot, yeast, banana, hay... Full mouth feel yet tart. Delicious.
3.3 Keg at BrewDog Clapham Junction, Battersea. Hazy golden. Strong, fruity sour notes. Yeasty esters and tart citrus.
3.4 Tap at Brew Dog. Pours hazy golden amber with thin lace. Aroma has pithy citrus and herbal notes. Taste is medium sweet sour with a bitter edgy finish. Palate is medium bodied, sticky texture, soft carbonation and a crisp finish. This rating is brought to you by some one who wants the Saison Wild craze to abate. Enough already...
3.4 ABV - 6.2. .Appearance: Hazy Amber. No head. Noticeable amount of sentiment floating about. .Aroma: Funky, spicy, yeasty, earthy. Lemon and green apple. .Taste: Puckering sourness. Earthy, fruity, and spicy. Surprisingly very tasty. .Mouthfeel: Medium body, fizzy, dry. .Overall: B- .Bottom Line: Not sure if I loved this beer or hated it. But I wouldn't stop drinking it. Interesting.
2.8 375ml bottle - thanks Marduk! (6:3:5:3:11=2.8) Soft fruity bretty aroma. Straw colour, misty, brief head. Tartish taste, a bit yeasty, some fruitishness - I believe marduk when he says rhubarb: it's a bitter non-fleshy thing going on. A touch aggressive, not a pleasant quaff at all, but not flawed /per se/.
2.4 375ml bottle. Hazy golden color. Small size, white head, stays. Farty, sweet, leather, fizzy in aroma. Leather, sour, bit of rhubarb in taste. Leather and rhubarb and saison yeast in aftertaste. Not for me.
3.6 Clear golden beer, white head. Aroma is very fruity and much esters, similar to cider. Taste is sour, very dry. No bitterness. Drinkable saison.
3.4 Bottle (from Koht). Pours golden with whiteish head. Aroma is sour, fruity, funky, bretty. Flavor is sour, funk, oak, brett, lemon, citrus, malt. Finish is sour and oaky dry bitter. Overall: ok.
3.5 Sour citrus fruits, oak. Clear gold, small, frothy, white head. Light sour. More citrus fruits, lime, lemon, lemon peel, sweet orange, sweet grain malts, light oak, soft carbonation, medium bodied. Nice Sour, well-balanced, good aroma. Keg at The Source, Denver.
3.6 Fairly straightforward brett farmhouse ale, offering up loads of tart citrus and sweet wheat with a noticeable sauvignon blanc undercurrent adding complexity. Easygoing saison notes hide underneath the sourness, touching on the mellow cloves-n-grass you want, but mostly this beer's about the brett and oak, mixing funk and pucker with vanilla and wood on the back end. Nice yeasty aroma has traces of oak and barnyard. Looks decent, coming out a hazed yellow-gold with a light head and minor lace. Creamy feel seems a tad undercarbonated. Overall a good--if unexciting--take on the style.
3.4 Backlong entry. This beer is close to style with typical flavors. Well rounded and clean. Nothing too outstanding or unusual.
3.8 On tap at Beavertown Extravaganza. Aroma is tart with stonefruit notes and farmhouse funk. Taste is tart and fruity with hay and barnyard notes. Classic, well made saison.
4.4 Aroma and taste oforange peel, sour lemon, Brett, sweat, pineapple, faint sour wine, spices, bready malts. light sweet and bitter.
3.7 375mL bottle. Pours hazy gold with a small white head. Aroma is Brett funk, apple, wine, and some spice. Taste is tart; white wine, apple, pear, light funk, some oak, a hint of grain, and spice. Dry. Medium body. Moderate carbonation. Soft mouthfeel - slightly too light. Palate is strong but it feels a little lacking in depth and resonance.
4.0 Bottle shared at home. Hazy orange with white head. Light sour grain, brett, rose petals, strawberry, white grapes, marzipan, oak wood, barnyard. Light sweet and moderate sour, light nutty and woody bitter. Medium body, clean hard mineral water. Soft fizzy carbonation. Very nice.
3.8 Bottle shared thanks to sjogro. Hazy orange with small white head. Sour lemon, Brett, sweat, light pineapple, white wine, soft spices, dry bready malts. Quite sharp sour and light sweet and bitter. Medium bodied with puckering feel. Nice but a bit sharp.
1.4 2/20 far too hardcore for me, overwhelming disgusting oak and vinegar taste
3.9 From a 375 ml bottle. Pours a cloudy gold with an offwhite head. Aromas of sour apples and vinyl. Robust herbal flavor with plenty of funk. An easy drinking and delicious sour saison.
4.0 Pours a hazy orange with sufficient foam to please my eye buds. Good lacing. I smell. I mean I smell tart apricot and lemon with carbonic acid tartness. Funky aromas follow. Apricot and lemon tartness, vinegar like sour notes and mild horseblanket. I think I taste some coriander but I’m not sure. Medium body with lightish carbonation. Another treat from Crooked Stave.
4.1 Tap at mbcc17, copenhagen. Light red color, white head. Aroma has cherries, oak, some stables and sour notes. Cherries and sour notes on taste, oak, stables.
4.0 Draft. Hazy golden orange with a thin white head. Super glowing. Aroma is apple, Brett, summer stone fruit. Taste is sour apple, pear, summer stone fruit, brett, lactic acid. Tart, crisp, and refreshing.

3.6 12.7floz (375ml) bottle), "February 2015" dating, poured into an imperial nonic glass, paid the discounted price of $1 for a single. It’s a hazy gold with a thin film of head. Smells like a sour with notes of apricot and lemon-pepper. Ahh...the catch all style of saison prevails in this brew concoction. Sourness is evident; high for a saison IMO, and moderate if determined only as such for designated sour. Dry and very effervescent feel, \. Nose don’t lie, flavor is of ground black table pepper spice and lemon. Something to consider for future dinking, except I can only get it in select stores...so I won’t likely drink this out nor buy except for a rare occasion.
2.2 Slightly hazy in the glass. Tangy and fruity character dominate. This is only ok.
3.6 Bottle. Orange, lemon, biscuit malt, and hay aroma. Hazy golden yellow with small head. Lightly sweet orange, lemon, biscuit malt, and mildly bitter straw flavor. Light Bretty finish. Solid, standard.
3.0 On tap at De Kromme Haring. Hazy golden colour, white head. Aroma of vomit, some sourness, citrus, some Brett, socks, doesn’t smell great tbh. Flavour is sour, citrus, light funky, some oak, wood, sour finish with light woody bitterness. Light bodied. Flavour is nice, aroma a letdown.
