3.7 Pours thick syrupy brown with almost no head. Aroma of burnt toffee, raisins, caramel malt, sweet booze. Taste is dark fruit syrup, burnt sugar, molasses, prunes, brown sugar and boozy oak. Hides the alcohol pretty well but it’s also pretty sweet. Not bad.
4.8 I wish they’d make this again! Pours dark amber and cloudy, sherry notes and complex full flavored yet smooth. Medium hoppy, well masked alcohol. Great beer.
4.3 This is the sour version. It is still called 3 guy off the scale and I didn’t see a separate entry, so I’m leaving the review here. Pours a rusty red. No head. No carbonation. Aroma, vanilla, chocolate, sour cherry, caramel. This is a great smelling beer. Taste- the sourness comes through a little more in the taste, but it’s still a pretty subtle tartness. It tastes like a chocolate caramel tart cherry dessert. This is really good.
4.0 Bottle shared by Drew, thanks! Pours a deep copper, mostly clear. Nose is lightly oxidized, richly malty and sweet in the nose. Sherry and malt. Clean and has held up well. On tasting, bit bitterness, clean alcohol. Richly malty and a nice sweetness. Clean and dry finish. Pretty damn fine stuff.
3.5 12 oz bottle shared by drewbeerme. Thanks, Drew! Pours a nice deeper amber pour, almost into the brownish range. A bit of glow on the edges with a deeper darker body, good haze. Frothy head dies to a film, laces small. Aromas offer sweeter sticky malts, toffee and biscuits, caramel and dough. Touches of red fruit, dried fruit, and gentle heat on the nose. Some raisin, bit of cocoa and dryness but still pretty sticky. Initial is similar, bigger body and a bit of heat off the bat. Sticky and carmelized malts, dough and caramel. Some red fruit, dried fruit, and gentle spiciness on the palate. Kiss of cocoa, heat, dryness from the alcohol as we move back. Warm and inviting as we get into it, it’s pretty impressive with the age on this. Gentle pit fruit elements, sweet malts. Kinda shakes itself out to something more impressive.
3.6 Bottle shared by Drew, thanks. Pours a clear deep amber with a gray head that starts and remains at the edges. Aroma has a strong caramel note with sweet grains and a hint of grass. Flavor has a combination of sweet and earthy grains with a hint of earthy grassiness.
0.6 Sour version. Completely flat. Probably a batch gone wrong at the brewery. It is acetoney. Soy sauce mixes with nail polish. Not very sour or good. Luckily i didn’t buy the bottle, I would be pissed if I did.
3.3 (Old bottle) Pours hazy reddish brown with no head. The aroma holds leather, sour candy, ripe cherries/cherry lemonade, figs, raisins, grainy bread, caramel, milk chocolate, old hops and light touch of wet cardboard. The flavour is medium to heavily sweet, medium bitter and light acidic with notes of cherries, dark fruits, woodsy alcohol, robust malt, old hops and oxidation. The mouthfeel is numbing, round and sticky with a light carbonation. Numbing alcohol, cherry candy and malt on the finish. Medium to full bodied.
3.2 355 ml bottle courtesy of Marsiblursi. Pours hazy deep reddish amber with a small offwhite head that quickly dissipates without leaving any trace on the glass. Smell is very sweet, fruity and malty with caramel, cherries, lemon zest, leather, dry soil, prunes, figs, raisins in rum, hay, roasted cereal, moist wood, dark grapes and liquorice hard candy. Taste is sweet, tiny bitter and tiny sour with caramel, cereal, leather, raisins, prunes, moist soil, moist wood, hay, overripe lemons, alcohol and hints of sweet dark bread and liquorice root. Mouthfeel is round, tiny tart, boozy and medium to full bodied. Finish is sweet, tiny bitter and slightly sour with prunes, raisins, figs, leather, liquorice root, alcohol and old bread.

3.5 355mL red wax thanks to ryan. Pours flat, clear amber. No lace. No head. Minty, American barleywine nose with sugary strawberry tea. Taste is bitter up front moving to maple and mild mint with a long, bitter, earthen finish. Palate is thicker, tangy, minty, mild powder. Good stuff. Big orange mint and strawberry.
4.4 Bottle shared by motortoddhead. Big ups for knockin’ this one off my wants list! Deep, red hued amber with minimal off-white head. Huge dark fruit punch, raisins, toasted malt, skunked hops, mild booze, and red wine/acidic tinge at the end. Big dark fruit, brandy soaked raisin, caramel, toasted malt, booze and skunky/earthy hop bitterness at the end. Malt/booze tang dominates the palate with sticky malt hanging on to the end.
3.8 This was pretty good and pretty surprising. This beer had a really good blend of hop , fruit and alcohol. I was really surprised how flavorful and enjoyable it was.
3.4 Reviewed from notes. Poured into a snifter. Color is a moderate caramel-copper color with some orange notes. Small white head that quickly dissipates into nothing. Nose is pretty strong booze with good notes of caramel, sweet malt, and fruit. The taste is a bit boozy, though not terribly so given the ABV. Good fruit presence. The feel is where the booze gets it, as it’s hot even for its alcohol level. Drinks fairly well, but probably needs to rest for a long time. Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 11-09-2010
4.2 12oz bottle dated May 2008. Pours a brilliant clear reddish-amber color with a small but lasting light khaki head. Great malty aroma of caramel, toffee, molasses, and brown sugar. The flavor is really awesome. Huge toffeeish malts, rather English-style tasting, with brown sugar, marzipan, amaretto, maple syrup, and some faded hop resins. Sweet but great. Not too heavy on the palate with softer carbonation. Great barleywine, and it seems the age has treated it well.
4.0 In short: A surprisingly easy to drink very big beer of some kind How: Bottle 12oz. Consumed when over 1 year of age (2 years?). Bottle sent to me by dmschefke. Thanks a lot Dave. The look: Cloudy purple body topped by a beige ring of foam In long: Strong nose of figs, dates, toffee. Smells a bit like a bit like a cranked up dark English Strong Ale. Taste is full of red liquorice, barley candy, sherry, raisins, toffee, cherry tree, tobacco, dark fruits, bitter orange peels, caramel. What’s really amazing about this one is that it did not feel very sweet or very boozy at all. Probably one of the less boozy (maybe THE less boozy) 12%+ beer I’ve ever had. I have a hard time to believe this is 15%. I had a buzz after my bottle so maybe it is indeed 15%. Wow, unreal. Body is not quite as big as I love from a big beer. I don’t understand why they don’t brew that more often or why they don’t put an “s” after Guy.
3.6 Bottle thanks to Styles. Pours reddish brown. Nose and taste of booze, dark fruits, molasses and brown sugar. Alcohol is really strong on the palate initially, but gives way to strong notes of raisin and prune in the finish.
3.5 This one was good for me, but in a strange way. I could not put my finger on any particular flavor, but they all went together ok. Again not off the charts but a solid offering. I would drink again, but I would not run out to buy.
3.3 Bottle from Silphium...thanks Brad! - Pours ruby amber, clear with an thin off-white head. Nose still with some a lot of heat, but I guess not bad for 15%. Raisins, a bit of caramel, candi sugar, but the smell is kind of vaguely sweet under the booziness. Taste is caramel and butterscotch, with some dark chocolate, booze, and bitter roast. Pretty watery, though slick and smooth. Expected way more out of this. Maybe I should have put it in the cellar longer.
4.0 Thanks to the Tampa crew for sharing this one. Pours dark amber with an off-white head. Nose is malt, booze, toffee, caramel, dates, plums, slight hops, and alcohol. Flavor is caramel, toffee, brown sugar, molasses, slight tart sweetness, and finishing sugary goodness. Medium bodied and enjoyable overall.
4.1 Bottle - thanks Cletus! Pours a pure amber with a short lived, thin beige head. Nose is rich with caramel, vinous bits, brown sugar, citrus, and some sherry. Drinks smoother than silk. Wonderfuly creamy, yet soft and buttery. Light florals, citrus, caramel, and that’s it. Not complicated, just sip it for an hour and relax. Delightful
3.8 Bottle. Pours a dark amber color with a small off-white head. Has a sweetish malty dark fruit aroma. Sweetish malty caramel and dark fruit flavor. Has a sweetish warming malty dark fruit and caramel finish with some weak hints of chocolate in the aftertaste.
4.1 Hazy brown with off white head. A wonderful sweet aroma with raisins, carmel, chocolate, and cherries. Perhaps one fo the more accurate descriptions I’ve seen in the descriptions - everything is there as described and well integrated. The body really is tastySweet with a faint hint of hops.
3.8 Dark clear ruby, bright and clear (sp?) aroma. Abrasively intense and assertively impressive. Extra sweet and concentrated, liquor notes, herbal with oak.
4.5 bottle courtesy of tyto, thanks! wow! this stuff is amazing. pours beautiful with a nice head. the aroma is nice and sweet, slightly hot. the taste is super nice, and the finish is just incredible. this stuff is so smooth i down half a bottle like an amber ale before i realized it was 15%! very well hidden alcohol, super smooth. tasty and dangerous stuff!
3.8 2008 Bottle I think - Pours a hazy ruddy amber with a small off white head...aroma is massive, caramel, toffee, plum, dark malt...very thick and almost chewy even in the aroma...flavour is to be expected, very sweet brown sugar, old fruit, vanilla, some light hops and burnt sugar bitterness...abv is well hidden considering its level, this is a big beer...
3.6 Bottle at post De Molen 30 bottle breakfast ... thanks to some one i traded with ... copper red ... sweet toffee male nose ... bright hop ... sweet and chewie ... very intense.
3.9 From notes. 2008 bottle. Amber. Off white carbonation. Rich toffee like malt, dense dark fruits, sugary sweetness, toast, alcohol warmth. Full body, smooth, viscous, rich. Awesome barley wine, need to get a couple to age.
3.9 9th Octoner 2008. GABF. Clar dark brown beer. Sweet caramelly toffee. Very subtle fruit. Smooth dry finish with a little spirit.
