Dark Horse Perkulator Coffee Dopplebock

Dark Horse Perkulator Coffee Dopplebock

This is a true dopplebock and Dark Horse Brewing’s only publicly distributed lager. It was so normal that we couldn’t stand it so we made it into a coffee dopplebock. Ha, take that Germany, with your Reinheitsgebot purity law! Anyway, we use fair trade organic coffee from our friends at The Ugly Mug Cafe in Ypsilanti, MI

We did a label contest and opened it up to the public for this beer. We had so many awesome entries that we couldn’t just pick one winner so we have 2 labels for this beer. We stagger the bottles in the six packs but with no order in mind.

3.9 12 oz bottle pours a hazy reddish brown under a huge creamy beige head that lasts and creates nice lacing. Aroma is coffee, bread, and caramel. Taste is not overly malty or yeasty, thanks to the coffee bitterness. There’s some spice and a bit of smoke in the finish. Body is medium, but with too much carbonation. This is a very satisfying, unusual doppelbock with memorable artwork on the label. I hope to find this one again.
4.4 Pour from a bottle is a nice clear amber red with a light cream head. Aroma is a nice coffee roast. Taste has a slight spice followed by a nice bitterness from the coffee. Has a dry finish.
4.2 From a bottle. Delicious, an almost smoky coffee flavor. Not over the top maltiness.
3.9 Dark brown, ruby in color, beige head. In aroma dark malt, coffee, caramell. In taste big beer, malty, bit of chocolate with a strong coffee flavour. The beer is full bodied, has medium bitter end to alance the sweetness. ’in overall very solid, good brew.
4.0 Bottle from Erzbierschof - Brown color with a beautiful creamy white head, fully lasting and beautiful lacing - Aroma is malty, coffee, caramel - Flavor is a string malt backbone with coffee - Medium body, light bitterness, sweet, fizzy carbonation, sweet coffee malt finish - really good and really well balanced but too fizzy
3.4 Bottle 330 ml at home, poured into a snifter. ABV 7%. One of the most metal labels I’ve seen. Deep red ruby to red brown colour on the body, clear, with a huge light beige head on top. Very thick, with great retention. Spots of lacong around the glass. Aroma of herbs, leaves, grounded used coffee, mould. Taste of leaves, cold coffee of low quality, moist grains. A lemon leaves-like light bitterness on the aftertaste. Medium body, soft carbonation, quite dry palate. Weird beer, still drinkable though.
3.0 definitely has the bang of cold coffee, could use some backbone and flavor otherwise though.
2.8 Bit of strange one. Definitely get some coffee but it’s a bit thin and just kind of odd.
3.5 this is one weird beer, it taste like coffee without any of the bitterness that goes with it because it is masked with the sweetness that would typically reside in a dopplebock
3.9 12 oz. gusher erupts a dark copper brown with a large foam. Aroma is quality coffee with light cocoa and toffee. Tastes of caramel, strong coffee, dark chocolate and some light dry grass. Medium body is smooth with a low level of carbonation and well balanced.
3.8 Bottle from Brusin’ Ales. Pours brown with 2 inches of khaki foam. Leaves a shitload of lacing. Smells like brewed coffee on the nose. Tastes a lot like coffee on the tongue. Finishes fairly clean. Better than I thought it would be.
3.0 12 oz bottle served in a lager glass. Pours clear copper-brown with a massive, foamy bone head. It took several pours and some patience to get the whole bottle into the glass. Unappealing odor, characterized by wet earth, used coffee grinds, and grains. This is followed by a nearly OK flavor. Feel: smooth medium body with a bubbly feel. O: likely a contaminated bottle; for such ever from Dark Horse.
3.6 Bottle. Huge creamy tan head. Hazy copper color. Lots of coffee and booze in the aroma and taste. Not bad but would not be my choice over a stout or porter for a coffee flavored beer.
4.0 Bottle. Appearance: Mildly hazy amber-copper body with a foamy light tan head. Aroma: Big coffee with a malty fruity backing with hints of bread and caramel. Taste: Prominent coffee with a mildly malty and fruity backing. Palate: Medium bodied, moderately carbonated. Overall: Very nice and enjoyable, I’d be thrilled if this were a coffee Troegenator though.
3.7 Draught @ BBF 2014. Reddish brown beer with a creamy, beige head. Aroma is suprisingly fresh with malts and coffee. Flavour is sweetish, malts, coffee and nicely warming alcohol in the end. Soft mouthfeel but not flat at all.
3.6 (Draught at Beer Temple, Amsterdam, 2 March 2014) Reddish brown colour with creamy, beige head. Malty, roasted nose with generous aromas of coffee, notes of roasted malt and dark bread. Mainly coffee though. Roasted, malty taste with freshly ground coffee, caramel, dried fruit and a balanced coffee bitterness. More than medium body, with a certain malt sweetness. Generous coffee character, but still well balanced. Nice one.
2.9 12oz bottle pours a cloudy reddish brown with a medium head. Big coffee aroma and flavor. Slightly watery with a metallic aftertaste. Ok, not bad.
3.7 Cap comes off with throaty top but no gushing. Has a huge head tho, on a deep amber body. Aroma is coffee and malts. Hints of caramel. Taste is malty with moderate to heavy notes of coffee. Well blended notes of light chocolate, toast and coffee. Lightly sweet finish. Medium body.
3.8 Pours a murky, mahogany color in body. Head is an inch and a beige/cream color. Lacing and head retention are wonderful. Smell is of roasted/burnt dark malts and coffee. Smoky wood or roasted chiles is also oddly detected. Sweet caramel candy/butterscotch balance the bitter coffee. Alcohol is hidden nicely. Initially tastes more like a standard bock rather than doppelbock. Lighter in sweetness and alcohol strength. Strong, sweet fruit/prune flavors are replaced by lighter malts and a serious bitter coffee kick. Smoky/burnt mesquite wood or fire roasted chiles leave a strange aftertaste. At 7% alcohol, it is incredibly smooth. Mouthfeel is on the lighter side with lots of carbonation. Head added some texture to the beer. Overall, I think this was a refreshing take on an old style of beer. Wouldn’t say this was the best doppelbock out there but I am slightly biased towards coffee beers. Drinks easily for 7% abv, not available locally but hoping to revisit this one in the future
3.0 Poured from bottle. Color is almost of maple syrup. Aroma is not very potent. Coffee is light in taste.
Weiches malziges Finish. 10/11/11/11/8/11
3.0 Medium brown color. Very carbonated pour. Very odd aroma. Reminds me of a hot sauce smell. Tastes fine. A little coffee flavor comes through over the caramel taste if the body. This beer is just ok.
4.8 Barwa: miedziana, klarowna. Piana biała, obfita, drobno pęcherzykowa, utrzymująca się. Wysycenie wysokie. Aromat: słodowość, karmel i dominująca nad nimi kawa. Rewelacja. Smak: karmelowa słodycz i wytrawna kawowa kontra. Świetne. Jeden z najlepszych, a z pewnością najciekwaszy koźlak, jakiego próbowałem. Tylko amerykanie mogli wymyslić takie połączenie. Pycha.
3.3 More coffee than beer...it's good. Slight chocolate melt aftertaste. String coffee front with a light carbonation and heavy head. Love it.
3.7 Keg at Craft Clerko, 14/03/14. Chestnut brown with a good sized tan head that retains well. Nose carries good roast coffee notes, spice, dark malts, nutmeg, fruitloaf. Taste comprises light cocoa, toned down coffee compared to the nasal assault but still well evident, pepper, spice, candied fruit rinds. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, sweetish licks in the close. Solid stuff, delivers the coffee as promised!
3.3 355ml bottle (BierKompass.de) at 7.0% (6+:4:6:4:13=3.3+) Nice reddy brown, large spongy head. Nice stale coffee grounds in the aroma, little more than that though. Simple palate, smoothish, with and rounded full roast, but crispish carbonation. Taste stale coffee grounds. Finish too. OK-ish, but a bit "why bother?". Alcohol completely totally hidden, respect for that. Kinda OK winter-time drink. But I’m left uninspired. Give me beer in my beer mug, and coffee in my coffee mug, thank you.
3.3 Pours a mahogany color with a light tan head. Aroma is sweet with caramel and toasted malts and plenty of coffee. Flavor is of the chocolate, toasted, and caramel malts up front. The coffee flavor hits after that pretty strongly. Slightly bitter finish as well.
4.0 This beer suits its name, the coffee is dominant and quite delicious. Body is the roasted malt of a doppelbock. Great beer.
Meget stoflig i munden.
