Dark Horse Double Crooked Tree IPA

Dark Horse Double Crooked Tree IPA

Have you read the description for the regular Crooked Tree yet? Well this beer is almost the same just double. We actually took the Crooked Tree recipe and doubled all of the ingredients except the water, just the way a DOUBLE should be made. Big hops balanced with tons of malt give this beer a huge body. Although this beer is as cool as "the Fonz" when first purchased, it gets really mellow and smooth with some age. After a year or two stored in a cool dark place you’ll notice the heavy caramel and malt flavors are trying to sneak past the hops, they’re just not fast enough. This beer is hugely delicious so it will need your undivided attention (the chores can wait....trust us). 98 IBU’s

3.9 Poured in a snifter. Little head with thick lacing. Rich caramel color. Slightly malt aroma. Smooth up front taste with punch of hops to finish. Taste is more malt/biscuit than floral/citrus.
3.8 At Highland Stag. In a snifter. Pours reddish brown with no head. Immediate malty caramel creamy mouth feel. ---Rated via Beer Buddy
4.1 355 ml bottle, bottled 01/12/2016. 12% abv. Brown,hazy,off-white head. Nose- huge caramel and malts, citrus fruit marmalade, toffee, conifer forest and a hint of alcohol. Taste - bittersweet, caramel, marmalade.Nice bitterish aftertaste. Smooth, oily and slightly viscous.
3.7 12 ounce bottle. Pours a cloudy gold with a decent white head. Aroma of citrus, pine, and alcohol. Taste is grapefruit, pine, malt, and some alcohol. Nice.
3.6 12oz bottle to tulip. Pours clouded brown, sticky tan head. Aroma of caramel, bread, pine, fig, brown sugar. Taste of same with big booze across entire palate. Finish is bitter with some citrus juice. Malt-forward IPA for sure. That’s how you get booze though...at 13%.
4.1 Kolor bursztynowy. W aromacie słodko-chmielowo. Są nuty ciasteczkowe, kandyzowanych owoców i toffi z jednej strony, a ananas, zapachy igliwia i drzewa z drugiej. W smaku pełne, słodkawe. Goryczka wysoka ale dobrze zbalansowana. Wyraźny posmak chmielowy
3.5 Likierek chmielowy. W aromacie żywice i ciasteczkowo - karmelowy słód, do tego świeża nuta leśna, nieco ziołowości. W smaku podobnie, gęsto, leśnie, nieco żółtych owoców w tle, goryczka duża, ale krótka, szlachetna. Alko zdążyło się schować wystarczająco, delikatniutkie rozgrzewanie. Lubię takie!
3.9 Great double IPA. You can definitely sense the % alcohol (although the description said 13.5% and the bottle only says 12%), but it's a nice hoppy hit and still drinkable
3.5 Not sure about the age of this beer; overwhelming caramel on the nose makes me think it’s not the freshest bottle available. (Never sure about an IPA whose description tells you aging it makes it better.) Hops are almost an afterthought, with the massive malt front making up most of the beer. Mostly caramel, honey, sticky bun, maybe a little nutty undercurrent, with the hops relegated to a slight orange-tinted middle and a piney but manageable finish. IBUs add a nice postscript, but this beer is shockingly malt-centric, with a boozy fade that assures you you’re indeed drinking a 12% brew. More a strong ale than an IPA, but after a pint you won’t give a damn.
3.9 12 ounce bottle. Copper color topped by a frothy beige head that dissapates quickly. Big boozy malt nose. Bittersweet toasted malt flavor has a huge bitter hop component. Intense and personal. Lots of body, lots of malt, lots of hops. Excess at its finest.
5.0 a nice balanced beer, great fresh flavor. But at 12% alcohol may be my last for the day... well, perhaps until this evening. Nice Carmel notes and strong hops but not too citrusy. Highly recommended.
3.9 (Bottle) Cloudy copper-brown body with a medium beige-cream head. Aroma of malt and tropical fruit; grapefruit, papaya, pine, brown sugar. Medium body, creamy. Flavor is very sweet, malty with citrus and pine hop finish; lots of floral notes and fruit; alcohol is noticeable with warm finish.
3.8 Draft: pours clear dark amber with a thin white head, hoppy aroma and very hoppy favor, a touch sweet and a bit sticky, dry finish
3.8 Murky, hazed apple cider-like color with and off white head. Dulled hop and cardboard aroma. Sweet malty flavor, with nice balanced piney-earthy hop character. I can tell this beer was great but it has definitely aged which has effected it; would love to try it fresh. Notes: Bottle picked up on MA visit, Mar '17.
3.6 Bottle. No date. Pours amber, iridescent, big white head. Very fruity aroma. Lychee, sweet fruits, malts, grapes, berries, fresh plums and honey. At fist, briefly sweet, than dry and bitter. Well hidden alcohol. Thick, low carbonation. I think that unfortunately this bottle wasn’t fresh anymore.
3.7 C. Pours a clear amber color with white head. If you let it warm up a bit, it isn’t quite as harsh. Full flavored, but still harsh. Would probably really like the single
3.8 Pine wood and sweet fruit from the aroma and flavor. Pretty bitter, and pretty sweet. Says you can age it, but I wouldn’t. I’ll get a barleywine if that’s what I want. Good fresh, though.
3.8 aroma woody, citrus, resin, a bit like forest deep amber / cooper colour, top short, big bubbles, reduces fast. some lacing. taste quit sweet, heavy, feels woody, bitterness not high, but leaves long, good aftertaste. a bit to much carbonation, alcohol hidden, worms up. body high, but could expect more.
3.9 Reddish brown pour with a lasting foam. Lots of pine, resin, and tropical fruits. The flavor is almost sticky from the hops with a long dry finish.
3.5 Tap at BeerTemple, 16th February 17. Pours an orange brown no head really. Aroma is caramel, malt, sweet. Taste is boozy, sweet, malt, caramel, a bitterness kicks in, more booze and heat. Heavy going beast.
3.6 From tap at BeerTemple, Amsterdam. Aroma is malt, caramel, pine resin, orange, big hops, apricot, bit syrupy with some alcohol. Flavour is medium sweet with a long bittersweet finish. Body is above medium. Bit boozed up. Nice heavy slow sippin’ IIPA.
3.8 Light caramel coloured with a nice beige head. Aroma is toffee, candied citrus, hints of dark fruits and berries. Medium bodied, sticky mouthfeel, starts sweet on the palate but finishes with a bitter hoppy kick. Taste is toffee, candies citrus rind, hint of pine.
3.8 Backlog, ocena przepisana z untappd, w ramach uzupełniania profilu na ratebeer. Niesamowicie zdradliwe, wytrawne jak na tę moc IPA.
4.0 33cl. Bottle. Pours clear dark orange with tan head. Aroma caramel, toffee, citrus, pine, orange. Taste caramel sweet, nice piney bitter. Mouth-feel thick, oily. Great brew
2.7 Tap (Riga Craft Beer Festival 2016) Sweet sticky aroma, heavy sugary malts, some woody bitterness. Hot heady taste - booze and sugar. Herbal, spicy, perfumey. So perfumey, I’d say this could be something that tramps would drink. Nuts. Doesn’t work for me at all.

3.5 From tap at Fermentoren Aarhus as 12%. Pours a reddish, darkish amber with a small, off white head. Aroma has heavy caramel malts, old orange, old hops, very oldschool. Taste is very caramel sweet up front, actually quite nice, but gets replaced by a very high bitterness, that reminds you that this is not a barley wine, just an old IIPA, haha! Full bodied and with an average to low carbonation.
3.2 12 oz bottle. Bottle almost 2 months old and seems to have turned toward a little malty and less hops. Much like a young barleywine. It's nice but not as I had expected.
