Dark Horse Sapient Trip Ale

Dark Horse Sapient Trip Ale

Why is the Grim Reaper holding a mailbox? Well, that mailbox is from a dead Dark Horse beer. The Grim Reaper better know as "Death" was quite fond of our classic Sapient Summer Wheat Ale. When we changed it into a Belgian Style Triple, Death thought it would only be appropriate to bring something from that beer into this beer. So he picked the mailbox, and we weren’t about to argue with him. You can say what you want about him, but that Death sure has a big heart.
So anyway...we brewed this beer with a Trappist yeast strain so it is very traditional. The flavors are incredibly complex with notes of mild fruit and finishes with a bit of clove. Although this beer is higher in alcohol it is very smooth and finishes dry on the palate.

4.1 B-. Pours a hazy golden color with white head. Strong flavor with a dry finish
3.1 330ml bottle. Thanks Martin. Pours hazy dark yellow colour. Thin white head. Sweet, caramelly, honey-like aroma. Grainy beginning. Hints of honey in the middle. Raisins. Sweet, slightly grainy, mead like finish. Honey and raisins in the aftertaste. Bit watery body. Rather medium bodied, not very good example of a triple. Bit out of balance.
4.0 Yeasty. spicy aroma, flavor is fruit and yeast, sweet and spicy, rather complex but this is a fine brew, quite strong, but full bodied and flavorful enough to disguise its kick. It’s a delightful, cloudy orange brew with a minimal head and no lacing at all. I would advise this brewery to rethink the graphic design of their bottle... death and the mailbox in muddy reds, oranges and greens announces something much more drab and lifeless than this superior brew. Another note: I drank this with a very spicy meal which featured a habanero pepper chopped into the mix, and it stood up bravely, and in the end won the day!
3.4 Bottle at home, birthday gift from Lauren. The aroma is pear, banana, spice, raw sweet dough. Yeasty esters produce good clove and white pepper flavors. Bitter finish. Nice triple .
4.1 0.355l bottle. Hazy orange body with a white head. Aroma of bread, toffee, rhubarb and orange peel. Taste of bread, caramel, dark sugar and some tangerine. Very nice.
3.4 Bottle, 355 ml from Beergium, shared with Max and JFK10000. Pours golden, medium white head. Caramel, some fruity notes, spicy, some yeast. Sweet. Medium bodied.
3.4 Bottle from Beergium. Hazy light brown color, white head. Bitter taste with citrus, yeast, ripe fruits, grass, toast, hops and earthy notes. Bitter finish with citrus, ripe fruits, hops, toast, yeast and grass. Solid tripel.
3.3 Bottle. Appearance - golden with a decent head. Oily looking texture. Nose - some dried orange and lemon notes but dominated by honey. Taste - loads more honey with some well hidden fruit notes. Palate - medium bodied with a sweet middle section that continues through the finish. Overall - too sweet. It lacks the kind of tang you get in Karmeliet or Westmalle.
3.5 From bottle. Pours clear pale amber. Nose of resin, toffee, oranges, peaches, esters. Taste is sweet, treacle, candied fruit.
3.7 Kolor brudno pomarańczowy, blotny. Obwódka piany. Zapach mocno słodowy, chleb, nektar, lekko żywica i cytrusy. W smaku dobry balans ciastowo-karmelowej słodyczy i pomarańczowo-porzeczkowo-winnej kwaśności. Alkohol jest dobrze ukryty. Piwo jest pełne, ale smak nie utrzymuje się dlugo i nie pozostawia posmaku.
3.9 On tap at Stokes grill. What a great example. I hope the Belgians are happy with us. Licorice notes . Light dull.golden color. No head but really drinkable
3.9 Bottle (from beergium). Pours golden with whiteish head. The head stays for a moment. Aroma is sweet, fresh fruits, apples, candy. Flavor is sweet and bitter, fresh fruits, candy, malt. Finish is mild dry bitter with some alcohol and lingering sweetness. Drinkability is very good, despite the abv. Overall: very good, not that complex, but well made and sweet + boozy (just as I like it).
3.5 Aroma - toffee, cherry, vanilla, fig, and some oak. Appearance - body has a hazy amber color. The head is white and about a 1/4" and settles into a layer of foam. Fine nucleation rips at the side of the glass. Taste - has a rich nutty-like nature, there is some toffee, and cherry skins. All this is situated above some Belgian yeast. There is a very mild vanilla and oak quality. There is also the classic splash of clove, coriander, and nutmeg. Palate - body is medium, the texture sticky, carbonation is average, and the finish has a slight astringency.
4.1 12 oz bottle. Aroma is clovey. Appearance is dark amber with slight cream head with some carbonation. Taste is banana and cloves. This is one of my favorite tripels.
4.0 Big clove and barnyard funk, bubblegum too. Taste is clove, banana, bubblegum, sourdough, phenolic esters, clementines, and black pepper.
4.0 At Trolley Stop tavern. In a tulip glass. Thick golden creamy. With a citrus coriander tang upfront that fades slowly. ---Rated via Beer Buddy
3.0 From bottle. Pours clear honey color with little or no head. Aroma is big on bananas and Belgian yeasts. Taste has a mild sweetness, but the bitterness is forward and lingers. Medium mouthfeel. Alcohol well-hidden.
3.3 Golden-orange, very clear, minimal white head. Coriander, banana, some light hay. Medium bittered, decent amount of sweetness. Slightly oily. Medium body, decent amount of carbonation and acidity.
3.4 Aromas of banana, green apple, cereal, and floral hops. Hazy orange with a fully lasting white head. Somewhat sweet, fruity, floral, lightly spicy. Medium-full bodied.
3.4 Trübes Bernstein mit kleiner Schaumkrone. Malzig, Karamell, süß, fruchtig, Zitrus, Orange, süffig.
3.7 Tap @ basement beer bar. Aroma of sweer spices, some pine hops. Clear golden amber with white head, not lasting. Taste is light+ sweetness, moderate- bitterness. Medium body, oily texture, avg. carb., bitter spicy finish.
3.3 Interessant gemacht mit all seiner Fluffigkeit, der ganzen Hefe und dem belgischen Hopfen, der zu einer ordentlichen Perlung führt. Schwer, vollmundig und süffig. Keine schlechte Sache.
3.2 Bottle from Rudat in Dortmund. The beer has got a hazy amber colour with a smooth body and low head. Aroma of Belgian yeast, flowers and fruits. Taste of hops, Belgian yeast, wheat, caramel, bread and blossoms. Sweet-yeasty finish.
3.6 Tap @ Beer Temple, shared with Caesar, Benzai & Mr. Hangover. Golden color. White head. Aroma’s: sweet fruit, with caramel, malts retronasal (more triple-like). Flavor is light sweet, malty, light bitter. Medium bodied. Finishes moderate bitter. Decent triple, certainly by American standards.
3.0 Draft @ Beer Temple. Pours a clear golden beer with a big white head on top. Aroma is mostly fruity yeast, slightly oak and herbal. A bit strange and flavor is sweet and yeasty with bready notes. Just another mediocre tripel in my book, yeasty and sweet with an alcoholic touch in the end. Meh.
3.0 Draught @ Beer Temple. Clear orange golden color, medium sized white head. Smell and taste malts, yeast, lightly bitter, the slightest hint of herbs or spices. Average body and carbonation. Meh.
3.1 12 fl.oz bottle. Pours slightly orange golden colour with a mid-sized off-white head. Aroma of strong, pale malt, dry fruits, grain and citrus. Taste of strong malt, pale fruits, hints of honey and spices, nothing special.
2.8 12 oz bottle shared with ebone1988. The pour is a ruby gold, crystal clear with a collar of white head. No lace. The aroma is strong trippel. Lots of malt and Belgian yeast. It's not good. I hate trippels. Funky and Belgian. Ugh. The flavor is awful. Belgian trippel syrup. Malts and yeast dominate. Lots of clove and gross. The mouth feel is thinner and syrupy but with a no carbonation and a lingeringly clove-filled finish. This is just not good. I dislike all of the trippels
1.8 Bottle shared with koleminer20. Not happy about it. Aroma is metallic, clove, banana, onion, dying. Appearance is dark straw, white head. Taste is banana, clove, sugar, a mess. Mouthfeel is abrasive, harsh carbonation and not good. Overall, not a fan of the style and this is a bad version of it.
3.7 Wrote down a score ages ago but ni5 any tasting notes. Recording for posterity. Good stuff.
