Crow Peak Pile-O-Dirt Porter

Crow Peak Pile-O-Dirt Porter

Named for the ridiculous 4 foot dirt pile we had to put our brewery on to get us out of the FEMA-designated 100 year floodplain (no-one can remember this part of Spearfish ever flooding). This robust porter is black in color, is medium-bodied and has a rich, roasted malt flavor ending with a pleasing hop flavor and mild hop bitterness.

3.5 Aromas include a nice roasted coffee flavor, plus a bit of toffee and molasses. The hop presence is fairly light with resin and spruce aromas. The color is black with a small off-white head. The taste is a bit sweet which I felt worked well with the roasted coffee aromas. The bitterness is somewhat light which I feel is a weakness resulting in a lack of balance. The body is medium, the texture is a little thin for a porter; the carbonation is average to just a tad soft. The finish is average to long in length. Overall I like the roasted coffee and slight sweetness; however the hops are too subdued for a porter and the beer is a bit on the thin side for a porter.
3.6 Pretty good and tastes better since it is from South Dakota. Thanks for trade Ron. Standard porter-ish comments apply here. A bit towards the gritty in the finish.
3.4 On tap at the Brewpub with Erica, Chris and Patty. Dark brown pour with a khaki head. Roasted malt, dark chocolate, and coffee grounds. Some ash, dark fruits, and earthy hops. Flavor is a touch bitter. Light sweetness, some ash, roast, and earthy hops. Coffee grounds, dark chocolate, and a touch of dark fruit.
3.4 Came out of the can with little pop and poured to a wisp of a head, but unleashed a nice combination of chocolate and coffee in the aroma. Body was light for a porter but good sweetness leading to a little bitterness on the finish was on target and tasty.
3.4 Dark brown/black color; Medium slightly creamy body; Aroma of toasted malt, chocolate, caramel, & some coffee; Flavor of slight roasted malt, caramel, hops, chocolate, and some nuts; Finish is slightly bitter; Pretty decent.
3.9 C+. Pours a black color with khaki head. Surprisingly bitter, but has a good flavor
2.9 Can @ home. First SD tick! Deep brown pour with red highlights. Tan head. Aroma is fairly nutty. Toasted brown bread and pain au chocolate. A bit of coffee. Light cardboard. Flavor is moderately bitter. Some coffee acidity and mild pepper. Chewy toasted malts. Medium body, a touch thin. Prickly carb. Fine.
3.6 Many thanks to Erzengel for sharing! Pours very dark brown colour with a small tan head. Aroma of dark mild roasted malt, caramel, brown sugar. Taste of dark mild roasted malt, sweet malt, caramel, brown sugar, nice!
3.4 Many thanks to jsquire for this can! Deep brown with a very fast disappearing head. The beer is smooth and nice chocolaty. Roasted bitter in the aftertaste, not too deep, but refreshing and easy to drink. A bit viscous and very dry. The aftertaste is dry roasted with a nice intense bitterness. Roasted malt, dry brown burned sugar, nice bitterness.
4.0 12 ounce can into pint glass, no can dating. Pours crystal clear dark reddish brown color with a 1-2 finger dense tan head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, toasted dark bread, light smoke/char, and herbal/roasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of dark/roast/bready malt and light earthy hop notes; with good strength. Taste of big dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, toasted dark bread, light smoke/char, and herbal/roasted earthiness. Light-moderate herbal/roasted bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, toasted dark bread, light smoke/char, and herbal/roasted earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Damn nice robustness, complexity, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt and light-moderate earthy hop flavors; with a great roasted bitterness/sweetness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Light-moderate dryness from hop and roasted bitterness as well. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, moderately creamy, and lightly sticky/chalky mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is a damn nice American porter! All around great robustness, complexity, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt and light-moderate earthy hop flavors; and very smooth and easy to drink. A very enjoyable offering.
3.3 Can at home via trade to get me some Dakotas since my trip fell through this summer. Dark brown pour. Faint nose of nestle chocolate. Tastes of cocoa nibs, cola, earth, brown sugar, vanilla, hint of molasses. Everything subdued and semi sweet. Could use punch up
4.0 From a cool-looking 12oz can into a dimple mug, thanks so much Greg! Opaque dark reddish brown with sudsy beige foam which fell to a thin but persistent head, some lace. A perfectly true-to-style English Porter, though it may not fit every American craft beer drinkers’ idea of Porter. Malty and caramelly, hint of toffee, pure dark chocolate, nuts, loads of dark stone fruit and berry flavours: tart cherry, black plum, grapeskins, black currant, cranberry. Strong Black Malt impression, in the Yorkshire/Ringwood/Kennebunkport style. Estery ale yeast, earthy/woodsy/resiny Fuggle-ish hop balance. Light-medium body, moderate carbonation, very complex aftertaste, somehow simultaneously rich and dry. So very good. South Dakotans may not have much local beer, but with stuff like this in cans, you wouldn’t need much else!
3.2 ポーター 香ばしい香りが強い、若干の焦がした苦み 甘さは控えめ
3.3 Pours a cola brown color with a slight roasted malt aroma. Taste is similar with a light oatmeal flavor throughout. A dry aftertaste, with a roasted nut flavor. A nice Porter, thanks to John Mosquera.
3.4 12-oz. can. It has a cola aroma similar to Dr Pepper along with a heavy amount of charred barley, earthy hops, a bit of toffee, and (appropriate given the name) a touch of gardening soil. Pours clear dark brown with cherry wood highlights; no head. Airy chocolate and a slightly vegetal bitterness combine for a pleasant balanced taste with a hint of burnt toast and brown sugar. The body is spot on for a porter; bitter cocoa finish. A decent brew.
3.2 Can, shared at RBSG. Medium-dark brown, beige head. Treacle and chocolate, dry finish, a tad thin. But who cares-- South Dakota tick!
3.1 12oz can pours out dark brown topped with a ring of a head. Nose is roast malts chocolate and some sweetness. Taste is more of the roast malts and chocolate.
3.4 Pours brown with a large soapy head. The aroma has dark caramel, chocolate, dates, figs, molasses and walnuts. It has a medium body with a light amount of carbonation. The body is a little on the slick side. The taste starts off with roast, a woody version of chocolate, dark berries, some oxidation and a bit of harsh roast/toast. The finish is pretty woody and has some cocoa. Decent porter. Thanks to gregwilsonstl for passing this on along to me.
3.4 12 oz. can from shrubber85 - thanks again, Roger! Pours a mostly clear amber-brown with a small beige head that settles into a ring and leaves some spots of film in the glass. Notes of chocolate and toasted and mild roasted malts, tobacco, earth, brown sugar, and mellow spice. Light-medium bodied, with moderate carbonation and a rich, toasty, sweet mouthfeel. A little past its prime, but not a bad porter. Simple.
3.3 12 oz can thanks to phaleslu (my first South Dakota tick). Pours a clear cola brown color with a small off white head. The aroma and flavor have pretty much what I would expect from a basic porter, roasted malt, some fruity character, ash, mild bitterness, the body is thin, some earthy hops late, new state tick though, winning.
2.8 12oz can, big thanks to phaleslu for sharing. Brown color, with pretty much no head. Toasty, chocolate, nutty. Medium-plus body. Kind of soft light carbonation. Moderate sweet taste, light to moderate bitter, touch of a bite. Not a great porter. Wow. Impressive in it’s underwhelmingness.
3.5 Pour on tap at Independence Ale House, dark black pour with tan head, aroma brought notes of ash, roast, slight coffee into a bit of caramel, chocolate, slight vanilla. Taste was a mix of caramel, bread, dark fruit, dark chocolate, vanilla into a bit of coffee, roast, finishing slightly sweet.
3.1 Finally crossed off South Dakota! Chocolate. Tasted from a can. Nothing remarkable about this other than South Dakota is elusive.
3.6 Many thanks to weihenweizen for the bonus state! Pours a deep brownish black from the can with dissipating tan head that fades to lacy wisp. Aroma of dark roasted malt and chocolate, a hint of earth. Taste follows, a hint of smoke and ash. Medium body, light carbonation, decent porter.
3.5 Quite dark with a small and quickly dissipating head. Aroma is chocolate, roasted malt, earthy, dry malty cocoa. Medium full body. Flavor is earthy, chocolate, lightly roasted malt, a bit of sweet fruit. Finish is medium bittersweet cocoa. Pretty solid porter.
3.2 Can in Seattle. Thanks Chris! Deep brown, sweet aroma. Mild chocolate, sweet rosy beer. Metallic note.
3.6 12 oz can pour. Much thanks to Chris for helping me knock off South Dakota. Pretty good porter here. Soft chocolate and dark fruits aroma. Slightly dusty flavor with more dark fruit than anything. Some chocolate. Dry, roasted malt finish. Pretty good stuff.
3.0 Pours a deep brown/black color with a low, tan head that quickly fades down. Aroma has a strong brown malt, modest amount of nuttiness with a chocolate malt and earthy hop finish. Flavor starts off with a sweet chocolate and brown malt flavor and transitions to a watery, light cigar ash flavor with a bitter malty finish. Body is light with almost no carbonation and just a touch of dryness. Overall an okay brew.
3.2 Sampled at an ESBLS tasting. It poured a dark brown color with a tan head. The aroma was of coffee, dark roasted malts and some chocolate. The taste was similar to the aroma with some maltiness and roasted hop bitterness.
3.7 Sampled at esbls. Thanks, Shep. Dark amber brown. Clear. Chocolatey nose with grains. Grain and coffee are tasted first. Nice hops under bring citrus. I like it.
