3.1How: Bottle, as Big Brown Bastard.
Where: SMÖF 2014.
Appearance: Brown colour with a beige head.
Aroma: Fruit, malt, some spices.
Body: Medium body and carbonation.
Flavour: Malt, spices, yeast, hops.
2.9Donker bruin bier zonder schuim. Smaak is zoet en licht bitter hoppig, anijs en drop. Enigszins waterig en blijft niet lang hangen.
3.5Bottle @ home. Ramata carica velata. Schiuma beige fine, abbastanza persistente. Aroma piuttosto intenso, fruttato / frutti rossi (more) , caramello, liquirizia e tostatura, lievito belga. Poco carbonata.
3.7Gents Bierfestival Nr 5
Pours dark , clear brown . Almost no , white head .
Smell is sweet, bit dark malts .
Taste is sweet , chocolate , roasted malts , sweet yet balanced . Earthy , fairly complex . light body . Nice
3.1Bottle from Dranken Geers. Fruity smell with dried fruit, vanilla and a hint of tobbaco. Similar taste, the dried fruit is dominant. Slightly harsh mouthfeel. The flavours are a bit too torn and all over the place.
3.2Stereotypical dubbel, cloudy brown, caramel malts, sweetish, dark fruits, yeasty with cliché grassy hops in the finish. Nothing special but nonetheless enjoyable enough.
3.3Bottle from Det Bette Ølhus. Hazy brown with an off-white head. Aroma is sweet, malty, caramel and yeasty. Flavor is quite sweet and light bitter. Sweet finish. Soft. 020714
Obefintlig beska.
3.5Stubby bottle, 330 ml, poured into a tulip glass at home. ABV 6.5%
Amber coloured with almost two fingers of light beige head, with okay retention, leaving minimal lacing on the glass.
Aroma of fruits, plums, sweet in general, some grains too.
Nice taste, again quite fruity, plums, slighty grainy, bubblegum on the finish, light yeast.
Medium body, good carbonation. Slighty sticky on the palate.
Maybe it’s a long time since I had a dubbel but I really liked this one.
3.3Stor Big Brown Bastard-flaska från SB. Gyllenbrun, lågt beigevitt skum.
Söt smakbild med mörkt socker, torkad frukt, honung, russin. känns aningen ihålig bortom sötman, i princip ingen beska, lite belgiska fenoler, mjuk munkänsla.
3.1Bottle @home. Pours dark brown with an off-white head. Aroma is sweet, dried fruit, hints of caramel, herbal. Taste is sweet, alcoholic, bit caramel, dried fruit.
3.6Bottle at Hanzie.
Sweet nose, spicy notes.
Hazy walnut color, white head.
Medim body, sweet, sugar, nobel hops, spicy notes.
:)
Bolton Brew.
3.4Quite a sweet, fruity aroma with some raisin. Sweet taste with dark malts. dried fruit and a touch of caramel.
3.4Bottle 330ml @ home
Pours hazy dark brown with a off-white head. Aroma has notes of malt, caramel, licorice and dried fruits. Taste is medium sweet and light bitter with a long caramel and fruity finish. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft.
4.6Bottle.Ruddy brown with a small head, aroma of malt and spice, taste is herbal with plenty of light fruits and chocolate, lovely
3.1750 ml bottle as "De Graal Big Brown Bastard", thanks to Reza! (Not on ratebeer, but well known in the beer circle in Gothenburg).
Hazy brown color, small tan head. Light phenolic, fruity, grainy scent. Sweet, soem liqourice, sugary, berry taste. Medium to full mouthfeel, very low bitterness. Sweet, light phenolic aftertaste.
A bit too sweet, wouldn’t want to drink a full bottle of this, not even a 33 cl by myself. Fairly nice in smaller volumes though.
3.1Bottle. Pours clear-ish red with LOTS of carbonation. Aroma of malt, caramel and spices. Taste of malt, caramel, sugar, nuts, spices and a bit of fruits. Sweet with a medium bodied. The aftertaste is malty and a bit bitter, but not much. Good dubbel, but nothing super special.
3.8Tasty Belgian dubbel. Filled with herbs and spices of course and with that nice dry and bitter taste that De Graal often has.
3.3750 at Buffalo Beer Geek Fest. medium brown pour, maltiness richness, chestnuts, toffe and caramel notes. OK
3.1Grifo. Copa Globo.
On-tap- Snifter glass. Dark brown color headed by beige froth. Brief crown. Belgian yeast, plum, toasted malt & intense floral aromas. Enters fizzy with toasted flavor. Full body. Moderate carbonation. Caramel malt & candy flavors create sugary sensation & quite cloying mouthfeel. Long sweet/bitter finish. Fruits & figs on the aftertaste.
3.133cl bottle at home. Hazy light brown coloured beer with small white head and lots of carbonation. Malty fruited aroma. Full sparkling palate. Finish is sweet bitter dry.
3.933 cl. bottle sampled @ Bier Central. Reddish murky wood-ish, not a big fan of the colour with a slight beige head. Taste is of sweet malts, concentrated brown sugar, raisins, caramel, herbs, touch toast until overtaken completely in thick slightly marinated in aalchol dried dark fruits mixed with a good chunk of wild berries. Med. slightly messy body, not bad.
3.7Bottle: Served in an Ikea (?) taster:
Medium to smaller sized beige vast and thicker yet somewhat lively foamy head on top of a cloudy red ruby colored beer with an amber tint to it.
Aromas of toasted malts, perfume, flowers, blossom, marzepin, marsh mellows, sweet/liquorice wood, tea herbs, fruit like orange, raisin/prunes, berries and tangerine. Overall a sweet somewhat complex aroma. Very nice.
Flavours of toast, barley malts, caramel, sweet apricot, prunes, raisin, figs, autumnal herbs and leaves, marzepin, bitter, hay and hebal toast, light yeasty, light chocolate and some sweet/liquorice wood tones.
Aftertaste is bitter, toast, marzepin, caramel, barley malts and wood.
Low to medium carbo, soft mouthfeel, medium body and a creamy texture.
The Graal for some reason never interested me to buy their beer, but for after tasting their ginger beer, I was pretty much blown away by the immense subtility that beer had. And now it looks like I experience it again with this beer. Very nice and even a bit complex.
3.8This sweet Flanders Dubbel has a reddish appearance and a spice filled aroma. A flavorful abundance of caramel, raison and chocolate comes on the tongue and a slight lingering palate balances this well with breads and cheeses. Another fine Belgian beer to be remembered!
2.7aroma: caramel,
apparenza: brown, hazy, minimal head,
gusto: medium sweetness, lightly bitter,
palato: light body, oily feel, lively, abrupt
2.8Bottle from beer planet. BBF 06/2011 (bought 09/2012 so a little dated this one)
cloudy unclear brown, smooth small light brown head.dried fruty, yeasty, cellary aroma. sweet malty notes.
Flavor is slightly oxidized, cellary, dried fruits, sweetness, yeast, sweetish and easy drinking dubbel with a little bit of spices in it. complex enough to be interesting, but doesn’t age that well. (this one didn’t).
3.0Hazy amber brown colour. Sweet toasty malty caramel yeasty aroma. Thin like mouthfeel. Toasty malt and caramel in the flavour, sweet like. Thanks for sharing this one Cecil.
3.3Bottle @ home.... It pours clear amber like with a small tan head..... the aroma is herbal, fresh and caramel.. the flavor is caramel, sweet and toasted malt.... very sweet.....
3.2Deep red-brown, unclear after adding the "fond", beige head; not that much foam.
Nose is pretty strong with spices (like gingerbread), sugar, a whiff of alcohol. Almost smells like a port; has the nose of a stronger beer, also a bit fruity as in red fruits, e.g. raspberries.
Taste: little carbonation, a bit of roasted character, sugars without ever being cloyingly sweet, caramel, spices. Feels a bit too light or weak in the taste, but then again this is only 6.5%. Still, it doesn’t live up to the expectations set by the nose.
Aftertaste: smooth, slightly roasted, no sweetness but not a lot of bitterness either, again quite (or slightly too) soft.
Nice taste though it lacks a bit of body to stand out from the crowd.
