Daleside Morocco Ale

Daleside Morocco Ale

This is a very dark, rich and mysterious ale brewed to an ancient recipe dating back to Elizabethan times. Full bodied, malty with spicy overtones this complex beer is only brewed occasionally. Enjoy a bottle as the perfect end to a perfect meal.

The recipe for Morocco Ale is believed to date from Elizabethan times. Colonel John Grahme of Levens was a courtier to James II and the name ’Morocco Ale’ may have been associated with the dark Moors who came to the court when Catherine of Breganza married Charles II and brought Tangiers as part of her dowry.

Every May-time until 1877, the unique, dark, spiced Morocco Ale, matured for 21 years, was served at a great feast held in Levens Gardens. The guests were required to stand on one leg and empty in a draught a tall constable glass filled with ’Morocco’ whilst pledging to the ancient house "Luck to Levens whilst t’Kent flows"

4.2 From old tasting notes. Mahogany reddish brown color topped by a bubbly beige head. Spicy aromatic malt nose is redolent of molasses. Delicious spicy malt flavor hints at cloves and licorice. After swallowing this brew, me feels warm and mellow. Very unique and interesting.
3.9 Spicy, dark beer. Very tasty and a really interesting beer. Would definitely drink it if available.
3.2 Spicy with cinnamon, ginger, pepper, cardamom. Kind of a Christmas feeling. Nice but only i small amounts
3.2 Cask Pint at Wibbas Down (JDW), Wimbledon, London in Nov 2009 - Dark Brown in colour with Reddish tinge. Very spicy; clove, nutmeg, etc. Malty; roast malts, toffee, caramel. Fruity (dark fruits). Hoppy. Spicy roast malty throughout. Dry spicy peppery finish. Rather unusual tasting beer. (2009-11)
4.5 A gift from Bill S. Dark brown with thin head. Nose is raisin and plum pudding, cinnamon along with a bit of earthiness. Taste starts with burnt fruit, a little chocolate and roast malt in middle. Finishes dry and fruity (cherry and plum); bitter aftertaste. Syrupy mouthfeel, low carbonation, tannic aftertaste. Very complex. I liked this one.
4.3 Superb rich tasting dark ale. A hint of spiceness sumply makes you want more. Shame it isn’t on tap.
3.4 Clear deep red beer with a beige head. Malty scent. Flavour is mostly malty fruit, maybe apple, and then a sourness I can’t place. Not overpowering though. It’s a hearty, drinkable beer.
3.8 500ml bottle from Mainsgill Farm Shop. Dark, reddish in colour, creamy ran head. Malty berry aroma, taste is sweet berries, spice and a touch of aniseed. Very tasty

3.1 Drunk from 50cl bottle bought at Bierhuis in Ossett. Enjoyable spiced dark brown ale.
3.3 Bottled. The aroma has toffee, roast, laurel, ginger. Dark brown-black coloured beer with a thin, off-white head. The taste is light bitter, bit sweet, has quite some spice to it, light roast and some chcocolate. Light-medium bodied beer. ok.
3.4 1st April 2015 A long overdue rate, this was a transition beer for me in to the craft beer world 10 years ago. Hazy dark amber beer, small pale cream colour head. Palate is airy and semi dry, mild fine carbonation. Sweetish malts, mild cinnamon, light floralness. Dry finish. Nicely joined up for a spice beer and pretty drinkable.
3.0 Shared bottle at Cardinal, Stavanger. Pours brown and clear. Aroma of clover and other spice, roasted malt, caramel. Taste includes malt and some fruity notes, ginger?. Medium bodied, bitter-sweet finish.
3.2 Shared bottle at Mi2 at Cardinal 26.01.15. Dark brown. Beige head. Spicy and herbal aroma, with ginger and cloves. Similar taste. Well-balanced bitterness. Could have passed as a yuletide beer.
3.8 Cask at the foot of the walk. Pours reddish copper, nose is spiced, toffee, caramel, taste is similar, rich, fruity.
3.2 Bottle from SarkyNorthener cheers Martin; dark coca cola brown pour with a bubbly tan head, malt and caramel aroma, taste has winter fruits, nut, caramalts, hint of spice ok.

2.8 It’s a beer for winter. Dark, sticky malty taste with spicy background. Not something you’d want to drink a lot of but an interesting beer to finish a meal with.
2.4 Used to love this, but is not as spicy/ gingery as I remember. All smells/ tastes rather artificial .
1.6 Smelt of ginger and burnt fruit. Tasted about the same. Couldn't finish a pint - left half. The worst beer I've had in ages. Would never drink again.
3.5 Aroma: Roasty with some dark chocolate, graham cracker and very light woody spice with fig. Appearance: Reddish brown with a bubbly bone head. Flavor: Nutty, chocolate, graham cracker; complex and malty. Palate: Medium body, creamy texture, flat carbonation, abrupt finish. Overall: Interesting beer that I’d like to try again one day with a fresher palate.
3.2 Cask by handpump at Drum & Monkey, Glasgow on 16 Nov 2013: clear dark brown, medium creamy beige head, aniseed, spicy aroma, no lacing, complex malty spicy flavour, oily texture, not one that can be knocked back quickly.
3.5 Cask at the Argyll Arms, Nicholson’s - London. Pours clear ruby with a fine, foamy beige head. The aroma holds brown bread, stewed berries and wintery spices. Medium seeet flavor with toasty bread, earthy bitterness, mild caramel, dried berris, nutmeg. Medium bodied withfine carbonation. Toasty sugar finish, more bready malts, fruitcake, apple, plum, fig, nutmeg, cinnamon. Not bad.
4.9 best bitter of the week for me. blown away with the taste. would preferred it to be slightly lighter. Hey, why we worry with the appearance just sit back and enjoy this beauty
Lite humle. Meget velsmakende.
3.3 Shared bottle at Cardinal.Pours clear dark ruby with a tiny beige head. Aroma of spicy malts. Taste is moderate sweet maltry, lots of nice spices, light dry end, nice.
3.4 500 ml bottle, from Voldby Købmandsgaard. ABV is 5.5%. Deep brown colour, large to moderate beige head. Unusual and interesting spicy and malty aroma, also notes of brown bread and caramel. The flavour is is also distinctly malty, medium sweet with some caramel, and a combination of exotic and "dusty" spices and hops that I’ve had in no other beer. More of a beer I’d like to have on a dark autumn night than on this hot summer’s day.
3.4 Bottle. Pours reddish brown with off white head. Nose and taste of molasses, dark malt, light spice, grape and dark fruit. Medium body.
