3.6 Draught at Mikkeller SF. Amber color, white head. Sour taste with citrus, sea salt, lemon peel, wheat, mango and grass. Sour finish with citrus, lemon peel, mango, wheat, acidic notes and peach. Excellent Berliner weisse, the best beer I've tasted at this ABV (2.3%)
3.3 Keg @ De Garde. Slightly hazy gold pour with a small head. Nose is really oaky. Loads of wood, cheese rind. Some piss and Wheaty funk. Drinks surprisingly sharp. More oak. Moderately acetic. Some white grape. Light body, fine carb. Not what I was expecting considering its style and description, but solid enough.
3.9 Tap. The Pilcrow, Manchester. Hazy, dark yellow. No head. Nose has stone fruit. Damp grain. Some brett like, soapy funk. Hint of citrus, particularly lemon, zest. Taste is mostly dry with light, crisp tartness. Touch of sweetness on the lips. Light and clean mouthfeel. Tart and zingy finish.
3.7 (Draught at brewery, clearish gold, fine lasting offwhite bubbles. Nose of manure, horsey, very much a sense of the land around this place, Young lambic. Taste is tart lemon juice, elements of gueuze, somewhat funky, cobwebs, brett, complex for a 2% abv beer.
3.4 Trocken säuerlicher Beginn, spritzig herb. Milde Würzigkeit, spritzig, steigende Säure. Weiche geringe Bitterkeit, vollmundig, trocken heuartiger Nachhall. 8/11/11/11//11
3.5 Sampled from tap at ’Craft Beer Corner’. Slightly hazy, straw yellow with a white head. Sourish, moderately fruity and slightly funky aroma of lemon, rhubarb, straw and some manure. Quite sour, moderately fruity and quite funky taste of lemon, rhubarb, gooseberry, straw, manure and some vinegar, followed by a medium long, rather tart, woody-dry finish. Thin to medium body, quite astringent and a bit effervescent mouthfeel, soft carbonation. Very refreshing, just a bit too sour to be really sessionable.
3.7 Sample at Monk’s Kettle. Hazy pale yellow-gold color with a medium white head that diminishes steadily to a film. Stringy lacing. Tart citrus, yeast and malt in the nose. Light-bodied with a tart citrusy character and notes of floral yeast and doughy malt. The finish is herbal yeast and tart lemons. Above average overall.
3.7 Poured from a 750 ml bottle. Aroma is moderately acidic with some light lemon and pineapple notes. Light grain notes with faint oak. Pours a fairly clear, pale, yellow straw color with a medium large, moderately thick, white head that recedes quickly and disappears. No lacing or legs. Flavor is moderately acidic with a light sharpness. Some light grain notes and a light sweetness. Moderate lemon and citrus notes with some lighter pineapple notes. Hints of yogurt and oak. Mouthfeel is light bodied with medium high carbonation. Low astringency and low alcohol warmth. Overall, a nice beer. A simple Berliner, but clean and tasty. Acidity is a touch sharp, but not bad.
3.4 Draught. Pours a hazy light brown color with little head. Very sour, which I like, and stays on the palate for a bit.
3.9 Draft pour at the Shelton Brothers Festival. I’ve had a bunch of others in the Bu series, but not the main Bu, so it was about time. Pours a cloudy gold with a massive white head. Notes of lemon, lime, sourdough, wheat, yogurt, herbs, lighter grapefruit, dusty grains - nice. Light-bodied, with moderate to medium carbonation and a dry, tart mouthfeel. Pretty great at 2.1%. Good base to build upon.
4.2 Draft on tap at ISOBeers (San Jose, CA). Pours a hazy dulled golden hue, darker middle shows a more muddled glow throughout. Frothy whitish head atop is creamy, a nice ringer laces sufficiently. Aromas are tart, punchy, sweet tarts and pithy lime meet bitter rind, orangw, lemon. Flaked wheat, bready malts, more limey appeal. Yogurt, grapefruit, really nice fresh punchy stuff. Initial is nice and tart, lots of lime essence, green, a bit if key lime, lemon, decent acidic poke. Cleaner dry bready malts, straw, dryness. Grapefruit, yogurt, more lime. Fresh, punchy, citric with a decent tangy edge. Kiss of yogurt, good flavors, crushable stuff really. Fuzzy almost effervescent backend catches nicely. Really nice stuff without lending a dominant flavor or acidic appeal. Light, fresh, limey with lemonade tang, tempered fruit sweetness sitting behind. Makes sense why this works so well as a base. World class Berliner. Fuzzy, quenching, sour slammer with some complexity.
4.2 Tap at Shelton Brothers. Hazy straw color with a finger of white foam. Lots of lemon zest and funk on the nose. Clean and crisp on the palate, but definitely some wheat like creaminess. Carbonation is poppin’. Lemony zing on the finish. Lovely.
3.4 On tap at Toronado. Orange, but Earthy and salty. A little of the classic "pizza and orange juice" character. Thankfully not too much. These Berliner Weisse brews just aren’t my thing.
